Pictures of Lilly (and Santana) haunt Yankees

Call me Rip Van Squawker. After being sick and snoozing for nearly a week, I finally felt semi-decent today. Unfortunately, I felt ill all over again while watching the Cubs (and Mets) while the Yankees-Red Sox game was delayed - and then rained out.

I don’t know what was worse - seeing Johan Santana step up and be the ace for the Mets, or watching former Yankee Ted Lilly was pitching no-hit ball through six innings for the Cubs. To think of what the Yanks could have done with either of these pitchers made me sick.

And if the Yanks had gotten to play, they would have faced Daisuke Matsuzaka, who has gone 18-2 this year. But hey, if the Yanks had gotten to play yesterday, we would have at least have Sidney Ponson pitching for the Bombers. What does it say about Ian Kennedy’s standing - or lack thereof - on this team that the Yanks are still throwing out Ponson instead of him?

I wonder if the Steinbrenner family, who for some inexplicable reason still seems to think Brian Cashman ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Yankees, Brian Cashman, Johan Santana, Ted Lilly

Cubbies Need Rich Harden Early in Playoff Rotation

Over the last few days, there has been much speculation about whom the Cubs should have in their starting rotation for the playoffs. The logical choice would seem to be Zambrano, Harden, Dempster, and Lilly—in that order.
There has been panic over Carlos Zambrano's last two starts in St. Louis and in New York. Now, if that panic is justified, then the rotation could be Dempster, Zambrano, Harden, and Lilly. To leave Rich Harden as the No. 4 pitcher behind Ted Lilly would be inexcusable.
Here's a guy with a 2.03 ERA, a combination of his stats in Oakland and with Chicago. Granted, Harden does not go nine innings, but it's almost guaranteed that he'll pitch five to six innings, allowing only one or two runs. With those kinds of numbers and the Cubs' offense, you like your chances if you are a Cubs' fan.
How tragic would it be to go down 0-2 in the NLDS, only to have—gasp—Ted Lilly as the man to save your season? Over Rich Harden? Whom did we trade ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, Rich Harden, Carlos Zambrano, St. Louis Cardinals, Ted Lilly

Ted Keith: Second-half Santana saves Mets again

NEW YORK -- There have been times this season when Johan Santana comes out of a game looking as though he has been asked to give up his first-born child. For no one knows better than the ultra-confident Santana that as long as he is on the mound, the ball, and the Mets' playoff hopes, are in very good hands. But when those things are entrusted to almost any other pitcher, especially the bullpen that has blown a mind-boggling 10 leads he has handed them, the Mets' chances are as confidence-inspiring these days as Wall Street.
