Dallas Mavericks fans anticipated what the addition of Shawn Marion would look like in the starting lineup. More importantly, they wanted to see how Marion and Josh Howard played next to one another with Jason Kidd running the show. Preseason basketball came and went without the two touching the court together. Five games into the regular season, Marion was in uniform and Howard in street clothes. Finally, less than 24 hours from a home game against the Toronto Raptors, the news broke that Howard would make his much-awaited season debut from offseason ankle surgery. The team looked revived, hustling and running on its way to a dominating victory over the Raptors, 129-101. Howard helped the Mavericks to another win against the visiting Houston Rockets. Andrew Bynum: The Top Center of the Next Decade?

I know it's early in the season, but have you seen Andrew Bynum? This young man is coming of age, showing great skills, footwork, and hands, looking like an All-Star. So I ask this question, knowing I may be putting premature pressure on the big fella: Can he be the best center in the league? As of now that title belongs to Dwight Howard, aka Superman 2, and deservedly so. Howard is the best defensive big man in the league and is an explosive athlete who is developing his offensive game. Howard is also a gold medalist and the leader of a franchise which comes with much more pressure than Mr. Bynum has to deal with. That being said, when I look at the current level both are at and their potential to improve (if both remain healthy), I see Bynum having more upside. It seems to me that Howard relies on his superior athleticism to dominate his opponent while Bynum looks to have superior touch and footwork. Now that LeBron James is keeping quiet about free agency, speculation is all we've got. It may seem a stretch to consider LeBron signing with the Orlando Magic, but is it really such an absurd notion? Surely winning is important to "King James," that's something that is almost a guaranteed with the reigning Eastern Conference champs. That is not going to be the case with the New York Knicks or New Jersey Nets, two teams in disarray. Certainly LeBron would like a legitimate running mate, not someone like Mo Williams or a 37-year-old Shaquille O'Neal. Michael Jordan had Scottie Pippen. Kobe Bryant had Shaq (in his prime). Best in League: CP3's Shooting Too Good To Ignore

Welcome to the first of many Best in League rankings. This will give us an opportunity to discuss not who the MVP is, but who is playing the best basketball in the NBA. Too often players are left out of MVP consideration becaus tof the poor play of their teammates. In recent years it's been almost a requisite that the MVP also be on one of the best three teams. That doesn't make a whole lot of sense because those teams are generally deep and would in most cases be OK without that player. On the other hand guys like Chris Paul and Dwayne Wade (until last year) carry the entire load on their shoulders and are somehow punished for that in the voting. Kobe led the Washington Generals to the playoffs while scoring 57 points per game and lost to small, defensively challenged caveman playing on a stacked team. In what world does that make sense? This Week in Magic: Week Three Orlando Drops Two on the Road

So much for a perfect 82-0 season for the Magic. Orlando was stunned by the Detroit Pistons and the Oklahoma City Thunder this week. Though both games were on the road, these losses were unexpected and raises questions about the state of the team. Missing players for the Magic factors heavily in the defeats. Vince Carter has already missed three games in this young season and Rashard Lewis is finishing up a 10 game suspension. Mickael Pietrus also missed some time due to an illness. Though the losses were hard to stomach, Orlando looked impressive in their two games at home. Making up for the Detroit loss, the Magic handed the Pistons a loss of their own in Amway Arena. They also took care of a red hot Phoenix Suns team that beat the Celtics later in the week. You can't read too much into losses this early in the long NBA season and there is definitely no cause for alarm. The deep Orlando bench did look good in relief of the team's stars.
