Kansas player: Coach Mangino has been inspiration

Two players defended embattled Kansas coach Mark Mangino on Tuesday as an internal investigation into claims that he mistreated his team entered its second week.

"We look to him to see how he reacts, and the way he's handled everything has been an inspiration to us," said safety Darrell Stuckey. "To see him go out there and be mentally tough - everything he's preached to us about being mentally tough, to see him live it out, means a lot.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Kansas Jayhawks, Mark Mangino, Darrell Stuckey

Missouri Tigers Enemy Intel: Examining the Kansas Jayhawks

This Saturday's Border Showdown between Missouri and Kansas hardly features the same implications for the teams involved as their 2007 matchup.
Two years ago, quarterback Chase Daniel shredded Kansas on 40-of-49 passing for 361 yards and three touchdowns en route to a 36-28 win that gave the Tigers a No. 1 ranking and left them one victory away from a national championship appearance. Meanwhile, the loss ended Kansas' dreams of a perfect season and a Big 12 Championship but landed the Jayhawks their first Orange Bowl berth in 39 years.
Like I said, Saturday's game doesn't carry nearly as much cache, but the matchup between the 7-4 Tigers and 5-6 Jayhawks certainly possesses some interesting subplots .
A win for head coach Gary Pinkel and the Tigers would result in a fourth consecutive season with at least eight wins, marking the first time in the 110-year history of the MU program that that has happened. A victory over KU would also go a long way in enhancing Missouri's bowl aspirations, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Missouri Tigers, Kansas Jayhawks, Mark Mangino

Pac-10 must increase TV exposure

Texas finished whipping Kansas at 11:32 p.m. ET Saturday night. As I sat in Tallahassee, Fla., watching late games, I looked forward to the local ABC affiliate's inevitable switch to the Oregon-Arizona thriller, which was still in regulation but looked destined for overtime.

Kansas Jayhawks: 10 Players to Buy or Walk By This Black Friday

Black Friday is not just the most popular shopping day in the history of the United States of America.

It's also the day before the 2009 Border Showdown between Kansas and Missouri, and potentially the Kansas seniors' (and Mark Mangino's) last practice as collegiate athletes.

Despite a nasty six-game slump and miserable off-the-field issues with head coach Mark Mangino, I still think that Kansas will be more than competitive enough Gary Pinkel and Missouri.

I'm not predicting a Kansas victory just yet, but there are several players who could make or break the outcome for Mark Mangino, Clint Bowen, or whoever will be handling all head-coaching duties for the weekend.

Let's take a look at which Jayhawks will be worth getting to the store early for and which guys should be left on the shelf for Saturday's Border Showdown in Arrowhead Stadium...
More than $6 million at stake in Kansas-Mangino showdown

                    Sporting News staff reports

Kansas coach Mark Mangino and the school might be grappling over more than $6 million if the athletic department's investigation into his treatment of players results in his dismissal, the Kansas City Star reported.

If Mangino were fired for cause, he would have 21 days to submit a written appeal of his termination to chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little or athletic director Lew Perkins. The appeal would be reviewed by a three-person committee appointed by Gray-Little and composed of faculty or professional staff employees—one selected by Gray-Little, one by Mangino and one agreed upon by both parties, according to the newspaper.

Mangino would have the right to attend committee meetings and have legal counsel.

Two committee members would have to rule in favor of the school to uphold the termination for cause. In that case, Mangino would be paid only what he is owed through the date of termination.

Mark Mangino: 'Football is fun for me'

AUSTIN, Texas — While Kansas continues to build its termination case against coach Mark Mangino for abuse of players, the Jayhawks now have lost six straight and need to beat Missouri next week to become bowl eligible. Mangino met with reporters after the 51-20 loss to Texas on Saturday night and addressed issues surrounding the team.
Q: There has been a lot of talk about team unity, and if you have lost the team during this investigation. Can you talk about team unity?
Mark Mangino: It is a united team. Let me say this to you: I am privileged to coach these kids. We are a 5-6 football team, and this is one of the most resilient groups of kids I have ever been around. I can't give you the exact reasons for that, but I think the fact that everything they do is together, it really makes a united football team.
Q: Has the team lost any focus with the issues surrounding the investigation?
MM: We have really good kids in terms of attitude, and I really think they understand about ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Mark Mangino, Kansas Jayhawks

Hot in the headset: Which coaches helped themselves?

The final weeks of the season mean money time for college coaches. Lucrative extensions and bonuses — or better-paying jobs — for the successful; pink slips for the ineffective.
Here's a coaching roll call from Saturday — those who helped themselves (and their wallets), and those with a long week ahead:
The Winners
  • Chip Kelly, Oregon. Move over, Iron Bowl. The Civil War ranks as this year's coolest rivalry showdown, thanks in large part to Kelly keeping the Ducks afloat after losses at Boise State and Stanford. If UO beats Oregon State on Dec. 3 at Autzen Stadium, Kelly's rookie head coaching season ends in a Rose Bowl.
  • Dabo Swinney, Clemson. Published reports indicate the ACC Atlantic Division title the Tigers clinched Saturday will double Swinney's $800,000 salary. Not bad for a guy who was an unknown wide receivers coach 13 months ago. "We're happy today," he told reporters after his team's win over Virginia. "But we're not done yet." ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oregon Ducks, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Clemson Tigers, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Kansas Jayhawks, Michigan Wolverines

Syracuse Dominates UNC; Wes Johnson and Orange Are the Team to Beat

Syracuse dominated North Carolina from start to finish. North Carolina was stopped cold by the Orangemen's 2-3 zone. The Tar Heels were exploited, they will not beat a team all year that forces them to shoot threes. Will Graves is their best three point theat and he's no more a threat from three than your average intramural all-star.
No matter what the polls say, at this point, the Orangemen have established themselves as the team to beat in all of college basketball.
Kansas hasn't played anyone, Duke looks good with Plumlee in the middle, but they too haven't played a formidable opponent. Syracuse is the team to beat as far as I am concerned.
No one can argue that the Orangemen, from one through five, are the most balanced team in the country. Andy Rautins, Rick Jackson, Wes Johnson, Onuaku, and Triche. Who can beat them right now? No one. The Orangemen's 24th preseason ranking was ridiculously low. The Orangemen will be in the Final Four, guaranteed. Period. The Tar Heels, Sweet Sixteen, no ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Syracuse Orange, North Carolina Tar Heels, Will Graves, Kansas Jayhawks, Andy Rautins

No. 3 Texas faces Kansas team in turmoil (AP)

When Colt McCoy started his first game at Texas in 2006, the second pass of his career was a sign of things to come: a 60-yard touchdown in a rout of North Texas. He still calls it one of his fondest memories at Royal-Memorial Stadium. On Saturday night, McCoy will trot onto the home-field turf for the last time with a chance to grab a record of a lifetime.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Colt McCoy, Texas Longhorns, Kansas Jayhawks

Who's Bad? Mark Mangino's Old School Ways Clash with New Generation

From the beginning of his tenure as head coach at the University of Kansas, Mark Mangino has had many obstacles to overcome, most importantly turning the fortunes of a perennial loser.
For starters, he inherited practice and game facilities that did not measure up to premier programs in the Big XII. In Austin, well, everything is bigger. Stillwater has billionaire T. Boone Pickens, and Nebraska has Dr. Tom Osborne.
Next, Coach Mangino needed to assemble a staff capable of snatching up out-of-state talent and keeping said talent away from the other suitors in the conference.
The state of Kansas is not a hotbed for football talent, so Mangino and his staff had to convince potential players that the aging digs in Lawrence were worth accepting as part of a larger opportunity to build a respectable football program.
Then there was the foregone conclusion that KU, having modest success on the gridiron, evidenced by the occasional bowl appearance, was and is in fact a basketball school.

Top Ranked Jayhawks Get Back To Business, Blast Bears 94-44

The last time the Kansas Jayhawks basketball team took the court, the Memphis Tigers gave the top rated team in the land all they could handle.
Thursday night at the cozy confines of Allen Fieldhouse, the Central Arkansas Bears did not.
The Jayhawks used a 21-0 run to jump out to a 29-5 lead early in the first half and never looked back.
Paced by senior leader Sherron Collins' seven points, eight players scored and 11 took the court in the first 20 minutes.
The second half was much of the same as everyone with a crimson jersey contributed to the 94-44 blow out victory.
As Kansas coach Bill Self cleared the bench nine players ended up posting seven points or more.
Xavier Henry, Marcus Morris, Tyrel Reed and Collins led the team in scoring with 12 points each.
Freshman Thomas Robinson grabbed 13 rebounds and added eight points off the bench.
Maybe the brightest moment of the game was freshman point guard C.J. Henry getting first action of the season hitting two 3-point shots en route ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Kansas Jayhawks, Sherron Collins, Bill Self, Memphis Tigers, Central Arkansas Bears

Memphis-Kansas: Tigers Take Top-Ranked Jayhawks To The Wire, 57-55

Just the sound of "The Memphis Tigers" will bring smiles to Jayhawks' basketball fans for eternity.
On Tuesday night Kansas packed up its No. 1 ranking and headed for the Scott Trade Center in St. Louis, MO for the second game of the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic and a rematch of the 2008 National Title Game with Memphis.
Five of the night's starters, Kansas' Cole Aldrich and Sherron Collins and the Tigers' Pierre Henderson-Niles, Doneal Mack, and Willie Kemp all played in that championship game—one of the most thrilling games of all time.
Although the stakes were not as high as they were that April evening in 2008, the two programs did play in front of dozens of legendary players and a nice crowd.
Players like Rick Barry, Walt Bellamy, and Jayhawks legend Lynette Woodard had to appreciate the scrappy play of rookie coach Josh Pastner's Memphis squad and the physical dominance of Kansas big man Aldrich.
