Kemba Walker scored 15 points and had seven assists for the Huskies, who begin the regular season Friday night against William & Mary. Max Kerman scored 14 to lead the River Hawks, a Division II team that went 21-8 last season.

Guards Jerome Dyson and Donnell Beverly have been cleared to play this season for No. 12 Connecticut. The school's compliance department gave the OK on Friday after going over documents submitted by them as part of a review of the program. The school has not revealed what those documents were, only that they "pertained to their annual eligibility certification.

Jerome Dyson and two other Connecticut basketball players are missing the Huskies opening exhibition game Wednesday night against American International because of problems with their eligibility paperwork. The school says it hopes to have the issues surrounding the eligibility of Dyson and Donnell Beverly resolved as early as Thursday. UConn said it is simply waiting for the NCAA to finish a "routine educational document review for eligibility certification.

A Hartford man has been charged with lying to police investigating the stabbing death of UConn football player Jasper Howard. UConn Police Lt. Andrew Fournier says 18-year-old De'Quan Muhammad was arrested on Monday and charged with making a false statement, hindering prosecution and interfering with an officer. He was being held Wednesday on $200,000 bond and is scheduled to return to Rockville Superior Court on Friday, according to court records. He has not yet entered a plea.

X-rays show Tony Pike's non-passing forearm is healing nicely, so he'll be able to practice with No. 4 Cincinnati this week wearing a new splint instead of his bulky cast. Pike had a protective plate in his left forearm damaged during a game on Oct. 15 and had it replaced. He's missed the last two games while the arm mends, with sophomore Zach Collaros leading the Bearcats (8-0) to wins over Louisville and Syracuse. Pike had an exam Monday that found the forearm is healing well.
