Creature Vs. Creature: Indiana Faces Purdue in the Bucket Game

After an extremely up and down season for both teams, Purdue and Indiana finish their seasons this Saturday at 3:30 PM in Bloomington, Indiana.
Indiana began the season winning their first three games, but they have lost seven of their last eight games and have nothing left to play for but pride and the Old Oaken Bucket, although that is big enough of a thing to play for.
Purdue won their first game against Toledo before losing five in a row. However, they had a massive upset over Ohio State to break that losing streak and are 2-2 since that game. They are now out of bowl contention, though, after losing a close one last week to Michigan State.
The Hoosiers last year were demolished in the Bucket game, losing 62-10 to Purdue in West Lafayette, but this season they are a much better team.
The offense has been improved greatly, with junior QB Ben Chappell taking the reins and putting up a great year statistically, throwing for 2,675 yards, a 63 percent completion rate, 15 touchdowns, and a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Indiana Hoosiers, Purdue Boilermakers

Tom Crean Gets His Hoosiers in Line: Indiana's Rotation Is Emerging

The Indiana University men's basketball team saw their undefeated season end tonight, as the Rebels of Mississippi spotted the Hoosiers an early nine-point lead before settling down and dominating in the school's first round Puerto Rico Tip-Off matchup. Indiana led 20-11 at the 14:14 mark but relinquished the lead just four minutes later and eventually fell 89-71. At 2-1, Tom Crean and the youthful Hoosiers have begun to settle into the grind of a major-conference schedule. As fans, we're starting to figure out who the stars are, and who will be relegated to a season spent wearing the candy-striped pants and chatting with assistant coaches. Let's take a look at the Hoosiers' rotation as it stands today.
Point Guard: Jeremiah Rivers Doc's kid has started all three games (Crean has gone with the same starting five thus far), but before Ole Miss he was pretty quiet on the stat sheet, totaling just eight points and a 9:8 assist:turnover ratio in heavy minutes. Tonight, we saw why ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Indiana Hoosiers, Tom Crean

Derek Elston Can Ball: The Freshman from Tipton Indiana Is Turning Heads

Raise your hand if you looked at the list of recruits coming in as freshman for the 2009-2010 season, and you thought to yourself, "Who is Derek Elston?"
If your hand is raised, you are not alone.
The Tipton, IN native was praised by coach Tom Crean before the season saying he would turn a lot of heads.
And boy was Crean right.
So far, in the first two games of the season, Elston has been a key performer coming off the bench, and has helped the Hoosiers to a 2-0 start.
In the first game, verses Howard University, Elston was 6/7 shooting for 14 points and three rebounds in 14 minutes.
And in the second game, against USC-Upstate, he was 4/6 shooting for 10 points, while collecting eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
While being 6'9" and 220 lbs, Elston is not limited to being a power forward.
He has shown that he can drive the lane and make incredibly athletic layups, as well as popping out behind the arc and draining threes.
And he also showed that he can make steals, as ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Indiana Hoosiers

Indiana's Chance at Bowl Game Gone with Latest Loss

This isn't the first time the Hoosiers have dominated in the first half, only to let the opposing team come back and win.
Yet, it is just as hard to take.
Only one year removed from a 3-9 season, filled with injuries, lack of leadership, and terrible defense, the Hoosiers are now 4-7 and dangerously close to finishing two seasons in a row with no wins in their final five games.
This year's Hoosiers are certainly better than last years team, yet they still can't find a way to finish games.
If any song could define the Hoosiers season, it would be "Build Me Up Buttercup" by the Foundations. The Hoosiers start off so well and build us up in excitement, that maybe they will win. But then they just let us down in the rest of the game.
In their last four games, the Hoosiers have started off with a bang, scoring at least a touchdown in their first possession, and sometimes going up 10 to 14 points.
But every time, the Hoosiers would let the opponent get back in the game and would end up ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Indiana Hoosiers, Penn State Nittany Lions

The Big Ten confernces is one of the strongest in the nation, besides the ACC.
The Big Ten comes in with six teams ranked in the Preasons AP Division 1 Top Twenty-Five Poll.

With Michigan State ranked second in the nation they are looking to come out strong and win a Conference title and go back to Final Four for the second year in a row.
One team not in the polls was 2009 NIT champions Penn State Nittny Lions.

Going to the bottom of the list the Hoosiers of Indiana are looking to get to double digits wins in the '09-'10 season.
The Week Ahead: Hoosiers can teach us a lot

We know the direction Indiana basketball is traveling in its second year out from the program's implosion: forward.

We'll know a bit more about how fast the Hoosiers are moving after their trip to the Puerto Rico Tip-Off later in the week.

IU is in its second season under Tom Crean, who took over a program without a scholarship player after NCAA sanctions drove out former coach Kelvin Sampson, and all the Hoosiers' regulars followed. The roster Crean was able to scrape together managed six victories in 2008-09.

So the Hoosiers already are one-sixth of the way to matching last season's total. What's most interesting about their opening win over Howard, though, is that freshmen played 46 percent of the minutes and produced 56 percent of the points for IU.

The team's three leading scorers after one game are guard Maurice Creek (17) and forwards Christian Watford and Derek Elston (14 each). That's hardly a sufficient sample size to make definitive conclusions, but it could be a sign that the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Indiana Hoosiers

Regular Season Begins For The Hoosiers Vs The Howard Bison Tonight

Tonight, the Indiana Hoosiers play their first official game of the 2009-2010 season.
The Hoosiers host the Howard Bison, a member of the MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference).
Indiana comes into tonight's matchup after two exhibition games versus Grace College and St. Josephs (Indiana). Both games were easy wins and good tuneups to the start of the regular season.
The Bison also are playing their first game of the season and come off a 64-47 win in an exhibition vs Marymount.
The Hoosiers have received good outputs from their new freshman class in the first two games. Forward Christian Watford finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds in the game versus Grace College, and guard Maurice Creek finished with 16 points and 7 rebounds in a coming-out game.
Along with the new freshmen, junior transfer Jeremiah Rivers is now eligible to play basketball again. After such a long wait and having to endure sitting on the bench last season, Rivers is ready to contribute to the Hoosiers immediately.
Indiana Basketball Early Season Guide: How Will Hoosiers Fare Out of Conference?

Between now and New Year's Eve, the fledgling Indiana Hoosiers basketball team will face 10 opponents ranging from pushovers (hello, Bryant University!) to a possible powerhouse (rival Kentucky).
After opening the season with exhibition wins over Grace College and St. Joseph's (Indiana), it's time to find out just how good this youthful team can be. Let's take a look at IU's first 12 games of 2009-10.
Nov. 13: Howard The Bison hail from the MEAC and finished last year with an 8-23 record reminiscent of IU's own 6-25. Their leading scorer from last year, Eugene Myatt, is no longer on the roster. Belgian junior forward Kandi Mukole and Indianapolis native Kyle Riley, a guard, will lead the attack, but I expect this one to be a blowout at Assembly Hall.
PROJECTION: Indiana cruises, 1-0
Nov. 16: USC Upstate In their third year as a D-I program, the Spartans of Spartanburg, SC don't appear to pose much of a threat. However, they do have a cool media guide available ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Indiana Hoosiers

Indiana Fails to Stop Badger Running Game, Loses 31-28

It was a well played game for the Hoosiers.
For the first time in three games, the Indiana Hoosiers actually put together a good effort for four quarters.
However, the injuries to their defense showed, and they were unable to stop the running game of the Wisconsin Badgers.
Wisconsin finished with 294 yards on the ground, and the duo of John Clay, and Montee Ball, were running with ease all day.
Clay finished with 134 yards, and a touchdown on 15 carries, despite missing the whole second half with concussion symptoms.
And Montee Ball, a true freshman, filled in greatly, and ran for 115 yards on 27 carries, and two touchdowns.
But the Hoosiers never gave up, and stayed in the game the whole way through.
Ben Chappell had a great game, throwing for 323 yards and three touchdowns, although he had two interceptions.
However, the Hoosier offense became extremely predictable after Darius Willis went down early, and the Wisconsin defense knew they would pass almost all of the time.

B10 Power Rankings (Week 11) Part Two: The Bad, and the Ugly

After running down the Top Five in Great Lakes/Cornfields 12 Football, it's time to get to the rest of the conference! If there's a consistent theme to these squad's seasons, it's inconsistency. Some are emerging from awfulness towards respectability, while others are grimly sliding towards oblivion. Keep in mind, three of these schools will probably be going bowling. 6. Michigan State (5-5, 3-3) State's season highlight so far was a 24-14 win against Northwestern at home. They recovered nicely from their three-game losing streak against Central Michigan, Notre Dame (barely), and Michigan (barely, again), but after losing to Iowa, and Minnesota in the last three weeks, find themselves right back in limbo. Quarterback Kirk Cousins has had a showcase season, throwing for 2,097 yards, and fourteen touchdowns, but MSU's running game has not kept up at all. Losing Javon Ringer to the NFL really hurt, as none of his replacements have more than 400 yards. Meanwhile, the defense has been ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Indiana Hoosiers

Wisconsin Suspends Maurice Moore Indefinitely

The University of Wisconsin has suspended junior wide receiver Maurice Moore after he was arrested early Sunday morning for operating under the influence.
Moore was involved in a one-car accident on Regent Street, near Camp Randall Stadium, and was hospitalized for minor injuries.
So far this season, Moore has caught three passes for 45 yards. He also saw action as a kick returner against Indiana after David Gilreath's struggles this year culminated in a muffed punt turnover.
Last year Moore caught five passes for 61 yards.
Next up for Wisconsin is Michigan on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. The Badgers will be going for their eighth win of the year, one more than last year's total.

Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema says starting tailback John Clay should be back at practice Tuesday and ready to play against Michigan on Saturday. Bielema said Monday that Clay showed signs of having a concussion during the Indiana game and also felt sick to his stomach. Bielema says he probably could have returned for the second half, but was held back as a precaution.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Wisconsin Badgers, Michigan Wolverines, Bret Bielema, Indiana Hoosiers

College basketball preview: Year of the blueblood

                    Mike DeCourcy

When a spectacular young basketball prospect named Harrison Barnes was arranging an official recruiting visit to North Carolina, the Tar Heels did not ask that he time his visit for a big fall weekend when thousands of fans bleeding powder-blue school spirit would be gathered to pay homage to the football team. No, they brought him to see some Carolina alumni play pickup hoops.

Vince Carter was there, and so were Jerry Stackhouse and Antawn Jamison and Raymond Felton and Brandan Wright and Marvin Williams — and 21,750 spectators, Michael Jordan among them, cheering as though the Tar Heels were drilling Duke in early March.

If you want to understand why North Carolina is a college basketball blueblood, what better picture could we paint?
