Manny Ramirez is coming back to the Dodgers next season.

The team said Friday that the slugger exercised his $20 million contract option for 2010. His agent Scott Boras informed Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti of the decision.

Ramirez hit .290 with 19 home runs and 63 RBIs in 104 regular season games. He missed 50 games while suspended for violating baseball's drug policy.

In the NL division series against St. Louis, Ramirez batted .308 with no homers and two RBI.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Los Angeles Dodgers, Manny Ramirez, Scott Boras, Ned Colletti, St. Louis Cardinals

Matt Holliday expected to reach the open market

                    Sporting News staff reports

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak and agent Scott Boras both expect outfielder Matt Holliday to reach the open market, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
"We need to spend some time with Matt and his agent and share what our vision is, what we have to offer, and at some point I'm sure we will," Mozeliak told the newspaper. "But at the same time, that's part of why we traded for him, to get him here, and at some point you'd think he has a pretty good idea of what we have to offer. ... Most players, if they haven't agreed to terms at this point, it means they are working their way to the open market."
The Cardinals have exclusive negotiating rights with Holliday until November 20, at which time Holliday would be free to sign with any team. The Cardinals have called re-signing Holliday a "high priority," though they deny that a formal offer has been made to Holliday. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Matt Holliday, St. Louis Cardinals, Scott Boras

Which Players Make Good Managers?

Selig welcomes Cardinals' hiring of McGwire

Bud Selig is happy Big Mac is back in baseball.

Mark McGwire was hired this week as hitting coach of the St. Louis Cardinals, ending an exile for the former slugger who became notorious for his refusal to answer congressional questions about steroids use.

"Over the years I developed affection for players who I get to know and have been good," Selig said Thursday before Game 2 of the World Series.

McGwire hit a then-record 70 homers in 1998 and retired with 583 in 2001.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Mark McGwire, St. Louis Cardinals, Bud Selig

                    Sporting News staff reports

During a radio interview on 101.1 FM in St. Louis, first baseman Albert Pujols expressed his desire to remain a Cardinal for his entire career.
"The fans know and the Cardinals know that I want to be a Cardinal for my whole career," Pujols said. "I love this city. The way that this city has embraced me and my family, I don't deserve the city to do that. And when you hear all of the players that come around to this town and say, 'You guys are lucky that you are playing in St. Louis,' we have the best fans. I want to be a Cardinal for the rest of my career."
Pujols created a bit of a stir recently when he told a Dominican radio station that he was in no hurry to sign a contract extension with the Cardinals. Pujols is signed through 2010, and the team has an option for 2011, so he said there is no rush to get a deal done.
Speaking on 101.1 FM, Pujols also praised the team's decision to ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Albert Pujols, St. Louis Cardinals

                    Sporting News staff reports

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes the Cardinals' rotation finished with the second-most wins (69) in the majors, was the only unit to throw over 1,000 innings and posted a solid 3.66 ERA this season.
However, there are questions for next season. Righthanders Joel Pineiro, a 15-game winner, John Smoltz and Todd Wellemeyer will become free agents this offseason. Kyle Lohse, injured for much of 2009 after winning 15 games in 2008, is under contract through 2012. According to the newspaper, there is a good chance Smoltz will re-sign with St. Louis.
General manager John Mozeliak told the Post-Dispatch that the fifth spot likely will be filled from within the organization. Candidates include Jaime Garcia, Mitchell Boggs and P.J. Walters.
The team also will have a decision to make at third base. After having successful surgery Monday to repair a completely torn tendon sheath in his left wrist, Mark DeRosa is ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, St. Louis Cardinals, John Smoltz, Joel Pineiro, Todd Wellemeyer, Kyle Lohse

With Cardinals job, McGwire looks to rebuild his image

Look for McGwire to say this will be this will be a one-time deal and from ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, St. Louis Cardinals, Mark McGwire
