The Ultimate Retirement Party For Bobby Bowden Can Be This Weekend

Bobby Bowden has been the ultimate coach for the past several decades.
His win/loss record is incredible and the impact he has made on the game, especially in Florida, is beyond astonishing.
He built a nothing football school into the ultimate powerhouse for over a decade. No team was feared like the Seminoles of the 90's, and no coach as respected as Coach Bowden.
His southern charm and class will never be seen again in the game. Even when critics are everywhere and the love is turning into angry love, Bowden has taken it all in and done his best at all times.
FSU is still rebuilding, and has had yet another season that has Seminole supporters everywhere shaking their head in sadness. Bowden has been asked several times this season what the problem is, why have they not been able to win more games? His response has mostly been the same all year, "... we're really close."
Fact is, he is right. The Noles are really close, but how close?
Not once this entire 2009 season was FSU blown ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Bobby Bowden, Florida State Seminoles, Jimbo Fisher

Conference Call: Tar Heels torrid in ACC

Each week, Sporting News' Matt Hayes ranks the Division I-A conferences—and the teams within each league.
4. ACC
1. Georgia Tech
2. Clemson
3. North Carolina
4. Virginia Tech
5. Miami
6. Boston College
7. Florida State
8. Duke
9. Wake Forest
10. N.C. State
11. Virginia
12. Maryland
Rising
North Carolina: How in the world did this team lose its first three league games? Unthinkable home losses to Virginia and Florida State will keep Tar Heels from playing in their first BCS bowl.
Falling
N.C. State: Tom O'Brien's teams at N.C. State (and Boston College) always have played well in November. After blowout losses to Clemson and Virginia Tech, you can scratch that.

Meyer: I'll be at Florida 'as long as they'll have me'

Florida coach Urban Meyer says he plans to coach the Gators "as long as they'll have me."

With rumors swirling about Charlie Weis' future at Notre Dame, Meyer squashed any potential speculation about leaving Gainesville for South Bend.

Meyer's news conference Monday was his most emotional in five seasons at Florida, with the coach having to pause and compose himself several times while talking about quarterback Tim Tebow and other seniors' final home game Saturday against rival Florida State.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators, Urban Meyer, Charlie Weis, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Tim Tebow, Florida State Seminoles

Fly: As the college football coaching carousel turns

Hey, didn't you used to be a beloved college football coach?
Which coach gets fired first: Charlie Weis, Ralph Friedgen or Mark Mangino? Place your bets now. While we're on the subject of the coaching carousel, the Miami Herald spies hear that Florida State president T.K. Wetherell keeps waffling on the Seminoles situation and might want to let Bobby Bowden come back for one more season in 2010.
Ever wonder what former football wonder O.J. Simpson's up to in prison ? Lifting weights and reading James Patterson novels. "O.J. works out every day. He's lost a lot of weight and he's in great shape," Simpson's longtime producer, Norman Pardo, tells The New York Post. "He says that's one of the benefits of not being able to go out and party all the time like he used to."
Who knew you could get healing via text ? Fly gets new-age medicine, but this is sort of different. Ricky Williams practices pranic healing. Here's how practitioner Daniel O'Hara tells the Miami Herald it ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida State Seminoles

What We Learned: Hawkins back on the hot seat

Sporting News' Dave Curtis analyzes what Friday's buzz means to college football.
Where the Buffalo roam
The buzz about Dan Hawkins getting dismissed (and bought out) at Colorado grew hot not because the Buffs lost by three on the road to a ranked team Thursday night. The bad vibes are back because of how things went down. Colorado's final four offensive possessions ended with a missed 49-yard field goal, a turnover on downs (incomplete pass on fourth-and-2 at the Oklahoma State 28), a fumble near midfield and a punt with 2:45 remaining. The Buffs either led by four or trailed by three points on each occasion yet ended with another loss, sending Hawkins' record at CU to 16-32 (and 2-20 on the road).
Missed opportunities such as Thursday's have plagued the Hawkins era, and the sum of them will inspire deep-pocketed boosters to fund his removal and replacement. Hawkins inherited an out-of-order program when he arrived from Boise State—some folks at CU didn't realize how much effort would ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Colorado Buffaloes, Florida State Seminoles, Florida Gators, Dan Hawkins

How To Ruin a Legacy It Took 35 Years To Build

When Bobby Bowden was hired to be the head football coach at Florida State, I was about 12 years old. In my short lifetime, I didn't recall Florida State doing anything. I don't think they ever beat anybody to speak of. I don't recall them ever playing in a bowl game. If they were ever on TV, it was rare. They didn't seem to have any fans. Nobody I knew was a fan of the Seminoles.
The year before he was hired, I don't think they even won a game. Not only FSU, but Miami and Florida were pretty insignificant also. None of them ever competed for championships or played on TV. None ever appeared in Bowl games. Not any big Bowls anyway. Florida had that whole,"never won the SEC" thing going. Miami was thinking of dropping football altogether.
In school, all my friends and I would have out favorite teams, if you rooted for a Florida team, you also had to have a "Real" team to root for. You know, one you might see on TV, play on New Year's Day, compete for the National Title, etc. Some of my friends ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida State Seminoles, Bobby Bowden, Florida Gators

Jimbo Fisher Shows His Head Coaching Skills

Admit it. When the word came out that Christian Ponder was out for the season the Monday following Florida State's 40-24 loss at Clemson that left FSU with a 4-5 record, the season seemed hopeless.
Backup quarterback E.J. Manual played only in mop-up duty against BYU, one option run versus USF and the last few minutes against Clemson and looked arguably unimpressive in those.
So when the news broke that Manual would be starting his first game as a Seminole as a redshirt freshman at Wake Forest with the Seminole's bowl streak record on the line, many fans felt the season was lost.
But future FSU head coach and offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher had other plans.
Instead of just plugging Manual into his playbook, Fisher tailored the playbook to Manual to ensure he was comfortable with the situation. And when Florida State scored on its first four offensive possessions to take a 24-7 lead, Fisher showed he has the skills and mentality to lead the 'Noles when head coach Bobby Bowden steps ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida State Seminoles, Jimbo Fisher, Clemson Tigers

Solomon Alabi's 17 points led a balanced Florida State offense in an 87-61 win over Jacksonville on Monday night in the season opener for both teams. The 7-foot-1 Alabi helped the Seminoles take advantage of their height in the rout. Five Seminoles finished in double figures with highly-recruited freshman Michael Snaer adding 14 in his collegiate debut.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Florida State Seminoles, Solomon Alabi

Nike announced Thursday that Oklahoma is one of 11 elite programs that will wear Nike's new Pro Combat uniform during the month of November.
Oklahoma "will take the field wearing the Nike Pro Combat uniform, a new system of dress and the lightest football uniform Nike has ever created," Nike's press release stated.
The Sooners will unveil the new uniform on the road against Texas Tech (Nov. 21) or at home against Oklahoma State (Nov. 28).
"Nike designed the Nike Pro Combat uniform to address the evolution of the game: Today's players are stronger and faster and the collisions are more violent and explosive than ever before," Nike's press release stated.
"Nike also worked closely with coaches and administrators at each university and took great care to bring inspiration to the Nike Pro Combat uniforms that each team will wear. Nike designers gave a nod to teams' past national championships, drew upon the heritage of the universities' traditions, and combined these cues into the design ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Nike, Oklahoma Sooners, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Florida State Seminoles, Ohio State Buckeyes

Forecasting the ACC: North Carolina still rules

Sporting News college basketball expert Mike DeCourcy makes his predictions on how everything will unfold in the six major conferences. Today we preview the ACC and the Big Ten , with the Big East and Pac-10 coming on Thursday, and the SEC and Big 12 on Friday.
Bold Predictions
 1. North Carolina will have trouble accomodating all the available frontcourt talent. There are five starting-quality players for three spots. Of course, that's Roy Williams' kind of math problem.
 2. Maryland 's biggest challenge will be finding a winning formula now that its lineup is more conventional. It might take more time than Terps fans would like.
 3. North Carolina will win the ACC. Duke has the kind of experience that wins league titles, but the Devils could be in trouble if backcourt issues arise. North Carolina has players to throw at any problem.
The Best of the ACC
 Freshman: Derrick Favors, Georgia Tech
 Rebounder: Trevor Booker, Clemson
 Passser: Greivis Vasquez, Maryland
