Schiano searching for answers at Rutgers

Rutgers may have been an overnight sensation in 2006, but Greg Schiano is back desperately searching for answers after a 13-10 loss at Cincinnati in an ugly Big East game dropped the Scarlet Knights’ record to 1-5. The seniors have underachieved. So called stars like Tiquan Underwood, Courtney Greene and quarterback Mike Teel have underperformed. The offense has become punchless. And there has been no real leadership.

Wow. That’s a mouthful.

It is obvious Schiano has not been able to replace the players he lost last season. There is no Ray Rice to bail this team out, no offensive line to plow the way, holes in the secondary and defensive line. In recent days, Schiano has been asked about his recent recruiting classes and there are even growing thoughts Schiano should consider playing more than one quarterback.

It’s just been one of those seasons everyone wants to forget, especially if the Knights finish 3-9 - or worse. Next game: home against UConn.

They should beat ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Connecticut Huskies, Syracuse Orange

Longhorns rope in SoCal stud

Texas is on the verge of becoming one of the two most powerful recruiting forces in the West, along with UCLA. The Longhorns dipped into SoCal, getting a commitment from 6-7 forward Jordan Hamilton, who averaged 27.6 ppg as a junior for powerhouse Compton Dominguez. Hamilton chose Texas over UConn, Kansas, Syracuse, USC and Cal.

The Longhorns already have verbals from Avery Bradley, a top 25 prospect from Findley Prep in Vegas and forward Shawn Williams of Duncanville, Tex.

Ron Johnson No. 17 The Tar Heels are raising hell in the ACC. While Florida State and Miami beat each other up, Butch Davis has a system that works, and it's got his team in the Top 25. J.C. Hagan No. 17 Alex Farrer No. 18 Mosang Miles No. 18 GeorgiaDawg No. 19 Tim Pollock No. 19 Archie Adams No. 19 Butch Davis has the Tar Heels thinking Orange Bowl. All they need is some help by somebody beating VaTech. Toby Parker No. 19 Butch Davis has these guys playing well. Jason Hackney No. 19 Dominant performance over UConn this past weekend. I think Butch Davis has these guys thinking ACC championship. Kevin Buller No. 19 Two years ago a poll asked which new coach would make the biggest noise: Saban or Davis, I chose Butch! If not for a last minute error against the Hokies, the Tar Heels would be 5-0 right now. A big win over a much improved Notre Dame team this week would be great for the rolling program!

North Carolina kept sending a linebacker at the punter, kept handing off to a former safety and somehow put its bulky defensive tackle in position to intercept a pass. The Tar Heels' defense got offensive -- and for that matter, so did the offense and special teams -- and that led to a statement victory.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, North Carolina Tar Heels, Connecticut Huskies

Pitt almost got an extra garbage score to steal the cover. Pitt -1 unit
  Northwestern won outright. +1 unit
Virginia is really bad. Dominated by Duke, Cavs -1 unit.
Purdue didn't have much. -1 unit
VA Tech beats the Huskers outright. Hokies over Huskers. + 1 unit
Alabama devastated teh Dwgs. Roll Tide + 1 unit
Colorado State fell to the ax. - 1 unit

Minus 1 Unit for the week. Plus eight for the year .
A Hokies, Tide, and Wildcats money-line parlay would have been beautiful. I coulda been a contender...

This week:
Ohio State - 1 at Wisconsin
The Badgers looked bad, turning the ball over four times and losing to Michigan last week. Look for them to bounce back at home against a still shaky Ohio State squad with a true frosh QB.

Washington Huskies Preview: Please Beat Arizona!

  The Ronnie Fouch Revolution begins!
Sigh. Most fans have thrown in the towel and so have I. However, that doesn't stop me from supporting this team, no matter how many losses we have. The Huskies go in as 18-point underdogs. The last time they were double-digit underdogs against Arizona, this happened; we ended up winning as well. Pre-Game Points:

No more game-changer in Jake Locker. Ronnie Fouch now takes control of the erratic Husky offense. Expect to see a lot of pocket passing. Fouch didn't do too poorly against Stanford. Jermaine Kearse and D'Andre Goodwin (if healthy) will be his main targets throughout the game. Also watch for freshman standout Anthony Boyles, who is supposed to make his first appearance of the season.

What happens if Fouch can't pass the ball? It'll be a long, painful game to watch. You'll probably want to tune out if the Huskies' first drive is a three-and-out. Don't be fooled by last week's performance. Ronnie Fouch is the ninth-best ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Washington Huskies, Jake Locker, Connecticut Huskies

Another Transition Game for Huskies at Quarterback

Ronnie Fouch will take over the Washington Huskies' starting quarterback job Saturday. Fouch replaces the injured Jake Locker. The style of the two quarterbacks—Locker more of a runner, Fouch more of a passer—is akin to the situation in 2006 when Isaiah Stanback, the mobile quarterback, was hurt, and Carl Bonnell started the final five games of the season.

The situation in 2006 when Stanback was hurt
The Huskies were 4-2, having lost the previous week at No. 3 USC. Both of their losses at that point were to ranked teams on the road, the first against No. 15 Oklahoma, 37-20. The talk was about which Bowl game the Huskies would make.
After going 2-9 the previous season, Tyrone Willingham had turned things around and had the Huskies pointed in the right direction, beating the lower-level teams and competing with the biggest programs in the country. The Huskies averaged 25 points a game in the first six with Stanback. They gave up 22 a game.
Then Stanback got hurt.

Favors doesn't favor Huskies

Atlanta South’s 6-9, 220-pound Derrick Favors, arguably the best frontcourt prospect in the country, has narrowed down his list to Georgia, Georgia Tech, Memphis, Florida State, Kentucky and NC State, eliminating UConn.

• Loyola Marymount’s new coach Billy Bayno, who did some serious recruiting when he was an assistant to John Calipari at UMass in the early ‘90’s, used his Baltimore connections to pick up a verbal from 6-6 Terrell Vinson of Montrose (Md.) Christian, who had multiple Big East schools on his list.

Bayno, who has signed seven quality players since he arrived last spring, may be just two years away from seriously challenging Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference.

Nate Miles expelled from UConn

UConn’s chances to win a national championship took a big hit when 6-7 freshman forward Nate Miles - who had dominated summer pickup games in Storrs and had been compared to former Huskies’ star Coran Butler - was expelled from school following a university administrative hearing on allegations he abused a 19-year-old female student from nearby Manchester.

Miles was accused by the alleged victim of becoming physical and trying to pressure her into sex when she came to his dorm room. A restraining order was issued Sept. 22 and Miles was arrested after placing a call to the woman.

At Superior Court in Rockville, Miles answered felony charges of violating the restraining order and was referred to the court’s family relations staff for counseling and the charges could be dropped if he stayed out of further trouble.

But the university’s administrative board ruled that Miles’ sins warranted expulsion.

Miles, from Toledo, has attended several high schools in hopes ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Connecticut Huskies

The Washington Huskies football team had 35 sacks last season, sixth in the Pac-10 but only four fewer than the third-place team UCLA (USC led with 45). But four games into this season and the Huskies are still waiting for their first one, making them the only team of 119 schools in the Football Bowl Subdivision without one.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Connecticut Huskies, Washington Huskies, Southern California Trojans

Why This Washington Fan Isn't Going to Throw Himself Off the Cliff...Yet

I may be on suicide watch as far as most of my friends and families are concerned, but I think that may be a little premature at this point in time.
A while back I wrote an editorial piece on how the college game had passed Tyrone Willingham by in the form of the spread .
However, with the injury to Jake Locker, Willingham might get one last shot to prove his worth as a college coach. He no longer has the quarterback to run a spread offense.
Ronnie Fouch is a solid passer, so look to the Huskies to revert to Willingham's favored West Coast style that he learned and later utilized at Stanford.
Yes, the porous secondary of an already awful defense will have to get better to have any shot of beating Arizona. Yes, the running game will have to establish itself to take some weight off Fouch's inexperienced shoulders.
But look what happened when Locker missed a game last season—the Huskies beat the Cal Bears very convincingly. Yet the next game with Locker back turned into another ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Washington Huskies, Connecticut Huskies

Washington's injured quarterback Jake Locker would like to get back onto the field, even at another position. He said he hasn't talked with coaches about it, and earlier Tuesday during the Pac-10 coaches conference call, coach Tyrone Willingham seemed to pour a lot more cold water on the idea than he had on Monday.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Jake Locker, Tyrone Willingham, Connecticut Huskies

Meet Ronnie Fouch, the Washington Huskies' New Quarterback

Tyrone Willingham showed up on the Redlands East Valley High School Campus in a suit and tie.
The Washington coach was in Redlands, Calif., to see one student in particular, but met many. He walked the campus with the athletic director, Rhonda Fouch, choosing to speak to numerous kids and meet the staff.
Rhonda Fouch was impressed.
"For him to take the time to do that was huge," she said.
Dinner at the Fouches' followed, as did more good impressions of Willingham. Rhonda Fouch and her husband, John, had always raised their son, Ronnie, to be a student-athlete. No, really. If the homework wasn't done, there was no time with friends, no sports, no messing around.
Willingham's philosophy meshed with theirs. He displayed "an aura that he cares about kids," Rhonda said. That's what the Fouch family was after.
So as soon as the offer came, Ronnie committed to Washington. To Willingham, really. When the call came from Cal, a school Ronnie had always had on his mind for his college days, he ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Washington Huskies, Connecticut Huskies
