Nebraska vs. San Jose State College Football Preview

Well, the college football season is officially underway. There are some programs that haven't started their season yet, but for Husker fans, the season started the way it has for the past 23 years—with a solid victory.
It wasn't the prettiest, but it was very promising and very convincing. Aside from two fourth quarter miscues by Joe Ganz, the Huskers had very little problems with the Western Michigan Broncos.
Now we turn our attention to the San Jose State Spartans. They run the new-fad spread offense and are led by a recently promoted 3rd-String transfer from Cal, Kyle Reed. The only thing that would appear to be challenging about San Jose State is... well, that they run the spread offense.
Last week the Cornhuskers gave up 342 passing yards. And while some of that is because they were behind the entire game and forced to play catchup to our amazingly explosive offense, it's still a little unsettling to watch Western Michigan players execute crossing route after ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Nebraska Cornhuskers, San Jose State Spartans

Will Spartans Conquer the Huskers in One of College Football's Mecca's?

Head coach Dick Tomey and his San Jose State Spartan's are coming to Lincoln with confidence after a late comeback win in their first game against UC Davis.
The Spartans were sparked by the play of Cal transfer Kyle Reed, who was the third QB to enter the game for the Spartans. Offensively, the Spartans will be throwing the ball around in a spread offense and not much else. If the Spartans are able to run at all, it will be on broken plays or designed runs for the QB.
During his stint at Arizona, Dick Tomey made the "Desert Swarm" defense his trademark and will be bringing this same attacking style to Lincoln. This approach has always been a "live by the sword, die by the sword" kind of approach to defending an offense. It will allow the Spartans to make some plays, but invariably it will lead to some big plays for the Husker offense.
The Spartans will have their corners play a very tight man-to-man press coverage against the Huskers' bigger and stronger recievers. You can also count on ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan State Spartans, Dick Tomey, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Bo Pelini, San Jose State Spartans

Nebraska's Plan of Attack Vs. San Jose State

Much of the talk this week regarding San Jose State has centered on Western Michigan.
No, really—here we are on Thursday, and there hasn't seemed to be a whole lot of talk about Dick Tomey and his Spartans yet.
That's partially due to the fact that SJSU played and won in a nail-biter against a FCS team in Cal-Davis in Week One—only the ambitious among us will even see a box score from that game—and partially due to Nebraska's offense.
Even with the running game being a relatively low tire on the Watson hot rod last week, it looks like the Huskers have plenty of weapons to handle San Jose State.
That being the case, this week's plan of attack should revolve mostly around staying out of trouble, because as a coach of mine once (i.e. at least 500 times) told me, it's easier to stay out of trouble than get out of trouble.

Nebraska-San Jose State: Winning Coach, Ex-Cal QB Won't Help Spartans in Lincoln

When I hear the words "San Jose," the first things that come to mind are Technology, Silicon Valley, and No Way Jose.
With the spread currently hovering around 27 points in favor of Nebraska, it might be easy to dismiss this game as a "No Way Jose" game for the Huskers—as in there’s no way in hell San Jose State can come in and beat the Cornhuskers at Memorial Stadium.
But if you take a closer look at the Spartans, there are definitely some things that grab your attention and let you know this game isn’t going to be a total cakewalk.
First off, let’s start with their head coach, Dick Tomey. I bet you didn’t know about these two eye-popping diddy bam stats.

Total D-I Football Wins Among All Active Coaches
t1) Bobby Bowden (Florida State, West Virginia): 373
t1) Joe Paterno (Penn State): 373
3) Mack Brown (Texas, North Carolina, Tulane): 184
  4) Dick Tomey (San Jose State, Arizona, Hawaii): 176
5) Frank Beamer (Virginia Tech): 167

When Does Nebraska Get Top 25 Consideration?

Steve Sipple has posted his Top 25 ballot . OSU No. 1 and USC No. 4? I guess Sipple didn’t see USC trash Virginia on the road while OSU beat an FCS opponent at home.
Next question: If the Huskers go 3-0 going into the VT game, will they be ranked in the Top 25?
HG guess: No. The next few weeks are the cake part of the schedule. They just had their most impressive win of the first three games.
Yes, they can get some impressive margins against NMS and SJS, but I think Husker fans should relax and not worry about the Top 25 unless we are undefeated after the VT game.
HG prefers the Huskers to earn their ranking and be under the radar, not get it through non-BCS opponents.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Southern California Trojans, Bowl Championship Series

Worst Losses in Big 12 History

So some people might think Nebraska beating Western Michigan isn’t a big deal. Just a reality check: we barely beat Ball State last year.
So beating Western Michigan with ease isn’t satisfying? Go ask Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Mississippi State, Michigan, and Pitt, all of whom lost to non-BCS schools. We are in a different era, my friends.
With that, Mike Finger San Antonio Express ranks the most embarrassing losses in Big 12 history.

  1. UCLA 66, Texas 3 (Sept. 13, 1997)
Probably the lowest point in UT football history. This was the game that ultimately spelled the end for coach John Mackovic, and the afternoon Austin American-Statesman columnist Kirk Bohls described with the classic opening line, “At least the band kept playing.”

  2. UNLV 27, Baylor 24 (Sept. 11, 1999)
Of all of the Bears’ embarrassments, this one is the standard by which the rest are measured. Baylor led 24-21 with the ball near the UNLV goal line in the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Dan Hawkins, Colorado Buffaloes

Nebraska Cornhuskers Helmet Stickers for Week One

Big Red Buckle Helmet Sticker Award Winners for Nebraska's Week One's Victory Over Western Michigan: Wild Turkey Sticker ( To the Player Who Most Exemplifies Bob Devaney's Brand of Smashmouth Defense ):

No question LB Cody's Glenn's 12 total tackles, three pass break-ups, forced fumble and general speed and fury on defense is deserving of this coveted award. He will be a much-needed weapon in coverage against split-out running backs and tight-ends with a schedule heavy on spread offenses.

Runza At Halftime Sticker ( To the Most Dominating Offensive or Defensive Lineman ):

DT Ty Steinkuhler must be tired of his brother Baker getting all the pub. The older 'Kuhler showed up Saturday to add eight tackles in anchoring a strong defensive line. Steinkuhler will be a much-needed base presence to build on a good pass rush and stout rush D that allowed only eight yards on 25 Bronco carries.

Nebraska Reinvigorated With Energy, Passion, and Reckless Abandon

It was palpable in the air Saturday night in Lincoln, NE. Though I was unable to attend, by all accounts something was back that had been missing in recent years. Fans and players alike brought something different to the game—something that had disappeared so long ago.
Nebraska fans showed the passion and energy that is usually reserved for "big games," like those against Texas, Colorado, Oklahoma, or any bowl game of recent memory. It wasn't just another home opener.
The Nebraska players, especially the defense, appeared more energized, relentless, and aggressive in their approach to the game. The players flew around, gave 110 percent effort, hit hard and gang tackled, and appeared on the way to reestablishing a bit of the pride and heart and soul of the Blackshirts.
Mistakes were made, coverages were blown, and there were a few missed assignments, but overall any Nebraska fan can be proud of the effort that was displayed Saturday ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Nebraska Cornhuskers

  1. The Faithful has to be pleased with Shawn Watson's new look option set and Joe Ganz's ability to hit the edge.
Unfortunately, for Husker fans who still idolize Turner Gill and Tommie Frazier, watching the new Nebraska quarterback stumble through defensive pitch reads and trip up in the backfield is like reminiscing over Jack Nicholson's performances in "Easy Rider" and the "Shining," only to then turn on "The Bucket List."
  2. Joe Ganz's playmaking ability, timing, and capacity to extend the play with his feet make his 345 yards and four touchdowns on Saturday night even more impressive. Two late interceptions may add caution for Big Red fans who are ready to annoint Ganz the next Brett Favre.
Remember, what separates a gunslinging quarterback who from a quarterback who balances interceptions with his potential to make the big play is his wins-loss record.

The Osborne Identity: Former Coach Tom Osborne Looks to Restore Husker Luster

Saturday was a lovely day in Lincoln, Neb. It was unseasonably warm, the skies were clear, and it was an excellent day for a football game. At sold-out Memorial Stadium, more than 80,000 raucous red-clad fans watched the Nebraska Cornhuskers decimate the Broncos of Western Michigan University, 47-24.
This joyous Husker day was the culmination of a process that began last October.
Fed up with the damage Bill Callahan had done to the program, and exhausted with athletic director Steve Pederson’s poor decision making, the university fired Pederson and brought in legendary former head football coach Tom Osborne to take over as AD.
Before the ink had dried on Osborne’s new contract, Callahan was out of there, and former defensive coordinator Bo Pelini had been hired to take his place.
While Osborne has promised “no miracles and no quick fixes,” it is clear that he and Pelini are expected to bring back a part of the Husker culture that had been lost during ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Nebraska Cornhuskers

The first game of the Bo Pelini era kicked of tonight in Lincoln. The offense was impressive as Joe Ganz threw for 345 yards and four touchdowns with on 20-36 passing. He became the first quarterback in Nebraska history to throw for 300 or more yards four times in a career.
On the night Nebraska had 483 yards of total offense but more than that they had diverse play calling. Shawn Watson showed a little bit of everything offensively which kept the Western Michigan defense off balance for the most part.
The defense was also impressive allowing only eight rushing yards but the secondary allowed over 300 yards passing. That won't cut it in the big 12 with teams like Texas Tech and Missouri. Lead by Cody Glenn who ended the game with a team leading 12 tackles and a forced fumble. Nebraska lead 34-10 at the half.
Poor play by the huskers combined with better play from the Broncos lead to a slight Western Michigan comeback in ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Michigan Wolverines, Bo Pelini

Mich. beating Virginia and Iowa.
With this being Bo Pelini's first game back as Nebraska's permanent head coach I expect an energized and loud atmosphere in Memorial Stadium. It will probably be louder and unlike anything the Broncos have encountered in some of their other road trips.

Bo Pelini Should Start Right Off on the Hot Seat at Nebraska

A total of 106 All-Americans, 52 consensus All-Americans, three Heisman Trophies and five National Championships have borne the Nebraska brand name before Bo Pelini was given the reins of the historic Cornhusker program.
Yet it's been 11 years since Big Red Nation has hoisted a National Championship trophy and eight years since any Husker has received football's highest honor at the Downtown Athletic Club.
Pelini's predecessor, Bill Callahan, managed a 27-22 record over four seasons while at the helm in Lincoln, and while that might not seem all too shabby, his predecessor, Frank Solich, went 58-19 over six seasons... and was fired !
For the Cornhusker faithful, Callahan could not have gotten out of Lincoln fast enough.
In Callahan's final season, Nebraska posted a 5-7 record which included a 41-6 drubbing at the hands of Missouri, which was followed a week later by a 45-14 beatdown courtesy of Oklahoma State.
For Nebraska fans, who have been accustomed to being mentioned in the same ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Bo Pelini

A Quick Note to Londen Fryar from Nebraska Fans

Dear Londen,
Allow me, for a moment, to speak on the behalf of Nebraska fans the world over: We wanted you here.
Many of us have been asking ourselves all week, "Why is Irving Fryar's son playing against us?" Thanks to the recent story on mlive.com , we now have our answer: It was all Bill Callahan's fault.
None of us are really surprised. Blaming Bill Callahan was named Nebraskans' second favorite sedentary pastime in a recent Gallup poll, trailing only watching football.
I mean, your father had delivered not a grainy game film, but a DVD right into the hands of the former head coach, and, at least figuratively, he said "Meh." Perhaps it was too technical for him, but I digress.

Point Bo Pelini: Kirk Herbstreit Now Loves the Huskers?

The second first game of Bo Pelini's career at Nebraska is still four days away, but you can already give him one win in 2008: He's made a believer out of Kirk Herbstreit.
I know Nebraska fans have no love lost for the ESPN analyst, thanks to his histrionics surrounding an Internet poll a few years ago , but I honestly find his analysis as strong and insightful as anyone's on the GameDay set.
True, he's up against Corso, Holtz, May, and Howard, so that's sort of like winning the Big Ten of late, but personally I have no problem putting stock in what he says.
This year, based on his recently released Herbie awards , he's bullish on the Cornhuskers.
How'd that happen?

Could It Be? Nebraska Cornhuskers Football This Weekend?

After what’s seemed like longest offseason in the history of Nebraska Football, it’s finally here. WE HAVE CORNHUSKERS FOOTBALL THIS WEEKEND!
We’re so excited for the season to begin, we spent the last few days tearing down and subsequently rebuilding the entire Huskers Gameday blog ! We hope you dig the new look.
This week, Huskers Gameday will be providing our world-renowned Big 12 and national football picks, along with our in-depth analysis of the first opponent of the Bo Pelini Era, Western Michigan.
The Western Michigan offensive line only returns two starters, so we’re pretty damn positive the Pelini Borthers have drawn up some sick monster blitz packages to intimidate and confuse quarterback Tim Hiller. Hopefully, this will allow the defense to force some freaking turnovers. That’s what we want to see this Saturday: sacks, turnovers, and gang-tackling.
More in-depth analysis and our predictions coming soon…

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Bo Pelini

Will Huskers Return to Retro Style of Nebraska Football in 2008?

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are fast approaching a new chapter in an attempt to "right the ship" of a once dominant and proud program. What can we expect to see on fall Saturdays from this team in 2008?
More flying footballs? More final scores that seem more like those of college basketball games? Or a return to the basics that made Nebraska football what it was over the last 40 or so years?
Nebraska, thanks to Bill Callahan, does have a very deep and talented offensive line. The problem is, these guys have been asked to pass block the majority of the time the last four years. Run blocking is an attitude—it's a kick the guy's butt in front of you mindset that the offensive line develops.
In its own right, the running back position is almost as deep and talented as the offensive line. Guys like Marlon Lucky, Roy Helu, and Quentin Castille are ready to carry the load and run through those holes created by the big guys up ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Nebraska Cornhuskers
