Auburn, Chizik Enter "Amen Corner" with Confidence

Two weeks ago, Auburn was coming off an embarrassing loss in Baton Rouge to LSU. A game where Auburn's offense under Gus Malzahn looked as bad as it had all season and left the Auburn faithful wondering if this 2009 campaign would mirror the 2008 season where the team collapsed down the stretch. Well, coming off a big win over a ranked Ole Miss team, and a homecoming blowout of Furman, the Tigers are once again confident as they enter what former Auburn coach Pat Dye used to call, "Amen Corner." The last two games of the season against their two biggest rivals, Georgia and Alabama. Last year, Auburn came into this game with 5-5, and was really down to their last shot at making it to a bowl game in 2008 at home against Georgia. The Tigers came up short and went on to finish 5-7 with a blowout loss to Alabama to end the season. Entering "Amen Corner" this year though, this Auburn team is in a much different situation. Could It Be Crying Time For The Iowa Hawkeyes Like Auburn Had Years Ago?

I'm a football purist. I believe in basic truths and unbroken promises. I believe that when you recruit and train young men and tell them that if they work hard and beat everyone they play, they will be champions. Only this is the NCAA, division one to be exact. And this year there could be more than one undefeated team that won't be a champion, or even have the opportunity to play for it. This year's "Jilted Judy" looks like it could be Iowa, a team that could be a conference champion of a major BCS Conference, and still be left out of the "Big Show". It's happened before. Auburn went 13-0 but had to settle for playing in an also ran bowl. It was called strength of schedule and the SEC was down that year to boot. The same could be said about both Iowa and the Big Ten this year. This year the major networks are saying that a one loss SEC would get the nod over an undefeated Big Ten Team. That should say volumes as to low they've sank in the eyes of the top national press box figures. If ...

Enough with the Uniform Gimmicks

Black jerseys, black helmets, black pants, and who knows what is next. Yeah, it can be fun to see the Dawgs wear something cool and different from time to time, but the purpose behind it sickens me. Don't get me wrong, when I saw the team bust through the banner against Auburn donning the black jerseys for the first time, I shed tears. Not just because it was different, but because my Dawgs looked excited and hungry, and that spark is needed from every once in a while. Here we sit, two seasons later, after another blistering loss to the Gators. Not only did we have to watch as Tim Tebow broke our heroe's record (it only took him like 13 extra games), but we had to see possibly the most atrocious excuse for a uniform I've seen this side of Oregon. People have defended the "Black Hats" by saying, "New uniform schemes excite teams for big games." My response is, why does Georgia need anything else to excite them to play the Florida's, Alabama's, and Auburn's of the world? Since when is playing a ...

As a salute to the day's variety, here's a four-pack of touchdowns that featured something extraordinary in the run, the catch or the bounce of the ball. LSU just defeated Auburn by a score of 31-10. It is 2009 and it is a rarity for this game to end with a lopsided victory. Most of the games against Auburn have nicknames (The Earthquake Game, The Penalty Game, The Interception Game, The Night the Barn Burned) and most of them are decided by three points or less. Forty years ago, one LSU-Auburn game stood out as they met at Tiger Stadium. It was 1969 and LSU fielded one of its best teams ever. My family members were avid LSU fans. Two sisters attending LSU, one a newly-wed to an LSU student; one a freshman attending the homecoming game; my father and mother attending; and my brother and I there for the big game against the Auburn Tigers lead by Pat Sullivan. This game was before the LSU-Auburn Game became an annual event. They were not big rivals, though they were in the SEC. Auburn was a strange opponent for this 14 year old fan. Ole Miss vs. Auburn Preview

Last week Ole Miss vs. Arkansas was an upset for Arkansas as the Rebels won 30-17 improving their record to 2-2 in the SEC and 5-2 overall. Jevan Snead had a career best performance along with Dexter McCluster. In 2009, Jevan Snead's stats stand here: 107 completions, 194 attempts, 1440 yards, 52.6% completion, 14 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Dexter McCluster's receiving stats stand here: 23 REC., 335 yards, 14.6 YPR., 64 (TD) long, 2 TD., and 287 rush yards. The way that the Rebs beat Arkansas, as good as Arkansas has been, Auburn should have a tough challenge on their hands this Halloween night. The Rebels defense should hold Auburn back to force the punt or field goal. Their defense has been good the last few games so they need to keep it that way. My prediction is Ole miss 28, Auburn 24.
