On a night like tonight, basketball games, locker room feuds and the return of a former coach all seemed quite trivial. Abe Pollin, the patriarch of the Washington Wizards died on Tuesday afternoon, creating an emotional and somber tone as the players were informed only a few minutes before they arrived at Verizon Center. Pollin had close relationships with several of players, viewing many of them as his sons. Antawn Jamison and Gilbert Arenas both spoke of the special relationships they had with Pollin. Jamison had formed a close bond with Pollin, similar to the one he had established with the legendary Wes Unseld. Arenas said Pollin "was like a father away from home." I spoke with Caron Butler shortly after I wrote about how Gilbert Arenas said that 14 of the 15 players on the team get along and two of the three captains -- Arenas and Antawn Jamison -- would help the team heal the rifts in the locker room. The Washington Wizards silenced a few critics with a big win over the Cleveland Cavaliers in their second meeting of the season. The honeymoon didn't last long as the Wizards lost by 19 points a mere 48 hours later. So much for Antawn Jamison's return making all the difference. The win over the Cavs was, by any other name, an apparition. Cleveland was without Shaquille O'Neal and Anderson Varejao, or 18 points and 15 rebounds. Stats aside, Cleveland lost a decided size advantage, and had to rely on the ever-aging Zydrunas Ilgauskas to fill the void. Many preseason prognostications had the Wizards finishing as high as fourth in the Eastern Conference and as a definite playoff team. Through nine and a half games, however, they looked like anything but. Their 2-7 start, though somewhat surprising, can be attributed to two major factors. Washington Wizards Holding Out For a Hero, Or a Miracle

After starting the season 2-1, the Washington Wizards have lost six straight games. To make matters worse, several players are already battling injuries, making the absence of Antawn Jamison that much more devastating. Despite all the hard work the Wizards put in over the offseason, their tendency towards frailty haunts them. With Jamison's return pending, the Wizards have had to turn to Andray Blatche to fill the void. Though Blatche has performed admirably, he doesn't hold a candle to Jamison in any phase of the game. Especially leadership. If there is one thing that is apparent, it is that the Wizards are lost without Jamison. Not only does he give them 20 points and 10 rebounds a game, but he is the heart and soul of the team. Jamison is the conduit through which the success of the Wizards flows. Wizards' Jamison to make season debut vs. Cavs

Wizards coach Flip Saunders says captain Antawn Jamison will make his season debut Wednesday night against the Cavaliers. The two-time All-Star forward partially dislocated his right shoulder trying to block a shot in an exhibition game against Cleveland on Oct. 14. Jamison's shoulder had healed, but he missed Saturday night's 106-103 loss to the Detroit Pistons because of an illness. That was Washington's sixth consecutive defeat and dropped the team to 2-7.

Jamison sits, Miller practices and reaction to D-Wade's dunk

Antawn Jamison missed practice again, with what Coach Flip Saunders described as a fever and headache. Jamison had to visit a doctor, Saunders said, adding that he wasn't sure if Jamison would be available on Saturday against the Detroit Pistons. Saunders said he would make a decision after shootaround about Jamison and Mike Miller, who decided to participate in full contact drills on Friday; his first full practice since spraining his left shoulder last week against Miami. Asked how he looked, Saunders said, "Like he hadn't played in a while."
