Miller and Butler hurting, Young starting, Arenas talking

The Wizards will possibly be without two starters when they welcome back Eddie Jordan on Tuesday. The team is still waiting on the results of MRIs on Mike Miller's right calf and Caron Butler's right foot. Butler didn't practice on Monday and is questionable after playing with through the injury the past two weeks. Coach Flip Saunders said the pain became unbearable in the past week. "He decided go to an MRI to see where it's at. It swelled up a little bit yesterday so we'll know more this afternoon. I know that he had trouble being able to push off in San Antonio. He just couldn't get anything going. We thought it would be better to try to see where it's at and try to take care of it." Miller will definitely be out for an extended period of time after injuring his calf in San Antonio. Miller was

Morning brew

Well, you knew it would take something special for the Wizards to get noticed on a weekend when they played a time zone away and local fans were getting geared up for Dallas Week. And of course, it couldn't be on the court. That would be too easy. How about some locker-room dissension? Yes! It almost needs no introduction, with Michael Lee covering it not only in today's Post, but also in a blog entry we posted last night. Be sure to vote in the poll that comes with said post. Here's the view from Mike Jones of the Washington Times. If nothing else, at least Gilbert Arenas isn't shooting at the wrong basket. Yet. (TwitVid courtesy of @jose3030) (Speaking of the Nets, our Norman Chad wrote a column in which he says New Jersey should aim high: 0-82) In other Wizards news, Mike Prada of Bullets Forever weighs in

Agent ego?

I wasn't able to completely delve into the rising dissension in the Wizards' locker room, but I decided to use this forum to go a little deeper than what I could in the newspaper. You already know by now that Brendan Haywood and Gilbert Arenas made some interesting comments after the team suffered a 22-point loss in San Antonio. Haywood talked about how "ego" is standing in the way of the Wizards' success this season. He didn't single out anyone, but he spoke of the need for the players to humble themselves, stop worrying about statistics and glory and play basketball. "Check your ego at the door. Let's try and win," Haywood said. "I watch the Celtics, and that's what they do. Paul Pierce can have 12 in the fourth quarter if they're up, he don't care. That's what we gotta do. Check your ego at the door, move the

Wizards (3-8) at Spurs (4-6)

Wizards starters: Gilbert Arenas, Mike Miller, Caron Butler, Antawn Jamison, Brendan Haywood Spurs: Tony Parker, Keith Bogans, Richard Jefferson, Tim Duncan, Theo Ratliff Line: Spurs by 7.5. Back in San Antonio, where he spent his first four years in the NBA, Fabricio Oberto also returned to the Wizards after missing the past two games with a sore left hamstring. To make room for Oberto, Nick Young was moved to the inactive list (That might not sound like a big deal, but Young was the only player to all 82 games during that injury-riddled, 19-63 campaign last season). Oberto used his short time at the AT&T; Center to catch with some former teammates and other members of the Spurs' staff. He also spent time in the visiting team locker room for the first time. Oberto said that he wouldn't get too caught up the emotion on Saturday. "It's weird because I

Washington Wizards Waste Opportunities, Lose Momentum

The Washington Wizards silenced a few critics with a big win over the Cleveland Cavaliers in their second meeting of the season. The honeymoon didn't last long as the Wizards lost by 19 points a mere 48 hours later.
So much for Antawn Jamison's return making all the difference.
The win over the Cavs was, by any other name, an apparition. Cleveland was without Shaquille O'Neal and Anderson Varejao, or 18 points and 15 rebounds.
Stats aside, Cleveland lost a decided size advantage, and had to rely on the ever-aging Zydrunas Ilgauskas to fill the void.
In the absence of Shaq and Varejao, the Wizards out-rebounded the Cavaliers 49-35.
The Wizards may have made the most of the opportunity presented to them in Cleveland, but had no answer for the youth, and full health, of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The game was a showcase of offense, young talent, and absolutely no defense. All three facets went the Thunder's way.
By no means did the Thunder play a pretty game, but they did more with the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Washington Wizards, Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison, Randy Foye, Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood

Morning brew, weekend edition

There was plenty of offense Friday night on both sides (69 combined points for the Wizards' big three; 35 points by District native Kevin Durant). But that doesn't make up for how poor the Wizards looked on defense. Just when it seems like the offense is showing signs of life and Gilbert Arenas is taking better care of the ball (only 5 turnovers total the last two games), the defense allows a season high for points while the Thunder shoots 52.4 percent from three and 53 percent overall. Michael Lee delves into all this in his late-night postgame thoughts. The Wizards have to shake it off quickly because they have to play at San Antonio on Saturday. Mike Jones of The Washington Times was also on hand. We wonder if the headline writer had this little Garth Brooks ditty on the brain when piecing that together. Here's the recap from

Thunder 127, Wizards 108

Whose fault is it now? Who is going to have to take the brunt of the criticism for this 3-8 start? The Wizards had an easy target last season, placing the blame on their miserable start with a group of not-ready-for-prime-time players because Gilbert Arenas and Brendan Haywood, among others, were out with injuries. But on Friday night, the Wizards sent a veteran lineup, featuring their dream starting five of Arenas, Haywood, Antawn Jamison, Caron Butler and Mike Miller, on the court against the Oklahoma City Thunder and got completely outplayed and outworked. The young guys --- JaVale McGee, Nick Young and Dominic McGuire -- sat for all but the final minute of an embarrassing 127-108 loss. The Wizards never led at any point in the game and allowed three players on the Thunder to score 25 or more points, including Kevin Durant, the local kid who scored a

Wizards (3-7) at Thunder (6-6)

Wizards starters: Gilbert Arenas, Mike Miller, Caron Butler, Antawn Jamison, Brendan Haywood Thunder: Russell Westbrook, Thabo Sefolosha, Kevin Durant, Jeff Green, Nenad Krstic Line: Thunder by 4. The Wizards are 0-for-Oklahoma City. They've never won at Ford Center, losing to the Thunder, 88-83, last season and twice against the New Orleans Hornets, who spent two seasons in Oklahoma following Hurricane Katrina. And, I know it doesn't count, but they also lost a preseason game against the Los Angeles Lakers here in 2005 in which Eddie Jordan was ejected. Etan Thomas and Brendan Haywood certainly had their history together, but Haywood might want to give Thomas a hug for what he did this summer. Thomas was the only possible holdup on the Wizards' deal with Minnesota last June. By declaring that he wouldn't opt out of the final year of his contract, Thomas cleared the way for Mike Miller and Randy

Morning brew

Center Brendan Haywood is having a stellar season, which has been nearly overshadowed by the Wizards' slow start. Michael Lee writes about that -- and previews the game against Etan Thomas and the Oklahoma City Thunder -- for today's newspaper. On the blog, he recounts how DeShawn Stevenson got inside LeBron James's head on Wednesday night. Dan Steinberg examines Earl Boykins's role in the return of Agent Zero and Boykins's uncanny strength. Not to mention the fact that Gilbert tweeted last night. At the Washington Times, Mike Jones says the team hopes the win can serve as a building block to a turnaround. Bullets Forever's Mike Prada offers a final wrap-up of Wednesday's win over the Cavaliers. Truth About it reminds us: Don't call it a statement. Around the League ... The New York Times and Newsday are reporting that the Knicks have dropped their pursuit of Allen Iverson. Last

Gilbert Arenas is waiting for an audience. The enigmatic NBA point guard and former blogger extraordinaire finally signed up for Twitter, but he says he won't post anything on the social networking site until he has 1 million followers.

Wizards 108, Cavaliers 91

If one thing stood out from the game tonight, it was how important it is for the Washington Wizards to have all three of their all-stars on the court. Not one. Not two. But all three. The Wizards are not like Cleveland or Miami, teams that are fortunate to have one transcendent superstar to carry them over the course of 82 games. They need that trio to compete with the other big dogs in the NBA and this win served as a friendly reminder. Unfortunately, the Wizards have rarely been able to get those guys on the floor together, which explains why they've never won a playoff series since the so-called Big Three was formed. Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler have struggled with their shots all season, and it was no different on Wednesday night, as Arenas and Butler combined to shoot just 12 of 38. Any other night,

Cavaliers (8-3) at Wizards (2-7)

Wizards starters: Gilbert Arenas, Mike Miller, Caron Butler, Antawn Jamison, Brendan Haywood Cavaliers: Mo Williams, Anthony Parker, LeBron James, J.J. Hickson, Zydrunas Ilgauskas Line: Cavaliers by 4. What does it say about the Wizards that this is only the second time this calendar year that Brendan Haywood, Caron Butler, Gilbert Arenas and Antawn Jamison played a regular season game together? That foursome defeated the Cavaliers 109-101 on April 2. The Wizards have won the past two meetings between these two teams at Verizon Center. With Jamison making his season debut, Coach Flip Saunders said the vibe around the team is different entering this game. "I think the energy level's up," Saunders said. "There's no question, and it's a combination of when you play one of the best teams your energy level had better be up and against LeBron and those things. And then, too, I think any time you get

The Other Side: Cleveland Cavaliers

This is it. Unless they meet in the playoffs, this is the only time this season that Washington Wizards fans will be able to express their love and affection for LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. The last time Cleveland came to Washington, the Wizards snapped the Cavaliers' 13-game win streak as they fielded a team with Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison, Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood for the only time all season. I love you, too, D.C. (Photo by Fernando Medina/NBAE via Getty Images) There always seems to be good reason for the Wizards to be upset with the Cavaliers, but here is another: The Wizards' six-game losing streak began on Nov. 3 in Cleveland, when they blew an 18-point first half lead before Shaquille O'Neal knocked them over -- he clobbered DeShawn Stevenson and sent the rest of Washington's big men to the bench in foul trouble. The Cavaliers

Lebron James Comes To Washington: The Fact and The Fantasy

The Washington Wizards are set to "welcome" LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Verizon Center for their second meeting of the season. The outcome will not be as one-sided as the first, as Antawn Jamison makes his season debut against the Cavs.
With LeBron coming to town now, and his impending free agency next summer, it is difficult to overlook the potential impact on the Wizards.

 The Fact
James and the Cavaliers have had the Wizards' number in recent memory. In the playoffs, Cleveland with LeBron has won 12 of 16 against the Wizards. But in the regular season, the Cavs with LeBron are 11-11 against Washington.
Cleveland already owns a 12 point victory over Washington this season, but the score does little justice to how badly the Wizards played.
Good thing this isn't the playoffs.
In their first meeting of this season, the Wizards shot 39 percent from the field and 29 percent from beyond the arc. In comparison, the Cavaliers shot 41 percent from the field and 42 ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Washington Wizards, LeBron James, Cleveland Cavaliers, Antawn Jamison, Gilbert Arenas, Caron Butler

Washington Wizards Get Antawn Jamison Back; Winning To Follow?

In the long list of things missing from the Washington Wizards this season, Antawn Jamison is at the top. Come Wednesday, he will be scratched off that list.
Coach Flip Saunders said Jamison will make his season debut against the Cleveland Cavaliers in a must-win situation for the Wizards. It isn't a must-win because time is short on the season, but because the Wizards need something to end the six game skid they're on.
With his return imminent, it is impossible to overlook what the Wizards are getting with Jamison.
His career averages of 19.9 points and eight rebounds per game don't do justice to his tenure with the Wizards. Beyond his statistics, Jamison has been a leader for the Wizards through tough stretches. In the absence of Gilbert Arenas and Brendan Haywood, Jamison maintained his level of play and played a big part in what few wins the Wizards could manage.
There is some skepticism that comes with Jamison's return.
It isn't a foregone conclusion that he will see a heavy load of ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Washington Wizards, Antawn Jamison, Brendan Haywood, Gilbert Arenas

Getting closer to actually playing a basketball game this week, not to mention getting closer to seeing Antawn Jamison in uniform again. Michael Lee writes that Antawn Jamison practiced with the Wizards Monday, though he didn't speak with reporters. Here's how Mike Jones of The Washington Times saw it, again without comment from Jamison. Mike Prada of Bullets Forever delves a little deeper into Gilbert Arenas's identity crisis. Also via Bullets Forever, Hoops Addict did a Q&A; with Grant Hill, which included his thoughts on Arenas's comeback from injury. The Cavaliers will come to Verizon Center having played Tuesday night at home against the Warriors, and Shaquille O'Neal is expected to be out for that one. Around the League... Only three games on the schedule, but plenty of action off the court. Allen Iverson and the Memphis Grizzlies parted ways. God chose Memphis for Iverson. The Grizzlies chose to dump

Happy Monday, everyone. In The Post, Michael Lee delves into Gilbert Arenas's identity crisis with respect to the offense. We're all aware Agent Zero is back, for now. That much we've figured out. Mike Jones of the Washington Times also covers the latest Gilbert persona change. His colleague, Tom Knott, gets Cavaliers week (okay, not quite the ring of Cowboys week, but humor us for a second) started with a column on LeBron James putting a self-imposed stop to the free agency talk. Bullets Forever's Mike Prada takes a final look at Saturday's loss to the Pistons and says the little things made the difference. Around the League ... Pretty quiet night in terms of games. In Los Angeles, former Laker Trevor Ariza received his championship ring and his Rockets got a win. Staples Center fans were not happy with the Lakers' performance, according to the Los Angeles Times' Helene

Washington Wizards Holding Out For a Hero, Or a Miracle

After starting the season 2-1, the Washington Wizards have lost six straight games. To make matters worse, several players are already battling injuries, making the absence of Antawn Jamison that much more devastating.
Despite all the hard work the Wizards put in over the offseason, their tendency towards frailty haunts them.
With Jamison's return pending, the Wizards have had to turn to Andray Blatche to fill the void. Though Blatche has performed admirably, he doesn't hold a candle to Jamison in any phase of the game.
Especially leadership.
If there is one thing that is apparent, it is that the Wizards are lost without Jamison. Not only does he give them 20 points and 10 rebounds a game, but he is the heart and soul of the team.
Jamison is the conduit through which the success of the Wizards flows. He also has a hand in keeping Gilbert Arenas in check on the floor. It is apparent that Arenas is not the same player he was prior to his injury, but perhaps it is a mere consequence of ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Washington Wizards, Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison, Flip Saunders

Butler optimistic that things will turn around

The Wizards have numerous problems in the early part of the season, but in order to turn things around, the team will need more than just Antawn Jamison, Mike Miller and Randy Foye to come back healthy. They will also have to find some way for Caron Butler to find his comfort zone in Flip Saunders's new offense. I've already written about Butler's struggles to get on the same page with Gilbert Arenas, who has the ball the majority of the time on offense and appears to be focused on scoring and getting assists, not necessarily running the whole team. Since Butler gets a lot of his scoring off the dribble, that limits Arenas's assists totals -- especially since Butler is shooting just 39.3 percent from the floor. But there appear to be times when Arenas looks off Butler. In turn, Butler sometimes forces the action when he touches the

Michael Lee reports on the Wizards' point guard shortage for today's newspaper and introduces us to Earl Boykins. Here's the Washington Times's Mike Jones take on the Boykins signing. The DC Sport Bog gets into numerology and says the Wizards have made height historyagain. Here's more on Tuesday's game from Bullets Forever's JakeTheSnake and Mike Prada. Also, Prada was profiled in Washingtonian. Truth About It offers Gilbert's seven third quarter turnovers, in pictures and words. Dime says the Wizards need to man up. And NBC Washington's Web site -- well, this headline says it all: Same Ol' Crappy Wizards. Elsewhere in the league: Old Superman's team beat new Superman's team last night. After the game, the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Brian Windhorst offered his thoughts on the team's long view. And LeBron James claimed that he would not talk about free agency any more this season. Here's Adrian Wojnarowski's take on

When training camp began, the concern was what the Wizards were going to do with so many guards. They had a logjam and the battle for minutes was going to be so intense, blah blah blah. I guess we should've known that those problems would be handled the Wizards Way -- through some unfortunate injuries. First, Javaris Crittenton went down, then Mike Miller, then Mike James, then Randy Foye, leaving the Wizards with just Gilbert Arenas, DeShawn Stevenson and Nick Young to play in the backcourt. And with the way Young has been playing lately, that really left them with just Arenas and Stevenson. With Crittenton, James and Foye sidelined, the Wizards really had to look for some options at point guard --- especially since there is absolutely no need to wear down Arenas this early in the season. Arenas has played more minutes than anyone else on the Wizards

Wizards (2-5) at Heat (5-1); Arenas Out

Wizards starters: Randy Foye, DeShawn Stevenson Caron Butler, Andray Blatche, Brendan Haywood Heat: Mario Chalmers, Dwyane Wade, Quentin Richardson, Michael Beasley, Jermaine O'Neal Line: Heat by 9 ½ That was fast. Gilbert Arenas said his goal was to play 82 games this season -- and that is not going to happen. Arenas will miss his first game of season because of a strained left calf muscle. The announcement was made just an hour before tipoff. Arenas worked out with teammates before the game, shooting jumpers while wearing some protective tights. Tim Grover, the famed trainer who worked closely with Arenas all summer, flew in last night and monitored Arenas's movements. DeShawn Stevenson, who will start in the backcourt in Arenas's stead, noticed Arenas's get up before the game and said, "You the man in black, huh? Black shoes, black shorts. . ." "Black drawls. Black tights," Arenas joked back. A

Haywood left off all-star ballot

Maybe you're 13th best. (Photo by Ned Dishman/NBAE via Getty Images) The NBA released its ballot for the 2010 All-Star Game on Tuesday and Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler represent the Washington Wizards. But chosen by a panel of six scribes who selected the 120 names, Brendan Haywood isn't one of the 12 best centers in the Eastern Conference. Really? The list of 12 Eastern Conference centers is Dwight Howard, Shaquille O'Neal, Andrea Bargnani, Andrew Bogut, Tyson Chandler, Al Horford, Brook Lopez, Jermaine O'Neal, Kendrick Perkins, Samuel Dalembert, Brad Miller and Rasheed Wallace. Howard will probably get the nod after getting the most votes last season, but O'Neal will give him a strong push. Everybody else is playing for a distant third. Why not Haywood? I know Haywood missed 76 games last season and he has no chance of ever getting voted to an all-star team. Haywood was

The Other Side: Miami Heat

It's me again. (Photo by Ned Dishman/NBAE via Getty Images) The Miami Heat and Washington Wizards will play the second of three games this month. Dwyane Wade scored a season-high 40 points, and made the go-ahead jumper, to lead the Heat to a 93-89 win last week at Verizon Center. Gilbert Arenas also had a season-high-tying 32 points, but needed 27 shots, and couldn't deliver in the final 25 seconds. The Heat (5-1) is first in the Southeast Division and hasn't played since defeating the Denver Nuggets, 96-88, last Friday. 1. The Heat has seen improved production for the bench, with the surprising move to make Udonis Haslem a reserve. Haslem is averaging a double-double (11.8 points and 10 rebounds). 2. Michael Beasley's Afro is getting a lot of attention in Miami. But he is also looking to do a better job of rebounding. He's had 11 in the

It's game day for the Wizards, and they'll be looking to avoid their fifth straight loss in Miami against the Heat. Last time they lost five in a row? March, when they had their seventh and final losing streak of at least five games of the 2008-09 season. Michael Lee mentions this in his preview story, which primarily focuses on the offensive struggles of players like Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler. In other news, Mike James is out for a few weeks with a broken finger. Mike Prada of Bullets Forever comprehensively dissects this piece from Ken Berger's blog on CBSSports.com The Washington Times reports that the Wizards are among the best bargains in professional sports. So hey, the team has that going for it right now. The Miami Herald writes about the Heat's suddenly fortified bench, and the Herald's Heat blog reveals Michael Beasley's Afro. Etan Thomas writes a
