Orioles Prospect No. 12: Mychal Givens, SS

The run on infielders continues with 2009 draftee and newly appointed "shortstop of the future" Mychal Givens coming in as the 12th best prospect in the Orioles system.

You may remember Givens from his tenuous, down to the last minute draft-deal days. Many, including Dave Stockstill, Joe Jordan and Andy MacPhail had given up on getting a deal done with Givens before the draft deadline. And yet, there was the news, coming just hours before the Orioles rights to Givens would have expired, the Orioles and Mychal Givens agree to a pro deal worth a reported $800,000 in signing bonuses.

Sadly, due to the late nature of his signing, we didn't get to see Givens take the field, but don't worry, we'll get to see plenty of the fully rested Tampa-St. Pete native who was named the top high school player in the nation, in 2010.
Phillies decline option on 3B Feliz

The Philadelphia Phillies have declined their $5.5 million 2010 option on third baseman Pedro Feliz.

Feliz hit .266 with 12 home runs and 82 RBIs in 158 games for the National League champion Phillies this season. He'll receive a $500,000 buyout.

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. says he won't rule out bringing back Feliz.

Feliz had the winning hit for the Phillies in the 2008 World Series clincher against Tampa Bay.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philadelphia Phillies, Pedro Feliz, Tampa Bay Rays

Trade Analysis: Pirates pick up Iwamura

Akinori Iwamura will try to help the Pirates get back in the swing of things.

When the Pirates traded for Akinori Iwamura on Tuesday night, sending righthanded reliever Jesse Chavez to Tampa Bay, then exercised the second baseman’s 2010 option, Iwamura became the highest-paid Pirate at $4.85 million for 2010.

It’s an instant upgrade for Pittsburgh, as after Freddy Sanchez was dealt to the Giants this past summer, the quartet of Ramon Vazquez, Delwyn Young, Brian Bixler and Luis Cruz combined to hit .218 with four homers and 26 RBI in 285 at-bats, 222 of them by Young, who hit .311 with a .385 on-base percentage in 132 at-bats in a part-time role before the All-Star break, but struggled when pressed into everyday service. Young going back to the bench, with his ability to play the corner outfield spots as well as second base, also provides a much-needed boost for the Pirates.

Iwamura was batting .310 when he hurt his knee in a collision in Miami on May 24, and returned to hit ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Akinori Iwamura, Tampa Bay Rays, Pittsburgh Pirates

The Dismanting of the 2008 AL Champion Rays Continues: Akinori Iwamura Traded

As Tampa Bay Rays followers, we knew it wouldn't be long. As the Yankees close in our their latest purchase of another World Series, there's a stark realization that Tampa Bay fans must face.
For the Rays to be able to compete in the high priced American League East and remain financially viable, the Rays must be smarter than the Yankees and Red Sox brass.
Brian Cashman, GM for the Yankees, may win Executive of the Year, but folks, give me $500 million to spend on three players, I could win the award.
True skill is being able to identify which assets of your team you can do without and projecting where young players may be in a year or two.
Rays Vice President Andrew Friedman displayed that skill when he traded Delmon Young and another prospect for Matt Garza and Jason Bartlett, the final two pieces that got the Rays over the proverbial hump and pushed them into contention.
As the team matures, it's to be expected that the Rays won't be able to retain some of the players that brought the AL ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Tampa Bay Rays, Akinori Iwamura, New York Yankees

Swing and A Miss: Minnesota Twins Lose Out on Tampa Bay Rays' Akinori Iwamura

Well, there goes one article from the offseason que.
The Rays, finding themselves with a surfeit of infielders, seem to be on the verge of dealing second baseman Akinori Iwamura and another player to the Pirates for reliever Jesse Chavez. However, for much of the day, it looked like the Twins might have achieved an offseason before the season even officially ended.
Iwamura got off to a solid start, hitting .310/.377/.406 before tearing his ACL in May. One might think that such a line might earn him a shot at producing that well over a whole season, and had the Rays infield not performed so well without him, it might have.
Even missing as much time as he did, Iwamura was the Rays' sixth most productive offensive player, and he can play multiple infield positions, so how did he find himself as the Rays most expendable piece?
The simple answer is that of the five players above him in terms of VORP, three (Evan Longoria, Jason Bartlett, and Ben Zobrist) play the positions that Iwamura could ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Minnesota Twins, Tampa Bay Rays, Akinori Iwamura

The Tampa Bay Rays have traded second baseman Akinori Iwamura to the Pittsburgh Pirates for right-handed reliever Jesse Chavez. The deal was announced Tuesday night.
Tampa Bay Rays Send 2B Akinori Iwamura to Pirates for RHP Jesse Chavez

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports announced Tuesday that the Tampa Bay Rays have sent 2B Akinori Iwamura to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for right-handed relief pitcher Jesse Chavez.
While trades are generally encouraged to wait until after the completion of the World Series by MLB officials to avoid distraction, details of the trade were leaked Tuesday with an official announcement by the clubs to be expected in the next 24 hours.
Tampa Bay had perpetual bullpen issues throughout the 2009 campaign, one year removed from earning their first AL championship crown with the help of a bullpen that amassed an ERA of 3.55 going into the postseason, good enough to be fifth in the league.
In 2009, the bullpen had swollen to a 3.90 ERA, still good enough for fourth in the American League, but the Rays' playoff chances imploded when they fell into an 11-game losing streak in which the bullpen took six of the losses.
Iwamura missed much of 2009 with an ACL injury suffered in May.
Rays close to trading Iwamura to Pirates

                    Sporting News staff reports

The Tampa Bay Rays eased their middle infield logjam a bit today by agreeing to trade Akinori Iwamura to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
FOXSports.com and ESPN.com report the Rays will receive right-handed relief pitcher Jesse Chavez.
The Rays must first contact Iwamura, who is in Japan, and officially exercise its $4.85 million club option for 2010, before the deal can be finalized, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Both could happen as early as tonight. The club was not expected to re-sign Iwamura and would have had to pay a $550,000 buyout if it wasn't able to trade him.
Iwamura, who missed three months this season because of a knee injury, can play second base and third base. He likely will play second base in Pittsburgh: The Bucs dealt longtime second baseman Freddy Sanchez to the San Francisco Giants in August, and Andy LaRoche developed into a steady third baseman.

Tampa Bay Rays Re-Sign OF Gabe Kapler

According to an AP report, the Tampa Bay Rays have re-signed one half of their Double-Gabe right field platoon, welcoming back Gabe Kapler.
The team announced a one-year deal worth $1.05 million earlier today. The 34-year-old Kapler played in 99 games this season for the Rays, sharing time with Gabe Gross in right field, and finished the year batting .239 with eight homers and 32 RBI.
Kapler started the 2009 season platooning in center field with Tampa Bay newcomer Matt Joyce in place of regular starter B.J. Upton, who had off-season surgery on his left shoulder and was not ready for Opening Day. Kapler then began to platoon in right field with Gross.
Kapler's specialty is playing against southpaws, a job he did particularly well in 2008 and continued in 2009. He hit .354 with four of his eight homers in 82 at-bats against left-handers. Gross, Ben Zobrist or another player would usually get the start in right field when a rightie was on the mound.
Kapler initially signed with Tampa Bay last ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Tampa Bay Rays, Gabe Kapler, Gabe Gross
