Travis Outlaw Breaks Foot, Same Injury Martell Had Last Year

In tonight's victory in Charlotte, the Blazers suffered a major personnel loss. Travis Outlaw has a stress fracture to his fifth metatarsal, which is the same injury Martell Webster had last season. We all know how that went. The injury happened on a relatively normal play, he was coming out to defend Gerald Wallace and planted his foot when Wallace went to the hoop. This is a critical loss considering Travis' status as the third or fourth scoring option. Not only that, but the Blazers are thin enough with depth in the front court. Jason Quick sums up the situation nicely: X-Rays revealed a stress fracture of the fifth metatarsal...the small bone on top of the foot near the small toe. It is the same injury, to the same foot, that teammate Martell Webster endured last season. Webster suffered his initial fracture in October and didn't return until December. Burrell Appears To Be On The Block For The Rays

Rumors are flooding the Internet that the Rays are offering up Pat Burrell in trade talks. The Rays are desperate to part with the bad contract of Burrell, a major disappointment in the DH role for the team and are even willing to trade bad contracts to rid themselves of the much maligned player. Burrell was an awful .221 at the plate with just 14 homers and 64 runs batted in. With limited athletic ability making him a liability in the outfield, Burrell's return on investment on his $9 million a year salary is very low. Tampa Bay is focusing on solidifying their bullpen and finding some additional offensive help this off-season and have been connected to a deal for Cubs outfielder Milton Bradley. Bradley also disappointed in Chicago, batting just .257 with 12 home runs and 40 RBI while alienating many in the organization. The run on infielders continues with 2009 draftee and newly appointed "shortstop of the future" Mychal Givens coming in as the 12th best prospect in the Orioles system. You may remember Givens from his tenuous, down to the last minute draft-deal days. Many, including Dave Stockstill, Joe Jordan and Andy MacPhail had given up on getting a deal done with Givens before the draft deadline. And yet, there was the news, coming just hours before the Orioles rights to Givens would have expired, the Orioles and Mychal Givens agree to a pro deal worth a reported $800,000 in signing bonuses. Sadly, due to the late nature of his signing, we didn't get to see Givens take the field, but don't worry, we'll get to see plenty of the fully rested Tampa-St. Pete native who was named the top high school player in the nation, in 2010. The Philadelphia Phillies have declined their $5.5 million 2010 option on third baseman Pedro Feliz. Feliz hit .266 with 12 home runs and 82 RBIs in 158 games for the National League champion Phillies this season. He'll receive a $500,000 buyout. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. says he won't rule out bringing back Feliz. Feliz had the winning hit for the Phillies in the 2008 World Series clincher against Tampa Bay.

Akinori Iwamura will try to help the Pirates get back in the swing of things. When the Pirates traded for Akinori Iwamura on Tuesday night, sending righthanded reliever Jesse Chavez to Tampa Bay, then exercised the second baseman’s 2010 option, Iwamura became the highest-paid Pirate at $4.85 million for 2010. It’s an instant upgrade for Pittsburgh, as after Freddy Sanchez was dealt to the Giants this past summer, the quartet of Ramon Vazquez, Delwyn Young, Brian Bixler and Luis Cruz combined to hit .218 with four homers and 26 RBI in 285 at-bats, 222 of them by Young, who hit .311 with a .385 on-base percentage in 132 at-bats in a part-time role before the All-Star break, but struggled when pressed into everyday service. Young going back to the bench, with his ability to play the corner outfield spots as well as second base, also provides a much-needed boost for the Pirates.
