Philadelphia Phillies Should Get Back in on Roy Halladay

So, last week, the rumors resurfaced that the Phillies are still trying to acquire Roy Halladay from the Toronto Blue Jays, and the memories of the hours leading up to the trade deadline in July relinquished.
All throughout the middle month of the season, all the talk surrounding Major League Baseball was whether or not Toronto would stick to their word and trade Halladay.
Then general manager J.P. Ricciardi said that he would listen to offers for the right-hander at the start of the month, and Philadelphia had the need and the financial flexibility to make a blockbuster.
For a couple of weeks, Ricciardi played a game of chicken with the Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr . as everyone in Ricciardi's position would. Toronto was asking for the farm while the Phils weren't willing to meet the demand.
In the end, the Phillies ended up acquiring another former Cy Young winner in Cliff Lee for far less than they would have had to give up to get Halladay, who isn't much better than Lee.

Halladay trade market could be heating up

                    Sporting News staff reports

According to the Cubs' website, the team has spoken to the Blue Jays about the possibility of trading for ace Roy Halladay.
However, the website is quick to point out that Halladay might not fit into Chicago's payroll and overall plans. Halladay will earn $15.75 million in 2010 and also will cost any team trading for him a valuable bundle of prospects. According to the Cubs' website, the team is reluctant to part with shortstop prospect Starlin Castro.
Meanwhile, the Dodgers and Blue Jays also have had discussions about Halladay, according to a Yahoo! Sports report.
Finally, the New York Post reports the Yankees will monitor the Halladay situation. They have the prospects and young major league talent to interest Toronto, and they also have the money to sign Halladay to a contract extension. The same is true of the A.L. East-rival Red Sox.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Roy Halladay, Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees

That's the price tag hanging around Roy Halladay's neck as the small collection of teams that can afford him hatch their plans to acquire arguably the best pitcher in baseball from the Blue Jays.

Come To Think Of It: Toronto GM Calling Cubs About Roy Halladay

According to MLB.com's Carrie Muskat , Toronto Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos has contacted the Cubs about a possible trade of star pitcher Roy Halladay to the Cubs.
While on the surface it would appear to be a very unlikely scenario, it does at least bear some discussion. If for no other reason than Halladay is one of the best pitchers in baseball. And moving to the National League would only make him better, in all likelihood.
Look, it's a long shot, to be sure. First off, the Cubs probably don't have the payroll room to do this unless Toronto is willing to take one of our huge salaries in return. Second, Halladay's contract is up after this season, so would it be prudent for them to trade away the farm just to obtain one year of his services?
Anthopoulos has reportedly stated he is willing to allow the trading team a period of time to work out a contract extension. That would likely be a prerequisite for any trade, though with all the long-term contracts the club already has, I can't see ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Roy Halladay, Chicago Cubs, Toronto Blue Jays

Yankees getting into the Halladay chase

                    Sporting News staff reports

According to a report on SI.com, the Yankees recently called the Blue Jays to inquire about ace Roy Halladay.
New Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos has hinted that he would deal his ace to a team within the division, thus giving the Yankees and Red Sox a more realistic chance to acquire the former A.L. Cy Young winner. There also have been indications that Anthopoulos might allow an interested team to negotiate a contract extension with Halladay before trading for him.
SI.com reports both the Yankees and Red Sox made a run at Halladay before the July 31 nonwaiver trading deadline. However, then-general manager J.P. Ricciardi wasn't willing to move Halladay to a division rival. Because any team trading for Halladay now will get only one season from him -- barring an extension -- Toronto's asking price likely has dropped.
Halladay was 17-10 with a 2.79 ERA with nine complete games and four ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Roy Halladay, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Chase Utley

Jays' GM willing to give teams time to talk contract with Halladay before making trade

                    Sporting News staff reports

In an apparent departure from his predecessor, Toronto Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos will give teams interested in trading for ace right-hander Roy Halladay a window to discuss a contract extension with the pitcher.

The Blue Jays' Web site reports Anthopoulos would allow teams to talk to Halladay about an extension if it means the interested team will improve its trade offer. Halladay is signed through next season.

Former GM J.P. Ricciardi opposed the idea of a contract window when he was shopping Halladay last summer.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Roy Halladay, Toronto Blue Jays, J.P.
Another Roy Halladay Cy Young Calibre Season

I hate to say it...but for the fourth year in a row, Roy Halladay crafted another Cy Young calibre season and had nothing to show for it.

The Baseball Writers Association of America did the right thing by giving the Cy Young to Zack Greinke. Though not your typical runaway candidate, Greinke did everything right on a team that played so horribly wrong throughout the season. Greinke didn't have an impressive win/loss record, however he certainly made up for it all other categories.
The voting went down pretty much as expected, but I would have liked to see Doc finish a little higher than fifth place. Ultimately, I guess it doesn't really matter because you either win the Cy Young award or you don't—there isn't any purple fifth-place-finish ribbon like there was at the track & field meet in public school. Out of all the votes, the one that stands out like a sore thumb was the ballot which included Justin Verlander as a first place vote. This is just another example of a voter not digging ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Cy Young, Roy Halladay, Zack Greinke, Toronto Blue Jays

Time for Roy Halladay Suitors To "Suit Up"

It's a bitter pill to swallow, but I'm come to grips with the fact that Roy Halladay is likely not going to be a Blue Jay for much longer. The poor guy was dangled like chum in front of hungry sharks at the trade deadline, and now Alex Anthopoulous has the daunting task of trading away the franchise's best player. By this point, I'm sure Alex Anthopoulos and Paul Beeston have narrowed down the candidates to which they are willing to trade Roy Halladay to. Ultimately, Doc has the final the say the matter so that means any potential suitors must be contendors and give him a chance at winning. Below is what I believe to be the short list of candidates for Roy Halladay: Los Angeles Angels The Angels seem to be the front-runners on the short-list to land Halladay in a trade. They have handily won the AL West the past five out of six years and would give Doc arguably the best chance to pitch in the playoffs. Whether or not John Lackey walks away from the Angels, they could definitely ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Roy Halladay, Toronto Blue Jays, Philadelphia Phillies

Blue Jays center fielder Vernon Wells has had surgery on his left wrist and is expected to be ready for spring training.
Toronto Blue Jays' Silver Sluggers

Of all the sights that Blue Jays fans were subjected to over 162 games this year, the one above is one that I never got sick of seeing. For their incredible efforts this season, Adam Lind and Aaron Hill were rewarded as r ecipients of the American League Silver Slugger awards . The two brought strength and power back to the heart of the Blue Jays lineup in 2009, combining for 71 home runs and 222 RBIs. Prior to the start of the 2009 season, like most folks I would have been happy to have one 30/100 hitter in the lineup, let alone two. As much as I was screaming that the Jays needed to sign a free agent big bat, Hill and Lind have proven that sometimes the best solutions come from within the organization. Congratulations boys, job well done.

Major League Baseball announced its Silver Slugger award winners Thursday, recognizing the top offensive players at each position in both leagues. The awards were voted on by major league managers and coaches, who weren't allowed to vote for players from their own teams.

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter continued to add to his trophy case, adding the Silver Slugger for A.L. shortstop. In addition to the World Series championship, Jeter also received the 2009 Hank Aaron Award and a Gold Glove in recent days. This was Jeter's fourth Silver Slugger. Teammate Mark Teixeira won the award for first base in the A.L., after also picking up a Gold Glove earlier in the week.

Twins catcher Joe Mauer, Rays third baseman Evan Longoria, Angels center fielder Torii Hunter and Mariners right fielder Ichiro Suzuki joined Jeter and Teixeira as 2009 A.L. Silver Slugger recipients and Gold Glove winners.
Free Agent Arbitration Analysis: Shortstops

There are only three shortstops hitting the free-agent market who are classified as Type A free agents, with no Type Bs. And the decision of whether to offer arbitration and potentially accrue draft-pick compensation could not be more clear cut than it is here. For more of an explanation on the compensation practices for free-agent signings, and what offering arbitration means when it comes to free agents, check out the first post in this series .

   Scutaro

  SHOULD OFFER ARBITRATION
Marco Scutaro, Blue Jays (Type A; 2009 salary: $1.5 million after bonuses on $1.1 million base): One of the bargain breakout players of the 2009 season, Scutaro posted an OPS+ of 111, his first time over the 100 mark that denotes average performance. He struck out a career-high 75 times, but drew a career-high 90 walks and scored 100 runs for Toronto, while playing a very solid shortstop on artificial turf. At 34, there's every chance that Scutaro will regress even in spite of a solid progression on his ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Toronto Blue Jays

The Value of the Hometown Discount

It's a term that's been thrown around quite often during this week's MLB hot stove —"hometown discount." For those unfamiliar with the term, a hometown discount is when a player takes a bit of a pay cut to play in the city that they grew up in, has family in, or is where they started their career.
The problem with the hometown discount is that it seems like the valuation is at an astronomical level. To assume that a player would consider signing with club solely for the reason that it's their hometown is a bit ludicrous. While it may play some part in their decision, in my mind here are the top reasons why a player signs a contract with a particular team:

    The money
    The chance to win
    Proximity to home
    Strip clubs per capita

One such example was last year when AJ Burnett decided to opt out of his contract with the Blue Jays. Some speculated that he might sign with the Baltimore Orioles so he could be close to his wife Karen and their family in ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Toronto Blue Jays

Lyle Overbay to the Mariners? Seattle Discussing Trade for Toronto First Baseman

The Seattle Mariners have discussed a possible trade for Toronto first baseman Lyle Overbay, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
Overbay hit .265 with 16 HR, 64 RBI, 112 H, .372 OBP, 74 BB, .466 SLG in 432 AB.
His 74 walks would have been a Mariner team high.
His on-base/slugging percentage and 35 doubles would have been good for the team's second best mark.
His 64 RBI would have been good for fourth on the team last year, Franklin Gutierrez had 70 but only drove in six more runs in 133 more ABs. His .265 average would have tied Adrian Beltre for fourth on the team.
Overbay's 16 HRs, 112 Hs, and 57 Rs would have been good for fifth on the team.
Seems like someone we should definitely take a look at if the price is right, as he ranks no lower than fifth in every offensive category in comparison to the 2009 Mariners.
The Blue Jays would likely eat a large portion of his $7,950,000 contract figure in any deal.
Interesting report from Fox regarding potential intentions for ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Seattle Mariners, Lyle Overbay, Toronto Blue Jays, Franklin Gutierrez, Adrian Beltre

The Blue Jays haven't decided whether or not to trade Roy Halladay this winter, but if they choose to move the former Cy Young winner, a bidding war could break out between the Yankees and Red Sox.

Yanks will inquire about Jays' Halladay

CHICAGO -- The world champion Yankees will inquire about superstar pitcher Roy Halladay, setting up a potential bidding competition that didn't exist last summer when now-deposed Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi made it clear he wanted to avoid trading Halladay within the division.

New GM scouts for ways to make Jays relevant

CHICAGO -- Alex Anthopoulos, the majors' youngest general manager at 32, wants to change the baseball world -- the scouting world, that is.

Anthopoulos is on his way to making the Blue Jays' scouting department the biggest, and he hopes best, in the game. While Toronto's staff was scaled back under former GM J.P. Ricciardi, who relied on statistical analysis more than most clubs, Anthopoulos is going in the other direction.

This is a model that no one else is doing," Anthopoulos told Sporting News at the general managers meetings Tuesday.

Instead of trying to spend with the big-money teams, the Blue Jays will try to out-scout them. "If we have the best scouts and development people, we'll make the best trades, we'll sign the best players and ultimately that will result in the best players up in Toronto," Anthopoulos said.

His first step is to flood the land with scouts. He plans to double the size of the club's scouting department. Anthopoulos says he will boost the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Toronto Blue Jays

Phillies could revisit Halladay

                    Sporting News staff reports

After settling for lefthander Cliff Lee at the nonwaiver trading deadline this season, the Phillies could make another run at Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. told the newspaper that the bullpen remains the team's focus, but a source added that the Phillies are interested in "winning now."
The Phillies' balked at Toronto's demands before the deadline, but the asking price might come down. The newspaper noted P Kyle Drabek still is on Philadelphia's untouchable list in any trade.
As the Blue Jays explore a trade for Halladay, up to a dozen teams are expected to show interest. But the Phillies have the advantage of back-to-back World Series appearances. "We're in a fortunate position," Amaro told the newspaper. "We've become an attractive place to go."

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philadelphia Phillies, Roy Halladay, Toronto Blue Jays, Cliff Lee

Milton Bradley part of three-way trade talks with Mets, Jays

                    Sporting News staff reports

Add this to the Milton Bradley rumor pile as baseball's general managers meet this week: The Chicago Cubs reportedly are working to move him in a potential a three-team deal with the New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays.

FoxSports.com reports the Cubs have discussed dealing Bradley to the Mets for second baseman Luis Castillo. The Mets would then flip Bradley to the Jays for first baseman Lyle Overbay.

The Fox report says such a deal is a "long shot" to happen, however. An unnamed major league source tells the Web site that new Jays GM Alex Anthopolous is reluctant to make Bradley his first significant offseason acquisition.

Fox adds that Tampa Bay continues to be Bradley's most likely destination, perhaps in a deal for Rays outfielder Pat Burrell, if the Cubs agree to pay a significant portion of Bradley's $12 million salary for 2011. Burrell can become a free agent after 2010.

The Blue Jays' Man Behind the Curtain Goes to Work

Occasionally it's best not to know what's going on behind the scenes. During last season, the disarray and inner workings of the Blue Jays organization were revealed for all to see. Unfortunately. Now Alex Anthopoulos has the dubious task of taking his place behind the curtain and starting the magical Oz machine once again.
Anthopoulos didn't waste any time this during this relatively busy weekend. First, there was the "state of the franchise" conference call on Saturday. Lately there's been rumblings about the Jays wanting to trade Lyle Overbay to the D-Backs for Chris Snyder. According to the Arizona Public , trade talks were well underway but were put to a halt when the Jays realized that Snyder's back wasn't all it was cracked up to be (sorry...I couldn't help myself). It appears as though A.A. is making good on his word that he would be active in the trade market this off-season. The wheels are already set in motion because a move like this would benefit the team two-fold:

                    Sporting News staff reports

A potential deal between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Toronto Blue Jays has been put on hold, according to a major league source cited by MLB.com.
Under the deal, as reported by the Arizona Republic, the D-backs would send catcher Chris Snyder to the Jays for first baseman Lyle Overbay. The two sides reportedly were making good progress Saturday before hitting a snag.
Overbay was drafted by the Diamondbacks in 1999 and played for them from 2001-03. He is due $7 million in 2010 in the final year of his contract. Snyder lost his everyday catching job to Miguel Montero this past season. He has two years remaining on a three-year, $14 million contract.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Toronto Blue Jays, Arizona Diamondbacks, Chris Snyder, Lyle Overbay, Miguel Montero

Why the Yankees' World Series Win May Have Saved MLB

As a citizen of Toronto, Canada, I am thrilled that the New York Yankees have won the World Series.
People around me have asked, "Shouldn't you be booing the New York Yankees because they knock out the Toronto Blue Jays from the playoffs every year?"
To those people I have responded, "It was necessary that the Yanks won their 27th World Series in order to save the league."
The Yankees' win means there will be no need for them to go out and buy the best players in the world in order to further strengthen their team.
Yes, there have been complaints about this for years—that the Yankees have limitless money and can get any player they want or need.
This year, there isn't going to be that need to change the structure of the team, as they have delivered on their promise to the city of New York to win the World Series.
This will open up the player market this offseason and allow for other teams to pick up free agents.
Yes, it may help the other big guns like the Boston Red Sox, but an ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays
