Weis stays at Notre Dame, staff may not

Notre Dame’s new AD, Jack Swarbrick, saying “It was the right course of action,” today announced the school will retain Charlie Weis as its head football coach in 2009, verifying reports from last night.

The Irish finished with a 6-6 record this year, but Swarbrick, after consulting with president John Jenkins, said he felt Weis had put a solid foundation in place. Swarbrick met with Weis yesterday in California to discuss the season and put speculation about Weis’ future to rest.

That is not to say everyone is happy with a second disappointing season. We wouldn’t be surprised to see some staff changes. Weis is 28-21 after four years and only eight of his wins have come against teams with a winning record. The Irish have gone 1-16 recently against teams with winning records and Weis only has two wins over ranked teams - Michigan in 2005 and Penn State in 2006. Michigan imploded after that, finishing a disappointing 7-5 that year. Penn State wound up ranked 24th.

Big Recruiting Weekend on Tap for Michigan Wolverines Football

With many teams coming back from Thanksgiving holiday or getting ready for their Conference Championship or starting practice for a bowl game, the Michigan football program can focus on the future and work the recruiting trail long and hard. One of the most important things about recruiting is getting kids on campus "to drink the Kool-Aid" and get a feel for the program and academics.
There are six or seven official visit weekends left between now and signing day (there is a two-week dead period around the holidays). This weekend will be an very important one for the remaining spots in this year's class. Michigan needs to fill holes in the offensive line and in the defensive backfield. Here are some of the recruits who are scheduled to come in this weekend:

"Big" Will Campbell, the five-star DE. RR visited all the Cass Tech players at school this week. Big Will has made recent visits to both Alabama and LSU. Might still visit Miami and USC. The Miami coaches were in town to visit ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines

Michigan Wolverines' End of Season Grades and Awards

Michigan Wolverines 3-9, 2-6 Big Ten
Well, if that wasn't the worst season in Michigan history as some have argued, it certainly was the most depressing.
A lot of records were broken in all the wrong ways, and the Wolverines play was beyond dismal throughout most of the season with the exception of the Minnesota game and the fourth quarter of the Wisconsin game.
Outside of those five quarters of football, Michigan never looked like it could compete in the Mid-American Conference, let alone the Big Ten.
Still, I have to support my team and hand out some grades and awards.

  Offense
From the very start of the season against Utah, this offense looked like it was going to have trouble moving the ball.
Having two redshirt freshmen to choose from didn't leave Rich Rodriguez a lot of options either. Nick Sheridan, a former walk on, and Steven Threet, a transfer from Georgia Tech, never found a rhythm in RichRod's offense.
That and neither could throw the ball more than five yards ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines

Most Disappointing Season Ever

As the college football season comes to a close, there is one thing I am certainly thankful for this holiday season.
The 2008 Michigan Football season is finally over.
Yes, there were positive plays during the season, but the negatives outweighed—by far—the positives.
While other folks might start off their New Years resolutions by losing weight or quitting smoking, one can only hope that Rich Rodriguez sets his task towards turning this year into an anomaly.
He has eight months of off-season to bring this football team and program back to that other holiday tradition we Wolverine fans have grown to love: a New Year's Day Bowl game.
If he doesn't, Rich Rod needs to go.
Michigan has long been a tradition-rich program. They hold the number one winning percentage of all time, have 11 National Championships, and had the longest current bowl streak in the nation.
Every year, we believe that the University of Michigan should at the very least be competing for the Big Ten ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines

Biggest Upsets in College Football History: USC or Michigan?

There have been many upsets in the past and present in college football, which one ranks as No. 1?
In 1942, Holy Cross, which was a 28-point underdog, beat Boston College 55-12. It was the largest point difference Holy Cross has ever had as an underdog.
In 1972, Missouri, which was a 35-point underdog, beat Notre Dame 30-26. That same year Notre Dame went on to the Orange bowl and met against the Nebraska Cornhuskers and lost 40-6.
In 2007, Appalachian State beat Michigan. A top-5 team losing to a Div I-AA school at home certainly ranks among the greatest upsets ever, but as was pointed out at the time, it wasn't the biggest upset in terms of the point spread.
USC losing to Stanford very well might be the biggest upset ever. Stanford was a 38-point underdog when the line opened and in some spots grew to 41 points, making the Cardinal win, quite possibly, the biggest upset in college history.
There are many not mentioned, but these stand out to me ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Michigan Wolverines, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Appalachian State Mountaineers, Southern California Trojans

Michigan Football Weekly Recruiting Update: Dec. 1

December tends to be a dead period for recruiting and that has held true for Michigan although a couple things happened last week including a new Wolverine and scheduling for a big recruiting weekend.
The Wolverines added their 20th player to their class this week when Vladamir Emilien announced his decision to attend school in Ann Arbor. Emilien is a safety from Florida and is one of Michigan's most important pick ups as safety play was very poor this year for more him check out my article http://bleacherreport.com/articles/85344-vladimir-emilien-becomes-the-next-michigan-wolverine .
While adding Emilien Michigan lost on the sweepstakes for Emilien's teammate Josh Robinson who will be headed for Central Florida instead. Robinson has continued to express an interest to play in-state and expressed an interest at playing wide-receiver while the Wolverines were recruiting him for defensive-back.
Michigan will have their biggest recruiting weekend this week when the Wolverines host the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines, Rich Rodriguez

Michigan Football In Decline

Michigan football is on the decline fast. They are about to head into the lower depths of the Big Ten conference. The bottom of the Big Ten is usually reserved for Minnesota, Indiana, Northwestern, and until recently Illinois.
The fact that Michigan is even in the discussion is appalling. This Rich Rodriguez character is nothing more than a fly-by-night snake oil salesman and Mary Sue Coleman bought his smack hook, line, and sinker. Michigan’s record is 3-9 overall.
If I were a head coach recruiting against Michigan I would be selling my recruits on the fact that Michigan isn’t the old Michigan any more. It’s no longer an NFL factory, they have almost become irrelevant. How many NFL draft picks did Rodriguez have while at WVU?
Now comes word that he finally got his contract signed, now under contract until 2013. I’m surprised the administration didn’t wait until the year was over. I don’t think they ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines, Rich Rodriguez

Is Rich Rodriguez Already on The "Hot Seat"; Should He Be?

With all the talk about the BCS and how the system is continually broken, one team not worrying about this problem are the Michigan Wolverines.
After a paltry 3-9 season, head coach Rich Rodriguez is out on the recruiting trail for "his" type of players to revive the suddenly downtrodden Wolverine program. Due to the voraciousness of the Wolverine boosters and alumni to improve now, along with a suddenly questioning press core, Rich Rodriguez had better realize that his football program is already behind the curve that could swell and take him with it.
There is some evidence that Rodriguez understands the desire of the Wolverine faithful to improve now. Rodriguez hinted at this, stating "There's more work to do than I anticipated."
Rodriguez also noted: "Anytime you don't have a successful record and lose as many games as we did, you're going to be disappointed. If you're not disappointed, you shouldn't be in the profession.
College Football Gods Offer Advice

Dear College Football's best teams,
We here in Football Heaven would like to share with you an inkling of our vast wisdom concerning this year's college football season:
  1. To the Alabama Crimson Tide - Your season is perfect, BUT take your time winning a national title, because as soon as you do your coach will take a job at Michigan or Notre Dame.

  2. To the Oklahoma Sooners - You may have fooled the computers but in reality you should be ranked behind the team you lose to. You have no business being ahead of Texas.

  3. To the Texas Longhorns - Who does 3rd in the Big 12 even play in a bowl game? Michigan State? Wow, the computers really got you good.

  4. To the Florida Gators - regardless of who wins the SEC championship, please beat your Big 12 opponent. We can't stand another minute of Big 12 superiority garbage. Did you know YOUR conference has a vastly superior non-conference record to the Big 12? Of course you did, and everyone else will when you or ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines

Raye Bailey and Anthony Jones had 19 and 13, respectively, for the Tigers (4-2) who led nearly all but three minutes of regulation.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Michigan Wolverines, Savannah State Tigers

The Iron Bowl: The Greatest Rivalry In Sports (By Far)

The Iron Bowl is, without a doubt, the greatest rivalry in sports.
Or, it is the greatest rivalry in sports that don’t divide fans by religious affiliations or hooligan clans. Now, people can argue against this statement, but I will not be swayed. Still, I invite you to give it a shot.
I know right now there are a few rivalries that have already popped into everyone’s heads. Yep, there are some good ones that I will discuss, but nothing matches the Iron Bowl.
In college football you have Ohio State vs. Michigan .
It’s a good one, but not as great as the Iron Bowl. First off, the rivalry is between two states. Sure, this past Monday morning, Michigan fans went to work with heads hung low.
However, they were probably comforted by fellow Michigan fans in their home state. They didn’t have to sit next to some smug Auburn Tiger or Alabama Crimson Tide co-worker who will give them grief for the next year.

2008 Michigan Football: The Program That Really Was

So many journalists and fans alike clamored after the 3-9 season Michigan suffered this year.
"They have too much talent!"
"Rodriguez wasted it!"
"They never should have gone 3-9!"
Ladies and gentlemen, the truth is, Michigan was not the program we all thought it was. Michigan did not have the depth and talent that we all thought they did.
For example, of the 2004 recruiting class (fifth-year seniors this year), nine players either transferred or quit the team before Rodriguez came. Five (Henne, Hart, etc.) graduated.
Of the 2005 class, eight players transferred/quit, two left the team (Bass—5* who ruined knee, Slocum—Academics), and one (Zirbel) became unavailable after Rodriguez came.
Still with me? That's 25 players. That's 25 "premium" recruits we supposedly had. Let's continue.
This year, players like Artis Chambers, Zion Babb, and Justin Boren either transferred, planned to, or were kicked off the team.
Other players haven't panned out as we thought they would. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines, Rich Rodriguez

Happy Thanksgiving to Bleacher Creatures

This is not exactly my favorite time of year. Why you ask?
It's almost the end of college football. I am officially in mourning next week. Sure we'll get all the bowls, but honestly, this is it. Three months and bam! Done.
Did your team fulfill all your dreams? Probably not. Maybe? Too early to tell? Yes?
Not sure where my team is going to end up, but hopefully, it will have a fruit, party, sweetener or flower in front of the bowl name. Thanks to the BCS, those are really the only bowls that really have relevance in college football any more. I'm hoping for the party name, but will probably have to settle for a flower. Life's tough sometimes.
In honor of Thanksgiving, and my foul mood, it's time to hand out the annual Turkey Awards. Those persons who have messed up a good thing, made a bad thing worse, or just plain don't have a clue.
The Turkey Award List:
Lou Holtz . I actually think Lou is a pretty funny guy, but dang, using naughty words and then the dreaded "Hitler" word on two ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines

Michigan Honors Buffalo Bulls, Declines to Become Bowl Eligible

Fifty years ago the Buffalo Bulls sent a message to the backwards-thinking Orlando High School Athletic Association and to racial prejudice by declining a bid to the Tangerine Bowl. The OHSAA would not allow interracial play, and thus the Bulls' two black players would not be allowed to play in the game.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the declination. Prolific university and football factory Michigan has decided to honor Buffalo's decision with its own protest. The school declined to reach a 6-6 record, which would have made the Wolverines bowl eligible.
Rich Rodriguez told reporters " The Buffalo story is an amazing story. Fifty years ago, a team stood up to real adversity. We'd like to honor those guys by declining to make it to a bowl this year. "
When asked why he didn't inform Michigan fans or officials of the decision, the coach told reporters to " Get a life " and stormed out of the press conference.
Note: To this date, the bid is the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines, Buffalo Bulls, Rich Rodriguez, South Florida Bulls

Can Michigan Go 9-3 in 2009? It's Not a Dream—It's a Possibility (Part I)

Over the past couple weeks there have been quite a few articles written on this website about how the Michigan Wolverines next year will be just as bad or improve little at all. Now while I do believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion, these articles were obviously written by someone who doesn't follow the Wolverines regularly and not surprisingly were by fans that despise Michigan—Buckeyes.
Now as the Wolverines pulled off a pitiful 3-9 record this year, marking their worst season ever, their program appears to the naked eye like it is taking a turn for the worst. The future to those who know the program better looks bright.
The 2009 Wolverines are going to improve greatly from their pitiful 2009 campaign, and there are a couple reasons for it.

  1. Experience on offense and running the spread.
Michigan's offense was probably the most disappointing aspect of their play this year, as Rodriguez's spread-option offense only averaged 290 ypg this year ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines, Rich Rodriguez

Michigan Wolverines: Rich Rodriguez May Be Safe But Assistants Should Not

In his season-ending press conference, Rich Rodriguez said he would evaluate all of his coaches and make changes as he saw fit. I’ll believe that when I see it.
Rodriguez also said before the Capital One Bowl that he would adapt his system to his players...we can all agree that didn’t happen. The interesting thing is that Rodriguez has been described as being extremely loyal to his staff, loyal to a fault. Almost all his staff has been with him from the start, and I don’t see him cutting longtime friends after one year.
Ironically enough, Lloyd Carr’s critics said the same thing, even though he let go of Jim Herrmann and Terry Malone, among others. Here is my breakdown of each position coach and how I would change the staff. If RichRod makes no changes to his staff, I have no idea how he will sell that to the Michigan fan base, but if he can pull that off he could sell sand in the desert.

Big House Blog Crystal Ball: Coaching Vacancies

So with the season over for some teams and coming to an end for others, I thought it would be a good time to get out the Crystal Ball and predict who might fill some of the current high profile coaching vacancies around the country.

  Washington
Was rumored to have offered the job to Texas coordinator Will Muschamp before he became the "head coach in waiting" for the Longhorns. I still think they will go after Jim Mora before he becomes the Seahawks coach in a few months. They won't get Jim because the dollars in the NFL are just too large.
That leaves my predicition: Utah coach Kyle Whittingham would be a good fit for the Huskies. Of course his name is similar to Tyrone Willingham which could cause some confusion. (look for Brian Kelly to become an option if the below rumor happens)

I think it's a toss up between Brian Kelly and Lane Kiffin for this job. Internet reports are out today that say it's Lane. First off, let me place my article in perspective. I am a lifelong, die-hard Ohio State Buckeye. While I enjoy the recent domination in the rivalry, I understand that Michigan being competitive is good for Ohio State, good for the rivalry, and good for the Big Ten.
Obviously Rich Rodriguez's first year was awful, terrible, an abomination, whatever you want to call it. The real question is, where does Michigan football go from here?
Traditionally Rodriguez dismantles a program, spends a year in the dumps, then does all right, and in his third year runs a competitive football program. I don't want to use history as a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines

You know those sweet NBA commercials with the piano music and the slogan, "Where Amazing Happens"?
Well, this is one of those, but not exactly!
Michigan football is currently a shell of its former self and in a state of total disarray.
In honor of this fact, as a loyal Buckeye fan, I give you my latest YouTube video.
ENJOY!

Grades: Michigan Gets Pounded By Ohio State For Fifth Straight Year

  Ohio State 42, Michigan 7
Final Record: 3-9, 2-6 10th place in Big Ten
Before I get started let me just add this little disclaimer. I was thoroughly hammered during most of the game and don't remember much of the second half.
I started pounding beers after Beanie Wells 59-yard touchdown run that looked eerily similar from the past two seasons.
Guess not much has changed after all. Three straight years Wells has now made Michigan's defense look foolish with long runs right up middle.
And it wasn't just that play. It was multiple big plays by Ohio State that took me from light afternoon drinking straight to binge drinking.
For the first time in history, Ohio State has won five straight against the Wolverines and for only the second time in history has Michigan lost to all three of its rivals in one season.
Bo Schembechler is rolling over in his grave.
But the worst season in Michigan history is finally over and I don't have to grade performances anymore so let's get this over with. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines, Ohio State Buckeyes

Vladimir Emilien Becomes the Next Michigan Wolverine

It has been a busy past two weeks for Michigan recruiting. First K Brendan Gibbons committed on Nov. 13, and then DT Pearlie Graves pledged less than a week later on the 19th. Now, this morning S Vladimir Emilien announced that he will be attending the University of Michigan.
Vladimir Emilien decided between four schools at a press conference in his school at 9:30 a.m. The four schools Emilien was considering were Stanford, Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Michigan, although sources close to him stated it came down to Michigan and Stanford.
Throughout his recruiting process Emilien stated a strong interest in playing for a Big Ten program and made it official this morning.
"Michigan felt like home to me, and it was just in my veins after I took a visit there," Emilien announced at his press conference according to rivals.com.
