J.J. Redick wants the Orlando Magic to either
significantly expand his playing time or else trade him
to a team that will do so. Magic General Manager Otis Smith counters, "We do think he’s a pretty good player, but he’s a backup 2 (shooting guard)." Last year, David Thorpe wrote (ESPN Insider subscription required) , "I've always believed Redick could become a starter for a playoff team, ...
Skeets and I pick our ridiculously premature All-Star
starting lineups; discuss a few teams that are underachieving
and overachieving just two weeks into the season; hear from our jolly good chap, Sir Stephon Marbury, and much, much more… We also Whoa Boy it up, jump on the Wizard’s cover train, and get set straight on the numbers thanks to ESPN’s David Thorpe. Enjoy.
ESPN's David Thorpe pointed out something to me
today: guess which rookie has the best PER (Insider)
? The answer is especially interesting when you consider that, like all boxscore-based stats, PER doesn't have a meaningful way to measure most ...
David Thorpe takes a look at which sophomores
are soaring and which are struggling.
Bobcat rookie Jared Dudley has been plugging away
in obscurity, but ESPN's David Thorpe knows the score:
Dudley's a keeper.
From David Thorpe's ESPN chat this morning :
Willie (Portland, OR): David, I think Pritchard will surprise
everyone and take Durant? Is this a bad move? David Thorpe: Chad Ford says it is Oden all the way. Personally, I go KD and sleep very ...

David Thorpe On Michael Beasley
[Editor's note: Given the recent and serious referee
scandal, it is easy to forget that players cheat,
too -- though in a different way. We asked David Thorpe to tell us -- and show us -- how and why players get away with breaking the rules in games.] ...
I wanted to give a shout out to
Henry Abbott of Truehoop.com for putting together a great
event last night at the ESPN Zone. On the panel interviewed by Henry was John Hollinger (ESPN writer, invented “PER” Player Efficiency Rating) David Thorpe ...
Scouts Inc.'s David Thorpe breaks down the progress
of the rookie class and updates his Top 10.
ESPN's Thorpe grades the sophomore class , and
there is a ton of interesting stuff. There were
a lot of good players in that draft, but in hindsight they were not drafted in anything like the appropriate order. Not surprisingly, Thorpe calls Brandon ...
Last year, David Thorpe wrote, "I've always believed
Redick could become a starter for a playoff team,
and he appears to be moving along that path now." I have done several posts disagreeing with Thorpe about this. He recently emailed me and during our exchange of messages I asked him point blank which starting shooting guards in the league he believes that Redick can effectively defend.
In yet another of his "break down a
player in detail" kind of stories, David Thorpe describes
Steve Nash (Insider). Thorpe says the keys to Nash's talents are his eyes, his mind, and his hands. I'm especially interested in his...

even made it to the second round (unless you
count Tim Duncan as a center, which is totally fair). ESPN's David Thorpe emails on the changing face of the NBA, in which speed kills: Dwight Howard lost. Shaquille ...
ESPN's David Thorpe watched a few summer league
games and is now reaffirming his earlier declaration that
J.J. Redick could "become a starter for a playoff team." As ESPN's Lee Corso might say, "Not so fast my friend."
I'm still surprised by David Thorpe's breathless praise
of J.J. Redick, who concluded Pepsi Summer League play
with a 19.8 ppg average on .400 shooting from the field. What reason is there to believe that Redick can be a starting guard in the NBA, let alone a starter on a playoff team as Thorpe asserts?
