For most of this season, the Ball State football team has had its talent underestimated, its schedule ridiculed, and its name become synonymous with the word "overrated." Oh sure, the Cardinals earned a token of respect after their nationally televised win over Navy early in the season, but that was soon followed by "Wait until IU." After dismantling the Hoosiers in Bloomington, instead of hearing what a good win it was over a BCS team, we heard how terrible Indiana must be. After rattling off six wins over MAC teams and Western Kentucky, we heard "wait until you play Central Michigan." After dispatching CMU in Mt. Pleasant, the warning was changed slightly to "wait until Western Michigan." We waited, and Ball State did what it's done all year long—won. Indiana freshman guard Verdell Jones III was taken off the court on a stretcher with an injury in Sunday's basketball game against Cornell. The nature of the injury wasn't immediately known. Jones' head appeared to strike the shoulder of Cornell center Jeff Foote on a hard pick near midcourt during the first half. Jones was on the court several minutes before being strapped to the stretcher and wheeled out.

Friday's loss was not devastating, by any means. As I wrote , I thought highly of Baylor's backcourt. I didn't expect the Bears to shoot 45 percent from downtown, though, and the lead they built early in the second half proved to be too difficult for Arizona State to overcome. Regardless, I am back on the horse as they say, and there are two games I like today. Cornell (-3) at Indiana was a game I was anticipating since Indiana's last game. Cornell was an NCAA Tournament team last year and returns all its key players. As I've written in the past, I just don't believe Indiana has the personnel to compete with an experienced, talented team, even if that team is from the Ivy League. I'm also taking Patty Mills and Saint Mary's (-5) against Providence. In a consolation game in Anaheim, I just don't see the Friars scoring enough, particularly from the outside, to keep it too close with a very good St. Mary's squad. The Friars haven't beaten a quality team yet, and I don't expect them to tonight. ...

After Indiana's big-time loss at the hands of St. Joseph's, the Hoosiers were seen on ESPN observing the semi-finals game between No. 1 North Carolina and Oregon. Announcers said that Tom Crean had his team there to see a good team play. The Hoosiers, now 3-2, clearly needed the education if they hope to improve this season. Hoosier fans were not sure what to expect coming into the season, but now Crean's team has indicated that it will indeed be a long season in Bloomington. Quarterfinals: No. 8 Notre Dame 88, IU 50 The very talented Irish wasted no time in putting away the Hoosiers, going on a 9-0 run near the beginning of the game to take an 11-4 lead. Sometimes you bet on a team, and sometimes you bet against a team. Yesterday , I took St. Joseph's over Indiana, and it wasn't because I was particularly high on the Hawks. I just know that the Hoosiers are really bad. My pick was a winner as St. Joe's (-10) cruised to a 26-point victory. As I've said before, I believe coach Tom Crean will restore the program, however it will take time. Until I see some larger spreads, I will continue to bet against Indiana. Today I like Blake Griffin and the Oklahoma Sooners giving four to the University of Alabama. I will preview the match-up in this article . I expected Oklahoma to get to the finals when the tournament began, and I'm going to stick with my prediction. My bet is that Oklahoma will win by at least five points tonight. Kelvin Sampson: Let This Be a Lesson

I sincerely hope that universities across the country have learned a valuable lesson from the Indiana Hoosiers and the sanctions that were issued against their athletics department and against former coach Kelvin Sampson. Now that the NCAA has handed down a decision that puts IU on probation for three years and keeps Sampson out of NCAA coaching for at least five years, it is time to move on. But it won't be easy for IU, which was a top ten men's team at one point last season. The Hoosiers lost all but two of their players, two of their top recruits, and have started this season 2-2 including two losses by at least thirty points in the last two evenings of the Maui Invitational. The rest of the way won't be easy either as the Hoosiers are projected to continue to struggle before they improve within the next few years. The NCAA today slapped former Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson with a five-year show cause penalty - insuring he can never coach at another college program for that period of time - and upheld the school’s self-imposed three-year probation in the wake of a widening scandal involving more than 100 improper telephone contracts to recruits by the head coach and his assistants. But the Hoosiers were spared any post season sanctions, TV or any more scholarship limitations. The NCAA also slapped former assistant Robbie Senderhoff, who is now working on staff at Kent State, with a three-year show-cause penalty for his role in the scandal, although Kent Athletic Director Laing Kennedy did not seem willing to relieve him of his duties. The governing body on Tuesday imposed stiff penalties on former coach Kelvin Sampson and an assistant. Yesterday was a good day. I went 3-1, which included my Pick of the Day, Notre Dame (-15) against an overmatched Indiana team. My only bet for today once again involves the Hoosiers. Until they show me otherwise, I just don't have a reason to believe they can compete with a quality team. Of course after last night's 68-50 loss to Texas, calling IU's opponent, Saint Joseph's, "a quality team," is debatable. Friday was a tough day, as I won USC easily but a missed free throw and "meaningless" lay-up cost me in the Tennessee game, as the Vols (-10.5) only won by 10. But that's gambling, as they say. Going .500 only costs me the juice and today's schedule has provided several favorable lines. I will start with the earliest game. Texas -10 vs. Saint Joe's, 3:00, ESPN2: St. Joe's is coming off a loss to Holy Cross, so I figure the seventh-ranked Longhorns should win by at least 15. The game is in Hawaii as part of the Maui Invitational, but that does not scare me nearly as much as if it were in, say, Puerto Rico . Notre Dame -15 vs. Indiana, 5:30, ESPN2: Also in Maui, the No. 8 Irish get their first real test of the season. That's what I'd be writing if this was your typical Indiana team. With a 62-10 embarrassment of the hapless Indiana Hoosiers at Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette, Indiana today, the Purdue Boilermakers (4-8, 2-6) sent departing head coach Joe Tiller out in the best of styles. In a game that could easily be described as hilarious, and not just satisfying, even for a Boilermaker fan base used to taking delight in the ineptitude of the Hoosiers, and that saw Indiana (3-9, 1-7) at one point failing to field a kickoff in the first half (the unintentional onside kick is a rare treat), Tiller's team looked briefly like the "basketball on grass" Boilers that Tiller brought to life at Purdue upon his arrival in 1997.
