Cincinnati Reds Report Cards: Scott Rolen

While Scott Rolen is still in the "honeymoon" stage with the Reds, I will be evaluating him on a 40-game season.
His hitting is better than average, which should be expected for a .284 lifetime hitter. He didn't exhibit the power that I was so hopeful he would. Three home runs in a quarter of the season make it elementary enough to do the math; 12 home runs would not cut it for a corner infielder. He had a decent OBP as well at .364.
With the leather, we saw precisely what everyone in baseball has been accustomed to witnessing. He played error-free ball while with the Reds, as well as making a few very nice gems.
Rolen is a good presence in the clubhouse and an intangible source of guidance to this squad. He is in the twilight of his career, so hopefully he will have a few good years left and will be able to hang up the spikes while still close to home (Jasper, IN).
He is an asset to an infield that is one shortstop away from being comparable to any other team. We had to mortgage the house in ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Cincinnati Reds, Scott Rolen, St. Louis Cardinals

Cardinals won't turn to Bay if Holliday leaves

                    Sporting News staff reports

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that free-agent outfielder Jason Bay isn't a priority for the team and won't be even if free-agent outfielder Matt Holliday signs elsewhere.
Bay is considered a Plan B for any team that loses the Holliday sweepstakes, but the Cardinals apparently will shift their focus to starting pitching (perhaps a trade for Detroit Tigers right-hander Edwin Jackson or someone from the Atlanta Braves' rotation surplus) and lower-priced outfield options (such as free agent Xavier Nady) if they don't re-sign Holliday.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, St. Louis Cardinals, Matt Holliday, Jason Bay, Detroit Tigers, Edwin Jackson, Atlanta Braves

Several clubs expressing interest in John Smoltz

                    Sporting News staff reports

John Smoltz apparently won't lack for options this offseason.
FoxSports.com reports the 42-year-old right-hander has drawn interest from at least seven clubs, including the St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets and Seattle Mariners. Other potential suitors include the Houston Astros, Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles.

Smoltz finished this past season with the Cardinals, going 1-3 with a 4.26 ERA as the club's fifth starter. He began the year with the Boston Red Sox but was released after posting an 8.32 ERA in eight starts.

Fox speculates that Smoltz would prefer to remain in the National League, where has played all but four months of his 22-year major league career. The site also reports that Smoltz is open to being a starter or a reliever and says that "some teams have inquired about him as a closer."

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, John Smoltz, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, Seattle Mariners, Houston Astros

Free-agent preview: Outfielders, designated hitters

Think of shopping for free-agent outfielders and DHs like this: Matt Holliday and Jason Bay are Nordstrom. Everyone else is Nordstrom Rack. "I think everyone sees there's separation after the first two," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said.

Holliday and Bay figure to sift through offers for weeks. Everyone else is less likely to be so choosy. No one wants to become this offseason's Bobby Abreu and have to take a last-minute, discount offer. (Even Abreu didn't want a repeat of last offseason. He already re-signed with the Angels.) The Red Sox, Yankees, Cardinals, Giants and Mets are among the big-money clubs with outfield/DH needs.
TOP 5 FREE-AGENT OUTFIELDERS/DHs

The Yankees got a lot out of Johnny Damon; do they risk another long-term deal?
1. LF Matt Holliday. Holliday's contract likely will be for at least five years and $90 million, and he is unlikely to be close to a deal until December's winter meetings. Will the Cardinals buck up and increase their ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Matt Holliday, St. Louis Cardinals, Johnny Damon, Jason Bay, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox

Angels focused on their own free agents, not Holliday

                    Sporting News staff reports

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Angels general manager Tony Reagins shot down a FOX Sports report that linked the Angels to free agent left fielder Matt Holliday.
"He's a talented player, but our focus is not on him right now," Reagins told the newspaper.
Instead, the team will try to re-sign righthander John Lackey and third baseman Chone Figgins, though neither free agent is expected to re-up before the start of free agency Friday. Reagins also said he has been in discussions with the agents for the Angels' other prominent free agents, DH Vladimir Guerrero and reliever Darren Oliver.
However, Reagins wouldn't comment on trade rumors that have linked the team to White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko or Tigers center fielder Curtis Granderson.
"There are so many different rumors out there, it wouldn't be smart to comment on them," Reagins told the Los Angeles Times. "A lot of ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Los Angeles Angels, Matt Holliday, St. Louis Cardinals, Tony Reagins, Fox Sports

Phillies consider Figgins' asking price too high

                    Sporting News staff reports

The Phillies, in their search for a third baseman to replace Pedro Feliz, apparently won't target free agent Chone Figgins.

That's not because the defending NL champions wouldn't like to add his bat, glove and speed to their already nasty lineup. It's because Figgins is seeking a reported five-year, $50 million contract, according to MLB.com.

The Web site reports that the Phillies already have $106.75 million committed to 12 players, with arbitration-eligible stars Shane Victorino, Joe Blanton and Carlos Ruiz, among others, in line for salary upgrades.

Among the more affordable free-agent candidates to fill the third base void are Adrian Beltre, Mark DeRosa and Placido Polanco, who played in Philadelphia from 2002-05.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chone Figgins, Philadelphia Phillies, Adrian Beltre, Mark DeRosa, Placido Polanco, St. Louis Cardinals

John Smoltz Could Fortify Cubs' Rotation

When Ted Lilly opted for left shoulder surgery on Nov. 3, he may have put his Chicago Cubs in the market for a free agent starter.
One week later, an mlb.com story revealed that John Smoltz, who filed for free agency Nov. 5, hopes to pitch in 2010. For many Cubs fans, the gravity of that revelation should not be overlooked.
Smoltz struggled in a brief stint in the American League last season, but came around under the tutelage of Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan after signing with St. Louis in August. He struck out 40, and issued only 9 walks, in 33 innings of work as a Cardinal.
Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild is no Dave Duncan, so Smoltz will have to show that he still has some of the magic that made him the 1996 Cy Young Award winner and that gave him 213 wins and 154 saves. If he does, however, he could be a perfect fit for the back of the Cubs' rotation, and once Lilly returns to the fold in late April, the Cubs could choose to move either Smoltz or southpaw Tom Gorzelanny to ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, John Smoltz, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, Dave Duncan

Free Agent Arbitration Analysis: Third Basemen

We move on to the hot corner, where one of the most coveted free agents might not stay at the position, as multiple teams reportedly have designs on shifting Chone Figgins to the outfield to take advantage of his speed. Nonetheless, there are some interesting decisions for teams to make when it comes time to determine whether to offer arbitration to Type A and B free agents. For more of an explanation on the compensation practices for free-agent signings, and what offering arbitration means when it comes to free agents, check out the first post in this series .

   Figgins

  SHOULD OFFER ARBITRATION
Chone Figgins, Angels (Type A; 2009 salary: $5.775 million): This is an easy one. There's already plenty of buzz around Figgins, with multiple big-market clubs lining up to offer lucrative contracts. The Angels want to keep their sparkplug, but if they lose him, the arbitration offer will guarantee them a first- or second-round pick, plus a sandwich selection. And if, for some reason, Figgins ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chone Figgins, St. Louis Cardinals

From Ninth to First: What If the 1967 Red Sox Had Tony Conigliaro in October?

In 1961, the American League added the Los Angeles Angels and the Washington Senators to become a 10-team league. Finishing in eighth place no longer meant finishing last.

Ninth to First Five years later, in 1966, the Boston Red Sox finished a dismal ninth, but they weren't as bad as they looked. The following season, they proved it by winning the pennant.
The Boston Red Sox became the first American League team to go from ninth to first.

A Sad Sidebar In one of the greatest pennant races ever, Boston edged the Tigers and Twins, each by a single game, to win the 1967 pennant.
The Red Sox faced the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series, and it took the Cardinals seven games to win, but there is a sad sidebar to the great 1967 Red Sox season.

Tony Conigliaro's Fast Career-Start Nineteen-year-old Tony Conigliaro was a rookie in 1964. He batted .290, hit 24 home runs, and had 52 RBI in 444 plate appearances.

Cardinals GM still trying to get McGwire to talk to media

                    Sporting News staff reports

Mark McGwire will meet the press. Soon. Perhaps.

St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told reporters Tuesday that he'll try in the coming days to "work through" the logistics of having McGwire talk to the media about the present, the fture and, maybe, the past.

"Clearly my energy is focused on players and looking at how to improve our 2010 team. Understanding that, the McGwire situation has to be recognized," the St. Louis Post-Dispatch quoted Mozeliak as saying. "I don't have a timetable yet on when we're going to do things or how we're going to do them. But it's not something we're ignoring or hoping will go away."

Mozeliak, who is in Chicago attending baseball's general managers' meetings, said the leaking of McGwire's hiring late last month contributed to the delay in McGwire's media availability. McGwire did not attend the press conference in which his ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, St. Louis Cardinals, Mark McGwire

Mets likely to pass on Holliday, Bay

                    Sporting News staff reports

According to the New York Daily News, free-agent outfielders Jason Bay and Matt Holliday likely are out of the Mets' price range. They might instead pursue a second-tier free-agent outfielder, or explore the trade market. Newsday speculated the Rays' Pat Burrell could be a target.
In other Mets news, the newspaper reported shortstop Jose Reyes is walking without crutches, less than a month after having surgery to repair a torn hamstring. Reyes, who didn't play after May 20 this season, is expected to be ready for spring training.
Similarly, left-hander Johan Santana, recovering from surgery to remove bone chips from his pitching elbow, is progressing well. He expects to do his normal winter throwing program.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Mets, Matt Holliday, Jason Bay, Jose Reyes, Johan Santana, St. Louis Cardinals

Flood auction offers pieces of history (AP)

Earlier this year, Bob Gibson auctioned off his Hall of Fame ring. This month, there's a price tag on the base Lou Brock touched to break the stolen base record. Those two have nothing on another St. Louis Cardinals star of the 1960s. Beyond the Gold Gloves, signed balls, gloves and the like, Curt Flood's estate is offering bidders an opportunity this weekend to purchase true history.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Bob Gibson, Hall of Fame, Lou Brock, St. Louis Cardinals
