Forward Tyrus Thomas (below) had successful surgery Saturday to repair the fractured radius in his left forearm. He will be out four to six weeks. ''We texted back and forth,'' coach Vinny Del Negro said. ''He needs some rest, and he's a little drugged up right now. He's had a long day, but everything went well. He gets re-evaluated on Tuesday.'' ... With Thomas out, the Bulls are down to 10 healthy players. They have two open roster spots, so signing another player is an option, especially because Thomas will be out at least a month. ''We're talking about that right now,'' Del Negro said, referring to himself, general manager Gar Forman and vice president John Paxson . ... Because the Bulls are so close to the luxury-tax threshold, they won't sign anyone for more than the league minimum. The Bulls were said to have offered anyone on their roster except for Luol Deng, who for some reason was considered untouchable. Anyway, Bryant initially wanted to play in Chicago, but changed his mind after seeing how much the Bulls would be giving up in the deal. He believed there wouldn't be enough talent left to win a championship. So, Bryant remained in L.A. and after the Lakers picked up Pau Gasol, they reached the NBA Finals in 2008 and won it all in 2009. And Lakers fans breathed a sigh of relief. During the preseason, Gibson proved he was an asset to this Chicago Bulls team, not just as a lanky, shot-blocking defender, but he could score the ball a little bit as well. His preseason performances earned the rookie a chance to play in the regular season, far more substantially than fellow first round pick James Johnson of Wake Forest who has played a mere fraction of the minutes of Gibson. On Friday afternoon the Chicago Bulls announced that Tyrus Thomas will undergo surgery Saturday to repair a fractured radius in his left forearm. He apparently fractured the forearm while doing chinups at practice. Now we can formally label his left arm a bust...what about the rest of him? Thomas came out of LSU after just one year with all of the athletic ability you could imagine. He was a high-flying dunk machine that was ready to fill children's walls with posters of him throwing down on opponents for years. Then the doghouse became lonely, and Thomas opted to keep it company. It started with Scott Skiles and has continued with Vinny Del Negro, as Thomas continues to fly through the air for three quarters and then sit on a chair in the fourth. His minutes have increased for three straight years, but his production hasn't followed suit. Last year, Thomas averaged 27.5 minutes per game, but only managed to average 10.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. This from a guy that had been sold ...
