The ultimate test for our point guards is Tony Parker. The guy kills us. Last year, in 4 games against Portland he had almost 24 points and eight assists per game. Portland had absolutely no answer for him with Steve Blake and Sergio Rodriguez. Andre Miller has fared well against the Spurs offensively; let's hope he can get hot. Either way, Parker wins. George Hill, his backup, is a good young player and certainly doesn't hurt San Antonio.

Despite early struggles against the Spurs, Brandon Roy was very good against them in '08-'09. Michael Finley has lost a step but his ability to hit jumpers is still there. Manu Ginobili is a big x-factor here. If he plays an active game he'll disrupt Portland's game plan. Regardless, I like our chances in this game. Rudy will spread it out and hit some threes.

Portland Blazers to Wear Rip City Jersey Tomorrow Night!

Here's the release from the team:
COMMEMORATIVE JERSEYS PAY NOD TO FOUR DECADES OF SUPPORT
Trail Blazers to make first of two regular-season appearances in "Rip City" gear
Portland, Ore. - Tomorrow night, in front of a sold out crowd and a national television audience, the Portland Trail Blazers will wear commemorative "Rip City" jerseys, paying homage to the enduring 40-year bond between the team and its fans.
The jersey, designed in conjunction with the team's 40th anniversary season, unofficially debuted during the October 14 preseason game vs. Phoenix. It will be worn twice during the regular season—Friday night vs. San Antonio and on Fan Appreciation Night, April 14 vs. Golden State.
"Since the day that Bill Schonely first uttered the words in 1971, ‘Rip City' has become synonymous with Portland and Blazermania," Chief Marketing Officer Sarah Mensah said. "These jerseys were our way of using the 40th anniversary platform to celebrate and recognize the role our fans have played in ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Portland Blazers

NBA Primetime: Slow Starts, Quick Recovery

Five games into the beautiful 2009 NBA season and already teams are starting to show their true colors.
Organizations like New Jersey (0-5), Milwaukee (1-2), Minnesota (1-4), and Sacramento (1-4) were obviously not expected to turn heads this season and thus far neither team has disappointed in that regard.
Aside from the low-tier teams in the league, a few squads have started off on a slow note and have obvious potential to bounce back and recover throughout the next week or so.
NBA Primetime presents to you the "Slow Starts, Quick Recovery" teams of the NBA.
Utah Jazz - (1-3, .250 PCT) 4th in Northwest Division
After retaining Boozer from being dealt this offseason, the Jazz entered the year with high hopes and a well-assembled roster.
With three loses to Denver, Houston, and Dallas, the Jazz have started the season with a 1-3 overall record, averaging four points less on the offensive end than a year ago (99 PPG now, 103 PPG last season) while giving up five points more on the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Portland Blazers, Utah Jazz, Washington Wizards

Reeling Blazer Fans Wonder What's Happening with 2-3 Start

Going into the season, my hopes for this year's Blazer team were sky-high. Coming off a very fun 54-28 year, having upgraded the three weakest positions, and entering the fourth year for the heart and soul of the team to be together, I optimistically suggested 60+ wins, a Western Conference Finals or better appearance, and an opening month with a record as sparkling as 15-4.

Just a couple weeks later the team seems to be in disarray. They almost gave up a home game to the out-manned Rockets then did lose at home to not only the Nuggets but also to the Hawks.

This is not a shot at the Rockets, Nuggets, or Hawks. The Nuggets look to have a good shot at giving the Lakers a run for their money for best record in the conference based on their play without J.R. Smith. The Rockets have been playing unbelievably well. And the Hawks are one of my dark horse teams in the Eastern Conference with a roster somewhat similar to the Blazers.

But the plain and simple truth is I truly believed that ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Portland Blazers

Forever Young: Failing Rebuilding Teams Can Learn From The Blazers

A 118-90 loss to the Celtics spawned a potentially embarrassing season for the Bulls.
Last year, the Bulls looked like they were on the right track. They made the playoffs, won eight more games than the previous season, and they gave the Celtics a run for their money in a seven game thrill-a-minute series.
Looks like rebuilding could pay off for the Bulls...since they started rebuilding in 1998.
Chicago has a lot to look forward to. Second-year point guard Derrick Rose is great at getting to the hoop, and he shows occasional glimpses of great passing in traffic. He's the future superstar the Bulls were lacking when they won 49 games in 2007.
Rose leads an explosive offense, helped out by the smooth-scoring John Salmons and the talented Luol Deng. But there's a lot the Bulls need to do in order to get where they want to be.
First off, there's very little defensive intensity. Tyrus Thomas has the potential to make the all-defensive team, but too often he goes for the offensive board rather ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Portland Blazers, Brandon Roy, Chicago Bulls

Blazers Chemistry Review No. 1

Team success is dependent on zillions of variables, only some of which are controllable. We human types know this but prefer to boil things down to a single factor. Its easier on the noodle.
Last season Portland's single factor for success was the team's "ability to stay healthy." That was all well and good, but this is a new season. Worrying about injuries is so 2008. We want something new to fret about. The Blazers have given us one: team chemistry.
After a preseason loss (Professor?) Joe Freeman of the Oregonian issued the team an F in Chemistry . It was Freeman's chemistry-like the class! concept that is the inspiration for this feature.
We will grade Portland's chemistry with a little help from some of the greatest scientific minds/educators ever to exist. This feature will run until we can't take it anymore.
Get out your beakers and bunsen burners, or whatever the kids are using to do science these days. Lasers and crystals perhaps?

Portland Blazers 91, Atlanta Hawks 97: Blazers Fall Short with Poor Effort

  BOX SCORE
After so many thrilling, and ultimately positive endings to games against the Atlanta Hawks, Joe Johnson got revenge with a 97 to 91 victory over the Blazers in Portland tonight.
Confidence seems to be down, already two losses at home, and the team with such high expectations is really struggling to keep it together here early in the season.
Once again it's the same old story. In the second half the Hawks got more than their fair share of easy buckets thanks to Portland not getting back on defense. Transition D was a killer. The Hawks are a young athletic team, why wouldn't they take advantage of our poor efforts in transition?
I'm so fed up with our struggles on offense too. All I ever see are jump shots. Travis forcing it and Blake ice cold from the field. At one point in the game, as I watched Andre Miller dribble around at the top of the key, I saw absolutely no one cutting or looking for the ball. The Blazers don't look smooth at all right now.
The good news in this game? ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Portland Blazers, Atlanta Hawks, Andre Miller

On Sunday, Steve Blake got his groove back from behind the arc. He led all Portland scorers with 18 points and seemed confident, shooting 4-for-5 from deep. Andre Miller never got his game going, but against an aging Mike Bibby and rookie Jeff Teague, I like our chances. It's Andre's turn to do work tonight in the Rose Garden; double digit assists seems like a good prediction!

Brandon Roy normally has the clout to win most matchups in the NBA, but he and Rudy have a tough task in front of them. Not only do they have the very underrated Joe Johnson, but the acquisition of Jamal Crawford makes Atlanta very dangerous offensively. I like Roy to have a good night tonight, but the tandem of Johnson and Crawford can outscore almost any shooting guards in the league.

Petteri Koponen Watch: Halloween Edition

Hippo dropped us an update on Petteri Koponen. The Finns will be heard. Check out the Finnagler in action here .
Petteri Koponen celebrated All Hallow's Eve by sneaking back into Italian Serie A team Virtus Bologna's starting line-up in an away game against Bancatercas Teramo. Virtus managed to snatch a 66-69 (41-34) hard-fought victory. Brett Blizzard's ( Best name of all time? Perhaps.-Ed. ) three almost consecutive three pointers set the tone early on, but Italian national team sharpshooter Valerio Amoroso caught fire and Bobby Jones took Bancatercas Teramo up by seven at half. Amoroso continued carrying his team in the third quarter, but after Jones' foul trouble, Bologna was able to shake opening difficulties. Three-pointers by Koponen and Viktor Sanikidze brought Virtus within four (63-59 with seven minutes remaining), David Moss tied the game with just five minutes remaining and LeRoy Hurd sank a wild three-pointer to put Virtus up 63-66.
Trail Blazers Top Thunder 83-74

Tonight in Oklahoma City, the Trail Blazers shook some early cobwebs and finished off the Thunder 83-74.
Steve Blake led Portland with 18 points including 4-of-5 from deep while Brandon Roy finished things off to bring Portland's record to 2-2.
While it's ridiculous to think that a win could be this important so early in the season, the Blazers needed this game. Coming off brutal losses to Denver and Houston, a loss in Oklahoma City would have blown a gasket for a stressed out Portland fan base.
This game had me on a roller coaster of emotion, after the first quarter Portland seemed to have control over this young Oklahoma City team with a commanding 25-13 lead. But after LaMarcus went out following a knee contusion, the team seemed to lose control. The Thunder nearly tied it by half time, coming within two points. Brandon Roy was struggling and not getting any calls. He and Nate were frustrated, and nothing felt right.
Fortunately Steve Blake stayed steady throughout. He was finally ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Portland Blazers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Brandon Roy, Steve Blake

Power forward LaMarcus Aldridge limped off the floor in the first quarter of the Portland Trail Blazers' game against the Oklahoma City Thunder because of a bruised right knee. A team spokesman said Sunday Aldridge's return is questionable. Aldridge came out of the game late in the first quarter and did not play in the second period after having his knee taped on the Blazers bench.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Portland Blazers, LaMarcus Aldridge, Oklahoma City Thunder

Portland Trailblazers vs. Oklahoma Thunder: Lets Get Interactive

Because its Sunday and you have nothing better going on (by "you" I mean "I") why don't we get a little creative during the Blazers vs. Thunder game.
Whoever tweets or emails me the funniest game related thought/observation/joke/whatever else will be the winner. I'll put your brilliant quip in the game recap.
That exposure alone can get you millions of dollars in endorsement deals. If that isn't enough, I can send you my broken LaMarcus Aldridge bobble head, but I really don't want to.
Yes, this is a thinly veiled attempt to actually get something worth reading into a game recap of mine.
I'll be twittering away during the game. Direct your cleverness towards me: http://twitter.com/Seth_Johnston .
I don't want to exclude any members of the Twitter Resistance. (How many of you are there now? Both my parents are on Twitter now, so there can't be many).
Send your old school e-mail like an elderly person would to sethjonstn@gmail.com if you hate Twitter. I would give you my cell phone number ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Portland Blazers, Oklahoma City Thunder, LaMarcus Aldridge

Is Greg Oden Turning into a Taller Version of Ben Wallace?

When Greg Oden entered the NBA in 2007, many predicted he would emerge as the league's greatest center since Shaquille O'Neal.
So far, that hasn't been quite the case.
After missing his entire rookie season due to injury, Oden finally made his way onto the hardwood last season finishing with averages of 8.9 points and seven rebounds per game.
Those stats would have been ideal for an undrafted rookie, but not for a former number one draft pick.
He has averaged 4.7 points, 10 boards, and 3.3 blocks per game through three games this season.
While Oden's scoring has been dreadful, his defensive numbers haven't looked too bad. The other night at Houston, he recorded an impressive five blocked shots.
So maybe he's not going to turn out to the dominant 20-10 center that you dump the ball to when the game is on the line.
He might just turn out to be a Ben Wallace-type of guy or in other words, no offense whatsoever, but lots of rebounds and blocks.
In addition, Oden could take home a couple ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Greg Oden, Ben Wallace, Portland Blazers, Shaquille O'Neal

A recurring theme in tonight's game will be two of our guys trying to stop one young star. Russel Westbrook is a stud, he's become a great addition to this Thunder team. He can score at will and his ability to find his teammates has improved in every game. It'll be interesting to see how Andre and Steve attack Westbrook. As long as Blake hits a few threes and Miller gets into a groove offensively, Portland should win this matchup.

Brandon Roy had his first huge offensive game against Houston last night in a losing effort. He did everything he could to keep Portland in it but defense killed us. The Thunder are yet to just throw James Harden into the mix but he's definitely near ready to play for this team. Rudy's ability to create space and get hot will balance out this matchup. Blazers win here. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Portland Blazers, Oklahoma City Thunder

Blazers-Rockets: Houston Wins Without Big Stars 111-107

On a day dominated by football in Oregon, the Blazers took a trip to Houston to take on the pesky Houston Rockets.
Unlike Tuesday's opening night game, the Rockets were focused and determined to show the Blazers they can play without Yao, McGrady, or Ron Artest.
This particular contest was different than any I'd really seen before from these two teams. Offense seemed to dominate for both, with Houston coming out on top.
At this point in the season, even though it's very early, Portland's defense seems to be a major concern.
Time after time, the Rockets would swing the ball around the perimeter or Aaron Brooks would beat his man, and everything broke down. Our guys didn't rotate, switch or play help defense.
The good news however, is that Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge found their rhythm offensively. Against a tough defensive team like Houston, it's great to see LA being assertive and Brandon doing it all from hitting threes to getting inside for 3-point plays.
As far as the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Houston Rockets, Portland Blazers

Houston had to overcome a 42-point performance by Brandon Roy and a determined Trail Blazers offense that kept the game close to the end.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Houston Rockets, Portland Blazers, Trevor Ariza, Aaron Brooks, Brandon Roy

Aaron Brooks has proved in this first week that he can be a scorer or a distributor. He's obviously one of the best players on a talent-thin Rockets team. I still like Portland's tandem, Blake needs to hit three's tonight to prove his worth and Andre really just needs max minutes. I like our guys tonight.

Brandon Roy continues to put up good numbers but his shooting percentages are down. I think he's still struggling with his role in a crowded lineup. Rudy was electric on Thursday and I expect more of the same as he comes in and shakes things up. Ariza had a big offensive game Thursday so look for more production from him. BRoy will lock Trevor up.

Denver Nuggets to Portland Trail Blazers: We Are Still Better

At the 7:19 mark in the fourth quarter, LaMarcus Aldridge found a red-hot Rudy Fernandez open beyond the arc. He made the extra pass, Fernandez drained the three, the Blazers led 81-74, the Rose Garden was rocking, George Karl called time-out, and the fans just knew the Blazers were off to a 2-0 start. The win over the Nuggets would be especially sweet as Brandon Roy had arguably outplayed Carmelo Anthony. They were overcoming sub-35 percent shooting and a non-existent presence from Aldridge, and hey...it is the Nuggets. We hate the Nuggets, particularly their arrogant, strutting, inked up Birdman Chris Anderson. Furthermore, even though the crowd was really out of it all night, possibly due to the combination of brick-laying shooters and fouls being called on average one per minute, this game had a playoff intensity. Martell Webster and Carmelo Anthony were going all Marty McSorley on one another, Nene, Kenyon Martin, Greg Oden, and Joel Przybilla looked like they were having a WWE tag-team ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Portland Blazers, Denver Nuggets

Carmelo Anthony scored 19 of his 41 points in the fourth quarter and the Denver Nuggets were helped by Portland's trouble at the free-throw line for a 97-94 victory Thursday night. Greg Oden missed a pair of free throws with 4.6 seconds left, squandering a chance for Portland to go ahead. "I feel like we came out here and stole the win," Anthony said.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Portland Blazers, Denver Nuggets, Carmelo Anthony, Greg Oden
