Larry's Losers In the SEC, Final Week of the Regular Season

Last week saw this humble enterprise beginning to peak with my second week of perfect picks including the "upset" of LSU. I chose Les Miles' picture this week to represent the losers as he was the biggest loser of the week.
Last week brought the season record up to 71-15 and lifting the margin back up to 79 percent and sniffing distance up to a grade of B.
So using the same batch of little smart pills and some musical inspiration from Steve Wiggins and the Steve Wiggins Band (www.stevewiggins.com) playing some really good blues, Baccardi and I are ready to end the regular season with a bang and another perfect prognosticatin' performance?
What's that Baccardi? Well you don't don't understand losers if you don't know the blues, and this guy really knows the blues and he's used that to become a winner so why not me, so hush that backtalk and fetch me my schedule.

  Alabama at Auburn
This year's Iron Bowl may have a little rust on it since it may not have the implications it once carried. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Les Miles, Alabama Crimson Tide

This Was A Good Day to Be A Fan of Alabama Football

Saturday was a fun day. I arrived to the stadium early and met with my publisher "TOUCHDOWN ALABAMA", met our photographer and learned more about photography in 15 minutes than I've known all my life.
We went over some of the beautiful pictures taken by the staff and discussed this past year and the next. We have great plans on increasing the size of the magazine and the content.
They are a great bunch of people and they all do it for the love of the school and the good of the Bama Nation.
I was not in a hurry to get to the press box as usual and arrange all my notes and chart out what keys to game I was planning to track and to make sure I didn't miss the wonderful buffet they always put out an hour before kickoff.
I grabbed a sidewalk vendor cheeseburger and hung out with the fans. I greeted some visiting Chattanooga Moc's fans and gave them some after game dinner ideas and spots to try.
No one is a stranger when you tailgate and talk. I met two brothers from Albertville, Alabama and ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Alabama Crimson Tide

SEC Bowl Projections

With one week remaining in an up-and-down season, the SEC bowl picture is still as muddy as ever.

Even after all the games are completed we still won't know anything for sure until the Sunday following the SEC Championship game. That is not commonplace in the SEC.

Usually there are two elite teams, three to four fringe teams, two to three decent teams, and one lucky-to-be-.500 team in the SEC by this time in the season.

This year the elite teams are there (Alabama and Florida). There are two fringe teams (Ole Miss and LSU). The SEC has a whole slew of decent teams (Kentucky, Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia, Arkansas). The one lucky team still holds true (South Carolina).

The liklihood of having four teams finish 7-5 in the SEC is mindboggling to say the least. Throw in the fact that three teams could finish 6-6 as well, and well, you see why the SEC is not quite what she's cracked up to be outside the top teams.

So without further ado I will look into my crystal ball and attempt to predict the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Alabama Crimson Tide, Ole Miss Rebels, South Carolina Gamecocks

Alabama in Heisman hunt

It's hard to believe Alabama has never had a Heisman Trophy winner. But Tide junior running back Mark Ingram, who rushed for 102 yards and scored on runs of 40 and 25 yards before being pulled at the end of the first half of a 45-0 route of UT-Chattanooga, could break that streak.

Ingram has 1,399 yards rushing with two games to go and is second on the school's all time single season list behind Bobby Humphrey, who had 1,471 yards in 1986.

Task Unfinished: Iron Bowl Next For The Alabama Seniors

The Alabama Crimson Tide soundly defeated the UTC Mocs as everyone in the country interested in college football expected. The victory puts the Tide in the position to finish the regular season undefeated for the second straight year.
The only obstacle left for completion of that preseason goal is the in-state rival, Auburn Tigers.
Alabama started the game with a studder, choosing to punt on 4th-and-1 from the Alabama 45 yard line. Fitzgerald punted the ball into the end zone for the touchback.
After a six play possession that included a first down for the Mocs, Alabama took possession and moved the ball 51 yards in 11 plays for a score on a two yard rush by Trent Richardson. At that point and thereafter, the rout was on.
Following the kickoff and a three and out by the UTC offense, Alabama used two big plays to score again. A 44 yard pass to Julio Jones and 25 yard rush by Mark Ingram quickly put the Tide up 14-0.
Senior Corey Reamer intercepted the ball on the first play from scrimmage ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Alabama Crimson Tide

Mark Ingram Is the Latest Dance Craze to Sweep the Nation

With all the preseason hype surrounding Eric Berry and his possible contention for a Heisman trophy, it only made sense that the University of Tennessee do everything in its power to promote Berry.
Insert "Swiperboy."
The UT basketball player/rapper rhymes about the All-American safety with a music video and a promotional theme song. "Eric Berry" uses the instrumental from a track called,"Halle Berry" by Hurricane Chris. The video was a high-end production featuring cheerleaders, video effects, and highlights from Berry's career funded by the University of Tennessee's athletic department and their Eric Berry for Heisman campaign.
Well, flash forward and now we have another theme song for your listening enjoyment. This time for Alabama running back Mark Ingram and his Heisman run. "Ingy" as it has come to be known is the latest installment of the wave of songs for Heisman hopefuls.
Unlike Eric Berry, "Ingy" is produced not by the university, but by local talent in the Flint, Michigan area.

Florida coach Urban Meyer believes Florida International will be in a bowl game in the next two years. It might help if the Golden Panthers stopped playing powerhouse programs like Alabama and Florida. The top-ranked Gators (10-0) take a break from the rugged Southeastern Conference on Saturday to play fledgling FIU (3-7), a 45-point underdog still looking for a signature win.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators, Urban Meyer, Alabama Crimson Tide, Tim Tebow

Alabama Versus Auburn; My 10 Favorite Iron Bowl Jokes

This is Iron Bowl week in Alabama.
The Iron Bowl is the yearly rivalry game between the University of Alabama and Auburn University.
It is the annual brother versus brother, sister versus sister, husband versus wife, father versus son, mother versus daughter in state rivalry game.
There is no other rivalry games in the nation that even comes close in the shear magnitude and consequences to the fans of both schools. The winner can walk with his head held high for the next year, the loser must slink away and await those consequences.
What the rest of the nation doesn't understand is that Alabama and Auburn fans literally hate each other. I am not exaggerating, they really do not like each other one bit.
Oh, they may work together and even go to church together and they may even be part of the same family and love each other, but during Iron Bowl week all that changes.
During Iron Bowl Week the tension ratchets up a notch or two and everybody's jaws get a little tight and all the small talk ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Auburn Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide, Gene Chizik

What We Learned: Irish are onto something (but not Notre Dame)

Sporting News' Matt Hayes analyzes what Thursday's buzz means to college football.
Replay madness
If only college football were so simplistic.
Ireland challenged France to replay a World Cup qualifying match after television replays clearly showed a French player touching the ball with his hand (an obvious no-no for the soccer ignorant) during an assist of a goal that gave France a 2-1 aggregate victory.
FIFA has ruled out any prospect of a replay, but that hasn't stopped Ireland assistant manager Liam Brady from throwing down the gauntlet:
"Do you want to play the game in Paris? We'll play in Paris," he said.
Imagine if, instead of choosing his words carefully, Les Miles stepped to the podium two weeks ago and said, "I challenge Nick Saban to a rematch. We'll go right back out there now and replay the last six minutes, starting with the LSU team getting the ball, first-and-10 at the 31."
Or Bill Stewart challenging Brian Kelly: "Now, Bri, we both know that ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Cincinnati Bearcats, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Alabama Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers

What Nick Saban Really Means

Covering Alabama football regularly and attending other Alabama functions with Nick Saban as the speaker is the only way to learn to decipher "Saban Speak." There's a subtle difference between what he actually says and what he means.
The players know this all to well. So do the assistant coaches. I've been told by players they can even tell by his body language how the talk is going to go.
They say if he grabs the lectern or a table, he's mad and trying to stay under control. If he pumps his hands up and down, he's frustrated about something, and if he tilts his head, he's happy.
But when he makes and holds eye contact with you and doesn't take his eyes away, watch out.
After learning all this I went back to watch some of the post-game press conferences I taped and I'd have to say they were spot on.
But for the fans at home that don't get to witness the little things, let me help you out with some of the "Saban Speak," or "Sabanisms" as I like to call them.

Greg McElroy thought he was prepared for the starting job as quarterback at the University of Alabama. He thought he knew what to expect, but the recent criticism has gotten under his skin.
Though he is a junior, this is his first year at the helm of a program whose quarterback gets thousand times the publicity and scrutiny of the state's Governor. This is the first year he's had to endure being circled by the press in the media room and picked over like road kill by a flock of vultures.
It has become evident in watching him over the season how McElroy's mood in these meetings went from excitement and pride to annoyance. At least in the media room, most are both professional and kind to Greg in the post game interviews. However, the press that comes after has burned him a little.
And so do the blogs and forums that post fans' displeasure with his mid-season slump.
He thought he was prepared for such things. Greg said that he watched how John Parker Wilson handled himself with the criticism ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Alabama Crimson Tide, Nick Saban

Alabama Crimson Tide Comes Prepared For the MSU Bulldog Bite

Mississippi State gave signs of preparedness and aggression in pre-game warm-ups that were sensed by Alabama head coach Nick Saban.
In the pre-game talk, the Alabama coach warned his players to be prepared for a street fight.
Saban told his players, "you're going to have to go toe-to-toe, and change the way they think, in terms of the way we play and execute. Do you have enough honor in yourself to be responsible for yourself and what you're supposed to do? Do you have enough courage to do it in any circumstance and have the perseverance to do it all the time?"
Moreover, the MSU head coach Dan Mullen infused a heavy dose of inspiration into his squad during the pre-game coaches talk as well. He then pulled out a new jersey for the team to wear onto the field of play.
The Bulldogs hit the field in Black jerseys with purple numbering, well prepared and full of energy to take on the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide.
Are All the Stars Aligning for Alabama As a Team of Destiny in 2009?

In what is unveiling to be a season of firsts and lasts, this Tide team appears to be peaking at the right time to finish the season. Yesterday marked the first time in Nick Saban's career that he has posted back to back 10-0 starts, and the first time Alabama has done it since 1974 and 1974.
It also marks the 29th game in a row that the Tide has not allowed a rusher a 100 yard game, and last night Alabama held Miss. State to about half it's season average in rushing.
This is the year Alabama will have to win the SEC Championship to preserve it's record of winning at least one in every decade since a champion has been named. This is certainly proving to be an important year for the history books.
Saturday night brought out yet another team "Blackout" against Alabama, and another Alabama blowout result. Gimmicks haven't worked against Alabama since the arrival of Nick Saban, just hard work and except for the kickoff return team, Mississippi State had little of that to show.
"We had several ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Alabama Crimson Tide, Nick Saban, Florida Gators

Top teams roll; storied programs take plummet

College football, like much of the 2009 season, held to form Saturday. No. 1 Florida , No. 2 Texas and No. 3 Alabama kept the national title chase a three-team derby with typical wins.

No. 4 TCU looked like a sure BCS bowl team by waxing No. 16 Utah 55-28.

"If the nation didn't think that this was enough style points, then I don't know what is," coach Gary Patterson told reporters. "We're just going to go about our business."

But outside TCU's statement win, the biggest developments of Saturday's college football games included the handful of storied programs that continued their shocking slides:

Notre Dame
What happened: Anemic offense for three quarters put the Irish in an 18-point fourth-quarter hole at Pittsburgh. The No. 8 Panthers held on, 27-22, and eliminated ND from reaching a BCS bowl .

How can anyone outside of Knoxville not be relishing in the debacle going on in Kiffinville. It is too sweet an opportunity not to shove in the face of the boys in Orange and Black. I mean if you talk smack it will eventually come back to bite you, but this is just too funny.

Not only are these players coached by Kiffin and his staff, but they are from his first recruiting class. Two of whom are his prized recruits, of which he boasted so often about. We all know about the trash talk and everything like that so no sense in recapping it.

Instead of prolonging this any further let's just jump right into the trash talk the top SEC rival coaches should be laying on Lane. Oh, just one question, Is there any truth to the rumor the jail is allowing them to where their orange jerseys instead of jumpsuits?

FBS: Lacking Dominant '09 Team

There has been a lot of talk about which non-BCS school will make a run at the title and if big conference teams can hold them off. The truth is, the two teams that play for the national title may or may not be the best two teams in college football, including a Texas-Florida championship game. This year, the controversy comes from the fact that there are no great teams, just a bunch of really good ones.

  My top three

1. Texas Longhorns
The Longhorn defense has been very stifling this year, holding opponents to just over 12 points per game. With not much of a running game, Colt McCoy has had to throw the ball more than in previous years. He has completed a very high percentage, but has also thrown as many interceptions as games played. Not very impressive statistics if you ask me.
I know in years past the Red River Rivalry has been a game of huge BCS implications, but this year Oklahoma was depleted offensively and the Longhorns still struggled to beat them. They have shown to be ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators, Tim Tebow, Urban Meyer, Alabama Crimson Tide, Texas Longhorns

Alabama's Streak of Being an SEC Champion in Every Decade is No Big Deal

The first SEC Championship Game was in 1933 and the winner was Alabama. Since then the Crimson Tide have won an unprecedented 21 titles. That's eight more than second place Tennessee and over twice the number of fifth place Florida.
Sheer numbers are not the only thing that makes Alabama the all time king of the SEC; you would also have to factor in consistency. Alabama has won at least one SEC Championship for every decade since the first one.
However, Alabama's last SEC Championship was in 1999. Since that date Alabama went through the Dubose fizzle, the Franchione fiasco, girls gone wild with Mike Price, and the Mike Shula experiment.
Those were some of the craziest, probation filled, dark days that Alabama has ever had to endure. An SEC Championship, not to mention a shot at a National Championship would finally once and for all put a period on this dark decade.
That means to keep that streak in place, this is the year that Alabama must win the SEC.
This is certainly a good year for ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Alabama Crimson Tide, Nick Saban, Florida Gators

Week 11 story lines: Florida, Alabama are on upset alert

1. Last chance
OK, chaos lovers. Here's your last chance to see the season knocked sideways. The nation's top two teams in the BCS playing dangerous road games in the SEC, trying to clear one final hurdle toward the biggest regular season game ever.
Greg McElroy and Alabama could be in trouble if they overlook Mississippi State.

Yep, ever.
On the surface, BCS No. 1 Florida at South Carolina and BCS No. 2 Alabama at Mississippi State shouldn't be the biggest remaining tests for the SEC heavyweights. It should be season finales against rivals Florida State and Auburn.
But those two games, despite the bitter, ugly nature, won't cause problems for the Gators and Tide. They're rivalry games; which is to say, Florida and Alabama will be emotionally and mentally ready for both.
The danger is this week, with all the subtle subtexts pointing to fourth-quarter, last-team-with-the-ball wins.
"Every game is its own entity," Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy said. "You can't ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators, Alabama Crimson Tide, Louisville Cardinals, Tennessee Volunteers

No. 3 Alabama's Mark Ingram is earning the attention of the Heisman Trophy crowd, while Mississippi State's Anthony Dixon is putting up similar numbers with a fraction of the hoopla.
Alabama and Florida, Shocking Statistics and How They Will Change

You can take statistics and show any point you want to prove and take common opponents and prove either side of an argument in some cases. Such is the case with Alabama and Florida.
  Common Opponents -
Florida beat Tennessee by ten points and Alabama beat them by only two. Therefore Florida must be the better team. But wait, Alabama beat Arkansas by by28 points and Florida just squeaked by with a three point win, so Alabama must be better.
They both had a similar game against LSU so they must the same. But wait, Florida beat Kentucky by 34 points and Alabama only beat them by 18, so does that give the edge to Florida?
By adding the scores of common opponents, Alabama beat them 109-52 and Florida beat them 100-43. Alabama scored nine more points and Florida nine less points to be scored. Boy that sounds like two pretty evenly matched teams.
The casual fan may be shocked to see that Alabama actually scored more points against common opponents and that Florida allowed less points, since ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Alabama Crimson Tide, Florida Gators

Alabama Must Remember Every Game Counts Or They Could End Up One And Done

For Alabama fans and players there was, of course, a great sense of accomplishment when Alabama defeated LSU and won the SEC's Western Division on Nov. 7th in Tuscaloosa, Al.
There was also a great sense of relief by Alabama players and fans that one of Alabama's goals had been accomplished as well.
Many Alabama fans immediately turned their attention toward Florida and the SEC Championship Game. Some overzealous fans even started looking forward to the BCS Championship to be played in Pasadena, CA, on Jan. 7, 2010.
It's not that they weren't aware that there were still three more regular season games on Alabama's schedule. They just would rather fast forward to Dec. 5, 2009, and the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta, GA, and beyond.
Who wouldn't rather dream about Championships than think about Alabama being in Starkville, MS, on Nov.14.
Well, I hate to spoil the party for those Alabama fans, but there are still three teams left on the Tide's regular schedule, and that might be a problem.

Andy Staples: Alabama, Florida and Texas all deserve to be No. 1

Alabama deserves to be ranked No. 1 after beating LSU. There's just one problem, writes Andy Staples in this week's Power Rankings: Texas and Florida deserve the top spot, too.
