Sacramento Kings' Jason Thompson Emerging as a Premier Post Player

Drafting Jason Thompson garnered mixed reactions from fans and analysts alike. Sacramento selected Thompson 12th overall in the 2008 NBA Draft. Thompson came out of Rider University, a small school located in Lawrenceville, N.J. Since then many skeptics have been silenced. Thompson has been very productive. In his rookie campaign he averaged 11 points per game and seven rebounds. This season Thompson is averaging a double-double, pouring in about 15 points per game and 10 rebounds per game. The former Rider University product has begun to settle in nicely for Sacramento. Thompson is a cornerstone in the team's offense in the post. The man, known as JT, has also posted 20-point, 10-rebound stat lines on several occasions this season. Thompson has emerged as a heavy hitter in what was thought to be a sparse Kings rotation. King of the World: Jason Thompson Quietly Having a Breakout Season

Any resident of central New Jersey has seen this show-and-dance before. In 2007, any visitor to the Bronc's Zoo could see Jason Carlton Thompson taking the big shots and and making the big plays. And now he's moved this program to the National Basketball Association. Thompson recently had his streak of five double-doubles broken by scoring eight points and grabbing nine rebounds in a loss to the Chicago Bulls. Not coincidentally, the Kings went 4-1 over this streak to improve their overall record to 5-4. When the Kings' leading scorer, Kevin Martin, went down with a wrist injury, Thompson instantly stepped up. He has become their second leading scorer, behind rookie point guard Tyreke Evans. He is their leading rebounder. He even ranks third in assists. Even before the Kings took him twelfth overall, Thompson was a star at Rider. Backup center Aaron Gray , who hasn't played this season because of a stress fracture in his lower left leg, was hospitalized Monday because of fluid buildup in his right knee. After being examined by a Bulls physician, Gray was admitted to the hospital so the antibiotics used to treat the condition could be administered intravenously. Gray was expected to be released from the hospital by this morning. ''He's feeling better,'' coach Vinny Del Negro said before the Bulls played the Sacramento Kings late Tuesday. ''Hopefully, he'll be on the trip sometime. Not exactly sure when he'll be on the trip, but he's feeling better, and they got some of the redness out.''

Prior to the Houston Rockets lackluster effort against the Sacramento Kings, Daryl Morey and the organization cut ties with energetic, but sporadically played Pops Mensah Bonsu. This move comes as a surprise to fans as some were clamoring for him to receive more minutes because of David Anderson's slow adjustment to the NBA game. When the door for more minutes had unexpectedly opened, it was shut closed just as fast. The motive was quoted as a move to help get under the luxury tax, and allow for more roster flexibility. The first question arises, roster flexibility for what? After watching the game against the Kings, and seeing the Rockets lack of size getting exposed against the lanky Jason Thompson, it was clear how much the Rockets lacked that interior presence with size and rebounding prowess to anchor the defense. After watching another pathetic effort by the Golden State Warriors against the Sacramento Kings, it has become clear that the Warrior players have given up on Don Nelson. The question is, how can you blame them? Nelson is one of the most overrated coaches in NBA history. When he has the right system, his teams can be pretty competitive, when it's not the right system, then his teams are awful. That latter description is what suits the Warriors for this season. If it were any other NBA franchise, Nelson would be fired, but since Larry Riley is basically Nelon's right hand, Warriors fans are going to have to endure another pathetic season. So far, this season has been disgraceful. There's no rhythm to this team, there's no plays, it's mostly one-on-one moves, questionable shot selection, and careless mistakes, and it's not going to stop anytime soon.
