Jerry DiPoto, Kim Ng, Front-Runners for Seattle Mariners' GM Position

According to Buster Olney, Arizona Diamondbacks executive Jerry DiPoto is one of the front-runners for the Mariners GM job.
DiPoto has built a reputation as a great scout, having served for the Red Sox during their first World Series in 2004. He also worked for the Rockies and played a key role in drafting some of the players that helped in their 2007 run to the World Series.
He is currently with the Diamondbacks, where we have seen several strong trades as well as several smart draft choices (Upton, Scherzer, Parker). He would make for a great pick, and Olney believes the Mariners would have an easy time recruiting Pat Gillick if DiPoto is picked.
Kim Ng, the Dodgers Front Office assistant, is also one of the candidates in line for the job. She has built up quite a good resume working for the Dodgers and likely has a GM job in her future. She doesn't nearly have as much experience as DiPoto, but the Mariners are looking for more of an up-and-comer than an established executive. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Seattle Mariners, Kim Ng, Arizona Diamondbacks, Buster Olney, Colorado Rockies

The Twins Winter Target Should Be Adrian Beltre

This name probably doesn't jump out as a big surprise. Beltre's name has been linked to the Twins for the last few months, and I've been calling for the Twins to trade for him almost a year now . Beltre is coming up on the last year of his 5-year, $67 million deal that he signed prior to the 2005 season. The last time Beltre played in a contract year, he hit 25 more homeruns than his previous season and drove in 41 more runs. He also increased his OPS by .303 points, all while finishing second in the MVP voting for that season. The Seattle Mariners currently are one of the worst teams in the majors, but still sport a payroll well over $100,000,000. The team is getting old fast and needs to cut both salary and age to try and rebuild. The team has a few players that they are looking to unload in the right deals, and Beltre is one of them. Since he is unlikely to re-sign after the season, the Mariners will look at trading him during the offseason to try and get some sort of compensation that ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Minnesota Twins, Adrian Beltre, Seattle Mariners

Joe Torre Is Lou Pinella's Daddy

If the Yankees are Pedro's "daddy", then Joe Torre can be called Lou Pinella's "padre." That's Italian and Espanol by the way. The fear of many Cubs fans I spoke to entering this series, wasn't fear of the Dodgers' hitting or their young pitching, but the match-up in the dugout.
The match-up where Joe Torre has beaten Lou Pinella handily. Many fans don't even look at trends such as how the managers does against the other lifetime. They just look at the lineup, pitching, and blurt out "We're better."
Not so fast. Lou is a certified Hall of Famer. He was a solid ballplayer, managed the Reds to an unpredictable World Series title, and had successful regular seasons' in Seattle and Chicago. Notice I said "regular season." Ever since the 1990 upset win over the Oakland Athletics, Lou hasn't been able to get his team over the hump. He just hasn't. He's been a great manager in between his arrival in Seattle and his new job in Chicago. He's led them to seven playoff appearances. The Mariners have only ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Lou Piniella, Joe Torre, Chicago Cubs, Seattle Mariners
