Mariners, Tigers reportedly discussing deal

                    Sporting News staff reports

Amid rumors that the Tigers and Mariners are talking trade, The Detroit News opined the teams are a good fit.
The Mariners want a left fielder and a starting pitcher, and the Tigers can offer center fielder Curtis Granderson and righthander Edwin Jackson. In return, the Mariners could build a package around righthander Brandon Morrow and a couple of highly regarded prospects -- perhaps shortstop Carlos Triunfel and third baseman/shortstop Matt Tuiasosopo.
This past season, the Tigers acquired lefthander Jarrod Washburn from the Mariners, so the two general managers have some recent history.
Granderson and Jackson are expected to draw interest from many teams, if the Tigers indeed decide to make them available in trade talks.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Detroit Tigers, Seattle Mariners, Curtis Granderson, Edwin Jackson, Brandon Morrow

Chicago gets 24-year-old left-hander Scott Maine and 23-year-old infielder Ryne White.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, Aaron Heilman, Arizona Diamondbacks, New York Mets, Seattle Mariners

Looks like three surgeries is all Rob Johnson is going to need this off-season. Johnson met earlier today with team medical director Edward Khalfayan and they both went over an MRI taken previously on Johnson's elbow. It was determined that while there is some inflamation and a small bone spur in the elbow, it's nothing that will require an operation.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NFL, Rob Johnson, Seattle Mariners

Former Spokane Indian Zack Greinke Wins AL Cy Young For 2009

Starting pitcher Zack Greinke of the Kansas City Royals has won the American League Cy Young Award, defeating Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners and Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers.
Greinke pitched for the Spokane Indians in 2002 for his first season.
Greinke compiled a record of 16-8, an ERA of 2.16 and a WHIP of 1.073, as opposed the record of Hernandez at 19-5, an ERA of 2.49 and a WHIP of 1.135.
For those who don't know, WHIP is Walks plus Hits in Innings Pitched, which is similar to the ERA but is a more individually based statistic, while the ERA is a mix of individual performance and the performance of the defense.
The edge that Greinke appears to have had is the streak of five shutouts to open the season for the Royals.
I had favored Hernandez because I thought he had been more consistent over the course of the season, and used the compilation of more wins and fewer losses as the tie-breaker, because both the Royals and Mariners gave little run support to either pitcher, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Zack Greinke, Kansas City Royals, Cy Young, Seattle Mariners, Felix Hernandez, Spokane Indians

Several clubs expressing interest in John Smoltz

                    Sporting News staff reports

John Smoltz apparently won't lack for options this offseason.
FoxSports.com reports the 42-year-old right-hander has drawn interest from at least seven clubs, including the St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets and Seattle Mariners. Other potential suitors include the Houston Astros, Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles.

Smoltz finished this past season with the Cardinals, going 1-3 with a 4.26 ERA as the club's fifth starter. He began the year with the Boston Red Sox but was released after posting an 8.32 ERA in eight starts.

Fox speculates that Smoltz would prefer to remain in the National League, where has played all but four months of his 22-year major league career. The site also reports that Smoltz is open to being a starter or a reliever and says that "some teams have inquired about him as a closer."

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, John Smoltz, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, Seattle Mariners, Houston Astros

Just got done speaking to Nationals GM Mike Rizzo and meeting the majority of his new front-office hires -- the amassing of which Rizzo called "the most important part of our offseason." Suffice it to say there is a lot of optimism around the organization these days. The bulk of the new guys had been to Arizona this fall to see the team's prospects in the Arizona Fall League. (Jay Robertson, the newly hired special assistant to Rizzo, said this about Stephen Strasburg: "I told a scout from another organization, 'He's two grades better than anyone you've ever seen.'") Here is a short-and-sweet summary of some news that came out of this afternoon: *The Nationals have hired former Seattle Mariners manager John McLaren as Jim Riggleman's bench coach. (This was told to me by a source outside the organization and confirmed by a source within the organization.) This will be

Seattle Mariners Need To Pull The Trigger On Trading For Edwin Jackson

As I am sure you all know, news broke recently about the Seattle Mariners potentially looking into trading for Edwin Jackson, most likely trading Brandon Morrow in the process. This is the first rumor of the off-season I want to see become a reality. The most obvious reason for this is the fact that Seattle needs a solid starter behind Felix Hernandez. If they trade Morrow and get Jackson, it would really bolster the rotation.
The Mariners explored the option of picking up Jackson when he was still in Tampa Bay. Now could be the best time to pick him up.
It would take more than Morrow to snag Edwin Jackson, though. A small package of pitchers could be assembled to meet Detroit's needs. After all, the Mariners have a lot of potential starters and relievers. Maybe Morrow, Shawn Kelley, and Jason Vargas. Detroit may even want Luke French back.
All four of them can play at the major league level, and all four wouldn't cost more than the ML minimum since that is what they are looking for. The final ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Seattle Mariners, Edwin Jackson, Brandon Morrow, Shawn Kelley

Mariners talk to Tigers about Jackson, may be looking at Granderson

                    Sporting News staff reports

The Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners have discussed a possible trade involving right-hander Edwin Jackson, but the talks aren't that serious, FOXSports.com reports.

The Web site reports the Tigers are looking to get back pitchers who will make the major league minimum next season. FOX reports right-handers Brandon Morrow and Shawn Kelley fit that description and would be good fits for the Tigers.

Jackson was the focus of much speculation at last week's general managers' meetings, as rumors circulated that the Tigers would need to trade players to hold the line on their payroll. Jackson is due to receive a raise from his $2.2 million 2009 salary. He made the AL All-Star team this year and finished 13-9 with a 3.62 ERA.

FOX reports the Mariners tried to acquire Jackson last offseason in a three-team deal that would have sent J.J. Putz to Detroit.

The site also reports that the M's have some ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Detroit Tigers, Seattle Mariners, Curtis Granderson, Edwin Jackson, Brandon Morrow

                    Sporting News staff reports

Teams already are lining up to talk with the agent of Angels righthander John Lackey, according to MLB.com.
Lackey, 31, already has been identified as the top pitcher in this year's free-agent market and interest seems to be getting hotter leading up to Friday—the day the Angels lose exclusive negotiating rights and the dollar figures really start to grow.
According to MLB.com, the Red Sox, Mets and Brewers already have had preliminary discussions with agent Steve Hilliard, and the Yankees almost assuredly will join the discussion at some point. Sources in Seattle have identified the Mariners as an interested party as well.
The Mets and Red Sox are said to be compiling "due diligence" reports on Lackey's health after consecutive seasons in which he made only 24 and 27 starts. He was sidelined in both seasons by various arm injuries.

                    Sporting News staff reports

Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu told The Seattle Times that initial reports about bullpen coach John Wetteland being hospitalized Thursday for suicide concerns and mental health issues were highly premature.
"A lot of things got blown out of proportion," Wakamatsu told the newspaper. "He had a domestic dispute—an argument. His blood pressure raced, and obviously his wife called the police. The next thing you know, it's about suicide. It had nothing to do with that."
Wakamatsu added Wetteland is doing great and is back at home.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Seattle Mariners, Don Wakamatsu, John Wetteland

Jack Wilson Staying in Seattle, Branyan Next?

According to mlbtraderumors.com , the Seattle Mariners signed SS Jack Wilson to a two-year, $10 million contract. Wilson is known as best defensive shortstop in the MLB as he posted best UZR among all shortstops, but his 2010 option was bit expensive($8.4 million) so the Mariners were trying to rework his contract.
This deal gives the Mariners a decent everyday shortstop as they played Yuniesky Betancourt on the opening day last year. The Mariners' already impressive defence looks even better with this move.
Wilson is back, now the Mariners will try to bring back Russell Branyan . He recently rejected the Mariners one-year offer, as Branyan is looking for multi-year deal. Branyan was lone Mariner to hit 30+ homer last season, but he missed all September and October because of herniated back. He will turn 34 this December so offering him a multi-year deal might be a bit risky. Let's see how Zduriencik works this out as the Mariners need him.
