Q&A: Getting the Scoop on the Auburn Tigers

Here at RazorbackExpats, we’ ve been looking forward to the Auburn game all season. Not because we’re anticipating a win, but because it gives us a chance to chat with one of the funniest and most talented bloggers out there: Jerry of The Joe Cribbs Car Wash . So, read on to get his wildly entertaining take on Auburn’s season so far, the Tony Franklin soap opera and if Tommy Tuberville would rather have dinner with Nick Saban or Bobby Petrino. (And be sure to click here to see our responses to Jerry’s questions about the Hogs.)
Quick editors’ note: questions were exchanged before Franklin got canned, so, yes, we are aware that he has been booted.

Give us your quick assessment of Auburn’s season so far. Is it safe to assume that things haven’t gone the way fans had hoped or expected?
Uh, yes. Quite, quite safe. Not so much on the defensive side of things, where save for one iffy half against LSU the Tigers have been every bit as ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Auburn Tigers, Tommy Tuberville, Nick Saban, Alabama Crimson Tide, Arkansas Razorbacks

SEC Power Poll: Week Six

With a couple of top teams idle and only one big game this past weekend (featuring Vanderbilt!), our Power Poll is fairly uneventful this week. But don’t take our word for it... check out the overall results to see what our fellow SEC bloggers think.
  1. (1) Alabama (defeated Kentucky, 17-14) 2. (2) LSU (idle) 3. (3) Georgia (idle) 4. (4) Florida (defeated Arkansas, 38-7)
Yawn.
  5. (6) Vanderbilt (defeated Auburn, 14-13) 6. (5) Auburn (lost to Vanderbilt, 13-14)
Ancient scholars are currently poring over arcane texts to see if Vandy being undefeated and No. 1 in the conference at this point in the season equals some sign of the apocalypse. (Given the way the rest of the world is going, we’re inclined to say that it is.)
Meanwhile, some words of comfort for Auburn fans: We know you’re getting tired of struggling to score in the high single digits, but don’t worry...you’re due for a 40-point offensive explosion against the Hogs this ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Arkansas Razorbacks, South Carolina Gamecocks, Ole Miss Rebels

Analyzing Florida's Offense Against Arkansas

A reporter called it mundane at times. The head coach called it awful at times. “It” was the Florida offense against Arkansas.
A glance at the box score and news might lead you to think that “it” wasn’t that bad. You’d see 38 points scored on over 500 yards of offense, and two members of it earned All-SEC honors for the week. What could possibly have gone wrong?
Well, “it” didn’t pass the smell test for most of the first half, and "it" had a more difficult time getting into a true rhythm than it did even in the loss to Ole Miss. There was some sputtering, there were a lot of hankies on the field, but ultimately the game ended in a breakthrough.

  Florida’s Game Plan
For the first time all season, I could definitely tell that Florida had a well-defined game plan. Even against Tennessee, they of the squad that’s ranked fifth in the country in total defense, the offense kind of did whatever it wanted to almost ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators, Tim Tebow, Urban Meyer, Arkansas Razorbacks

Arkansas Analysis: My Hogs, Right or Wrong—Part Two

Yesterday Razorback Expats commenter and occasional contributor J. Hawg 3 treated us to Part One of his evaluation of the hits and misses of the Hogs’ preseason conventional wisdom. It somehow managed to be hilarious, insightful, and depressing all at the same time. Continuing with that theme, here’s Part Two.

  6. Houston Dale is going to have a pretty darn good season at Ole Miss, and they’ll love him for a year or two.
  RIGHT .
He was left with a stable full of studs lacking leadership and motivation. That’s HDN’s cup o’ tea. Also his cup o’ tea: losing embarrassingly to Vanderbilt, and then beating Florida in the Swamp. Get used to it, Rebels.

    7. Our freshman wide receivers and running backs are going to be awesome.
     WRONG .
With the receivers, it is easy to see why they are not producing, because futility, thy name is Dick. The running backs, well, were we just misled about Curtis and Johnson? I thought they ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Arkansas Razorbacks

Florida Will Beat Arkansas, But Can They Cover?

Florida Gators 3-1 @ Arkansas Razorbacks 2-2 Line: UF - 24.5 Both Florida and Arkansas are coming off disappointing losses, but that is where the similarities between these two teams stop. Florida lost in a stunner to Ole Miss in the Swamp while Arkansas lost by 42 to old SWC rival Texas.
  Florida Offense vs. Arkansas Defense
QB Tim Tebow is not having the same type of year he did in '07, especially on the ground. Florida has yet to find a reliable alternative to Tebow on the ground. Instead, they are using Percy Harvin on sweeps and options and a myriad of shaky tailbacks out of the backfield.
Harvin has been electric since returning from injury, but Urban Meyer must limit the punishment his body takes. The offensive line has been hit with the injury bug as of late causing breakdowns last week against the Rebels. Arkansas' defense has not been very good this season. Their 166 ypg given up on the pass may look decent, but you have to realize most teams have been up on Arkansas and ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators, Arkansas Razorbacks, Tim Tebow

Arkansas Analysis: My Hogs, Right or Wrong—Part One

Now that the first month of the football season is mercifully behind us, it seemed like a good time to turn the floor over to one of our favorite commenters, the illustrious J. Hawg 3, for his analysis of the carnage so far.
In this two-part series, J. Hawg revisits the preseason conventional wisdom about the Razorbacks to see where the experts were right and where they were horribly wrong.
Sit down, get comfortable, remove any sharp objects from the room, and read on (and stay tuned for Part Two tomorrow).

As we near the midway point in this, the Dark Season of Distress, I decided to go back and revisit all the conventional wisdoms that I and most of my cohorts adopted going into this year. Here they are: My Hogs, Right or Wrong.

  1. Under Bobby Petrino, Casey Dick will become a more effective quarterback.
     WRONG.
(And when I say “wrong,” think of Dom DeLuise screaming it in Blazing Saddles .)
Though he showed early signs of playing with more ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Arkansas Razorbacks

Arkansas Razorbacks: No Relief in Sight

Given the rather dreary state of the football team, Razorback fans might be tempted to look ahead to the basketball season. Well, the folks at Athlon Sports have done just that and … well, how’s the baseball team looking?
Athlon predicts that John Pelphrey’s second Arkansas squad will finish dead last in the SEC West . Given that the Razorbacks lost six important seniors after last season and that Patrick Beverley is now presumably stocking up on berets , such a projection is not surprising at all. Still … (sigh).
Considering what may be ahead of us this fall and winter, perhaps this link will come in handy.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Arkansas Razorbacks

College Football: Are Heisman and Other Awards Worth the Hype?

College Football: Heisman Worth The Hype? Last year, Tim Tebow became the first sophomore ever to have his name etched on the bronze stiff arm, but does the mythical image the media has created for Tebow live up to what the trophy has historically represented? The issue becomes whether or not the media has influenced the award to the point where it no longer holds the same prestige. The media has undoubtedly placed the Heisman in a league of its own in terms of prestige, but how do the other top honors predict its winner? Breakdown of Top Honors in College Football: Tier 1: The Heisman Memorial Trophy: Awarded to Nation’s Most Outstanding Player (Dates back to 1935) Voting: United States is split into six regions, each of which contain 145 media votes. Each previous winner also has votes, as well as one going to the public. Every ballot works on a point system, assigning 3 points for first, 2 for second, 1 for third. Tier 2: Maxwell Award: Awarded to College ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Tim Tebow, Florida Gators, Arkansas Razorbacks

Bobby Petrino to Sue Houston Nutt for Negligence (Humor)

In a suit filed today in Washington County, Razorbacks head football coach Bobby Petrino is suing ex-Razorback and current Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt, claiming Nutt left him with the "worst-coached players in America." When asked about the suit, a University spokesman had this to say:
"Coach Petrino took this job with the understanding that the current group of Razorbacks may be a little thin on talent compared to the rest of the SEC, but had at least been coached well. Upon his arrival and his observations over the first month of the season, coach Petrino has decided that Houston Nutt and his ex-staff members did no coaching whatsoever, and the current group of Razorbacks is not only poorly coached, but the worst-coached players in America. With every game, we are witnessing Houston's negligence of this great program."
Anonymous players not wishing to be identified supported this theory and plan on testifying once the case goes to trial.
"Coach Nutt spent a good 45 minutes to one hour every ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Houston Nutt, Arkansas Razorbacks

Florida-Arkansas: Five Ways for the Gators to Beat the Razorbacks

When the Gators Are on Offense

  Let It Rip
Please, please, please take the shackles off Tim Tebow and the rest of the offense. Much like the USC Trojans of a few years ago, the Gators are equipped with a great QB and a dynamic multi-purpose threat. They also have a decent supporting cast of playmakers, much like those same Trojans.
The only difference is that Florida shows only flashes of brilliance with their offense, and it's time for a change. This is the game to unleash the Ferrari of an offense that has looked like a Kia at times this season.

  Fulfill the Role
The Gator offense was looked at to carry the team this season while the defense got its feet underneath them. The exact opposite has been true, as the defense has carried the team so far, while the offense has struggled to find a rhythm.
This needs to be the week that the offensive ship rights itself. They put up 30 points and over 400 yards last week, which is a step in the right direction.

A Much-Needed Diversion of Arkansas Razorbacks Memories

On a day when the stock market made even the Hogs’ last two games seem like wild successes by comparison, it feels like time for a completely random diversion. With that in mind, your friends at Razorback Expats would like you to climb off that ledge for a moment and enjoy this excellent recap of the 1989 victory over Heisman-winner Andre Ware and the Houston Cougars.
Not only is it high on my personal list of great Razorback games (I was fortunate to watch it from the War Memorial north end zone), no less of an expert than James Rouse cited it as his favorite in our recent Q&A. So, sit back, forget your troubles, and watch Rouse, Quinn Grovey, Derek Russell, and Co. work their magic:

Arkansas-Texas: Grading the Razorbacks After the Blowout

Chris Bahn of ArkansasSports360.com and Alex Abrams of The Morning News have turned in their grades of Arkansas’ mauling at the hands of the Longhorns. Academic probation is almost certainly just around the bend.
(Coach Petrino—perhaps you ought to look into this .)
Here’s the overview of Bahn’s assessment (click here to read the full report if you dare).

Notable quote: “Arkansas is not a good team right now. These Razorbacks can’t score. They can’t stop other people from scoring. They can’t avoid penalties on special teams. They can’t avoid drive-killing mistakes. They can’t...They can’t do much of anything now.”
And here’s the summary of Abrams’ grading ( here’s the full report).

Running Backs: D
Wide Receivers: C
