Syracuse Dominates UNC; Wes Johnson and Orange Are the Team to Beat

Syracuse dominated North Carolina from start to finish. North Carolina was stopped cold by the Orangemen's 2-3 zone. The Tar Heels were exploited, they will not beat a team all year that forces them to shoot threes. Will Graves is their best three point theat and he's no more a threat from three than your average intramural all-star.
No matter what the polls say, at this point, the Orangemen have established themselves as the team to beat in all of college basketball.
Kansas hasn't played anyone, Duke looks good with Plumlee in the middle, but they too haven't played a formidable opponent. Syracuse is the team to beat as far as I am concerned.
No one can argue that the Orangemen, from one through five, are the most balanced team in the country. Andy Rautins, Rick Jackson, Wes Johnson, Onuaku, and Triche. Who can beat them right now? No one. The Orangemen's 24th preseason ranking was ridiculously low. The Orangemen will be in the Final Four, guaranteed. Period. The Tar Heels, Sweet Sixteen, no ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Syracuse Orange, North Carolina Tar Heels, Will Graves, Kansas Jayhawks, Andy Rautins

Johnson knew he needed to step up, and did

NEW YORK—Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim says he's known Wesley Johnson was a special talent from the first time he saw him play.

Wesley Johnson introduced himself to the Syracuse faithful with 25 points against UNC.
But it was not until Johnson, a 6-7 transfer from Iowa State, lit up Madison Square Garden the last two nights that the rest of the country got acquainted with his singular talent as well.

Johnson scored 25 points Friday night to lead Syracuse to a stunningly lopsided 87-71 victory over previously unbeaten North Carolina to win the 2K Sports Classic.
That came one night after he had 17 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks in a 95-73 semifinal victory over California. Those efforts earned him the tournament MVP award.
Leading an effort that Boeheim called his team's best ever at Madison Square Garden — especially in a second half that saw the Orange outscore the Tar Heels, 50-32 — Johnson shot 10 of 17 from the field, 4 of 8 from 3-point range, pulled down ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Syracuse Orange, North Carolina Tar Heels, Wesley Johnson

No. 22 Clemson cruises by UNC-Greensboro (AP)

If this is what passes for a tight game for No. 22 Clemson, the Tigers will take it. For the first time, a team kept it closer than 40 points against them -- but it still wasn't enough to test them for 40 minutes. As a result, Clemson routed North Carolina-Greensboro 89-67 on Friday night behind a season-high 17 points from Trevor Booker.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Clemson Tigers, North Carolina Tar Heels, Trevor Booker

Hayes' Week 12 picks: Ohio State dominance over Michigan will continue

Sporting News' Matt Hayes picks the 10 best games of the weekend and throws in his upset pick of the week as a bonus.
Ohio State 27, Michigan 14: This will be another Buckeyes-Wolverines game in the mold of yesteryear: Neither team can throw the ball, and one team plays better defense.
Iowa 20, Minnesota 10: Iowa has gone from the national championship conversation to Capital One Bowl talk in three weeks. A win would significantly improve Iowa's BCS hopes.
North Carolina 24, Boston College 23: Imagine what could have been for UNC if not for two horrible home losses to Virginia and FSU. The Heels would be playing for an at-large BCS bowl spot.
Oklahoma 31, Texas Tech 28: This matchup is a microcosm of the crazy season in the Big 12: Two teams with a handful of odd losses are scrambling for eight-win regular seasons.
Notre Dame 31, UConn 28: These are two teams with too many off-field distractions, but one offense is more balanced than the other.
  LSU 19, Mississippi 16: The ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ohio State Buckeyes, Michigan Wolverines, North Carolina Tar Heels, Bowl Championship Series, Penn State Nittany Lions

No. 6 North Carolina won ugly, holding off Ohio State 77-73. The Heels look like a team that will go as far as their defense, and one senior stopper, will take them, writes Luke Winn.

Syracuse-UNC and Puerto Rico Tip-Off Highlight Weekend of College Hoops

Syracuse Strives to Knock off National Champ for Second Consecutive Year
Last season, an up-and-coming Syracuse team went to Kansas City, made an unthinkable comeback, and eventually sent the Kansas Jayhawks, the defending champions, to the showers after SU won in its favorite time of day: overtime.
This season, North Carolina may be the defending champs, but the Tar Heels face a challenge similar to the up-hill battle the 'Cuse fought and won last year. The Orange had to invade Jayhawk territory to come away with the CBE Classic Title.
UNC must defeat Jim Boeheim's bunch in SU's home away from home. That's no easy task considering the 'Cuse is 10-2 in its last handful of early-season tournaments that culminated in New York City.
Roy Williams has one of his toughest tasks ahead of him to have his Heels prepared to put points on the board against Syracuse's stingy zone.
Ohio State attempted to stop Carolina's offense in the second half with a sagging 2-3 zone defense, but the Orange will ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Syracuse Orange, North Carolina Tar Heels

UNC PG Larry Drew: 'I'm going to go out and prove people wrong'

No one said replacing Ty Lawson as point guard at North Carolina was going to be easy, and it was anything but that for sophomore Larry Drew on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden. He missed four three throws in the final 49 seconds, but managed to make his final two as the Tar Heels held off a furious rally to defeat Ohio State 77-73 . After scoring 11 points and handing out a team-high eight assists, Drew told Sporting News' Bill Eichenberger that the doubts about him only make him more determined to succeed.
SN: What's it like to be given the keys to this kingdom, the point guard job at Carolina?
LD: "It's an honor, a privilege. I wouldn't quite say that Coach (Roy) Williams gives me the keys. I think I've earned them. I think I deserve them. I feel like I was born to play this position."
SN: In his press conference after the game, Coach Williams was kidding around about how he is on you all the time. How true is that?
  LD: "He's not kidding. I think it's once ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, North Carolina Tar Heels

OSU-UNC: Buckeyes Keep It Close But Fall Short, 77-73

The Buckeyes once again show that they just aren’t ready to compete with college basketball’s elite teams.
On a night where OSU would have to play the perfect game, they were riddled with turnovers and poor shooting. Midway through the second half four Buckeyes had four fouls. All four players were starters and the team quickly found themselves down 19.
They scrapped and clawed their way back, but fell short in the end, 77-73.
The main area of concern for OSU was the post play, and it continued to become a larger concern as both Madsen and Lauderdale combine for six points, seven rebounds, and eight fouls.
Evan Turner once again did all he could to carry the Buckeyes. He was the teams leading scorer with 23 points and eight rebounds. Unfortunately he also led in another category, turnovers. He had 10 to lead all players.
Jon Diebler was a bright spot for OSU at times and ended up with 17 points and four rebounds. His 4-13 shooting performance was his lowest of the season, but he did make ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Ohio State Buckeyes, Evan Turner, Jon Diebler, North Carolina Tar Heels
