Week 13 postgame, the players: Deacons' Skinner is a demon in finale

Riley Skinner's Wake Forest finale is sweet. Too bad things went sour for the Deacons.
Sporting News' Derek Samson covers the best and worst performances of Week 13 in college football.

Game balls
  1. Riley Skinner, Wake Forest QB. Skinner's college career ended in fitting fashion. He was the catalyst in Wake Forest turning around its miserable program (the Deacons returned to gloomy days this year, however). Skinner passed for a career-high 372 yards and a school-record five touchdowns to help Wake Forest defeat Duke 45-34. He was 28-of-38 passing and did not throw an interception.

  2. Danario Alexander, Missouri WR. Alexander's November was remarkable, as he added 15 catches and 233 receiving yards in Saturday's win over Kansas. That gives Alexander 49 receptions for 820 yards and five TDs this month. And to think Alexander didn't even put up the best receiving numbers in Saturday's game. KU's Dezmon Briscoe caught 14 passes for 242 yards.

This year's Egg Bowl matchup between No. 20 Mississippi and Mississippi State is a tough one for middle linebackers. Ole Miss features Dexter McCluster, who's as hard to tackle as smoke.
The SEC Is Looking Weak Again In Men's Hoops

It's basketball season again. Contrary to popular belief, many SEC fans love basketball season. I am one of them. I was a bit miffed last season when the SEC only got three NCAA bids. I felt Auburn should have gotten one too. I especially felt that way when I saw teams like Maryland and Arizona get in with their puny resumes.
But, then the three SEC teams, Mississippi State, Tennessee, and LSU were out quicker than a hiccup. There was no reason to argue then.
But looking at the teams who were almost good enough to get in, Auburn, Florida, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, and South Carolina, and looking what these teams were bringing back, I thought the SEC was in for a good year this year. This was also enhanced by a highly ranked recruiting class among the SEC schools. Kentucky's was out of this world.
I was a bit ticked at the lack of respect the SEC was getting in the preseason. Many "experts" were saying that the league would get anywhere from four to six teams in the NCAA. Five seemed to be the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Florida Gators, Mississippi State Bulldogs, South Carolina Gamecocks

Conference Call: Rebels on the rise in SEC

Each week, Sporting News' Matt Hayes ranks the Division I-A conferences—and the teams within each league.
1. SEC
1. Alabama
2. Florida
3. Mississippi
4. LSU
5. Arkansas
6. Auburn
7. Tennessee
8. Kentucky
9. South Carolina
10. Georgia
11. Mississippi State
12. Vanderbilt
Rising
Ole Miss: Rebels have won five of their last six and again are the league's hot team late in the season. Too bad the first five weeks were so uneven.
Falling
Georgia: Losing to Kentucky in Athens for the first time in forever caps the meltdown of a season. Dawgs staring at first six-loss season since 1996.

Arkansas RB Smith (hamstring) out for season

Arkansas running back Michael Smith is out for the season with a hamstring injury.

Smith was the Razorbacks' leading rusher heading into Saturday's game against Mississippi State. The school said before the game he will miss the rest of the season.

Smith has fought injuries all year. He missed two of Arkansas' first 10 games, although he was able to play last weekend against Troy.

A senior, Smith finishes 2009 with 396 yards on 71 carries. Smith rushed for over 1,000 yards in 2008.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Arkansas Razorbacks, Mississippi State Bulldogs

Arkansas Razorbacks vs. Mississippi State Bulldogs: Hogs on a Roll

Mississippi State is supposed to be one of those "dangerous" teams that has some talent and has been injected with new coaching and new enthusiasm. The Bulldogs played LSU very tough and Florida didn't run away with their game.
Mississippi State is one game shy of being .500. If it had beaten one team that it instead lost to, the Bulldogs would be even and hoping for a bowl.
That formality out of the way, there is a flip side to this coin. LSU has had offensive woes all season, so that game being close wasn't necessarily as much of a statement as some made it out to be.
'Bama dominated the bulldogs. And Miss. State would not have scored a touchdown on Florida had it not been for two uncharacteristic Tebow interceptions that both got ran back for scores.
State hasn't beaten a single team it wasn't supposed to. The team's wins came against Jackson State, Middle Tennessee State, Vanderbilt, and Kentucky. And the Kentucky game was courtesy of three Wildcat turnovers, which prevented the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Arkansas Razorbacks, Mississippi State Bulldogs

Mississippi State guard Dee Bost: 'We can win a national championship'

Mississippi State's Dee Bost spent his freshman year duking it out in the SEC as a 163-pound point guard, which made him a middleweight in a conference full of heavyweights and light-heavies.
He tried to fix that with an offseason diet and training regimen that has added 11 pounds to his frame. The Bulldogs are the No. 10 team in the Sporting News college basketball yearbook rankings. He spoke with Sporting News' Mike DeCourcy.
Sporting News: What's it been like for the players as you wait on news about Renardo Sidney's eligibility?
Dee Bost: Naturally, we all want him to play for us this year, to be part of our team. So we're waiting and hoping they'll clear him.
SN: If he's allowed to play, how powerful will your frontcourt be?
DB: If he's allowed to play, we'll be very deep in the frontcourt. It would allow us to play different ways. It would cause a lot of problems, because you can't double-team with the shooters we have from the outside. It would have to be one-on-one, and ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Mississippi State Bulldogs, Dee Bost

SEC Basketball's First Week Not Kind to Most Teams

While Arkansas exploded in its first game, it got brought down to reality by 20th-ranked Louisville. Several other SEC teams have lost already as well.

One of those teams included 18th-ranked Mississippi State.

The biggest surprise for the conference, however, was a positive one. Rotnei Clarke blew past SEC and Arkansas records on his way to a 13-of-17 performance from downtown to post 51 points against Alcorn State.

Here are Week One's awards.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Rotnei Clarke (33.5 ppg, 2.0 stl, 66.7% 3PT)

COACH OF THE WEEK: Trent Johnson (3-0 with win over Western Kentucky)

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Marshawn Powell (16.0 ppg, 11.0 rpg, 2.5 blk)

A breakdown of each team's performance thus far follows.
SEC Starting Out Slow With Bad Hiccups!

Coming off a year where you only had three teams earn a spot in the NCAA tournament the last thing the SEC wanted was a slow start.
But, a little over a week into the season and the conference already has five losses with four to lesser opponents.
Mississippi St., Auburn, Arkansas, Alabama, and Georgia have all lost this year.
Arkansas did lose to a quality opponent in Louisville, but when you lose by 30 that is unacceptable.
With loses to Rider, Missouri State, Cornell, and Wofford, and a close call against Miami(OH) for the team believed to win the league Kentucky this could be a very long season for the conference.
The Conference is sitting at 17-5 for the season so far with LSU leading the way with a 3-0 record.
Earlier in the season players are rusty and you are trying to get the players adjusted to playing with each other if you have a young team. With that said at no time should you lose to an inferior opponent.
The SEC needs at least six teams to go dancing this year to give ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Kentucky Wildcats, Mississippi State Bulldogs, Georgia Bulldogs, Arkansas Razorbacks, Louisville Cardinals

UCLA and Mississippi State May Not Recover After Losing To Mid-Majors

Losing an early non-conference game against a mid-major can be an early death sentence for some teams, but for others it can just be a blip on a radar soon forgotten.
Kentucky's recent disasters under Billy Gillispie are the easiest examples to point out as ways an early-season upset can derail a season.
In each of the past two seasons, the Wildcats went down early against Gardner-Webb in 2007 and Virginia Military Institute in 2008.
The SEC also suffered several other significant upsets when Mercer knocked off not one, but two SEC West teams, Auburn and Alabama.
Neither recovered, and the Tigers may have been a mere one game away from making the NCAA Tournament. That loss to Mercer have doomed Auburn to the NIT.
But some teams can recover. The well coached, talented squads built for success can put a loss behind them and make a run in March.
Michigan State lost an exhibition game against Division II Grand Valley State, but eventually went on to the Sweet 16.
In 2005, when North ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Mississippi State Bulldogs

Conference Call: Auburn tumbles in SEC

Each week, Sporting News' Matt Hayes ranks the Division I-A conferences—and the teams within each league.
1. SEC
1. Alabama
2. Florida
3. LSU
4. Mississippi
5. Auburn
6. Georgia
7. Tennessee
8. Arkansas
9. South Carolina
10. Kentucky
11. Mississippi State
12. Vanderbilt
Rising
Arkansas: Hogs are bowl eligible and closing in on eight wins in coach Bobby Petrino's second season. They've scored 152 points in the last three games.
Falling
Auburn: That 5-0 start will be followed by five losses in seven games after a loss to Alabama in the Iron Bowl. And that's probably where the Tigers should be in Gene Chizik's first season.
