St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols has had surgery on his right elbow, and the team expects the 2005 NL MVP to be ready for spring training.

Pujols' operation, performed by Cardinals team physician Dr. George Paletta, included decompression and transposition of the ulnar nerve. It did not require reconstruction of the medial collateral ligament.

Pujols was second in the NL with a .357 average and led the Cardinals with 37 homers and 116 RBIs.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Albert Pujols, St. Louis Cardinals

The Touching Story of Pete Gray

Pete Gray is a player you may not have heard of. He only hit .218, with no homers and 13 RBI in his lone season, 1945. He played for the St. Louis Cardinals as a left fielder.
I know what you're thinking. Why am I talking about him? Well, he's the position player version of Mordecai Brown, except more extreme.
Peter Gray was born in Nanticoke, PA. He was right-handed until the age of six. He slipped riding his father's wagon and his right arm was caught in the spokes. He hurt it so severely his right arm had to be amputated.
His love for the game of baseball kept him playing.
He fielded the ball one-handed, catching the ball in his glove and then quickly removing his glove and transferring the ball to his hand in one motion.
His speed and contact hitting carried him to a very successful minor-league career. In 1944, he was named Southern League Most Valuable Player. In 1944, he had 63 steals and hit .333.
Talk about heart.
During his career, he played for many semi-pro teams, such as ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, St. Louis Cardinals

The Spectacular Story Of Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown

Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown is one of the best pitchers of all time. Born in a farm on October 7, 1876, Brown had a lot to overcome to become a Major League pitcher. He lost a finger at the age of seven to a corn-shredder.
Brown was also called "Miner" by teammates because before he was a ballplayer, he worked in a coal mine for several years.
He learned to pitch by aiming rocks at a barn wall and other wooden surfaces. Luckily for Brown, his grip on the ball caused an abnormal amount of spin on the ball.
Brown became a dominant pitcher, going 239-130 with an incredibly low 2.06 ERA. He played for the Cardinals in 1903, the Cubs from 1904-1912, the Reds in 1913, the St. Louis Terriers and Brooklyn Tip Tops in 1914, the Chicago Whales in 1915 and the Cubs again in 1916.
Wondering why they called him Three Finger Brown?
Reports later found that he actually had three fingers and not four. When he had the injury on the corn shredder, he injured another finger! Brown kept quiet about it until ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Oct. 10 -- By midway through the first inning, they must have been running through complex bullpen scenarios on the Boston Red Sox' bench, so awful was the start to Daisuke Matsuzaka's night, so tenuous were his chances of getting even three outs. By the start of the seventh,...

It Was Worth the Wait: Philadelphia Phillies Win Game One of NLCS

It was worth the wait. It has been 15 long years since the Philadelphia Phillies played in the National League Championship Series. In that time, Blackberries became more than just a fruit, cassettes disappeared, and beer developed born on dates. 15 years is a long time. But tonight, no true Phillies fan is complaining. Showing why Mike Schmidt called them the team to beat, the Phillies stormed back from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 in Game One of the NLCS. Cole Hamel’s seven strong innings erased all memories of Joel Bennett and his 9.00 ERA in 1999. Chase Utley’s two-run, game-tying home run suddenly made J.D. Drew’s snub seem unimportant. Scott Rolen’s traitorous defection to St. Louis was neutralized when Pat Burrell went deep to put the team ahead. There are still three more games to be won in this series. As Burrell told Ken Rosenthal on the Fox Post Game Show , “There is a lot of work to be done.” But for at least one ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philadelphia Phillies, NLCS, Mike Schmidt, Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals

Giambi up for coveted Goulet Award

Jason Giambi won’t be in the mix for any postseason awards, but the Big G is one of the finalists for this year’s Goulet Award.

Not familiar with that honor? It’s named for the great Robert Goulet, and it goes to the “most impactful mustached American” from the past year.

The 16 finalists were selected by the American Mustache Institute from a pool of more than 60 nominees. You can vote for Giambi (or anybody else, for that matter) at the AMI web site .

The winner will be announced on Oct. 25 in St. Louis at ‘Stache Bash 2008, a benefit for Challenger Baseball, a baseball league for children and adults with disabilities.

In other news, the Arizona Fall League kicks off tomorrow, with Phil Hughes, Austin Jackson, Humberto Sanchez, Jeff Marquez, Kevin Whelan, Juan Miranda and Kevin Russo all playing for the Peoria Javelinas.

If you want to keep up with the Arizona Fall League for the next six weeks, check out www.mlbfallball.com .

Mixed Emotions From a Cardinals Fan: Cubs World Series Drought Hits 100

Ah, I can't say I didn't see this coming. The Cubs three game exit of the playoffs this year was truly pathetic. I haven't seen such a crappy effort since my dog whined and begged to get my pizza crust last week. No effort, just whining and begging.
But, I actually kind of feel sorry for the Cubs. I mean, it's easy to say now that they are knocked out, but how much more terrible could they have played? That series was a joke. I'll take you inside my head, and try to explain the internal civil war I'm fighting.
  Reasons to Pity:
  5) This one will linger
Geo Soto is probably going to win the NL Rookie of the Year. And then everybody will remember how the Cubs DIDN'T win anything in the playoffs. Ouch.
Plus, Kosuke Fukudome isn't going anywhere, and he was God-awful in the playoffs too. That memory will carry over to next year much more so then the infield fielding woes or Carlos Zambrano's tired shoulder. You have to wonder if the Cubs are dealing with a dead contract with the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, Carlos Zambrano, Lou Piniella

Carpenter won't have surgery, hopes rest is cure

Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter will not have surgery for a nerve problem in his shoulder, hoping he'll be ready for spring training after therapy and rest.

General manager John Mozeliak confirmed the course of action Wednesday. Carpenter, who was shut down for the season in early September, visited a fourth specialist in New York this week.

"There's always a risk," Mozeliak said. "How you control it is going to be telltale over the next few months.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, St. Louis Cardinals, Chris Carpenter

Look in the Future: 2009 St. Louis Cardinals

Postseason is here and the Cardinals made a move already, re-signing Kyle Lohse for a four year deal at 41 million dollars. It looks like Lohse will be the number two or number three starter depending on the status of Chris Carpenter.
The 2009 free agent market looks to have some big names in key spots the Cardinals are looking for. I predict that the Cardinals will trade Adam Kennedy. So if this does happen, the top name that will be out there among second baseman is Orlando Hudson.
The Cardinals signing the O-Dog would be big. Although he is coming off a wrist injury, any team will ask for his services with his stellar defense and an average bat. I don't see the D-Backs re-signing Hudson because of the trade for David Eckstein.
With the Cesar Izturis experiment going terribly wrong, the Cards do need a shortstop. Names that will be out there are Rafael Furcal, Orlando Cabrera and maybe Edgar Renteria.
Furcal I could see the Cardinals fighting ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, St. Louis Cardinals, Kyle Lohse

Chicago Cubs: A Letter to The Lovable Losers

Dear Chicago Cubs,
Remember 1908? That was the last time you won the World Series, exactly 100 years ago. If you need some historical perspective, think about this: The last time you won a championship, Henry Ford’s Model T was in its first year of production.
But that’s not the only interesting bit of history you have.
Remember the goat? Legend has it that in 1945, a local bar owner tried to bring his goat into Wrigley Field to watch you in the World Series against Detroit. Accounts vary, but that goat was not allowed to stay at the ballpark. The owner supposedly uttered a curse upon your club, and the Series has evaded you ever since. Whether people believe in curses or not, it just wasn’t nice. Let the goat through the gate!
Remember Harry Caray? You may have known the broadcaster as one of the most beloved characters in Cubs history (1981-1997). But did you know we had him first? For 24 years, in fact (1945-1969). You can cherish the memories of Caray, though. We ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago White Sox
