Going Bowlin': Where Are the Badgers Headed?

With the Big Ten season ending on Saturday, most teams are looking ahead to possible bowl match-ups.
Wisconsin still has to travel to Hawaii in two weeks, but they too can start to scout for their bowl game because their game against the Warriors shouldn't make a difference in what invitation they receive.
With their loss to Northwestern on Saturday, Hawaii is pretty much a meaningless game.
If they had beaten Northwestern, they would have had the opportunity to go for 10 wins and an outside shot at a BCS bowl, but that all went down the drain Saturday afternoon in Evanston.
A pathetic defense and costly mistakes ended any hopes of that.
After that game, my outlook on the Badgers is pretty gloomy. Their defense hasn't improved all year and although their offense is effective, it seems as though they sputter in clutch situations.
However, at 8-3 they still have a chance to get a good bowl game, and a win against Hawaii would definitely help their confidence going into bowl season.

Big Weekend for Hawkeyes Gets Bigger with Recruiting Visits

The Iowa Hawkeyes are getting ready for the biggest weekend of their season thus far. A home game against Minnesota is the last chance they have to potentially earn a bid for a share of the Big Ten title after two straight losses to Ohio State and Northwestern.
Now, arguably the biggest weekend of the season just got a little bit bigger.
Seantrel Henderson, the nation's top prospect according to Rivals.com, will be visiting Iowa City this weekend to watch the Hawkeyes finish out their regular season against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
It does not end there.
Four-star tight end prospect C.J. Fiedorowicz, a 6'7" pass catching specialist out of Illinois, will also be making an appearance in Iowa City after already verbally committing to Illinois earlier this season.
Henderson, and offensive lineman out of St. Paul, MN is a massive offensive lineman prospect who has received offers from nearly every major program in the country.
At 6'8", he has the frame to grow and become a dominant ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Iowa Hawkeyes, Minnesota Golden Gophers, Illinois Fighting Illini, Ohio State Buckeyes

Buell's Eye: Week 12's College Football Picks

Week 12 features not only the greatest rivalry in College Football, but the greatest rivalry, filled with unmatchable history and tradition, in all of sports.
Last weekend saw the continuous onward march of the top teams, keeping all six undefeated programs' untainted record intact.
USC made history in all of the wrong ways.
Iowa ensured that they would not see a BCS Bowl this season after their 9-0 start with their second consecutive loss.
Houston, Arizona and South Florida all took huge steps backward, as well.
And, the Ohio State Buckeyes punched their ticket for yet another Rose Bowl appearance.
My worst week, so far, occurred in Week 11 with a 16-6 record, leading to my 184-46 record overall.
This weekend, look for three more upsets to take place while Oregon looks to meet up with Ohio State in a run for the roses, and let the first of the major rivalries begin!

Hayes' Hot Seat: Millions don't alleviate coaches' stress

Sporting News' Matt Hayes analyzes those feeling the heat heading into Week 12.
1. A coach's life
So I've got this guy who emails me every so often, more frequently in previous years but less so this fall.
It seems as though the target of his vitriol—Dave Wannstedt—is out of range. For now, anyway.
After Pitt blew a 14-point lead against N.C. State in September and lost for the only time this season, his email was succinct and to the point: Wannstedt will ruin Pitt like he ruined the Bears and Dolphins.
It's a brutal business, people. Coaches are paid millions, but that cash can't salve the mental anguish coaching families go through while their husband or father is judged by anyone and everyone.
Every. Single. Day.
"It's where we are in this business," Texas coach Mack Brown told me earlier this season. "Winning, unfortunately, is all that matters."
Before we go further, spare me the argument that you'd take the millions to take the abuse, too. Ohio State and Iowa lived up to it's billing as "the Clash of the Titans," being decided on a field goal in overtime. As long as Ohio State wins out, they've clinched a trip to the Rose Bowl.
Penn State and Wisconsin continued to roll, and Indiana, Purdue and Michigan were knocked from bowl contention.
This week several teams are jockeying for bowl position, rather than eligibility.

  Minnesota Golden Gophers (6-5), (3-4) @ No. 13 Iowa Hawkeyes (9-2), (5-2) 12:00 ESPN
The Gophers should not even be bowl eligible. I don't think a win over a team named the Jackrabbits should qualify, but I don't have a say in the matter.
Iowa will have a hard time getting up for this game, and it will be closer than expected.
  Gophers 20, Hawkeyes 24

  No. 10 Ohio State Buckeyes (9-2), (6-1) @ Michigan ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ohio State Buckeyes, Wisconsin Badgers, Iowa Hawkeyes, Michigan Wolverines, Penn State Nittany Lions

Iowa Basketball Starts with Loss for First Time in 33 Seasons

Things aren't looking so great for the Iowa men's basketball team.
The Hawkeyes hadn't lost a home opener since 1962, but that changed Sunday night in a 62-50 loss to Texas-San Antonio.
This is the first time Iowa has started a season with a loss since a 79-78 defeat to Iowa State during the 1977-78 season.
In a defensive battle with a more experienced team, the Hawkeyes struggled to get anything going on offense. Iowa shot just 34 percent from the field.
Matt Gatens and Anthony Tucker, two of Iowa's returning players from last year, were a combined four out of 19 shooting.
The Hawkeyes had to rely on Freshmen Eric May and Cully Payne for their scoring needs. May came off the bench to score a team-high 13 points in his college debut. Payne added 12 points of his own, scoring three of the Hawkeyes' five three-pointers.
Iowa trailed for most of the game, partially due to their dismal 18.5 percent shooting from beyond the three-point line.
"Defensively, we were good," Payne told ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Iowa Hawkeyes

The Dynasty Continues: Barclay, Saine Send Buckeyes Back to Pasadena

When the Iowa Hawkeyes came to Columbus, the most unlikely man on either squad, K Devin Barclay, the 26-year-old former MLS player, was the hero that sent Ohio State to Pasadena.
It's a story that has been talked about for days now, but don't forget the other 60 minutes of a game that many people have considered one of the best of 2009, especially the fourth quarter.
In that big fourth quarter, both teams combined for 28 points and one-upped each other.
Everything from Dan Herron's TD run out of what I will call the "Wild Nut" offense to Derrell Johnson-Koulianos' kickoff return after initially bobbling the catch only added to what many have called an instant classic.
But anyone who followed Iowa football thought that even down 24-10 with all the momentum on the side of the Buckeyes, they had a shot.
Sure enough, QB James Vandenburg's TD pass to WR Marvin McNutt validated those hopes and had Buckeye fans thinking, "Here we go again."
But with a big third down sack in OT, all that had to ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ohio State Buckeyes, Iowa Hawkeyes

Ohio St. ends key stretch vs. Michigan (AP)

Ohio State had to beat Penn State to stay in the Big Ten race. The next week the Buckeyes needed to beat Iowa to win the conference and go to the Rose Bowl. With those missions accomplished the last two weeks, the ninth-ranked Buckeyes now face another big game against archrival Michigan on Saturday. What's on the line for Ohio State this week?

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ohio State Buckeyes, Michigan Wolverines, Penn State Nittany Lions, Iowa Hawkeyes

The All-Big Ten: Defense

The end of another football season is approaching, and most Big Ten teams have their last regular season game this weekend. That means it's time to start compiling the All-Big Ten lists.

Since this year appears to be the Year of the Defense in the Big Ten, it seemed fitting to start off with a list of the top defensive players in the conference.

Narrowing the list down to a top twelve all-conference team was no easy task, as a number of players around the Big Ten have stepped up big this year. Hence the longer-than-average list of honorable mentions at the end. Nevertheless, the list had to be objectively compiled.

So, without further ado, here is the All-Big Ten Defense...
The Big Ten, Sam Brownlee and the Ineptitude of National Sports Media

I'm sure my fellow Hawkeye fans recall Sam Brownlee, the walk-on tailback from Emmetsburg, Iowa, who, in 2004, was thrust into a starting role when the football gods took some twisted vengeance on Iowa running backs and tore up all of their ACLs.
Needless to say, Sam Brownlee was hardly the second coming of Earl Campbell. However, he didn't fumble the ball in over 100 touches, and picked up his blocking assignments. Meanwhile, Drew Tate worked some sort of magic, the Iowa defense destroyed everything in its path and somehow, with the worst rushing attack in the country, Iowa secured a co-Big Ten championship and a 9-2 record.
Hawkeye fans appreciated Brownlee, but knew that he would not touch the two-deep in 2005. In fact, I have to believe that anybody that followed national football on any level knew that.
Yet, I recall reading an article in a nationally distributed 2005 preseason college football rag that assumed that Brownlee would be the starting tailback that year, and made its prediction ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Iowa Hawkeyes

Play of the day: Three plays save Buckeyes' season

Before the weekend, Ohio State's seven most recent wins all had come by at least 17 points. But the Buckeyes stuffed a season's worth of drama into Saturday evening, when they withstood Iowa's fourth-quarter comeback to win 27-24 in overtime. Three plays in the extra session saved the Buckeyes' season and sent them to the Rose Bowl. Here's a look at the critical snaps.
Splitlers' stand
Iowa started overtime on offense, and quarterback James Vandenberg threw incomplete on first down. The Hawkeyes showed run on second down with an overloaded formation—two receivers, tight end Tony Moeaki and fullback Brett Morse all lined up right. The Buckeyes responded with eight defenders close to the line. Afterward, though, they'd say their true advantage came from talk in the huddle before this play.
"We said, 'This is it,' " Buckeyes linebacker Austin Spitler said. "The Big Ten championship and the Rose Bowl provide plenty of motivation. We knew we needed a stop." Spitler provided ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ohio State Buckeyes, Iowa Hawkeyes

Terrelle Pryor: 'We really didn't have to pass the ball'

Going to Michigan with his teammates? That's all the love Terrelle Pryor needs.
College start No. 21 for Terrelle Pryor delivered Big Ten championship No. 2. And Ohio State's sophomore quarterback says that's all that matter, despite all the hoopla surrounding his career. Pryor, who was 14-of-17 passing for 93 yards in OSU's 27-24 overtime win over Iowa, discussed the day and his season with reporters after the game:

Q: How did you feel like you did throwing the ball?
Terrelle Pryor : Yeah, what was the percentage?

  Q: 14-of-17.
TP: Yeah, it's about taking check downs and not worrying about the big play. Coach Tressel and his staff, especially (offensive coordinator Jim Bollman), they came up with a good game plan. We really didn't have to attack them because we were getting running lanes, and the linemen and blocking, and (Brandon) Saine and Boom (Herron) were running all over the place. We really didn't have to pass the ball.

Ohio State-Iowa: Buckeyes Get Emotional Roller Coaster Win

Drew Thurman (11:52 am) After a Devin Barclay 39-yard field goal in OT, fans got a chance to celebrate a bid to the Rose Bowl for the Buckeyes. Watching this game was far from easy though, and there were a lot of highs and lows throughout. Let's take a look at the game, and assess the Buckeyes for the future... Things that made me cheer 1) The running game for the Buckeyes was solid for the second week in a row. Brandon Saine recorded 103 yards and two touchdowns, while Boom Herron had 97 yards and a touchdown of his own.
People were talking about Jordan Hall starting just a few weeks ago, but you will not hear anyone bantering about that now. These two guys are now healthy, they are running the ball hard, and the offensive line is playing the way we hoped all season long.
Let's not forget either, they have racked up a ton of rushing yards the last two weeks against good defenses in Iowa and Penn State. Even more incredible is how predictable we have been.
Even girlfriends ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ohio State Buckeyes, Iowa Hawkeyes

A Letter to Iowa Fans....

Read my analysis on the game.
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/290473-now-that-was-a-game-wow
Dear Iowa fans,
I would like to say thank you for believing. I've watched many a football games and I know that it's hard to believe when there is no reason to.
Trust me, as a Buckeye fan, I know how hard it is to have faith when no one else does. I watched an Ohio State vs. Iowa game that I didn't expect.
Well not really. As I trolled all of the Iowa fan sites this week laughing at the Iowa posters that had hope.
I rolled my eyes as I watched the Big Ten Network's Anthony Herron still have hope that Iowa would have a chance in The Shoe .
I mean, honestly how could you have faith in this team. how could you have faith that a team that barely wins games would win one against the conference juggernaut. But I forgot the most important thing about football. The games aren't played in our minds.
In our minds, it is not fathomable for Iowa to come into Ohio State and play hard, but they did.

Iowa Hawkeyes Vs Ohio State Buckeyes College Football Picks

This weekend, the Big 10 will have the biggest game of the year in the conference. The winner of the game will have a spot reserved for them in the Rose Bowl. The loser will most likely go on to a lesser bowl and have to deal with a lot of disappointment.
The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Iowa Hawkeyes will square off at Ohio State this weekend and the stakes couldn’t be much higher. So what should we expect out of this one as far as Free College Football Picks go?
Iowa could be in trouble in this one. Last week they lost their first game of the season to Northwestern. In the game, they lost quarterback Ricky Stanzi for at least the next two weeks. That will hurt their offense quite a bit as he is a very solid player for them.
The Hawkeyes still have a solid team overall and a good defense especially. However, they have gone from national title contenders to perhaps not even in the Rose Bowl in a matter of a week. Therefore, things could definitely be better for Iowa.
Ohio State has come a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ohio State Buckeyes, Iowa Hawkeyes

Spotlight game: No. 15 Iowa at No. 10 Ohio State

  Place: Columbus, Ohio
Time: 3:30 p.m. ET, Saturday
TV: ABC
Line: Penn State by 4
Three reasons Iowa will win
  1. Playing Pryor: Ohio State coach Jim Tressel went the physiological route by raving about the Hawkeyes' defensive ends. "They're very long," he said. "They do a great job with their hands, and they're extremely strong in the hips." Thanks for the report, Dr. Tressel. There's no doubt Adrian Clayborn and Broderick Binns can dominate a game. Throw in Iowa's opportunistic back seven – the team's 19 interceptions lead Division I-A – and young, flappable Buckeyes QB Terrelle Pryor could be destined for another rough day.
  2. One more miracle: Last week's loss to Northwestern doesn't erase the litany of crazy plays that have left the Hawkeyes in position to win a conference championship. Take a minute to pick a favorite – the blocked field goals against Northern Iowa, the blocked punt at Penn State, the last-second touchdown at Michigan ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Iowa Hawkeyes, Ohio State Buckeyes

Dreaming Of Roses: Why Ohio State's Skill Players Will Snatch The Title

Saturday afternoon, Ohio State and Iowa meet in Columbus for the unofficial Big Ten Championship Game for the right to go to Pasadena.
The biggest story of the game is Iowa backup QB James Vandenburg starting over the injured Ricky Stanzi.
In Vandenburg's first prolonged experience last week against Northwestern, he could not carry Iowa past the Wildcats and eventually ended the miracle season.
Now it's on the Hawkeyes to pick up the pieces and rebound against a fast, stout defense that Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz referred to as an NFL-caliber unit.
But the matchup against Iowa will not just be won on the offensive and defensive line for both teams, but with the skill players and back seven of both teams.
In comparison, Ohio State has an edge in the skill position, especially in the RB department. Brandon Saine and Boom Herron are both back and 100 percent healthy, and both could run the OSU Wildcat offense if Terrelle Pryor's ankle is still a problem.
The WRs are about even as DeVier Posey ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ohio State Buckeyes, Iowa Hawkeyes

All the talk about how lucky Iowa was to win its first nine games brought back memories for Ohio State coach Jim Tressel. His 2002 team was subjected to the same putdowns. Some even called that squad, which won seven games by seven or fewer points, the Luckeyes. And all it did was win the national championship.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Iowa Hawkeyes, Ohio State Buckeyes, Jim Tressel

What We Learned: Notre Dame is starting to panic

Sporting News' Dave Curtis analyzes what Thursday's buzz means to college football.

      Corwin Brown: Middies play dirty.
Irish insanity
So on Veterans' Day, of all occasions, Notre Dame associate head coach Corwin Brown blows off steam about Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo's comments and questions the Mids' blocking techniques. Thing is, the frustration in Brown's voice only had a little to do with last Saturday.
The folks around the Fighting Irish can feel the pressure, and for the second straight year it's weighing on their emotions. Brown, remember, launched into a tirade last November, which included some gems about the de-emphasis of personal responsibility in American society.
Emerson, he isn't. What he is is a guy under duress helping to coach a team that tumbled at this time last year and sits one loss away from making a mayday call. And that's the big challenge facing Notre Dame and coach Charlie Weis this week: Can they hold things together?
They're likely to throw the ball ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Iowa Hawkeyes

Big Ten Power Rankings (Week 11): Buckeyes and Hawkeyes Battle for the Big Ten

The Big Ten Championship or at least the Rose Bowl participant will be decided when the Iowa Hawkeyes travel to Columbus to face the Ohio State Buckeyes.

An Ohio State win would secure the Buckeyes fifth straight Big Ten title and mark Jim Tressel's first trip to the Rose Bowl. If the Buckeye's win the following week in Ann Arbor, Ohio State will claim it's third outright Big Ten Championship in five years.

An Iowa win would give the Hawkeyes their first Rose Bowl game since Hayden Fry roamed the sidelines and a win over Minnestoa would give Iowa their first outright title since 1985.

Penn State and Wisconsin are still in contention to share the title, but the Rose Bowl dreams for those teams is lost.

The lobbying and jockeying for bowl position is starting to become common place and the Big Ten remains the only conference to have each of its member schools still mathematically in bowl consideration.

For Indiana, Michigan, Purdue, and Illinois the margin of error is very slim to non-existant. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ohio State Buckeyes, Iowa Hawkeyes, Jim Tressel

Big Ten Week 11 Preview and Predicitions

Isn't it strange how the Big Ten conference implodes around Ohio State each year?
Purdue beats OSU early in the year and opens the door to Penn State and Iowa. Penn State gets beat by Ohio State last week, and this week Iowa travels to Columbus to get similar treatment without its starting QB. Fun stuff!
At least Ohio State will get to see what a Rose Bowl is like.

   The Big Ten Championship Game
  Iowa at Ohio State
This game was much more interesting before Ricky Stanzi went down last week. Now it might as well be Ohio State playing Northwestern. The only way Iowa has a chance in this game is for their defense to create turnovers and points like they did when they traveled to Penn State. The line is huge in this one, and I think Vegas has it right—Iowa is getting 17 points.
  Iowa 10 OSU 31

  Indiana at Penn State
Penn State lost a chance at the Rose Bowl last week with their home loss to the Buckeyes. Indiana, which has played well in spurts this year, is going ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Penn State Nittany Lions, Ohio State Buckeyes, Purdue Boilermakers, Northwestern Wildcats, Iowa Hawkeyes

Pryor says Ohio State must avoid letdown (AP)

Terrelle Pryor has a warning for his Ohio State teammates: Forget last week and take Iowa seriously. Pryor said Wednesday night that the 10th-ranked Buckeyes must be careful not to follow last week's big victory over Penn State with a letdown in the winner-take-all Rose Bowl battle against No. 15 Iowa on Saturday.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Terrelle Pryor, Ohio State Buckeyes, Iowa Hawkeyes, Penn State Nittany Lions
