Which MLB team needs Roy Halladay the most?

The Roy Halladay sweepstakes that began (and ended) in July are back on, and it appears new Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos is determined to deal his ace -- out of necessity. Halladay will be a free agent after the 2010 season and has announced his intention to test the free-agent market.
There obviously is plenty of interest in the six-time All-Star, workhorse and former Cy Young winner. Everyone from the up-and-coming Rangers to the World Series champion Yankees is drooling over Halladay, but which team needs him most? In order, those teams are:
  1. Dodgers. Their lack of an ace was glaring in the 2009 postseason. Free agent John Lackey is probably out of the team's price range, especially with the ownership situation in limbo because of the pending divorce of Frank and Jamie McCourt. Clayton Kershaw has the stuff to develop into an ace, but he isn't there yet. And the enigmatic Chad Billingsley has too many bouts with inconsistency. Randy Wolf could leave as a free agent, as could ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Roy Halladay, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, Toronto Blue Jays

Rangers streamline front office

This offseason, Jake Krug was named assistant director for player development, the No. 2 position in the farm system behind Scott Servais. It is one of several moves that illustrate the Rangers' main goal in a major reorganization of their front office this winter.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Texas Rangers

Chicago White Sox Sign Omar Vizquel

I love when teams make good personnel decisions. It makes me giddy.
Today, the Chicago White Sox signed SS and future Hall of Famer Omar Vizquel to a one-year, $1.375 million deal. Vizquel, who is 43-years old hit .266 with a .660 OPS in 2009 with the Texas Rangers.
I really like this move for the White Sox.
Vizquel will serve as a backup infielder and as a mentor to Alexei Ramirez and Gordon Beckham. Who better to serve as a mentor to a young middle infielder than one of–if not the best defensive (cue Cardinal fan crying Ozzie Smith here) shortstop of all time.
The Rangers used Vizquel in this role last year for Elvis Andrus and that worked out quite well.
Not only will Vizquel serve as a mentor, but he can still pick-it with anyone defensively. He is not a washed up player, who is just looking to hang on. AKA: “A veteran presence.”
Vizquel played 62 games in the field last year at short, second, and third, and didn’t commit an error. His UZR at shortstop was 5.3, which is very, very ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago White Sox, Omar Vizquel, Texas Rangers

Rudy Jaramillo Could Make Curtis Granderson a Fit for Chicago Cubs After All

Over the past 10 days or so, rumors have encircled the Detroit Tigers and the Chicago Cubs, centered around the potential trade of current Tigers center fielder Curtis Granderson to the Cubs. Chicago has made it a priority to find a center fielder with an above-average bat this winter, and with a career line of .272/.344/.484, Granderson certainly fits that bill.
However, some have peremptorily impugned the trade on two grounds: first, that Granderson would command too high a price in trade to Detroit; and second, that Granderson (like current Cubs outfielder and fellow left-handed hitter Kosuke Fukudome) cannot hit left-handed pitching.
Of the first objection, I won't speak further here, other than to say that I place far less stock in the hype surrounding Starlin Castro than do most Cubs fans, and would not hesitate to leverage his sky-high current value into a steal of a deal this offseason. Primarily, I want to focus upon the second issue.
It is, to be sure, a serious issue, and a damning ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Curtis Granderson, Chicago Cubs, Rudy Jaramillo, Texas Rangers

Rangers could kill rumored three-way deal

                    Sporting News staff reports

According to the New York Post, the proposed three-way deal including the Mets, Cubs and Rangers could stall because Texas isn't willing to give up righthander Kevin Millwood so easily.
The deal reportedly would send Millwood from Texas to New York, second baseman Luis Castillo from New York to Chicago and outfielder Milton Bradley and cash from Chicago to Texas.
The Mets would like to free up second base to pursue free agents Orlando Hudson and Chone Figgins as possible replacements at the position.
The Cubs also would like to upgrade at second base, as well as in the outfield. But that likely won't be possible unless they can shed at least some of Bradley's salary.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Texas Rangers, Kevin Millwood, Milton Bradley, Chicago Cubs, Luis Castillo

Cubs could move Bradley in three-team deal

                    Sporting News staff reports

There has been talk of a three-way trade involving the Cubs, Mets and Rangers, the Chicago Tribune reports.
In the proposed trade, the Cubs would send outfielder Milton Bradley and cash to the Rangers, the Rangers would send righthander Kevin Millwood to the Mets, and the Mets would send second baseman Luis Castillo to the Cubs.
The Mets have been public about their desire to deal Castillo, a move that would allow them to pursue second baseman Orlando Hudson in free agency. Similarly, the Cubs have made no secret about their plan to ship Bradley out of town after the outfielder's team-imposed suspension at the end of the 2009 season.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers, New York Mets, Milton Bradley, Kevin Millwood

Rangers expected to lose Marlon Byrd to free agency

                    Sporting News staff reports

The Texas Rangers' Web site reports center fielder Marlon Byrd is expected to sign elsewhere after free agency opens Friday.
Byrd is coming off a career season in which he hit .283 with 20 homers and a team-best 89 RBIs.
"We've had a decent amount of conversation," Rangers general manager Jon Daniels told the site. "I expect them to test the market. Based on what they're looking for ... we're not in a position to do that right now. We expect them to talk with other clubs and see what's out there. We're going to be looking at alternatives."
With Byrd expected to depart, Daniels said the Rangers would look for a right-handed bat in free agency.

                    Sporting News staff reports

Rangers OF Josh Hamilton told the Dallas Morning News the back injury that plagued him at the end of the season has improved and a series of tests show that no nerves are being pinched.
With that good news, Hamilton says he has been cleared to begin offseason workouts Monday. Unlike last year, however, those workouts will be in Dallas under the guidance of Rangers strength and conditioning coach Jose Vazquez. Last winter Hamilton chose to train in Arizona leading up to the season. Hamilton said he wants to work with Vazquez, who knows the injuries he suffered in a disappointing and injury-marred season and can put him on a better regimen.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Josh Hamilton, Texas Rangers, Arizona Diamondbacks

Where Will Ben Sheets Head for the 2010 MLB Season?

Ben Sheets, the former Milwaukee Brewers' ace, has not filed for free agency this year. He hasn't needed to. For the last year, Sheets, 31, sat on the free agent market, the most notable in-season free agent. Last offseason, the New York Mets and Texas Rangers were in hot pursuit of Sheets.
However, he opted for elbow surgery to repair his torn flexor tendon. After having elbow surgery he has begun rehabbing the elbow at TMI Sports Medicine in Arlington, Texas. The clinic is owned and operated by the Texas Rangers team doctor. While Sheets is not technically connected to the Texas Rangers, they did show interest in the offseason.
Texas seems like an obvious destination for Sheets, close to his home in Baton Rouge, and quickly becoming a pitcher's paradise. New pitching coach Mike Maddux quickly transformed the Rangers from their classic style of being dependent on the long-ball to a well-rounded playoff contender.
