Colorado keeps Hawkins despite 4 losing seasons

Colorado coach Dan Hawkins will get a fifth season in Boulder instead of a pink slip and a $3.1 million buyout. Athletic director Mike Bohn announced Thursday that he's sticking with his coach despite a 16-32 record, including 2-20 on the road. The Buffs have endured four consecutive losing seasons under Hawkins, who has cleaned up a program tarnished by scandal under his predecessor, Gary Barnett, but has been unable to find success on the field.

Colorado's Hawkins will be back next year

Colorado AD Mike Bohn, choosing to end speculation about the future of Buffs' football coach Dan Hawkins, has announced Hawkins will get a fifth year despite four straight losing seasons and a 2-20 record on the road. Hawkins is 3-8 this year heading into tomorrow's Big 12 game against Nebraska. Hawkins was brought in to clean up the program after the scandal pleagued Gary Barnett era-- which he did-- and Bohn apparently is convinced the Buffs are making progress on the field. Three of the losses were less than seven points and CU was competitive into the fourth quarter in a road loss to West Virginia. Besides, if CU had pink slipped Hawkins, it would have cost the school a $3.1 million dollar buyout.

Where the Buffalo roam The buzz about Dan Hawkins getting dismissed (and bought out) at Colorado grew hot not because the Buffs lost by three on the road to a ranked team Thursday night. The bad vibes are back because of how things went down. Colorado's final four offensive possessions ended with a missed 49-yard field goal, a turnover on downs (incomplete pass on fourth-and-2 at the Oklahoma State 28), a fumble near midfield and a punt with 2:45 remaining. The Buffs either led by four or trailed by three points on each occasion yet ended with another loss, sending Hawkins' record at CU to 16-32 (and 2-20 on the road). Sporting News staff reports While there has been no official announcement about whether QB Zac Robinson will play in Saturday night's home finale against Colorado, reports have surfaced that Alex Cate has been taking most of the snaps in the Cowboys' closed practices. Robinson was knocked out of Saturday's game against Texas Tech by a nasty helmet-to-helmet hit from cornerback Jamar Wall, In addition to a suspected concussion, sources have told The Oklahoman that Robinson also is dealing with a sore throwing shoulder. Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said early in the week that Robinson had responded well to tests for symptoms of a concussion, but his practice time reportedly has been limited. Though Robinson's status for Thursday night's game against the Buffaloes could be a game-time decision, Colorado coach Dan Hawkins says he is preparing as if Robinson will play.
