Phoenix Suns Breakdown: No Defensive Heat

43 points given up in the fourth quarter of a 117-109 home loss to the New Jersey Nets? Amare Stoudemire disqualifying himself with two technical fouls? Shaquille O’Neal almost complete uninvolved in the offense? Nash, Stoudemire, and Shaq providing no defensive resistance? Sorry, but the Suns don’t have the defense to win, and unlike in years past, they don’t have the offense to make up for it. Offense For the most part, Phoenix’ offense is dangerous and effective, but it isn’t as prolific as the run (and gun) you out of the building offense Mike D’Antoni employed in his tenure as head coach. As always, it starts with Steve Nash. For someone who has the ball as much as Nash has, it’s remarkable that he only forced a pair of shots and a couple of passes when he penetrated to deep and couldn’t find a passing angle to a cutting big. With New Jersey focused on making Nash a scorer in the halfcourt, they went under the majority of screens where ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Phoenix Suns, Miami Heat, Amare Stoudemire, New Jersey Nets, Shaquille O'Neal

Stephon Marbury Heading to Miami Heat

Stephon Marbury heading to Miami Heat? The World Famous LayupDrill Rumor Mill 12/1/2008
Back to business on a Monday Morning at the Rumor Mill.
It's the first of the month, which means I have to start with a Stephon Marbury update . We have followed the Marbury/Knicks saga over the last month, and it seems that we may see an end soon.
Miami has made it known that they are shopping swingman Shawn Marion, who of course, thrived in the Mike D’Antoni Phoenix Suns system. The Heat could use a veteran point guard, like Steph, to play aside Dwayne Wade, and help out rookie Mario Chalmers in crunch time.
The NY Post reports NBA Players Association attorney Hal Biagas has reached out to teams to see their interest in Marbury. The Miami Heat are said to be the top priority. Marbury, Knicks Management, and The Players Association will all be getting together early this week to agree on a buyout and put the final touches on his days as a Knick.
The Post also reports that Marbury blasted ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Miami Heat, Stephon Marbury, New York Knicks, Quentin Richardson

Phoenix Suns Need Kevin Martin

The Phoenix Suns still have one huge weakness they need to address before they can be considered legitimate championship contenders.
And no, it's not defense.
The Suns suffer from having too many cold streaks offensively in which they can't get anything going. After watching a disgusting game in which the Miami Heat decimated the Suns, it was clear that when Nash goes off the court, Phoenix is utterly bamboozled as to what they should do.
Even when he is there, the Suns have looked a bit shaky. Shaq is the No. 1 option for the Suns, but he can only dominate in stretches. Amare Stoudemire isn't showing the same passion that he did last year, and his offensive production has dropped considerably. Leandro Barbosa was the only guy who could get his own shot off.
Enter Kevin Martin.
Martin is the efficient scorer Phoenix needs to be successful. He scores a lot but doesn't shoot much; he is a very disciplined player. His range could also free up Nash's drives and Shaq's post play.
Every good ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Phoenix Suns, Kevin Martin, Shaquille O'Neal, Steve Nash, Miami Heat

Mario Chalmers' Scorching Defense Keeps Miami Heat's Future Bright

I caught the Phoenix-Miami game last night for the sole reason of seeing Shaq play against his former team, the Heat, for the first time. By the end of the game, the most surprising aspect was not Wade exploding for 43 points, or the Nash-less Suns committing 19 turnovers, but instead what caught my eyes was the spectacular play of Mario Chalmers.
While his stats may not blow anyone away, he proved to me last night that he has all the makings of an elite player.
As a fantasy basketball player, I was aware of his nine-steal game earlier this year, but I figured it was just a fluke and let some other poor sap in my league waste a roster spot on him. But that was before I had seen him play. That was before I understood just exactly what kind of player Chalmers is.
After watching last night’s game, Chalmers could get 20 steals and it wouldn’t surprise me at all— he is everywhere on the court. He harasses point guards as they bring the ball up the court and has the most ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Miami Heat, Mario Chalmers

Dwyane Wade: The New Superman of South Beach?

Sure we all know of Dwyane Wade's nickname, "Flash," but I have to say, after the first 16 games of the season, he is looking more like another superhero.
Let's evaluate. Flash was fast, sure, but was he one of the elite superheroes of the Justice League just as Dwyane Wade is one of the elite superstars of the NBA? The answer is no.
While he was fast, he had no other attributes that really caught people's eye. Therefore, Dwyane Wade couldn't possibly be "Flash." Wade is not only a scorer, but a versatile monster as well.
Along with leading the league in scoring at 28.4 points per game, Wade also is among the league's top 11 in blocks per game (1.7), top three in steals per game (2.44), top seven in assists per game (7.4) and top nine among guards in rebounds per game (4.8)!
Now after analyzing the beckoning question at hand, I ask you, "Which superhero would you compare Dwyane Wade to? Sorry, Shaq, but only one would do Wade justice...Superman.
Is there a new Superman of South Beach? ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Dwyane Wade, Shaquille O'Neal, Miami Heat

Phoenix Suns Exposed Again Without Steve Nash

The Phoenix Suns were exposed as a mediocre team without Steve Nash once again.
Playing without their two-time MVP, the Phoenix Suns proved that they cannot when he doesn't play. Nash, who dressed for the game against Miami, decided before tip-off that he couldn't go because of a bruised thigh.
The suns, who have been plagued by turnovers all season, played poorly for most of the night. They seemed like a team that was searching for direction without number 13. Whenever Phoenix got close, they would turn the ball over and lose momentum.
Shaquille O'neal and Amare Stoudemire were held in check for most of the night by a smothering Miami Heat defense. The guards were unable to feed Shaq or have any flow on offense. O'neal finished with 12 points and nine rebounds while Stoudemire had 14 and six.
Leandro Barbosa tried to help with 20 points off the bench, but to no avail. The final score was 107-92 in favor of the Heat.
So, after all the coaching and personnel changes in the last couple of ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Phoenix Suns, Steve Nash, Miami Heat, Shaquille O'Neal, Amare Stoudemire, Steve Kerr

Shawn Marion was a fan favorite in Phoenix for many years, a stalwart of the run-and-gun Suns teams that were perennial playoff contenders. But his return to Phoenix will be overshadowed by a 7-foot-1 guy who, well, overshadows just about everything. When Marion and the Miami Heat visit the Suns on Friday night, it'll be the first time Shaquille O'Neal sees the Heat since the trade that brought...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Phoenix Suns, Miami Heat, Shaquille O'Neal, Shawn Marion

Nicolas Batum and the Portland Trailblazers Roll over the Miami He

The Portland fans were on pins and needles.
The fading S acramento Kings had given the Blazers everything they could handle just two nights before. Now Dwayne Wade and the much better Miami Heat were in town.
Sure, Portland pulled off the win in Miami, but it was a close game. Just a break or two going the Heat's way and it would have been a different result. That was easily a game the Blazers could have lost.
They were having none of that on this night. They started out with a quick 8-0 run. Moments later Heat coach Erik Spoelstra had to call a second time-out with the score 19-4. In past years the Blazers would allow the other team back into games like this.
In this one, it started to look that way. After building a lead in the low 20's, Portland saw the Heat creep back to within 13 at 46-33. It was at that point coach Nate McMillan made an interesting choice. He inserted Nicolas Batum to defend Dwayne Wade.
Typically Batum has played the Ervin Johnson role.
Portland Trail Blazers Game 16: The Miami Heat got BEAT

Poor Dwayne Wade. I like his game so much ...but...
He plays for one of the worst championship teams ever .
After his squad took out Dallas in 2006, it's been all downhill. It's like watching some Hollywood teen idol have a big hit, and the next thing you know you don't hear about them until they're 40 years old coming out of rehab!
I understand in football, or baseball, or any other sport...but in the NBA...for a championship team to fall that far from the crown...it's just sad.
That was a great team , too! The veterans mixed with Wade...they just rode the wave.
How could it happen they fall so low?
I surmise that when Miami upset Dallas, their stars Shaq, Zo, Wade, and even Payton hit the Miami clubs pretty darn hard . They got so hooked on those late night parties, that when they were supposed to go and get ready for the season, I'll wager they had a little anxiety over losing those late night parties.
So ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Miami Heat, Portland Blazers, Dallas Mavericks

Heat forward Dorell Wright was expected to miss at least three weeks after having surgery Tuesday to remove debris from his left knee.

Wright has played only one game for Miami since he tore his left meniscus on March 2 and had surgery the following day. He has battled pain and swelling in the knee since the Heat opened camp in late September.

Wright was expected to be able to resume on-court training in three weeks.

The fifth-year player has appeared in 134 games for the Heat, averaging 6.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Miami Heat, Dorell Wright

Michael Beasley' Must Balance Talent With Maturity

The Miami Heat fell to 7-7 after a disappointing loss to the Houston Rockets on Monday night.
Thus far, Michael Beasley has averaged 14.8 ppg while pulling down 5.5 rpg. He has looked sharp at times and lackluster at others.
No doubt about it; he's not lacking in the talent department. However, as talented as he may be, his maturity needs to take a huge leap forward. Sure, he's only 19, but we can all agree he's no ordinary teenager.
Beasley can put the ball on the floor with the best of them, he can drain the three and shoots 80% from the strike. He puts up great individual statistics for a 19-year-old rookie, but collectively, the Heat will need more. Defensively, Beasley needs to box out more aggressively and fight harder for rebounds. He seems to take them as they come instead of making the paint his house.
Michael shows that on offense he is a force to be reckoned with, however, at times he lets his impatience get the best of him. He may go 2-3 ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Michael Beasley, Miami Heat, Houston Rockets

NBA's Top Franchise Players

There are many players in the National Basketball Association that teams would love to have on their roster to lead their team to victory. These players are not always the best scorers, passers, or rebounders, but they are players that can work with the team to make everyone around them better. Many of them lead their team to the playoffs nearly every year without much support around them. Here are my picks for this elite group of players.
I will start off with one of the most obvious picks, LeBron James . He has led a Cavaliers team to the playoffs the last three years without much support. The team has brought in many players to support Lebron as he tries to win a championship for Cleveland, but none of them have been much help to him as teams continue to focus almost all of the attention on him. I pick him as he has continued to show he can dominate the league as a scorer, and also can contribute to rebounding. His ability to pass and create open shots for his teammates is one of the biggest ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, LeBron James, Cleveland Cavaliers, New Orleans Hornets, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade, Miami Heat

NBA Fantasy Player of the Week: Dwyane Wade

Every week there is a player that outplays everybody in his path. A player that dominates in every statistical category, and takes total control of every game that they play in. This weeks NBA Fantasy Player of the Week is Dwyane Wade.
Over Wade's last four games, he has averaged 31.5 points, 9.25 assists, 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals, 3.0 blocks, while shooting 48.8 percent from the floor. To add to that, Wade also has four three-pointers made over that span, and clearly looks like he has stepped up his shooting game from behind the arc.
Wade’s name is definitely being heard amongst MVP talk and it looks like he could be a top candidate in the race for Most Valuable Player.

 Fantasy Standpoint
Wade is ranked second in the entire league, according to Yahoo! Fantasy NBA. CBS Sportsline Fantasy NBA ranks Wade third in Fantasy points per game amongst the entire league. Wade should be owned and started in every league.
