It is December 7, 2009 and we are one day removed from bowl selection. I am an Iowa fan and I am pleased as punch to be going to the Orange Bowl to play Georgia Tech. I admittedly was hoping to go to the Fiesta Bowl to play Boise State, but for me, it is no matter. However, I must admit I was shocked to see the Fiesta pass up either of their choices for the at-large Big Ten team (Iowa or Penn State), both known cash cows, to sign up TCU against Boise State, both extremely worthy teams, but hardly a dream match-up for bowls that are historically and primarily interested in how much money they can bring to their fair cities. So, I was left to ask myself what the reasoning behind the Fiesta Bowl's surprising choices could possibly be and I came up with two potential options. The first is that the Fiesta Bowl selection committee are not too bright, don't realize their intellectual limitations and as none-too-bright people have made the fatal error of thinking too much. The Southern Fried Playoff (SFPO) is a simple 16-Team single-elimination tournament that would integrate some of the existing bowl venues while allowing the other bowls to thrive and prosper. SFPO qualification is simple. Win your conference and you are in, period. Each conference can determine a champion as they see fit, with a championship game of divisional winners or a round robin with tie breakers, leave it up to each conference. ND and the other independents might want to join a conference but they don’t have to. In addition to the conference champions, five ‘at-large’ entrants would be included based on the composite rankings from the AP, USA Today and Harris Interactive polls. The ‘at large’ bids would go to the five highest ranked ‘non’ champions, irrespective of conference affiliation. We all know that the NCAA is not fond of people questioning the validity of the BCS. They have done their best over the years to thwart any suggestions that center around a playoff system, and have provided counter arguments that use only a select bit of information to prove that bowls are more beneficial to all involved. The BCS is a flawed system and even the casual fan can see that. But far be it from the NCAA to let any argument that proves this fact gain any traction. This season will be no different. The selection committee assured on Sunday night that there would be no such arguments this postseason. As the committee held its collective breath, Hunter Lawrence drilled a game-winning FG for Texas and sent TCU and Cincinnati's hopes of crashing the BCS title game flying out the window. Alabama and Texas will be selected to face each other in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 7, 2010. Because Alabama will be selected first, the Sugar Bowl, to which the SEC winner is an automatic bid, will get the first at-large selection. Barring some unforeseen act of God, they will select the Florida Gators. The next selection will go to the Fiesta Bowl, to which the Big 12 typically sends its runner-up. What a 16-Team College Football Playoff Would Look Like: BCS=BS

So, we have ended another regular season and conference championship week. We have finished this season with an unthinkable five undefeated teams. But only two will have a chance to compete for a national championship (if you can even call it that). In our current system, TCU, Cincinnati, and Boise State will all get hosed. They've only been completely perfect, having finished without a single loss. TCU has won its last seven by 27 points or more, including victories over a top-15 team (BYU), and a top 25 team (Utah). Cincinnati has played a very tough schedule. They have defeated seven teams with a winning record. Two 7-5 teams, Three 8-4 teams, and two 9-3 teams. That is quite impressive. Boise State beat Pac-10 champ Oregon, and they have impressive victories over Fresno State, Nevada and Idaho. Plus they have steamrolled nearly everyone on their schedule. College Coaching Rumors: Chris Peterson Still in the Mix at UVA?

We brought this story to you just over a week ago, and it caught on like wildfire for a brief moment. The rumor was University of Virginia officials had reached out to and made contact with Boise State head coach Chris Peterson. After some talks it appears that rumor was false. Chris Peterson compared the UVA rumor to similar rumors that put him at Mississippi State. Obviously those rumors proved to be false. However, this morning the Chris Peterson to UVA reared it's head once again. For the second time in a week, Mac McDonald, the former UVA play-by-play man, announced on his radio show that a deal was in place between Chris Peterson and the University of Virginia. This is on the heels of McDonald announcing that a deal was already in place between the two parties. While many have discredited Mac McDonald for being erroneous in the past, perhaps there is a bit of life to this rumor.
