The Philadelphia 76ers and Allen Iverson moved closer to one another on Monday, meeting for two hours in Dallas to discuss a potential reunion of the 10-time All-Star guard with his former team. No contract was offered and Iverson will not be on the team's roster when it plays Monday night against the Mavericks. But in a significant development, senior management of the team has given the basketball side of the organization the go-ahead to sign Iverson if it wants.

As a follow-up to my article from a few days ago debating whether or not retirement would be Iverson's final "Answer," I decided to quickly go over the reasons why the 76ers would be wise to bring A.I. back to Philly. While he has accumulated many detractors over the years and has already gone through one acrimonious divorce with the organization, I believe that if he agreed to return to the City of Brotherly Love, the Sixers would be foolish not to have him. Here's why: 1. Iverson Sells Tickets I list this reason first because it is the most urgent and most important reason. Even though a recent ESPN Sports poll ranks the 76ers as the 8th most popular team in the NBA (down from 4th in 2004), they rank a putrid 28th in the league in total attendance so far this year (29th in average attendance) and have finished 23rd each year since trading Iverson to Denver early in the 2006-07 season. Much hullabaloo on the Intertubes and locally about why the Sixers should sign the freely available Allen Iverson. So let's break it down. The Case For 1.) He'd fill some seats. The Sixers have the second lowest attendance in the NBA; only the utterly terrible Memphis Grizzlies draw fewer people. This doesn't mean that the town has soured on basketball, but you can't give away Sixers' seats right now. Elton Brand ain't filling the stands, and while Andre Iguodala and Thaddeus Young have talent, no one is stopping the world to go see them. 2) He'd win some games. Iverson is, at this point, an insulted man playing for his legacy, with his back against the wall. That's usually a great combination for his value, and even in the few games that he played in Memphis before auto-ejecting, he shot for a high percentage. 3) He'd be interesting. This site hasn't spent a word on the Sixers since the start of the regular season, and it's actually getting hard to find them on the cable ...

Jordan downplayed reports Sunday of Iverson coming back to the Sixers, saying the speculation is "probably more in the media than it actually is." The news of Allen Iverson's recent retirement makes me sick to my stomach. How can a guy who still possesses the skills to average 25 points a night decide to hang up his sneakers? Well, I guess if no team in the entire NBA wants to sign you, the only option you have is to walk away from the game. It's sad that even awful teams like the New York Knicks and Charlotte Bobcats aren't interested. It's also sad to think that it wouldn't have come to this point if Iverson had never told the Detroit Pistons he would rather retire than to come off the bench. Yeah, I know it would be pretty hard to ride the pine after being a starter for over a decade, but you have to do what the coach tells you to do. It's just the respectable thing to do. Imagine if Iverson had agreed to come off the bench for the Pistons last season and never made a single complaint. Just imagine if he had never let his ego get in the way. One thing's for sure: there would have been many more teams besides the Memphis ...
