Spotlight game: No. 11 Oregon at Arizona

  Place: Tucson, Ariz.
Time: 8 p.m. ET
TV: ABC
Line: Oregon by 6
Three reasons Oregon will win

He's back: LeGarrette Blount could contribute for Oregon against Arizona.
Double trouble: After LeGarrette Blount TKOd much of his 2009 season, LaMichael James became the newest Ducks running back to jump from unknown to all-conference-caliber in less than a season. Now, Blount is back on the squad, and indications are he'll see playing time Saturday for the first time since before Labor Day. Last year in Eugene, Oregon rolled up 45 first-half points, then ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oregon Ducks, Arizona Wildcats

Beat my grandma: Week 12 college football picks

                    Dave Curtis

The Week 12 slate for Grams looks curious because of who didn't make the cut. No Florida, Alabama or Texas. No Ohio State-Michigan. No forecast on the future of Notre Done (more on this later).
Go ahead and insert an "every week is a playoff" joke here. With the top 10 on furlough from national prominence, Grams considered a bye week here in November. "Got to rest up for Thanksgiving," she said.
Don't despair, Grams. Somehow, five compelling contests emerged. Penn State looks to upgrade its Florida bowl trip (Orange trumps Capital One). Bill Snyder goes championship-hunting in Lincoln. The Big Game is, well, a big game.
Here are the big five, straight up:
No. 13 Penn State at Michigan State, 3:30 p.m., ABC
The Skinny: As Grams gains steam down the stretch (that 1-4 week looks like an aberration), she's thinking JoePa and his boys might be losing it. "A couple of times, I picked them and ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Penn State Nittany Lions, Ole Miss Rebels, Michigan State Spartans, Stanford Cardinal, Kansas State Wildcats, Arizona Wildcats

Arizona Wildcats Beat Rice Despite Sloppy Play

The Arizona Wildcats looked sloppy against the Rice Owls Thursday night.
Despite winning 66-49 over the Owls, the Cats struggled to find a rhythm in their game.
There was a constant helter skelter surrounding the Wildcats.
Passes flying everywhere, turnovers, and hurried shots. There was not the consistent flow to the game that so many Arizona fans are used to seeing.
A lot of this could be contributed to Sean Miller's substitution rotation. It seemed at every stoppage in play, another Wildcat was trading the floor for the bench and vice versa.
Every scholarship player who wasn't injured played in the game. The team did not seem able to find a rhythm with whoever else happened to be in the game. As a unit, they do not seem entirely confident in each other's abilities.
This has a lot to do with players not yet sure of what their roles are on the team.
Based on the first two games only three players seem to know what their roles are and are confident in doing them.
The first is Nic ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Arizona Wildcats, Rice Owls

Oregon, Arizona eye Rose Bowl berth (AP)

The desert has been inhospitable to the Ducks in recent years. In Oregon's past two trips to Tucson, the team lost its starting quarterback to injury. And in 2007, the Ducks lost more than that. Oregon again visits Arizona this Saturday with both teams playing for a Rose Bowl berth. The 11th-ranked Ducks (8-2, 6-1 Pac-10) sit atop the league standings, and can visit Pasadena in the new year if...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oregon Ducks, Arizona Wildcats

Saturday could help decide USC's Rose replacement

Jeremiah Masoli has thrown for 1,581 yards and run for 558 more this season.
After watching his team get walloped for the second time in three weeks, USC coach Pete Carroll confessed the obvious: The gap between his Trojans and the rest of the Pac-10 had shrunk to almost nothing.
Now the best of the league's nine dwarves will duel in the desert to determine who'll gain the inside track for a Rose Bowl berth. This week's main event, No. 11 Oregon's visit to Arizona, will establish who replaces USC in control of the conference.
The changing-of-the-guard out west might be temporary, but it ranks among the nation's top story lines this season. Within the league, though, the surprise isn't as strong.
"It's all in college football," Arizona coach Mike Stoops said on a teleconference this week. "I don't think there's a big discrepancy among the top 20, 30, 40 teams. There's some significance in some teams, but you look. Everyone has some flaws."

Arizona looks to slow No. 11 Oregon (AP)

After Arizona conceded 55 points to Oregon last year, the Wildcats' coaches might be tempted to destroy the game film. Instead, they're studying it with their players, hoping to find clues to stopping the 11th-ranked Ducks when they visit Arizona Stadium on Saturday night. "There's a lot we can learn off of last year's game," Arizona coach Mike Stoops said.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oregon Ducks, Arizona Wildcats, Mike Stoops

Top 10 (Expected) Sign Topics At College Gameday In Tucson

Before I write a serious article about the biggest game in over a decade for the Arizona Wildcats, I thought it would be a good idea to think of signs that I could bring to College Gameday.

Then I realized that people would steal my ideas and use the one I am using (it's good, trust me).

So I am writing an article on what topics you are likely to see behind ESPN's College Gameday crew when they visit Tucson.

Hopefully next week I will have an article up regarding the top signs seen at the Arizona-Oregon College Gameday.
Arizona Wildcat Basketball Prediction '09-10 Season

After three years of instability at the head coaching position, it is safe to assume that Wildcat fans can expect to see Sean Miller on the bench beyond this season.
The search to find the new head coach was a whirlwind of emotion for Arizona fans that included the highest of highs and lowest of lows.
In the end, though, Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood found his man—the man who may end up being the right guy for the job.
Arizona will start one senior, one junior, and one sophomore and will have five freshmen in their rotation. So this will be a learn on the job and not by watching kind of group.
Nic Wise will obviously lead the team. The senior has had the privilege of going through the roughest stretch of an Arizona player in recent history. He has had four coaches in four years, been relegated to the bench, and is now being asked to carry the load for a team that lost its two star players to the NBA.
Junior Jamelle Horne and sophomore Kyle Fogg are going to be counted on for ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Arizona Wildcats

Five Things We Learned This Week: Arizona-Cal

  1. Fluke Play
Let's just get this out of the way.
Say what you want but it needs to be put this way. It never should have come down to that.
The play was one-in-a-million. Sure, Foles should have known not throw the ball a second time, but how many times does something like that come up in a game. Once in a career, maybe.
The simple fact is: Foles played his worst game as a Wildcat and it has nothing to do with him throwing the ball twice on the same down.
If you want to place blame, put it on the 58 minutes before that play happened. The 58 minutes where Arizona struggled to move the ball.
That play is not the reason for an Arizona loss in Berkeley, the first 58 minutes of the game are.
  2. Red Zone Stops
Before I make this article seem like me criticizing Arizona's offense, the defense in the red zone was good.
Once they were done letting Cal get into the red zone, they did their job in making sure the ball did not go into the end zone.
They made Cal kick field goals every ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Arizona Wildcats, Mike Stoops

Shane Vereen scored on a 61-yard run after an odd penalty thwarted a potential go-ahead drive for No. 18 Arizona and California went on to a 24-16 victory Saturday without star running back Jahvid Best. Giorgio Tavecchio kicked four field goals, giving Cal (7-3, 4-3) an 18-16 lead with a 22-yarder with 4:46 remaining.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, California Golden Bears, Jahvid Best, Arizona Wildcats

3-Pointers: Does UNC really need Harrison Barnes?

Sporting News' Mike DeCourcy analyzes what Thursday's buzz means to college basketball.
McDonaldland
When Harrison Barnes arrives at North Carolina's first basketball practice in October 2010, you won't be able to throw a Royale with Cheese onto the floor without hitting a McDonald's All-American perimeter player.
There'll be six at either point guard, shooting guard or small forward:
Point guard: Larry Drew, Dexter Strickland, Kendall Marshall (he'll make it, trust us). Shooting guard: Reggie Bullock (him, too). Small forward: John Henson, Harrison Barnes (of course).
Man, that's a lot of talent. So it's worth asking: Did Carolina really need Harrison Barnes?
A 6-8 small forward from Ames, Iowa, Barnes is rated the No. 1 college prospect by Scout.com. So absolutely the Heels will make good use of him. His game is so sophisticated, so college-prepped, he would start for this year's team. He can shoot, handle, pass and understands the game at a high level.
Having Barnes will make the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Arizona Wildcats, North Carolina Tar Heels

For Mike Stoops and the Arizona Wildcats, Reality Can't Come Soon Enough

Last Sunday I did an article breaking down the top 10 teams and showing why pretty much all of them have flaws and no one really deserves the No. 1 ranking.
Consider this article an extension to that, as I'm about to let you know why Arizona doesn't deserve their "lucrative" position at No. 18 in the latest BCS standings.
You see, Arizona is about to be torn a new one in their next four games: at California, No. 14 Oregon, at No. 11 USC, and at Arizona State. They will likely go 1-3 in those next four games.
Why? Because the 'Cats have no defense.
This "juggernaut" UA team has allowed 27 or more points in half of their games this year and 30 or more in three of their eight. Keep in mind that they played such powerhouse offenses as NAU, WSU, Central Michigan, and UCLA in the games that they didn't.
So essentially, every time the Wildcats play someone halfway decent on offense, they get a hole burned in them. I wonder what Danny Sullivan would do to them...
Wildcat fans should thank god ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Arizona Wildcats, Mike Stoops, Oregon Ducks, California Golden Bears, Southern California Trojans
