Missouri Tigers Need to Avoid Stirring Echoes of Last Season vs. Kansas

The agonizing vividness of that photo is still freshly branded in my brain.
Down by two scores to unranked Kansas early in the third quarter of last season's Border Showdown, No. 13 Missouri scored 27 of the game's next 34 points to take a seemingly unconquerable 37-33 lead with less than two minutes remaining.
For a star-laden MU squad, it appeared to be a fitting and satisfying end to a regular season that had sadly gone terribly awry after beginning with darkhorse-ish national championship aspirations.
With a commanding lead in the shaky Big 12 North, the Tigers were assured a spot in the conference championship regardless of its performance against the Jayhawks.
But for MU quarterback Chase Daniel and his fellow seniors, the opportunity to beat their hated neighbors to the West for the third time in four years was the more pressing matter. And here they were, a mere 90 seconds away from their goal.
Yet, for all the heroics of the MU offense to dramatically and courageously overcome a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Kansas Jayhawks, Missouri Tigers, Gary Pinkel

Mangino to coach Kansas for final time? (AP)

The last thing this ancient and acrimonious rivalry needed was an extra adrenaline jolt. Kansas and Missouri are so quarrelsome already, they can't even agree on who has beaten whom the most. According to Kansas, the Jayhawks have built a 55-53-9 lead since that day in 1891 when fans arriving by carriage and horseback witnessed their first kickoff.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Kansas Jayhawks, Missouri Tigers, Mark Mangino

Missouri Tigers Enemy Intel: Examining the Kansas Jayhawks

This Saturday's Border Showdown between Missouri and Kansas hardly features the same implications for the teams involved as their 2007 matchup.
Two years ago, quarterback Chase Daniel shredded Kansas on 40-of-49 passing for 361 yards and three touchdowns en route to a 36-28 win that gave the Tigers a No. 1 ranking and left them one victory away from a national championship appearance. Meanwhile, the loss ended Kansas' dreams of a perfect season and a Big 12 Championship but landed the Jayhawks their first Orange Bowl berth in 39 years.
Like I said, Saturday's game doesn't carry nearly as much cache, but the matchup between the 7-4 Tigers and 5-6 Jayhawks certainly possesses some interesting subplots .
A win for head coach Gary Pinkel and the Tigers would result in a fourth consecutive season with at least eight wins, marking the first time in the 110-year history of the MU program that that has happened. A victory over KU would also go a long way in enhancing Missouri's bowl aspirations, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Missouri Tigers, Kansas Jayhawks, Mark Mangino

A Very Nelly G. Thanksgiving: What I Am Thankful For

There comes a time (or a few) when one man will be judged. Whether that judgement be in a past, present, or afterlife, that man will have to account for anything, ethical or not, they have done. One of those times is a certain Thursday in November. One would usually have to say what they are thankful for. Coming upon Thanksgiving, I have really though, and I am grateful for five things. And you will see what they are.
What Is a Moc? Missouri Tigers About to Find Out

The University of Tennessee-Chattanooga Microsoft Office Communicators doesn't exactly roll off the tongue does it?
What about the UTC Mars Orbiter Cameras? Or the UTC Macedonian Orthodox Church?
Casual observers of UTC athletics will have to dig a little deeper than Wikipedia to discover the mystery behind the UTC mascot. A Tennessee state history book might do the trick.
The athletic department at UTC has faced identity crisis since the inception of the program. Since the 1920's, the Moccasins represented UTC on the field and hardwood. Tennessee's Cherokee history supplied the impetus for the name.
Since the 1920's,UTC struggled with an appropriate logo for the Moccassins. UTC employed a Water Moccasin snake initially, in the 20's, eventually switching to a shoe (yes a Moccasin) to strike fear into their opponent's hearts during the 50's and 60's.
UTC kicked the shoe in the 70's in favor of Chief Moccanooga, an exaggerated Cherokee tribesman incorporating their previous nickname with ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Missouri Tigers

Kansas Jayhawks: 10 Players to Buy or Walk By This Black Friday

Black Friday is not just the most popular shopping day in the history of the United States of America.

It's also the day before the 2009 Border Showdown between Kansas and Missouri, and potentially the Kansas seniors' (and Mark Mangino's) last practice as collegiate athletes.

Despite a nasty six-game slump and miserable off-the-field issues with head coach Mark Mangino, I still think that Kansas will be more than competitive enough Gary Pinkel and Missouri.

I'm not predicting a Kansas victory just yet, but there are several players who could make or break the outcome for Mark Mangino, Clint Bowen, or whoever will be handling all head-coaching duties for the weekend.

Let's take a look at which Jayhawks will be worth getting to the store early for and which guys should be left on the shelf for Saturday's Border Showdown in Arrowhead Stadium...
Missouri Tigers: Dominating Team Effort Shows True Colors

On Sunday, the Missouri Tigers feasted.
On the opening weekend of Thanksgiving Break, the generous atmosphere of the holiday infused Mizzou Arena a little early. Every Tiger scored en route to their 100-44 victory over Texas Pan American. Kim English led all scorers with 25, including 5-6 from three point land.
Sure, the 56 point margin of victory fosters positive thoughts heading into the 2009 South Padre Invitational. But it was the way the Tigers won on Sunday that should have Columbia buzzing.
The Tigers forced the Bronchos into 10 first-half turnovers as MU allowed just 13 points in the opening half, the fewest in the history of Mizzou Arena. After each steal or block, Missouri guards began a track meet that ended in open transition threes or highlight-reel dunks.
A staple of this season's squad as well as any Mike Anderson team, the high-tempo attack, helped the Tigers enter halftime on a 46-5 run. Although it was against not the toughest of competition, the efficiency displayed by the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Missouri Tigers
