What We Learned: Hawkins back on the hot seat

Sporting News' Dave Curtis analyzes what Friday's buzz means to college football.
Where the Buffalo roam
The buzz about Dan Hawkins getting dismissed (and bought out) at Colorado grew hot not because the Buffs lost by three on the road to a ranked team Thursday night. The bad vibes are back because of how things went down. Colorado's final four offensive possessions ended with a missed 49-yard field goal, a turnover on downs (incomplete pass on fourth-and-2 at the Oklahoma State 28), a fumble near midfield and a punt with 2:45 remaining. The Buffs either led by four or trailed by three points on each occasion yet ended with another loss, sending Hawkins' record at CU to 16-32 (and 2-20 on the road).
Missed opportunities such as Thursday's have plagued the Hawkins era, and the sum of them will inspire deep-pocketed boosters to fund his removal and replacement. Hawkins inherited an out-of-order program when he arrived from Boise State—some folks at CU didn't realize how much effort would ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Colorado Buffaloes, Florida State Seminoles, Florida Gators, Dan Hawkins

The Florida Gators Are Poets of Destiny: A Fan's Poem

The Florida Gators are poets of destiny because they have defined recent times through actions and results translated into words.
The Florida Gators are poets of destiny because they have defined recent times through principles and standards translated into relevance.
The meaning we place on their performance should take into account our view of the team as a whole. Their weekly effort is the primary connection between people and poets who write beautiful verses between the lines.
The Florida Gators are poets of destiny because they inspire their nation with identity and spirit that lifts them to new heights.
The Florida Gators are poets of destiny because they inspire their nation with voice and vision that leads them to championships.
Fly me to the swamp.
Let rise the balloon of popularity, the blimp's view -
To millions, connected to people like me.
Pan left, pan right, I soared with my fan.

Boise State Not Overlooking Utah State: Nevada Wolfpack Is Next

Many of the college elite football teams are playing soft games this week. Florida is playing their rendition of the Boise State-Cal Davis game. The Gators are playing Florida International or something close to that.
The end result should be a sweet Florida victory and it gives them a week to nurse their wounds and get as healthy as they can for Florida State, who is now playing with their backup quarterback. However, all is not cushy for Florida, as their last game is the SEC championship game with Alabama.
Like Florida, Boise State has a potentially easy game coming this week with Utah State. However, Utah State is very well coached and have the players to capitalize on another’s mistakes should Boise State not bring their A-game.
Yet, for all intents and purposes, the Broncos will not overlook coach Anderson's Utah State team, which they are set to play Friday. The Broncos' final game of this season against New Mexico State should not promote any real concern either. The concern for the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Boise State Broncos, Utah State Aggies, North Carolina State Wolfpack, Florida Gators

How To Ruin a Legacy It Took 35 Years To Build

When Bobby Bowden was hired to be the head football coach at Florida State, I was about 12 years old. In my short lifetime, I didn't recall Florida State doing anything. I don't think they ever beat anybody to speak of. I don't recall them ever playing in a bowl game. If they were ever on TV, it was rare. They didn't seem to have any fans. Nobody I knew was a fan of the Seminoles.
The year before he was hired, I don't think they even won a game. Not only FSU, but Miami and Florida were pretty insignificant also. None of them ever competed for championships or played on TV. None ever appeared in Bowl games. Not any big Bowls anyway. Florida had that whole,"never won the SEC" thing going. Miami was thinking of dropping football altogether.
In school, all my friends and I would have out favorite teams, if you rooted for a Florida team, you also had to have a "Real" team to root for. You know, one you might see on TV, play on New Year's Day, compete for the National Title, etc. Some of my friends ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida State Seminoles, Bobby Bowden, Florida Gators

Who Needs Offense?: For the Florida Gators, Defense Is All That Matters

The Florida Gators have now won 20 games in a row. Let me repeat: 20 games in a row.
The Gators' last loss was Sept. 27, 2008. That is ridiculous. Why this team catches so much heat is unreal.
Yes, I understand their offense is not what it once was. Their red-zone touchdown percentage is horrible. But they win games. Winning a game ugly is still winning.
Would Gator fans rather have the offense put up 40 points and lose? I don't think so.
Everyone is waiting for this offense to start clicking. Guess what? It's not gonna happen. Would you rather have your team win five games in a row by 30 points, or would you rather have your team win 20 in a row by a mere field goal each game?
Experts and fans alike need to come to terms with the fact that this offense is not great. The Gator offense is not explosive. The Gator offense is not going to do anything spectacular. The Gator offense is not anything special.
So what? Get over it.
The Gator defense is better now than it was in 2006. This ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators, Urban Meyer, Tim Tebow

Why This Florida Fan Will Be Glad When the Gators' 2009 Season Is Over

I know what you will say: What in the hell are you talking about?
But I will be glad when this season is over. It's not been a lot of fun.
Maybe if it were your school you'd be enjoying a 10-0 record with a No. 1 BCS ranking. But that's probably because you aren't a Gator fan.
2008 was fun. Even when the Gators lost to Ole Miss, the game was entertaining. There were a lot of big plays in that game. It just had a bad ending. But the presser afterward made up for it.
The rest of the regular season, every game was a cakewalk. People ask me, "Isn't a close game more fun to watch?" My answer to that is, "Yeah, if it's not my team playing." I prefer a blowout when it's my team every time. Last year there were many.
Not this year. This year the defense has been outstanding. The offense? Not so much. The plays they made a year ago now seem to turn into passes just off the fingertips or runs that ALMOST get broken for big gains. It's like we are a millisecond off here or a fraction of an inch there, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators

No. 1 Florida finishes perfect in SEC (AP)

Make no mistake about it, No. 1 Florida's run to the top is nothing like last year's. Florida ran over teams a season ago to win its second national title in three years. This time, the Gators (10-0) are doing it as much on mental toughness as on talent. They finished off their first perfect, 8-0 Southeastern Conference regular season in 13 years with a 24-14 victory at South Carolina on...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators, South Carolina Gamecocks

I Have A Dream TCU Beats Florida. I Only Hope Its in The BCS Title Game

Last year the Bowl Championship Series tried their best to put down the perceived underdog. Utah was given the task of playing Alabama, a team one win away from the BCS title game, practically on the road in New Orleans.
So what did Utah do? They embarrassed the Crimson Tide. They beat them from start to finish.
That doesn't make the BCS happy.
The BCS has had two strategies to their automatic qualifying teams, strategy one: put them in a bowl that a victory won't make an impact.
In the 2004-2005 season Utah, led by Alex Smith and coach Urban Meyer, ranked No. 6, played the Big East Champion Pittsburgh Panthers. Utah turned the game into a laugher, but to most fans victory was expected.
What did Utah get for their win? They ended the season ranked No. 4. Why wasn't Utah given the opportunity to play another undefeated team, Auburn?
The answer is simple, why allow the team to earn any respect? If Utah were to win against Auburn what would that do to the system?

Are All the Stars Aligning for Alabama As a Team of Destiny in 2009?

In what is unveiling to be a season of firsts and lasts, this Tide team appears to be peaking at the right time to finish the season. Yesterday marked the first time in Nick Saban's career that he has posted back to back 10-0 starts, and the first time Alabama has done it since 1974 and 1974.
It also marks the 29th game in a row that the Tide has not allowed a rusher a 100 yard game, and last night Alabama held Miss. State to about half it's season average in rushing.
This is the year Alabama will have to win the SEC Championship to preserve it's record of winning at least one in every decade since a champion has been named. This is certainly proving to be an important year for the history books.
Saturday night brought out yet another team "Blackout" against Alabama, and another Alabama blowout result. Gimmicks haven't worked against Alabama since the arrival of Nick Saban, just hard work and except for the kickoff return team, Mississippi State had little of that to show.
"We had several ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Alabama Crimson Tide, Nick Saban, Florida Gators

Top-ranked Gators don't look like a team that is favored to win a third national title in four years, but they just keep rolling along.

Quarterback Tim Tebow isn't really looking much like a top Heisman Trophy candidate, and Florida, quite often, hasn't looked like a top-ranked team that is favored to win a third national title in four years.

Top teams roll; storied programs take plummet

College football, like much of the 2009 season, held to form Saturday. No. 1 Florida , No. 2 Texas and No. 3 Alabama kept the national title chase a three-team derby with typical wins.

No. 4 TCU looked like a sure BCS bowl team by waxing No. 16 Utah 55-28.

"If the nation didn't think that this was enough style points, then I don't know what is," coach Gary Patterson told reporters. "We're just going to go about our business."

But outside TCU's statement win, the biggest developments of Saturday's college football games included the handful of storied programs that continued their shocking slides:

Notre Dame
What happened: Anemic offense for three quarters put the Irish in an 18-point fourth-quarter hole at Pittsburgh. The No. 8 Panthers held on, 27-22, and eliminated ND from reaching a BCS bowl .

Florida brings you the letter of the day: W

COLUMBIA , S.C. -- The Florida Gators know that, at this point in their undefeated season, margin of victory doesn't matter. They're the No. 1 team in the country, and each win -- regardless of any perceived style points -- takes them one step closer to a trip to the national championship game.

"The letter 'W' doesn't get any bigger if you win by more points or anything like that," Gators quarterback Tim Tebow said after his team secured a 24-14 victory with a dominating fourth-quarter effort on the road against South Carolina. The Gators finished their SEC season with a perfect 8-0, and five of those eight wins were by 10 points or fewer.

"Well, we have some good players," Florida coach Urban Meyer said. "It's almost like you expect somebody to make a play, not only myself but our team does, too."

Florida's Justin Trattou: 'It felt like it was up there for like five seconds'

COLUMBIA , S.C. -- Florida defensive end Justin Trattou made the play of the game for the Gators in their 24-14 victory over South Carolina. Trattou snagged a deflected pass for an interception on the first play of the fourth quarter and returning it 53 yards to set up the touchdown that gave Florida a 10-point cushion.

An impressive play, it edges toward amazing when you consider Trattou ruptured his biceps tendon against Arkansas but missed one game. Trattou talked about his Gators' win with Sporting News' Ryan Fagan and other reporters.

Q: When you saw that ball go up in the air, did you feel like everything was going in slow motion?
Justin Trattou: Yeah, when that ball popped up in the air it felt like it was up there for like five seconds, but once I got it, it all happened real fast.

Q: Could you feel your teammates crowding around you on the return?
JT: It felt like, honestly, everybody was around me lead-blocking. It was an amazing feeling.

Tim Tebow closes out his Southeastern Conference regular-season career Saturday with a fellow Florida Heisman winner on the opposite sideline -- South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier.
