Conference Call: Wildcats the workhorses of Big Ten

Each week, Sporting News' Matt Hayes ranks the Division I-A conferences—and the teams within each league.
3. Big Ten
1. Ohio State
2. Iowa
3. Penn State
4. Northwestern
5. Wisconsin
6. Michigan State
7. Minnesota
8. Purdue
9. Illinois
10. Michigan
11. Indiana
Rising
Northwestern: The team that just keeps working. A perfect image of coach Pat Fitzgerald, and another overachieving season.
Falling
Michigan: If UM's elite recruits played as hard as Northwestern's castoffs, we wouldn't be having this discussion about the state of the program after two years under Rich Rodriguez.

The Big Ten season is over and it's a long, long wait until Bowl Championship Series bids get doled out Dec. 6. The wait may be particularly stressful for No. 12 Penn State. The Nittany Lions (10-2, 6-2) closed out the regular season Saturday with a convincing 42-14 win at Michigan State.
Beat my grandma: Week 12 college football picks

                    Dave Curtis

The Week 12 slate for Grams looks curious because of who didn't make the cut. No Florida, Alabama or Texas. No Ohio State-Michigan. No forecast on the future of Notre Done (more on this later).
Go ahead and insert an "every week is a playoff" joke here. With the top 10 on furlough from national prominence, Grams considered a bye week here in November. "Got to rest up for Thanksgiving," she said.
Don't despair, Grams. Somehow, five compelling contests emerged. Penn State looks to upgrade its Florida bowl trip (Orange trumps Capital One). Bill Snyder goes championship-hunting in Lincoln. The Big Game is, well, a big game.
Here are the big five, straight up:
No. 13 Penn State at Michigan State, 3:30 p.m., ABC
The Skinny: As Grams gains steam down the stretch (that 1-4 week looks like an aberration), she's thinking JoePa and his boys might be losing it. "A couple of times, I picked them and ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Penn State Nittany Lions, Ole Miss Rebels, Michigan State Spartans, Stanford Cardinal, Kansas State Wildcats, Arizona Wildcats

Three Pointers: Early tests helping top contenders

Sporting News' Mike DeCourcy analyzes what Wednesday's buzz means to college basketball.
Self awareness
Lots of writers mocked Kentucky coach John Calipari for claiming he was "ecstatic" about his team falling behind by 18 points. (Hey, I'm sure it was all in good fun, right?) But Kansas affirmed Calipari's point that there is nothing better for a highly rated team in November than a near-death experience.
Looking at KU's schedule in October, before anyone had bounced a ball, it was hard to find an occasion when it appeared Bill Self's Jayhawks would be challenged, let alone beaten.
The Jayhawks aren't playing in any Maui Invitational or Paradise Jam-type tournaments. And they aren't playing much away from home before New Year's. They go to Los Angeles for a Dec. 6 game against UCLA, but the Bruins are rebuilding. They play La Salle in Kansas City, which is just home with a short bus trip included.
But feisty Memphis rose up Tuesday night and pushed the Jayhawks all the way to ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Michigan State Spartans, Kansas Jayhawks, Tennessee Volunteers

College basketball teams get early chance to prove they belong among elite

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State proved it has the depth of a champion, and Gonzaga showed it's not in any hurry to decline as the Spartans were forced to rally for a 75-71 victory Tuesday at the Breslin Center.
Here are four more games in the next week that'll tell us more about how legitimate some of the nation's ranked teams are—and who might eventually be joining them.

Gani Lawal and Georgia Tech can start proving they're worthy of being ranked this week.
Georgia Tech vs. Dayton, Thursday 11:30 a.m., Puerto Rico Tip-Off
What we need to know: Georgia Tech won just two ACC games last season but flew into the Top 25 when center Gani Lawal returned and elite recruit Derrick Favors joined him up front. Can the Jackets get that good this fast? Dayton is an athletic team that makes it hard to score. Some young teams don't handle frustration well. The best do.
Syracuse vs. California, Thursday 7 p.m., 2K Sports Classic
What we need to know: Syracuse responded well to ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Michigan State Spartans, Gani Lawal, Syracuse Orange

Izzo sees big things for Summers, if he can convince him

Tom Izzo: Summers "hasn't learned to play at a different level" for the Spartans.
EAST LANSING , Mich. -- When Michigan State coach Tom Izzo talks about junior wing Durrell Summers, he brings such names as Jason Richardson and Morris Peterson into the conversation. That's the kind of talent we're talking about here, but it's OK if you don't recognize this, because even Summers occasionally needs to be convinced.

"Sometimes I take plays off," he admitted.

That has been the challenge for Izzo since Summers arrived on campus three years ago. It comes up in practices. It comes up in games. It comes up when the Spartans are watching video from practices and games.

It'll come up when the Spartans review Tuesday's 75-71 victory over a Gonzaga, a game in which Summers scored 21 points on 8-of-9 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Cut down to a series of highlights, it was a phenomenal performance, but Summers played 32 minutes. There ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Michigan State Spartans, Durrell Summers, Tom Izzo

Conference Call: Ohio State is Big Ten's best -- again

Each week, Sporting News' Matt Hayes ranks the Division I-A conferences—and the teams within each league.
5. Big Ten
1. Ohio State
2. Iowa
3. Wisconsin
4. Penn State
5. Michigan State
6. Northwestern
7. Minnesota
8. Purdue
9. Illinois
10. Michigan
11. Indiana
Rising
Ohio State: Keep the pace, keep the faith. Last month, 'Bucks lost to Purdue. Four weeks later, they're Big Ten champs. Again.
Falling
Michigan: Defense has collapsed since 4-0 start: three losses by 10 points—where defense gave up 94 points—is the difference between no postseason and holidays in Florida.

An opening week in which only one ranked team lost meant few changes in the first poll of the regular season.

Kansas beat Hofstra 101-65 in its only game and was the runaway No. 1 in The Associated Press' college basketball poll, just as it was in the preseason Top 25. The Jayhawks received 58 first-place votes from the national media panel, three more than in the preseason poll.

Michigan State beat Florida Gulf Coast 97-58 in its opener and was again No. 1 on five ballots to hold second.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Kansas Jayhawks, Michigan State Spartans, Purdue Boilermakers
