I was the first writer on Bleacher Report to report that Notre Dame was going to fire head coach Charlie Weis, and now I'm the first to report who his replacement is: Brian Kelly. Yes, Kelly, the Cincinnati head coach, will replace Weiss when all is said and done. And all will be said and done as early as next week. Sure, coaches like Bob Stoops and Urban Meyer would be the first choice for the Irish. either of them would represent a major coup for the program. But neither of them are likely to come to Indiana. Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick has been given complete authority and encouraged by key board of trustee members to be ambitious in his search for a replacement for Weis. It is possible that Weis could coach in a bowl game depending on the terms of the separation, according to two sources. Tony Pike was back, Cincy was firing on all cylinders, and the Bearcats throttled a hapless Illinois in Ohio. Pike threw six touchdown passes, and after a slow start that saw the Fighting Illini take a 7-0 lead, the 'Cats kicked things into their usual offensive gear. Perhaps it is a sign of the futile season that Ron Zook has had that following the opening score, Bearcat speedster Marty Gilyard returned the ensuing kickoff for a tying score. From that point onward, the Illinois defense did nothing to stop Pike's arm or the receiving tandem of Gilyard and Ben Guidugli, both of whom had a 100+ yard day. To illustrate the defensive woes of the Illini, one only needs to glance at Pike's line on the day: 32/46, 399, 6TD, 0 INT. The Bearcats and Gonzaga were tied at 55 inside the final 15 seconds when Cincinnati freshman Lance Stephenson floated a lob pass to center Yancy Gates. As Gates tried to complete the play, he was met above the rim by Bulldogs center Robert Sacre, who attempted to block the shot. What a college football season it has been. We've seen remarkable performances by surprising teams, big schools go down (take that USC!), and we've seen big upsets nearly every week. In the eye of a football fan (well, a general fan because if your school was one of those who got upset, you're probably not too happy), this season has had almost everything you could want. As the teams get ready for the conference championship games, however, you remember the existence of the terrible BCS system. Instead of seeing the loser of the SEC Championship get thrown into the playoffs for a chance at redemption and to still capture the national title, they will instead likely play in the Orange or Sugar Bowl as an at-large team. Now I know that some people will argue that this SEC game is still as important and will still be as exciting, which I agree with to a point, but it doesn't happen on Jan. 7, and it isn't for national honors, which takes away some of the glory of it. Coach Brian Kelly said Monday the senior's injured left forearm has healed more during the Bearcats' bye week, and he's planning to let Pike make his first start since Oct. 15 at South Florida. A judge warned University of Cincinnati sophomore quarterback Zach Collaros on Thursday that he could spend the bowl season in jail if he doesn't get his act together after being accused of showing a fake ID at a bar. Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge Bernie Bouchard scolded Collaros for failing to begin a court-ordered program on the dangers of underage drinking.
