Well, the college football season is officially underway. There are some programs that haven't started their season yet, but for Husker fans, the season started the way it has for the past 23 years—with a solid victory. It wasn't the prettiest, but it was very promising and very convincing. Aside from two fourth quarter miscues by Joe Ganz, the Huskers had very little problems with the Western Michigan Broncos. Now we turn our attention to the San Jose State Spartans. They run the new-fad spread offense and are led by a recently promoted 3rd-String transfer from Cal, Kyle Reed. The only thing that would appear to be challenging about San Jose State is... well, that they run the spread offense. Last week the Cornhuskers gave up 342 passing yards. Will Spartans Conquer the Huskers in One of College Football's Mecca's?

Head coach Dick Tomey and his San Jose State Spartan's are coming to Lincoln with confidence after a late comeback win in their first game against UC Davis. The Spartans were sparked by the play of Cal transfer Kyle Reed, who was the third QB to enter the game for the Spartans. Offensively, the Spartans will be throwing the ball around in a spread offense and not much else. If the Spartans are able to run at all, it will be on broken plays or designed runs for the QB. During his stint at Arizona, Dick Tomey made the "Desert Swarm" defense his trademark and will be bringing this same attacking style to Lincoln. This approach has always been a "live by the sword, die by the sword" kind of approach to defending an offense. It will allow the Spartans to make some plays, but invariably it will lead to some big plays for the Husker offense. Much of the talk this week regarding San Jose State has centered on Western Michigan. No, really—here we are on Thursday, and there hasn't seemed to be a whole lot of talk about Dick Tomey and his Spartans yet. That's partially due to the fact that SJSU played and won in a nail-biter against a FCS team in Cal-Davis in Week One—only the ambitious among us will even see a box score from that game—and partially due to Nebraska's offense. Even with the running game being a relatively low tire on the Watson hot rod last week, it looks like the Huskers have plenty of weapons to handle San Jose State. When I hear the words "San Jose," the first things that come to mind are Technology, Silicon Valley, and No Way Jose. With the spread currently hovering around 27 points in favor of Nebraska, it might be easy to dismiss this game as a "No Way Jose" game for the Huskers—as in there’s no way in hell San Jose State can come in and beat the Cornhuskers at Memorial Stadium. But if you take a closer look at the Spartans, there are definitely some things that grab your attention and let you know this game isn’t going to be a total cakewalk. Steve Sipple has posted his Top 25 ballot . OSU No. 1 and USC No. 4? I guess Sipple didn’t see USC trash Virginia on the road while OSU beat an FCS opponent at home. Next question: If the Huskers go 3-0 going into the VT game, will they be ranked in the Top 25? HG guess: No. The next few weeks are the cake part of the schedule. They just had their most impressive win of the first three games. Yes, they can get some impressive margins against NMS and SJS, but I think Husker fans should relax and not worry about the Top 25 unless we are undefeated after the VT game. HG prefers the Huskers to earn their ranking and be under the radar, not get it through non-BCS opponents.

It was palpable in the air Saturday night in Lincoln, NE. Though I was unable to attend, by all accounts something was back that had been missing in recent years. Fans and players alike brought something different to the game—something that had disappeared so long ago. Nebraska fans showed the passion and energy that is usually reserved for "big games," like those against Texas, Colorado, Oklahoma, or any bowl game of recent memory. The first game of the Bo Pelini era kicked of tonight in Lincoln. The offense was impressive as Joe Ganz threw for 345 yards and four touchdowns with on 20-36 passing. He became the first quarterback in Nebraska history to throw for 300 or more yards four times in a career. On the night Nebraska had 483 yards of total offense but more than that they had diverse play calling. Shawn Watson showed a little bit of everything offensively which kept the Western Michigan defense off balance for the most part. The defense was also impressive allowing only eight rushing yards but the secondary allowed over 300 yards passing. That won't cut it in the big 12 with teams like Texas Tech and Missouri. Lead by Cody Glenn who ended the game with a team leading 12 tackles and a forced fumble. Nebraska lead 34-10 at the half. Could It Be? Nebraska Cornhuskers Football This Weekend?

After what’s seemed like longest offseason in the history of Nebraska Football, it’s finally here. WE HAVE CORNHUSKERS FOOTBALL THIS WEEKEND! We’re so excited for the season to begin, we spent the last few days tearing down and subsequently rebuilding the entire Huskers Gameday blog ! We hope you dig the new look. This week, Huskers Gameday will be providing our world-renowned Big 12 and national football picks, along with our in-depth analysis of the first opponent of the Bo Pelini Era, Western Michigan. The Western Michigan offensive line only returns two starters, so we’re pretty damn positive the Pelini Borthers have drawn up some sick monster blitz packages to intimidate and confuse quarterback Tim Hiller. Hopefully, this will allow the defense to force some freaking turnovers. That’s what we want to see this Saturday: sacks, turnovers, and gang-tackling. Will Huskers Return to Retro Style of Nebraska Football in 2008?

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are fast approaching a new chapter in an attempt to "right the ship" of a once dominant and proud program. What can we expect to see on fall Saturdays from this team in 2008? More flying footballs? More final scores that seem more like those of college basketball games? Or a return to the basics that made Nebraska football what it was over the last 40 or so years? Nebraska, thanks to Bill Callahan, does have a very deep and talented offensive line. The problem is, these guys have been asked to pass block the majority of the time the last four years. Run blocking is an attitude—it's a kick the guy's butt in front of you mindset that the offensive line develops. In its own right, the running back position is almost as deep and talented as the offensive line. Guys like Marlon Lucky, Roy Helu, and Quentin Castille are ready to carry the load and run through those holes created by the big guys up ...
