World Cup will miss Ireland

Just for starters, the matchup was a farce. France and Ireland shouldn't be playing each other for the right to enter the World Cup; they should be automatics, every time, right along with Brazil, England, Italy and at least a dozen others. Qualifying rounds...

Not the solution, but could have been an Answer

There are two very good reasons why the Knicks are knuckleheads for passing on Allen Iverson. For one thing, they've fallen completely off the radar in New York. I've been following sports since about 1960 around here, and I can't remember a time when the Knicks were more irrelevant. For those of us who love the sport, it's a truly sad era. A few silly Iverson headlines could not have hurt.

The other reason was also important: The Knicks don't own their draft pick, because Isiah Thomas foolishly sent it away unprotected for Stephon Marbury. I will go to my grave believing that Thomas could have protected that pick if he insisted, but didn't even think it was necessary to negotiate for that concession because he was too prideful to foresee this franchise's complete collapse.

In any case, Iverson could have won a few extra games for the Knicks and it wouldn't have cost them any Ping-Pong balls in the draft. They've already thrown all their Ping-Pong balls at Marbury.

I guess now we go back to ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Brazil, New York Knicks, Allen Iverson, Italy, Germany

The European champions regained the top spot they lost to the South Americans in July after friendly wins over fellow World Cup qualifier Argentina and Austria. Brazil beat England 1-0 and Oman 2-0 in the past week but was still overtaken because older ranking points lost value and its wins came against lower-ranked...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: Soccer, Brazil, Spain, FIFA, World Cup, Argentina, Austria
