GeorgiaDawg's Five Great Georgia Wins: Part One - Georgia Tech

When you love to write about football, and your team is having a tough year, what do you do?
Well I say you focus on a few great wins in one of the greatest rivalries in the South. Georgia has played Georgia Tech 103 times. Georgia has won 59 of those games, and before Tech's win last season the rivalry had pretty much become one sided.
For Georgia fans they only need to look to the Florida series to understand how those on North Ave in Atlanta feel.
Since 1978, Georgia has won 23 of the 31 games played. Winning 74% of the time can really make your in state rival hate you.
But Tech has a new coach, and a new outlook. They remind us Georgia fans daily of their win last season. They are predicting another win this season, and many more to come with the new Paul Johnson regime.
Only time will tell us how the series unfolds over the next few years. But one thing is certain...history tells us of many great Georgia wins. I'm sure a Tech fan can tell you about many great Tech wins. I will leave ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Mark Richt, Georgia Bulldogs

Top 16: A Few of My Favorite Georgia Bulldog Players

You know how you have those "all-time", "greatest ever", "best of the best" lists filled with stats, historical notations, and what-not? Well, this isn't one of those kinds of lists.

My history of loving Georgia football isn't as long as some or as short as others but I've seen enough Bulldog football in my short lifetime to make this list.

The criteria is quite simple: the players on it made me love Georgia football even more.

That's it. Nothing more.

I will miss a few of your faves no doubt but don't blame that on oversight. Better still, add a few of your faves in the comment section. That should balance it out just fine.

Many of the guys you will see here are from the early 90's and onward, but that is because that is where my working memory spans. I was a toddler when Herschel played so you can do the math on why I may miss a few of the all-time great ones.

These guys are ones I either actually SAW play or have enough video archive history that I could relive some of their key moments ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Georgia Bulldogs

Ten Possible Replacements for Willie Martinez

Willie Martinez was named Georgia's defensive coordinator in 2005 and for three years his defense performed at a high level.

In 2005, Georgia ranked No. 7 against the pass, No. 18 in total defense, No. 8 in scoring defense and No. 15 in interceptions.

In 2006, Georgia ranked No. 5 against the pass, No. 8 in total defense, No. 20 in scoring defense and No. 9 in interceptions.

In 2007, Georgia ranked No. 16 against the run, No. 14 in total defense, No. 18 in scoring defense and No. 8 in sacks.

In 2008, Georgia ranked No. 27 against the run, No. 32 against the pass, No. 22 in total defense, No. 59 in scoring defense, No. 67 in interceptions and No. 72 in sacks.

What happened in 2008? Injuries ravaged the Georgia squad all year long.

Everything would go back to normal in 2009 right? Wrong, it has gotten worse.

So far in 2009, Georgia ranks No. 60 against the run, No. 73 against the pass, No. 68 in total defense, No. 89 in scoring defense, No. 55 in sacks and No. 88 in interceptions.

The time has ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Georgia Bulldogs

Georgia Football: And Now the Ulcer Bleeds

The Georgia Bulldogs are suffering through the worst season of Mark Richt's career. As bad as the season has been, I am afraid it will pale in comparison to how bad things are going to be in the off-season. We ran a BUI poll giving you the reader the opportunity to give a thumbs up or down to every member of the coaching staff. The results were not that surprising. I plan on doing the same poll following the season and comparing the results. I bring this up because my readers, by a large majority, gave Rodney Garner a vote of approval. Not much of a news maker given his reputation as a recruiter and all of the talent he has sent to play on Sunday.
There was a solid handful of Garner critics via email or direct tweets. No one dared go public with any criticism of Garner. Until now. Kensingtondawg delves into the narrative that many in the Bulldog Nation have dared not go. Richt Should Fire Garner First! « The Grit Tree

Enough with the Uniform Gimmicks

Black jerseys, black helmets, black pants, and who knows what is next. Yeah, it can be fun to see the Dawgs wear something cool and different from time to time, but the purpose behind it sickens me.
Don't get me wrong, when I saw the team bust through the banner against Auburn donning the black jerseys for the first time, I shed tears. Not just because it was different, but because my Dawgs looked excited and hungry, and that spark is needed from every once in a while.
Here we sit, two seasons later, after another blistering loss to the Gators. Not only did we have to watch as Tim Tebow broke our heroe's record (it only took him like 13 extra games), but we had to see possibly the most atrocious excuse for a uniform I've seen this side of Oregon.
People have defended the "Black Hats" by saying, "New uniform schemes excite teams for big games." My response is, why does Georgia need anything else to excite them to play the Florida's, Alabama's, and Auburn's of the world?
Since when is playing a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Georgia Bulldogs, Auburn Tigers

Based on the FEI, Georgia Ranked 51st

We all know the Georgia Bulldogs are not a very good team right now. Their record speaks for itself. But do you want to know just how bad they are? No need for you to break out the old spreadsheet. The guys over at Football Outsiders list some very "Innovative Statistics" and have done the number-crunching for us. Georgia comes in at 51st. That is just plain awful, but not as bad as our rankings in penalties/game, yards/game, turnovers, total offense, scoring offense, total defense and scoring defense .
So cheer up Dawg Nation, things are not as bad as they look, on paper at least. FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Innovative Statistics, Intelligent Analysis | FEI COLLEGE FOOTBALL RATINGS 2009

The Fremeau Efficiency Index (FEI) considers each of the nearly 20,000 possessions every season in major college football. All drives are filtered to eliminate first-half clock-kills and end-of-game garbage drives and scores. A scoring rate analysis of the remaining possessions then determines the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Georgia Bulldogs

To Bowl or Not to Bowl: The Bulldogs End of Season Outlook

The Georgia Bulldogs (4-4) have four left to play. Two is the magic number. The Bulldogs have to win two in order to become bowl eligible. The schedule reads Tennessee Tech, Auburn, Kentucky, and the propeller heads. Winning two, unfortunately, is no given at this point. Given that the ball "hasn't bounced our way" and our coaches are not tracking how the ball bounces as a statistic, I am quite concerned. With so much riding on how the ball bounces, I am afraid the randomness of it all doesn't bode well for us. Seriously, when a staff is citing stats on the direction of bouncing footballs, the same staff that calls for directional kicks, what are we to think? Black pants and hats are needed to fire a team up to play their biggest conference rival.
Huh? Perhaps the most consistent offensive player no named AJ Green is benched for missing a block. The quarterback that is zero for sunlight and has thrown a pick in every game, three against Florida, is set to take the field on what is ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Georgia Bulldogs, Florida Gators

Ranking The Georgia Bulldogs' Uniforms

In what appears to have become my biweekly critique of sports dress code, this week's Georgia-Florida helmet argument has sparked me to take a look back at all of the different looks Georgia has sported over the years.

Yes, Georgia's uniform is a traditional one, but they actually have made plenty of changes in their uniforms that have made a difference. More notably, they have changed up their attire on occasions before against Florida.

Against the Gators, Georgia is 0-2 when sporting a black garment. Despite common chatter of disdain, Georgia is still 2-1 in those black jerseys. But, let us move away from trying to associate attire with performance, and just contrast what Georgia wore on Saturday vs. the rest.

Win or lose, I do not think those uniforms were up to snuff. Take a look.
Why I Want To Say Goodbye to 2009

Life goes by faster than the speed of light, and I'm usually the first to say enjoy the moments that you have, but 2009 has been a thorn in my flesh and I'm ready to say good riddance. It has been, to say the least, the most horrible year of football in the history of football. It has been a big pile of pain, mixed with some heartache, and stirred together with mass chaos. It has been a year I'd like to forget.
For starters, I set myself up for failure where my Bulldawgs are concerned. I, the self-proclaimed "Bulldawg Homer," failed to buy into the low expectations thrown around before the season started, and therefore fell apart when the harsh reality began to set in. I knew the schedule wasn't favorable, I knew twe had lost about $100 million worth of talent, but somewhere in my deluded mind I reasoned that Georgia was just, well, Georgia, and we don't have bad years. I was wrong.
Then comes the scolding and bashing from some of the Bulldawg fan base. I'll be the first to admit in the heat of ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Georgia Bulldogs

For Georgia and Aaron Murray the Future Should Be Now

This is really hard for me. I have been a supporter of Joe Cox all season long. I was glad that we had Joe to step in when Matthew Stafford left for the NFL. I believed that Joe would step in and lead this team to nine, maybe even ten wins.
I do not believe that you can lay all of the problems with the 2009 version of the Georgia Bulldogs at the feet of Joe Cox. Joe has been a big reason that we have four wins. Unfortunately, he has also contributed to the four losses.
The numbers show a slow and steady decline since the shootouts with South Carolina and Arkansas. The 12 interceptions are unacceptable. The 57% completion percentage should be better.
For what ever the reason, Joe has not got the job done when we needed him the most.
The running game, the offensive line, the curious play calling have all played a part in turning this offensive into a very average one. Without AJ Green it is conceivable that the Dawgs could easily be 1-7 right now.
Yesterday, Mark Richt announced at his weekly ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Aaron Murray, Georgia Bulldogs, Mark Richt

As a Dawgs fan, it has been a long season already. The systemic failures of this team are a textbook case of what happens with poor coaching and team morale. Aside from the performances of a few individual players, the Georgia Bulldogs look to all the world, like a third world nation on the verge of implosion. As a Dawgs fan, you may rest assured that those words you just read, did not come easily or frivolously. They are not the result of mere vanity or poor sportsmanship. They are from the heart of someone who feels the painful slice of this blade of honesty that cuts both ways. But, it is just a game, right? We can just as easily now go back to our lives knowing that this minor hiccup will not mean anything beyond the score of a contest that is one of many that has already come and many yet to come (Deep breath!). Well, that is what I told myself before sitting to bang out this postmortem. And for a few brief moments, it did help. It reminded me that I really do have more important things to ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Georgia Bulldogs, Mark Richt

Georgia-Florida Preview: Can The Bulldogs Dance On The Gators Again?

One of the greatest spectacles in all of college football convenes on Saturday afternoon when Georgia and Florida meet in Jacksonville. The No. 1 Gators come into this game stumbling a bit after three tough games against SEC West foes, but have survived all three to remain undefeated. Georgia had a bye week last week, but is suffering through a disappointing 4-3 campaign thus far. Back to that bye week because the team with it has won the last 13 times. UGA had one before their 2007 win. Vegas has installed the Gators as a 14.5 point favorite after opening up at 16. Three Keys For A Georgia Cover 1. Establish A Running Game Even as disappointing as Florida's offense has been this season, I think Georgia's has been even more disappointing. A big reason for this is the lack of running game where the Bulldogs rank last in the SEC at 108 ypg. If UGA wants to pull off the upset they have to establish the run like they did on their first drive in 2007. 2.
Can Georgia Beat Florida?

Could the Georgia Bulldogs really beat the Florida Gators on Saturday afternoon?
Or has the VFA just been drinking too much moonshine in an effort to pregame for The Cocktail Party That Shall Not Be Named Like That Lest We Encourage Binge Drinking Because God Forbid That Sort Of Thing Would Ever Happen At A College Football Game?
Listen, here's our rationale.

  1) Florida Has Been Awful for the Past 120 Minutes
If you haven't seen any of the Florida Gators last two games, where they snuck past the Arkansas Razorbacks thanks to an awful officials' call or two and then beat off the challenge of Mississippi State despite their star quarterback throwing two pick-sixes and playing dreadfully, then do.
And then ask yourself: "Is this really the best team in the Nation?" In fact, Florida hasn't really blown anyone out since they went on the road to Kentucky, and suddenly all the talk—from the romantics—has been about the Alabama Crimson Tide.

  2) Tim Tebow Isn't Himself
The hit in the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators, Georgia Bulldogs, Urban Meyer, Mark Richt

Tim Tebow Will Break Herschel Walker's Rushing TD Record This Weekend

Don't you find it ironic that Florida Gators QB Tim Tebow is about to break Herschel Walker's rushing TD record this weekend in Jacksonville, FL? Could this be the reason Tebow idled back some with his rushing TDs over the past few games?
I'm sorry, but there is something to this, and Coach Urban Meyer or Tim Tebow will never admit to it.
The Gator Nation is still fuming over that little stunt when the Georgia Bulldogs team charged the field after scoring first during the 2007 game. Yes, the Gators brought some revenge to the table last season with the 49-10 beatdown, but how poetic is it that this year a Florida Gators QB will break a record held by arguably the greatest Georgia Bulldogs football player while playing each other?
It's a beautiful thing.
Yes, I am a Gators fan. Yes, I graduated from the University of Florida. Yes, I despise the Georgia Bulldogs. And yes, I will cheer loudly when Tebow crosses the goal line to break Herschel Walker's record.
It's funny how Georgia fans still ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Tim Tebow, Florida Gators, Georgia Bulldogs

Did you hear the one about the Gator

FLORIDA: We don't just cheat in football.
Little Johnny runs up to his mother and says, "Mommy, mommy! I want to be a gator when I grow up!"Mom answers, "Now Johnny, you know you can't do both."
A guy walks into a bar and says, "Hey barkeep, did you ever hear the one about the Florida Gators?" Four huge men stand up and approach the man. One of them says, "We play football at UF, you wanna tell that joke to us?" The guy replies, "What? And have to explain it four times?"
What do you call an UF grad wearing a suit and tie? The defendant!
What is the definition of safe sex down in Gainesville? Placing signs on the animals that kick.
If you have a car containing a Gator wide receiver, a Gator linebacker, and a Gator defensive back, who is driving the car? The cop.
How many Gators does it take to tackle Herschel Walker? I don't know, but it's more than eleven!
A UGA grad, a LSU grad, and a Florida grad are waiting to be executed by ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators, Georgia Bulldogs
