Tanner Smith and Demontez Stitt scored 14 points each and No. 18 Clemson won its sixth straight game over rival South Carolina, 72-61 on Sunday. The Tigers (7-2) used a late 18-6 run to pull away -- and bounce back from a bad defeat to Illinois on Wednesday night when they surrendered a 23-point second-half lead and lost 76-74.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Tanner Smith, Demontez Stitt, South Carolina Gamecocks, Illinois Fighting Illini, Clemson Tigers, North Carolina Tar Heels

Clemson Can't Hold On for the ACC Title Against Georgia Tech

Last night the Tigers threw away their chance at the ACC Title and a trip to the Orange Bowl. The game was back and forth the whole time, as each team fought for the lead. The Tigers went up by one point with six minutes left in the game, but Georgia Tech rallied with a touchdown.
C.J. Spiller, ACC Player of the Year, had a great game. He had four touchdowns and a career-high 233 rushing yards. He was then named the Most Valuable Player. This amazing effort from Spiller has definitely put him back in the spotlight for the Heisman race.
It was evident all around that Spiller played a great game. Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson even wished him the best of luck in the NFL.
This game was Georgia Tech's first ACC Title in over a decade. The Yellow Jackets played a great game on offense and defense and deserved the win.
The stands at the game were packed almost evenly with fans for both teams, which made the game even more exciting. Each side played a great game and the students here are ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Clemson Tigers, C.J.
C.J. Spiller: The Best Player in the Country

(Give that young man a Heisman Trophy.)
Well, I'm convinced. You should be too.
C.J. Spiller is the best player in the country.
Now, the good people who count the Heisman votes do not care what I think, hence I do not have a vote. But were I had one, it would go to Spiller.
Let us forget, for a moment, that he used the biggest stage available to him to play the most impressive game of his life, Spiller is everything you would want in a Heisman Trophy winner.
He's multi-talented, equally scary on offense and special teams. He can carry the load, not that he needed to tonight. He's more exciting than any player since Reggie Bush. He's a game changer all by himself. Look at what his teammates did in the ACC title game against Georgia Tech, and you'll see that Spiller was pretty much carrying Clemson by himself.
Most of all, though, Spiller is what Dabo Swinney called a "program changer." He has completely renovated the entity that is Clemson football. Because of C.J. Spiller, being a Tiger ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, C.J.
C.J. Spiller: 'Them guys just made the extra play they needed to make'

TAMPA, FLA.—Clemson senior running back C.J. Spiller solidified his standing as a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate with his showing Saturday in a 39-34 loss to Georgia Tech in the ACC championship game. Named the game's most valuable player, he rushed for 233 yards and four touchdowns, scoring from 3, 41, 36 and 9 yards out. He also returned three kicks for 63 yards, caught a pass for five yards and even notched a tackle.
Q: Can you talk about what it's like to have such a (Heisman-worthy) performance like that and come up just a little short?
C.J. Spiller: First of all, I have got to give honor to God. Without him none of this would have been possible for our team. A lot of people had us written off, not even to be in this position, but we stayed together and I want to give the credit to my offensive guys. Those guys did a great job of covering them up, wide receivers did a great job of ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, C.J.
Nesbitt's maturity as QB leads Yellow Jackets to title

TAMPA, FLA.—Scott Blair was the most efficient quarterback on the field for Georgia Tech when it edged Clemson in September.
The problem was, he's the kicker.

Josh Nesbitt was much steadier under center than the last time Georgia Tech faced Clemson.
In Round 2 of Georgia Tech-Clemson—with an ACC title and BCS bowl on the line—Georgia Tech quarterback Josh Nesbitt made sure he wouldn't be upstaged by the kicker.

Nesbitt was clearly in command of the Yellow Jackets' option attack in Saturday's 39-34 rematch win in the ACC championship at Raymond James Stadium.
He played his best during a vital juncture in the third quarter, completing a back-breaking 70-yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas. It was an even more impressive performance considering he missed some of last week's loss against Georgia because of an ankle injury.
For the game, he hit the century ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Clemson Tigers

Georgia Tech-Clemson: Post-Championship Thoughts

(Demaryius Thomas scored a touchdown in Georgia Tech's ACC Championship victory.)
That was simply a great game. Here are some postgame thoughts on said instant classic, column to come.

Before I say anything else, please let me say this: If I had a Heisman vote, (obviously, I don't) C.J. Spiller would get it, unequivocally. He is the best player in college football. End of story, no more questions.
Josh Nesbitt should be the frontrunner for ACC player of the year next year. The one thing I kept waiting for Tech to do was turn the ball over, and they didn't. They almost did, but Nesbitt was the man who recovered Roddy Jones' fumble. He is the engine; the reason Georgia Tech's offense goes.
Man, this game...just wow. This was a great game. Seriously. The playmakers on both sides made plays, Tech just had a couple more of them, but this was what the ACC was desperate for.
I said it at halftime: Kyle Parker was going to have to win this game for Clemson. It rarely fails to be ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Clemson Tigers, Paul Johnson

ACC Championship Game Preview: Which Team Bounces Back?

Even though both teams lost last week to their in-state rivals, this game still means a lot to both of them...I think. There is precedence of this for Georgia Tech. Back in 2006 they had a similar season, yet lost to an underwhelming (but favored) Georgia team, and then went on to lose the ACC Championship Game to Wake Forest the following week. Can the Yellow Jackets respond better than they did three years ago? This and some other keys I asked in 4 Questions for Georgia Tech . Clemson faces a similar predicament after a 17-point beating by South Carolina last week, a team they have beaten five of the last seven years. How will Clemson respond and what are the Tigers other keys (4 Questions For Clemson post) ? Like the SEC Championship, these two teams are very evenly matched, so much so that Vegas has installed this game as a pick'em most places. I think this game comes down to turnovers, big plays, and who can stop the run. Both teams will see ample film time of the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Clemson Tigers

Spotlight Game: No. 12 Georgia Tech vs. No. 25 Clemson

  Place: Tampa, Fla.
Time: 8 p.m. Saturday
TV: ESPN
Line: Pick 'em
Three reasons Clemson will win

Clemson will try to get the ball into C.J. Spiller's hands any way possible Saturday.
Patient defense: It's a lock that among its 50 or so rushing plays, Georgia Tech and its option-based offense will sprinkle in at least a couple big gainers. Clemson knows this well, after allowing the Yellow Jackets 301 rushing yards in a 30-27 loss in September. The Tigers must take them in stride and remember a thesis driven home all week by the coaching staff: Stick to our plan. "You've got to make sure you're doing your job, or they can score pretty easily on you," Clemson defensive back DeAndre McDaniel said. "We're just going to try to stay focused and make sure everybody is on the same track."
Enjoy the offense: The Tigers enter Saturday with the advantage of having the best player on the field in do-everything back C.J. Spiller. They better utilize him. Ohio State's student section chanted "Big Ten!" Illinois players gathered for a five-man celebration, almost as in shock with themselves as was the stunned Clemson crowd.

Big Ten springs to life, finally ends drought vs. ACC

The Big Ten's comeback to a 6-5 victory in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge – its first ever in the series' 11 years – gave us lots to think about:

The Big Ten has a pulse. After gaining preseason praise, the conference stumbled early. This could provide essential momentum.

It doesn't get better than Bo. How many of the other 21 Challenge teams would trade rosters with Wisconsin? But how many wouldn't rather have coach Bo Ryan? The Badgers' victory over Duke clinched it for the Big Ten, and maybe that was fitting.

No lead is safe with Clemson. The Tigers lost late leads twice against North Carolina in 2007-08, plus an 18-point edge against Villanova in the NCAAs. It's no surprise to see them blow a 23-pointer against Illinois.

He has yelled at them, pleaded with them to take the reins offensively of their team.

With a little encouragement, Illini come all the way back

CLEMSON, S.C. — The momentum was building for Illinois. Clemson's seemingly insurmountable lead was shrinking. The whispers of what would be a historic comeback for Illinois were starting to swirl around Littlejohn Coliseum.

And then, suddenly, the Illini were dealt a potentially devastating blow. Junior guard Demetri McCamey picked up his fourth foul of the game, whistled for a blocking foul with a little less than 14 minutes left in the game.
Mike Davis makes a key contribution by giving a teammate a pep talk.
"I grabbed him and told him, 'You cannot foul out. If you foul out, we're gonna lose,' " said junior forward Mike Davis, who finished with a game-high 22 points. "I grabbed him and told him to play solid, move his feet and put a hand up, but don't foul out."

At that point, the Illini couldn't afford to sit McCamey, the leader of their backcourt. The young Illinois guards are talented, no doubt about it. But they're also erratic, and there's no ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Illinois Fighting Illini, Clemson Tigers

Illinois guard Brandon Paul: 'This is a great win for us'

                    Ryan Fagan, Sporting News

CLEMSON, S.C. — Illinois freshman guard Brandon Paul scored 20 points in his team's dramatic 76-74 comeback victory Wednesday night at Littlejohn Coliseum. The Illini were down by 23 at one point in the second half before rallying for the win; that comes after the loss to Utah, when Illinois blew an 18-point lead. Paul spoke with Sporting News' Ryan Fagan and other reporters after the game.

Question: Does this type of win give you guys a new level of confidence?
Brandon Paul: Definitely. We wanted to come out and show how we could play. We wanted to play our butt off and just compete.

Q: Is it the type of game that can turn around season?
BP: Yes, definitely. This is a great win for us, but it's just one of many games. We can't get too hyped up about this. We've just got to continue to get better.

Q: Were you surprised how quickly they jumped out to that big lead?
BP: I ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Illinois Fighting Illini, Clemson Tigers

Clemson Running Back C.J. Spiller Wins ACC Player of the Year Award

The ACC media made a big mistake when they voted for All-ACC honors. They relegated C.J. Spiller to special teams, while lesser running backs gained first team honors on the offense.
Today, the members of the ACC media made up for their mistake, voting Spiller the 2009 ACC Player of the Year. Spiller recorded 29 of the 40 votes cast, finishing ahead of Georgia Tech quarterback Josh Nesbitt.
Thanks to the newly named ACC Player of the Year, Clemson will appear in its first ever ACC Championship this Saturday.
C.J. Spiller has put up phenomenal numbers this year, breaking records left and right. This season, Spiller has:
-Set the ACC career all-purpose yardage record
-Set the ACC single season all-purpose yardage record
-Set the NCAA career kick return touchdown record
-Scored nine touchdowns of over 55 yards
-Scored a touchdown by rushing, passing, receiving, and returning
-Rushed for 310 or more all-purpose yards in two games

If you think those stats are impressive, consider ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, C.J.

Once again a season of ACC football has come and gone much like a Jackie Chan flick. Sure there were a few moments worth remembering, but you'd never buy the DVD and nobody's going to win an Oscar for any performances.

As objective football fans, however, we can decipher the pros and cons of each team in the ACC regardless of how they may match up with other BCS conferences.

Let's flip through the teams (in alphabetical order) to drill down just what went right and what went wrong...and what the final grade is for each team as we approach bowl season.
Clemson's C.J. Spiller Should Be ACC First Team RB

With all due respect to Georgia Tech's Jonathan Dwyer and Virginia Tech's Ryan Williams, Clemson's C.J. Spiller was robbed.
Dwyer and Williams were named as the ACC's All-Conference First Team running backs, getting 67 and 63 votes respectively.
Spiller was First Team specialist (76 votes), but only managed to get Second Team running back with 62 votes.
Spiller as Second Team running back is absolutely ridiculous, especially in the case of Dwyer getting the nod over Spiller.

Spiller doesn't have the rushing yardage (912) that Dwyer (1236) has, but he also doesn't have the offensive line and scheme that Georgia Tech has.
And please don't give me the "Dwyer is a better pure running back" garbage.
Dwyer is a better running back in between the tackles, mostly because of his size. But Dwyer doesn't have the speed, vision, moves, or the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield that Spiller has.

Georgia Tech vs Clemson: A Preview of the ACC Championship Game.

It's ACC Championship game week! It's Georgia Tech vs Clemson for the right to go the Orange Bowl. Both teams are coming off bitterly disappointing losses to their in state arch rivals. Georgia Tech lost 30-24 to the Georgia Bulldogs and the Clemson Tigers lost to the South Carolina Gamecocks 34-17. Despite the losses the two teams have had an exciting rivalry the last decade and this should be a close competitive game.

Clemson will typically line the quarterback up in the shotgun, and run from that formation. For Clemson a stiff South Carolina defense stuffed them. Georgia Tech's defense has been inconsistent at best, and got sliced apart by the Bulldogs run game. Neither team is likely to take advantage of the other the way the Bulldogs and and Gamecocks did. So what do I see as the keys to the game?
  How does ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Clemson Tigers, Paul Johnson, South Carolina Gamecocks, Georgia Bulldogs
