MLB Gears Up for the Hunt for a Red October

With the 2008 regular season heading into the last month, what are the chances of back-to-back World Series for the Boston Red Sox?
First, they still need to make the playoffs. Unlike the Angels and the Cubs, the Sox can't afford to lose concentration, with Minnesota and the White Sox in good positions to make a bid for the wild card.
But neither side looks like they want to get to October, let alone overhaul the Red Sox. So, Boston's priority must be to win the AL East and avoid the Angels in the ALDS.
For a long time, the Rays had held the Sox at arm's length, leading the AL East by four or five games. But, a poor start to September for the Rays has given confidence to the Red Sox.
Defeat tonight for the Rays would see their lead cut to 2.5 games. With a three-game series at Fenway next week, and Lester, Dice-K, and Beckett set to start, I feel we could see the Sox topping the AL East by Sept. 18.
And then what?
The Sox have to hold on to the division lead, something they haven't had ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Tampa Bay Rays, Los Angeles Angels, Chicago White Sox, Minnesota Twins

In 1993, Miami became the home of the Florida Marlins, and then, in 1998, St. Petersburg became the home of the Tampa Bay Rays (then Devil Rays).
From the beginning, these franchises struggled to bring fans into their venues. Some said it was because the Marlins played in a football stadium (Dolphin Stadium) and because the Rays were in a cavernous dome (Tropicana Field, built to lure a team in).
Some thought ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Florida Marlins, Tampa Bay Rays

The New York Yankees knocked off the Tampa Bays Rays by a score of 8-4 on Wednesday night. Carl Pavano started for New York, and it was his third start since his return. He was not as effective as he was in his last two starts going four innings, while giving up three earned runs on six hits, walking two, and striking out one. Edwin Jackson went for the Rays. He lasted 3.1 innings, gave up five earned runs on ten hits, walked one, and struck out two. The Rays struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Cliff Floyd singled to center field to score B.J. Upton, and Tampa Bay went up 1-0. The Yankees struck back in the top of the second. Robinson Cano doubled to score Xavier Nady, and Ivan Rodriguez doubled to score Cano, giving the Bombers a 2-1 lead. In the top of the third inning, the Yankees poured on three runs and gave themselves a cushion. Alex Rodriguez doubled to score Bobby Abreu, Jason Giambi doubled to score Rodriguez, and Hideki Matsui singled to score Giambi, and the Yankees ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Tampa Bay Rays, New York Yankees, Alex Rodriguez, Al Reyes

Instant Replay's First Foul-Up

The game just went final: Yankees 8, Rays 4. A score that should make Red Sox fans very happy. Even with a late run by Tampa in the ninth, Alex Rodriguez's top-of-the-ninth, two-run homer wasn't needed. That's a good thing, because it makes instant replay's first failure a little less disgusting.
After a 12-pitch marathon at-bat by Bobby Abreu, which ended in a two-out walk, A-Rod came to the plate. Troy Percival's 1–2 fastball is just inside enough to get a ball call from the home-plate ump.
Rodriguez turned the next heater into a rocket, a monster shot, high over the left-field foul pole. More accurately stated, just to the left and high over the left-field foul pole.
A-Rod knew it. He didn't run. Rays catcher Dioner Navarro knew it and promptly freaked out when the umps initially signaled a home run. The ESPN announcers got all giddy, making quips about being part of history: The first use of instant replay in an official major-league game was about to occur.
The bad news? They ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Tampa Bay Rays, New York Yankees, ESPN, Alex Rodriguez

Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell expected to return to Red Sox on Friday

The Boston Red Sox have 23 games left to play until the end of the 162-game regular season. On Friday, September 5th, Red Sox SP Josh Beckett and 3B Mike Lowell are expected to return. At 11-9, Beckett has not pitched since August 17th. Becket is scheduled to face Texas Rangers' SP Kevin Millwood who is 9-7 on the season.
Beckett is returning from inflammation in his right elbow, while Mike Lowell is healing a strained right-side oblique. Michael Bowden threw a near gem against the Chicago White Sox in Beckett's place, but the veteran experience of Josh Beckett in the postseason is unparalleled. In Mike Lowell's place, the 3B spot has been filled by IF Alex Cora and IF Jed Lowrie while Lowell has been out. Again, it is nice to have the bat of Mike Lowell back in the game at which point Lowrie or Cora could play SS.
Their returns could not have come at a better time for the Red Sox. The Red Sox presently lead the AL Wild Card Race, and are 3.5 games out of first place behind the infamous ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Josh Beckett, Mike Lowell, Boston Red Sox, Al Reyes, Tampa Bay Rays

Rays of light from Yankees? Not quite

Good win for the Yankees. Where was this baseball a month ago? Two months ago?

The Yankees are actually 8-5 against the Rays this season, the only team in the division with a winning record against the AL East leaders. It’s definitely too late for the Yankees to make a run at the division crown, but can they actually catch the Red Sox for the wild card?

There’s been a lot of talk about how the Yankees need to just trim one game off Boston’s lead each week, making the final weekend at Fenway Park meaningful. But how meaningful will it really be if they’re three out with three to play?

“Well, that’s no pressure We have to make up a game a week, then we’ve got to sweep them in Boston,” Mike Mussina said. “Let’s just win on the day we play. I know it’s making up one game a week, but those last three games are included in the last week. We’ve got to win every day we play. It’s that simple.”

The Rockies did ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Tampa Bay Rays, New York Yankees, Fenway Park, Mike Mussina

A-Rod Hits Moonshot as Yanks Beat Rays 7-2

Alex Rodriguez hit home run No. 548, tying Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt for 12th on the career list and Mike Mussina got his 17th win of the season as the Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-2.
In the eighth inning, A-Rod blasted a moonshot to deel left center in which gravity could barely keep it down to tack on another run in what was already a 6-2 lead.
In a game in which Mussina passed Hall of Famers Bob Feller and Eppa Rixey for sole possession of 34th place on the career list, the Yankees keep playoff hopes alive with another victory.
Mike Mussina has been stellar for the Yankees this season and wants to help continue to win games for the Yankees, and also, chase 20 wins in a season, something he has never done.
“Obviously, you would like to see a guy that has been so good for so long be able to achieve that,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “It’s kind of neat that he’s chasing it.”

Yankees-Rays: Alex Rodriguez and Mike Mussina Make History

The New York Yankees defeated their division rivals, the Tampa Bay Rays, on Tuesday night by a score of 7-2.
Mike Mussina started for the Yanks and gave them a quality start. He pitched six innings, giving up two earned runs on 10 hits, with one walk, and he struck out eight.
Matt Garza took the hill for the Rays. He lasted five innings, giving up six runs, six of them earned, on five hits. Garza walked one and struck out two.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third. Cliff Floyd singled to score B.J. Upton, and the Rays jumped out to a 1-0 lead.
The Bronx Bombers would answer back in the top of the fourth. Jason Giambi hit a sacrifice fly to score Derek Jeter and tie the game at one.
Later in the frame, Xavier Nady smashed a long, two-run home run high off the catwalk of Tropicana Field and into the left-field stands, his 22nd homer of the season, and the Yankees went up 4-1.
The Yankees added two runs in the top of the fifth.
Milestone Day For Yankees

Today was a great day for Yankee fans everywhere. Not only did Mussina get win number 17, but Joba had a great outing late in the game.
The Yankees beat the Rays 7-2 today at Tropicana Field in Tampa Bay. Mike Mussina was the winning hurler as he went six strong innings. Mike allowed the only two Ray runs while giving up 10 hits, and fanning eight, and walking only one.
The victory puts the moose only 33 away from 300 wins. This was win number 267 and put Mike all alone in 34th all time moving past Bob Feller and Eppa Rixey. The win against Tampa was his 19th of his career which he is now tied with knuckleballer Tim Wakefield with 19 against Tampa Bay all time.
On the offensive side Alex Rodriguez went two for three with his 30th home run of the year. This was number 548 and it tied A-Rod with Mike Schmidt for 12th all-time.
Xavier Nady also had a home run and two RBI's in the game as well as Johnny Damon Legged out a triple.
