The "What Could Have Been" Could Haunt Georgia Again

(How different would things be if we cut the 'Tech' off that jersey?)
Recruiting college sports is a funny thing. It's a quirky thing. It's a science, but possibly the most inexact one.
Coaches not only have to evaluate a player's physical tools or mental capacity, but also project their development, their potential upside, future value, and role within a college program.
Then they have to take all that, develop some sort of adequate cost-benefit rubric, and make decisions on what players to pursue, and how hard to pursue them. They do all of this, of course, with a rulebook thicker than a dictionary weighing them down and recruiting services offering fans an insider's glance into their work.
Mark Richt has long been a guy that's excelled in recruiting.
He goes toe-to-toe with every program in the nation, and has landed himself big-time names (Matthew Stafford, for example) and big-time classes (his overall hauls are rarely worse than top-15 material). Wisdom says—and wisdom is, to a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Mark Richt, Georgia Bulldogs, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Demetri McCamey Lifts Fighting Illini As They Hold Off Wofford 78-64

The Fighting Illini faced a tough match up in Wofford tonight, believe it or not.
Wofford had recently beat Georgia, so this game was not going to be easy.
The Illini started out not doing so well as Wofford could not miss a three. The Illini finally went on a run and kept it going until until the half.
D.J. Richardson hit four three-pointers in the first half as Wofford continuously hit threes as well.
Right before the half, there was about 1.8 seconds on the clock, and Illinois was inbounding near its basket. The score was tied at 39. The Illlini handed it off to McCamey, who turned around and hit a three to end the half to make the score 42-39.
This ended up being a big boost for the Illini's offense going in to the second half.
The Illini beat them by 11 in the second half bringing the final score to 78-64.
McCamey led all scorers in the game with 21 points. He also had four assists and four boards.
Mike Davis had yet another double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- Ricky McPhee, a walk-on until this year, scored a career-high 20 points to lead Georgia to a 79-58 win over North Carolina-Asheville on Tuesday night.

Upset of Georgia Tech Would Work Wonders for Georgia Bulldogs

It's hard to sit here and write this only two days removed from witnessing a gut-wrenching loss to Kentucky at Sanford Stadium. Naturally, Georgia's 6-5 record and third-place finish in the SEC East is not what I envisioned at the beginning of the season. (I actually had the Dawgs going 10-2...what was I thinking?)
Not only was it painful to see the seniors lose their last game in Sanford Stadium, it was painful to finally come to the realization that there is something seriously wrong with our football team.
Now I could go off on a rant about how we need to clean house and burn down the city of Athens. But I am not going to, nor do I want to do either of those things. I have left that job to the more radical parts of the so-called Bulldog "Fanbase" (which I was appalled to hear boo the team on multiple occasions Saturday).
I decided to write an article focusing on the upcoming game against archrival Georgia Tech this Saturday because I believe that is what our team is doing as well. Am I going ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Georgia Bulldogs, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Mark Richt

SEC Thoughts: Georgia Is Officially The Most Disappointing Team

Another good week of college football is wrapped up and I'm saddened by the realization that just two weeks remain in the regular season. It was also a good week picking games again. I went 8-1 straight up and 6-3 against the spread. Here are my thoughts on the week that was in the SEC and around the nation. I really wanted to pick Kentucky for the win straight up (my numbers told me UK by two), but the Randall Cobb injury situation scared me off. Turnovers killed Georgia again. UGA out gained Kentucky by 227 yards and threw for more yards (291) than the Wildcats had total. You have to feel for a guy like Joe Cox who waited four years for his turn and then played so poorly on senior night. He finished with 12 for 30 passing and two interceptions. Georgia has a highly touted freshman it is redshirting this season at QB. I would think Mark Richt would have learned his lesson with Knowshon Moreno and played the true freshman Aaron Murray if he was going to have a big impact on the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Georgia Bulldogs

Dawgs Roll Over...and We Aren't Talkin' Doggie Tricks

Is it not ironic that we lost our greatest radio personality and two UGAs during these sour past two years?
I've tried to be nice. I've tried to be loyal. I've tried to run off the critics.
I credit myself with a pretty solid history of keeping optimistic with my favorite teams, even in the toughest times. I stayed relaxed with the 2006 Georgia Bulldogs, who went 9-4 with a freshman quarterback.
I stayed relaxed with my 2003 Atlanta Falcons as I watched every game of their 5-11 season. This season, I have tried so hard to keep my head up as my Dawgs continued to plummet downward.
But after tonight's loss to the Kentucky Wildcats, the Cats' first win in Sanford Stadium since 1967, my faith is completely gone.
Something is extremely wrong with Georgia football. I took some time to really think about this team and what has happened since the turn of the century.
In 2002, the Dawgs were the best team in the country in my opinion, and Richt was the captain of the ship.
But, Richt did not ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Georgia Bulldogs, Mark Richt

Quarterback Class of 2006: How Have Their Careers Fared?

Many of the members of the class of 2006 will be exiting stage left at season's end. A couple of them, Matthew Stafford and Nate Davis, have already done as much and are no longer repping their respective universities with pride.

While others are still churning out yards and blazing trails of their own for the new breeds to follow.

As the 2009 college football season comes to an end, it seems fitting to see how the highly, and not so highly, touted high school boys of 2006 have done.

Some have excelled beyond their wildest dreams—Tim Tebow. While others have found it hard to make any true impact at all—Mitch Mustain.

All were at one point or another, considered to be one of the best at their respective position but Friday Night Light glory does not always translate into Saturday success.

Bulldog Fans Mourn Sudden Death Of UGA VII

The words my daughter spoke made me stop my car. She simply said, "Dad, UGA VII died?"
It was a question, not a comment. I stopped the car to take in what she had said.
"What? You must be reading something old. It said UGA VI not VII." But her reply only confirmed her initial comment.
She was surfing the net with the glorious piece of electronics known as the iPhone. Information at the touch of a screen. Updated 12 seconds earlier.
UGA VII had indeed passed away from a sudden heart attack.
Everyone in the car had the same thought.... I'm gonna cry!!
In a season of disappointment for Georgia fans, this may be the biggest slap in the face yet. To lose our beloved mascot at the young age of four is just enough to put many Dawg fans over the edge.
For those who do not understand the loss, just move on back to to the Quilty Pleasures Section of b/r and skip what is left of this article.
For those who love the Dawg nation, you understand what the feeling is tonight in Savannah, in Athens ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Georgia Bulldogs

R.I.P. UGA VII: Short But Sweet, 'Loran's Best' Left a Good Impression

The Georgia Bulldog nation got a shock to their collective system on Thursday evening as the news trickled slowly through the Twitter and AP news wires that Uga VII, also known as Loran's Best, had passed away.

The beloved white english bulldog was only four-years old and was finishing his second-season at the helm as Georgia's mascot—he took over on August 30, 2008.

He may now hold the sad distinction of being the Georgia Bulldog mascot with the shortest tenure but in his short stint as our trusty wearer of the 'G', he made us proud and sat watch over some very memorable moments on the football field.

In his memory, I have lifted a few of those very games so that we might not only reminisce on the greatness that was this little beauty from the Coastal City, but also remind us Dawg fans of just how wonderful a thing it is to be a Georgia Bulldog.
Setting The Georgia-Georgia Tech Rivalry Straight

I know the Dawgs (sorry for the misspelling Jacket fans) are preparing for Kentucky, not Georgia Tech, this weekend. But, I myself am already looking ahead to the Georgia vs. Georgia Tech game next weekend.
Why? Because for the first time this decade the Georgia-Georgia Tech game is the most anticipated game of the year--at least for me.
I live near Atlanta, and as a result of my location and my more often than not display of UGA paraphernalia I must deal with buzzing Georgia Tech fans on a daily basis.
This fall, however, I have dealt with way more buzzing than usual. When explaining this phenomenon to my father, who is a UGA grad and a longtime Bulldog, he told me that there are no worries.
He says, "Georgia Tech fans are like cicadas. They come out of the ground every seventeen years, make a lot of noise, and then die."
God forbid that the Tech fans actually die. A lot of my friends are Georgia Tech fans. But, it would be nice if the entire population could handle their success more ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Georgia Bulldogs, Mark Richt

SEC Starting Out Slow With Bad Hiccups!

Coming off a year where you only had three teams earn a spot in the NCAA tournament the last thing the SEC wanted was a slow start.
But, a little over a week into the season and the conference already has five losses with four to lesser opponents.
Mississippi St., Auburn, Arkansas, Alabama, and Georgia have all lost this year.
Arkansas did lose to a quality opponent in Louisville, but when you lose by 30 that is unacceptable.
With loses to Rider, Missouri State, Cornell, and Wofford, and a close call against Miami(OH) for the team believed to win the league Kentucky this could be a very long season for the conference.
The Conference is sitting at 17-5 for the season so far with LSU leading the way with a 3-0 record.
Earlier in the season players are rusty and you are trying to get the players adjusted to playing with each other if you have a young team. With that said at no time should you lose to an inferior opponent.
The SEC needs at least six teams to go dancing this year to give ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Kentucky Wildcats, Mississippi State Bulldogs, Georgia Bulldogs, Arkansas Razorbacks, Louisville Cardinals

Cameron Rundles made both ends of a 1-and-1 with 3.1 seconds remaining to give Wofford a 60-57 victory over Georgia on Tuesday. A desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer by Georgia's Trey Thompkins near the Bulldogs bench was no good, as the Terriers posted their first victory over Georgia in eight tries.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Georgia Bulldogs

Did Willie Martinez Save His Job Against Auburn?

Twelve minutes into Saturday night's game against Auburn, Willie Martinez and the Georgia Bulldogs' defense had reached their lowest point of the past five years.
In twelve minutes, the Auburn Tigers' offense had already scored twice on shockingly simple drives. A screen pass here. A dive play there. 14-0.
All the frustration from the last two years seemed to come to a climatic point. At that moment, it seemed nothing in the world could save Willie Martinez's job. Georgia's defense had been manhandled all year, and Auburn was acting out the same script.
But then, Georgia's defense did something it seemingly hasn't done in two years. They adjusted.
Having seen Auburn's offense work in those first twelve minutes, Georgia's defense made the necessary adjustments to effectively silence the Tigers for the remainder of the game and walk away with a 31-24 victory.
Georgia started putting pressure on Tigers' quarterback Chris Todd. The defensive ends started cutting off outside angles, giving time ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Auburn Tigers, Georgia Bulldogs, Mark Richt, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Five Things We Love About The Georgia-Auburn Rivalry

When Georgia and Auburn meet on the field there is normally something big at stake. SEC titles, unbeaten records or just bragging rights... it doesn't take much to get the blood pumping for this one. This is the "South's Oldest Rivalry" and it has lived up to its billing more often than not.

We could write a book on this great rivalry. The games, the coaches, the players and the fans all hold an important part on making this rivalry one of the most talked about in the country.

If you haven't been fortunate enough to see some of these games, I'm truly sorry. You have missed out.

But take a few minutes here today and get ready for the 113th meeting tomorrow. The records do not matter. The standings mean nothing.

This is Auburn and Georgia. This is civil war. Brother vs brother, cousin vs cousin and neighbor vs neighbor.

It might just get ugly!
