CONCACAF endorses US bid to host World Cup (AP)

The U.S. bid to host the World Cup again in 2018 or 2022 has been endorsed by CONCACAF, soccer's governing body for North and Central America and the Caribbean. Mexico withdrew its bid in September, leaving the United States as the lone contender from the Americas. "The United States can count on the full support of CONCACAF," CONCACAF president Jack Warner said Monday.

FIFA announces global fan parks for 2010 World Cup (AP)

Soccer supporters in seven international cities will be able to watch Africa's first World Cup for free at fan parks. FIFA announced Monday there will be fan parks in Sydney, Berlin, London, Paris, Rome, Mexico City and Rio de Janeiro. Another 10 sites will be chosen in host cities in South Africa ahead of the tournament in June.

Michelle Wie has won the first LPGA event of her career, fulfilling the promise of a decade with a 3-under par 69 to win the Lorena Ochoa Invitational by two strokes over Paula Creamer. Morgan Pressel (67), Jiyai Shin (71) and Cristie Kerr (72) were three back on Sunday. Wie finished a 13-under 275 after starting the day at the Guadalajara Country Club tied for the lead with Kerr at 10 under. Wie, 20, qualified for a USGA event at age 10 and played an LPGA event when she was 12.

The Michelle Wie era has, at long last, begun. After years of injury and controversy, too much hype and money and not enough birdies, Wie won her first pro tournament Sunday afternoon at the LPGA's Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Guadalajara, Mexico. Typical of Wie's highly melodramatic career, the win didn't come easily, as she survived a final round dogfight with a half-dozen of the game's biggest names, ultimately making five straight nerve-jangling pars and then a gorgeous birdie on the final hole to close out a two-stroke victory over Paula Creamer.
