Does Steve Nash Really Qualify As a Top 10 Floor General?

Hadarii Jones loves to pick interesting topics to write about. His most recent article was a slide show titled " Born to Lead the top 10 Floor Generals in the NBA " which I was intrigued to read. His list in order went Jeff Green, Gilbert Arenas, Kevin Garnett, Dwayne Wade, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Steve Nash, Kobe Bryant, Jason Kidd, and Chauncey Billups. To me the weakest link out of the group was Nash. I don't consider Nash a top 10 floor general. He maybe an exceptional passer and shooter, but to me in order to be a floor general you have to be a complete all-around player. On the list, every single player except for Nash plays defense. Certainly not all of them on the same level, but it's good enough to be considered above average. That can hardly be said about Nash. Let's look at the players that Jones has on the list. For anyone that ever questioned the value of Pau Gasol, the play of the Los Angeles Lakers is making the answer painfully obvious. In his absence, the team has suffered mightily on both ends of the floor. Their latest display against the Houston Rockets highlighted their various post troubles, and made his return paramount to returning to their oiled-machine-like ways. That's not to say that center Andrew Bynum hasn't performed admirably in his absence, but the team's play in the paint has lacked the fluidity that Gasol provides. Although Bynum has risen to the challenge by averaging more than 20 points and 10 rebounds per game, the Lakers are in need of Gasol's knowledge of the triangle offense and superior instincts on defense. While Bynum did have a game-high 17 rebounds against the Rockets, the Lakers were still out-rebounded by the much smaller Houston team. L.A. was one of the best rebounding teams in the league with Gasol. They are average without him. It's not like Pau is a banger ...

We knew that probable issues existed, but we chose to ignore them. We sat blinded in the purple-and-gold glow of last year's championship, while very serious concerns receded to the depths of our minds. Last night, the Dallas Mavericks induced a crushing return to reality, in a blowout that wasn't as close as the final score indicated, and that had the Lakers within 14 points. Los Angeles was atrocious on both sides of the ball, as the offense couldn't find any kind of rhythm, and the defense looked flat-footed and slow. In today's NBA, several European players have made a name for themselves. German-born Dirk Nowitzki, Spaniard Pau Gasol, and Turkey's Hedo Turkoglu are just a few examples. Sure, Europeans are enjoying some major success in the league now, but it hasn't always been like that. Until the 1980s, seeing a European player in the NBA was basically unheard of. In the 1981 draft, the Portland Trail Blazers selected Iceland native Petur Gudmundsson with the 61st overall pick. The former University of Washington star appeared in 68 games for the Blazers in 1981-82 posting averages of 3.2 points and 2.7 rebounds per contest. Although Gudmundsson didn't exactly put up eye-popping numbers, he still had made history by becoming the first ever European to play in the league. A guy by the name of Georgi Glouchkov was the first player from an Eastern bloc country. Regardless of the outcome of this game, everybody knew that tonight was going to be a good night for Los Angeles. The banner was raised, the crowd cheered and everybody on the Laker's squad received a shiny new championship ring. Everybody, except one. Ron Artest had to watch from the locker room as he wasn't a part of the team that won the championship but he's on the team that will be defending it. Artest had a rough game bringing in 10 points, five rebounds, and four assists on 30 percent shooting while taking half of his 10 shots from the three-point-line. Should I add that he also had four turnovers? Yes, he didn't have his best performance out there on his first official night as a Laker but it sure wasn't from a lack of effort. He ran the lanes, and he defended his man but he just wasn't hitting his shots. It's a little hard to find a rhythm when your taking half of your shots from beyond the arc and yet it didn't stop him from trying. It looks as though Artest is still trying ...

One is a quickening of tempo, and the other means to slow it down, and for the Los Angeles Lakers, they represent the double-edge sword that other teams will be forced to defend this year. The addition of Ron Artest gives Laker coach Phil Jackson the versatility to play two distinct styles, which is something that was missing from the Lakers' arsenal last year. They were much better suited to an up-tempo game in 2009, and when the pace slowed down, the ball usually ended up stuck in Kobe Bryant's hands.
