Gasol expected to play for Lakers vs. Bulls

Kobe Bryant took it upon himself to help lift the Los Angeles Lakers out of their offensive funk in their latest game, scoring 40 for the 100th time in his storied career.

The return of Pau Gasol should make Los Angeles even more formidable.

Gasol is expected to make his season debut Thursday night as the Lakers continue their five-game homestand against the Chicago Bulls, who opened their lengthy circus road trip with an impressive win.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Los Angeles Lakers, Pau Gasol, Chicago Bulls, Kobe Bryant

Kobe Drains 40 For 100th Time In Career

Kobe Bryant has been labelled the best player in the world by millions of fans around the world.
Kobe Bryant hit 17-of-29 shots and a three-pointer for 40 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals in Tuesday's win over the Pistons. This brought him to 40 points 100 times in his career. (For those of you who aren't good at math, that is a lot.)
This is just an amazing record to me. To be able to score 40 points 100 times! That is just astonishing.
I'm sure every single one of you know about his 81 point game, the second most points in a game ever. Next to Wilt's 101 point game.
My question is, is he too old to reach at least 175 games with 40 points. I think he can easily get to 150, but is 175 out of reach?
Kobe is the most clutch player in the NBA, no doubt. He can score at will, and drive to the hoop and hit an almost impossible shot. Kobe is not human. He is just so good.
Kobe reaching 40 points in a total of 100 games is an amazing stat that probably will not be touched for ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Kobe Bryant, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Adam Morrison, Los Angeles Lakers, Andrew Bynum, Phil Jackson

Pivot Points: 10 Undeniable Truths So Far This Season

The start of this NBA season has been more than any reasonable fan could have ever expected.

Although we are only an eightth of the way through circumstances have touched the whole range of human emotions.

We have been surprised, disappointed, exhilirated, confused, angry, and heart-broken, and many of those emotions may have occurred during the course of one game.

Allen Iverson may have scored his final points, Brandon Jennings has announced his arrival, and Jameer Nelson is lost again.

We have seen some of the best basketball played and we have been witness to some of the worst.

We have gasped at herculean feats and been slain by our own exaggerated expectations. There has been enough news and speculation to fill a whole season, yet the 20 game mark has not been breached.

What else could possibly be in store for the rest of the year? I don't have an answer, but I can tell you what has transpired so far.

There are some things that are as certain as death and taxes, and Pivot Points is here to ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Los Angeles Lakers, Kobe Bryant, Andrew Bynum

L.A. Lakers' Pivot Points: Five Potholes On The Road To A Repeat, Part 3

If the Los Angeles Lakers can manage to escape San Antonio and Denver, who I see as their biggest challenges in the West, their journey will lead them to the NBA Finals where they will face one of three potential opponents from the Eastern Conference.
The first of these teams is Cleveland, which is probably the best match-up for the defending champions. The Lakers hold all of the primary advantages over the Cavaliers, save one. But that one just happens to be LeBron James.
James has jumped to the forefront of conversation when discussing the best players in the league. Outside of Los Angeles he probably gets the nod over Kobe Bryant.
His attributes are numerous and he has steadily improved in most aspects of his game. His man defense is less than stellar, but he makes up for it by being one of the best help defenders in the NBA.
There will be no way for the Lakers to shut him down, but the acquisition of Ron Artest means that Kobe won't have to exert as much energy trying to defend James.

Pivot Points: Lakers, Celtics Facing Questions in Wake of Two Game Skids

For two teams that are supposed to be the NBA favorites, the past two games have left the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers looking pretty ordinary.
In Boston the home loss to the Atlanta Hawks can be pretty much summed up by a lack of rebounding on both ends. The younger, more athletic Hawks just beat up the Celtics on the boards.
The mystery lies in this question, how do the long, experienced Celtics allow themselves to be out rebounded on their home floor? Good thing they didn't have to search long to find the answer.
It basically boiled down to a lack of attention to basic fundamentals, namely blocking out opponents when the ball was in the air. Coach Doc Rivers basically said as much as he watched his players continuously beaten to the ball by the quicker Hawks.
Although Boston had a discernible height advantage the obvious difference in athleticism was staggering. It could have been nullified by fundamentals, but the Celtics often found themselves reacting to the Hawks instead of ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol

                    Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- Aaron Brooks scored a career-high 33 points, including five 3-pointers, and the Houston Rockets beat the Los Angeles Lakers 101-91 on Sunday night, sending them to a second consecutive loss.
The NBA champion Lakers were coming off a 105-79 drubbing at Denver two nights earlier only to have another team they vanquished in last season's title run show them up at home, where they got booed.
Aussie David Andersen added a career-high 19 for the Rockets, who lost 103-102 at home in overtime in the teams' first meeting earlier this month.
Bryant scored 41 points in that game, but he had just 18 Sunday. Ron Artest, who went to Los Angeles around the time Trevor Ariza went to Houston in July, added 22 points. Andrew Bynum had 21 points and 11 rebounds.
The Lakers got a combined 12 points out of starters Lamar Odom and Derek Fisher.
Ariza received his NBA championship ring from Bryant and Fisher before the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers, Kobe Bryant

They are not the New York Knicks and haven't been for a long time. The idea that the Garden is still some kind of mecca for pro basketball - why, because Kobe and LeBron each show up for a concert event every year? - is just another romantic New York sports myth.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, New York Knicks, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James

Pivot Points: How Bad Was the LA Lakers' Loss to Denver? Ask Johan Petro

To say the Los Angeles Lakers lost to the Denver Nuggets on Friday night would not be doing justice to the word lost. I can think of a few better words like, battered, bruised, demolished, annihilated...take your pick from any of these.
How bad was it? Denver reserve, Johan Petro made his grand entrance with six minutes left in the fourth quarter, and the significance in this is that Petro is a more athletic version of Laker reserve Adam Morrison.
His substitution for Carmelo Anthony mid-way through the fourth quarter meant that either the Nuggets were getting blown out or that they had put the game out of reach, and in this case it happened to be the latter.
It's not like the french-born Petro is a horrible player; it's just that much like Morrison, he has been unable to realize his potential. His extended play highlighted several things for the defending champion Lakers and none of them were positive.

Top 5 Current Signature Moves in the NBA

In this day and age everything is expanding.

Apple Inc. will not stop creating new portable music devices and laptops, and snack companies are finding new ways to reduce calories from our dearly beloved potato chips.

Depending on how you look at it, change can either be good or bad.

This logic can be applied to the NBA.

Keeping things traditional seems to rock the boat steady, but spicing things help once in a while doesn't hurt too.

One of the ways in which the NBA has changed is the way players play the game. They understand the fundamentals of the game, but add their own twist to help give it some flavour.

With each player represented by one signature move, it is hard not to go all sparkly eyes whenever it is displayed.

Any who, here are the current top five signature moves in the NBA.
Cold-Blooded: 10 NBA Players With Ice-Water In Their Veins

With the shot-clock winding down and the sound of the crowd pulsating in your ears, these are the type of players whose hands you want the ball in.

They operate as if the crowd ceases to exist and the only sound they hear is the steady beat of the ball off the hardwood.

Going through their motions with controlled energy, they silently size you up before going in for the kill.

The snap of the net as the ball passes through it is more an expectation than a consequence and they drift back down the court poised to strike again.

These are the players with ice-water running through their veins, and to borrow a phrase they are cooler than the other side of the pillow.

Nothing frazzles them as they carve you up with the precision of a surgeon. They thrive off of energy, whether it's positive or negative, and if it's the latter, be prepared for their supreme concentration.

There is nothing that pleases them more than to hear the air go out of an arena after they have hit you with a cold-blooded move, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Los Angeles Lakers, Kobe Bryant

Start Spreading the News: Kobe, Not Lebron, Could Be a Knick Next Year

With all the talk of LeBron James leaving the Cavs next season, little attention has been paid to the other free agency saga going on between Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers.
While the Laker have offered Bryant the maximum money possible (a three-year extension worth $86 to $91 million), Bryant has yet to sign on the dotted line. He's currently under contract until July 2011, but can opt out after this season and leave the Lakers with a glaring hole at shooting guard and an even bigger hole in the hearts of Laker fans everywhere.
I know what a lot of you are thinking: Why would he do that? How could Bryant turn his back on a team this good? On a team that he just won a title with? That stood by him during his Colorado trial? That chose him over Shaq in the summer of 2004? That could easily pay him more money than any other team in the NBA?
The answer is not a simple one, but true Laker fans and followers of Bryant's career know deep down that anything is possible when it comes to ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers, LeBron James, New York Knicks

Best in League: CP3's Shooting Too Good To Ignore

Welcome to the first of many Best in League rankings. This will give us an opportunity to discuss not who the MVP is, but who is playing the best basketball in the NBA.

Too often players are left out of MVP consideration becaus tof the poor play of their teammates. In recent years it's been almost a requisite that the MVP also be on one of the best three teams.

That doesn't make a whole lot of sense because those teams are generally deep and would in most cases be OK without that player. On the other hand guys like Chris Paul and Dwayne Wade (until last year) carry the entire load on their shoulders and are somehow punished for that in the voting.

Kobe led the Washington Generals to the playoffs while scoring 57 points per game and lost to small, defensively challenged caveman playing on a stacked team. In what world does that make sense?

Anyway, these are the guys who are playing the most exceptionally.

Apologies to

Fg%- Carmelo, Wade, Martin

In The Clutch: The Top Five NBA Players You Want Taking Your Teams' Last Second Shot

Everyone team wishes they could have a guy like LeBron to make them a last second shot in a close game but most of the teams in the NBA do not have this pleasure.

In the Bulls-Nuggets game last night the score was 90-89 with 0.3 on the clock the Bulls having the ball. I was amazed to see that the man they had taking their last second shot was none other than Brad Miller.Yes I said it not John Salmons, Kirk Hinrich or Derrick Rose but Brad Miller. Miller gets the ball passed to him from Hinrich and when he starts his shot there is 0.1 on the clock at least how I saw it and the ball drops in the basket. The refs decide that he started the shot after the clock had buzzed and that the Bulls had lost the game.

The fact that Brad Miller, a center/power forward took a last second shot to try and win a game for his team brought me to thinking about The Top Five Last Second Shooters In The NBA Today.
Enough With 2010 Already

What do you say we hold off on all of this 2010 offseason free agency coverage until, let's say...seven months from now. You know, during the 2010 offseason?
Yes, it makes for interesting barber-shop discussion (this I know first hand) where your favorite 2010 free agent might end up for the 2011 season, but the discussion surrounding that is beginning to dwarf the 2010 season. Before we can talk heavily about where LeBron James will be playing after the 2010 season, we should let the 2010 season take place. That's the natural way of things.
Many fans are tired of it, the players are definitely tired of it, but like the prolonged Brett Favre saga, ESPN loves to talk about it.
Some of the discussion doesn't even make sense.
During a game on ESPN recently, a graphic showed the long list of free agents in the offseason, and Jeff Van Gundy, who I normally have no issue with, pointed out that Lakers guard Kobe Bryant is on that list.
Kobe is in his 14th season in the NBA, all of them with the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, New York Knicks, ESPN, Los Angeles Lakers

Pivot Points: Should the Kobe and LeBron Debate Include Dwyane Wade?

Silly me. I recently penned an article that questioned the debate between Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, and in my haste, I may have committed a grave error. Well, they say hindsight is 20/20, and now I'm back to set the record straight.
Miami guard Dwyane Wade has every right to be included in the discussion, and it could be argued that at this point in his career the debate should have included only him and Bryant.
Wade sometimes gets lost in the conversation for a number of reasons including the fact that he was not nearly as heralded coming into the NBA, and his team usually remains on the fringe of the playoffs but is not considered a serious contender.
Wade was a great player coming out of Marquette University but no one could have foreseen the talent he was to become. I thought that he would be a great player but I never imagined he would hold court with NBA royalty.
The truth of the matter is Wade is a much more accomplished player than he is given credit for and the fact that he has ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Dwyane Wade, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James
