After long, cold summer, college basketball tips off Monday

If you've had trouble climbing out of bed on the 216 mornings since North Carolina claimed the NCAA championship, we have a little inspiration for you.
College basketball starts Monday.
There are four official regular season games, and though none will be as memorable as Kentucky-Duke '92, they'll count more than Syracuse-LeMoyne '09.
When we all convene in Indianapolis five months hence for the Final Four, we'll be watching these teams:
Kansas. The Jayhawks open with a greater advantage over the competition than Carolina carried into last season.
Kentucky. They've got to improve fast, but with three players likely headed for the NBA draft—freshmen John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins, junior Patrick Patterson—what choice do they have?
Michigan State. Are the Spartans built to win it all, or just to come close?
North Carolina. Reloading this quickly would represent a major achievement.

Reality Bites and So Does Duke's Offense In Loss to North Carolina

Midnight may have finally chimed for the Cinderella Duke Football team this season.
Another year in the rivalry with North Carolina and another loss. Duke has only won the game one time in the last 19 seasons.
Saturday's loss breaks the Blue Devil's three-game winning streak and most likely ends any hopes they had of planning in the post season.
North Carolina out muscled Duke from the opening kick to the end of the game. If Carolina had any kind of offense themselves they could have put the game away early.
The Blue Devils managed to give the illusion that this game was close, but the fact that they are clearly the worst running team in the country finally caught up with them.
Quarterback Thad Lewis faced pressure and the highly touted Duke passing attack never got off the ground.
Duke's defense was pounded all game by a very physical Tar Heel rushing attack and they had no answer.
Good luck next week against Georgia Tech who likes to run the ball just a bit.
So it is back to the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, North Carolina Tar Heels, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

South Carolina Football Looks to Rebound Against Arkansas on Saturday

Hello and welcome back from your hole, Gamecock fans. Having just crawled out of mine after the horrifying Halloween we just endured, it's time to finally point out the obvious.
Carolina is still an average football team. While it may tease us with tantalizing talent and potential, the team has shown that it can struggle mightily against legitimately good opponents.
After handing out touchdowns to Tennessee like many of us were handing out candy to young'uns this Halloween, the Gamecocks stepped onto their Columbia bound buses with their tails between their legs.
Having spent the weekend in Jacksonville, Fla., taking in my second consecutive Florida/Georgia experience (in a Gamecock jersey, of course) I can honestly say I had a lot on my sports palate that weekend.
However, with the Carolina game on a 7,000-inch flat screen in the Jacksonville Landing, there was nowhere to hide from an eerily bad performance from the Gamecocks.
And while many women at The Landing were enjoying the party ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, South Carolina Gamecocks, Arkansas Razorbacks, North Carolina Tar Heels

UNC gains upper hand on archrival Duke (AP)

For years, everything Duke and North Carolina achieved -- the conference championships, Final Four trips and national titles -- has been connected in a back-and-forth game of one-upmanship. These days the Tar Heels have the upper hand. Since shortly after Roy Williams returned to his alma mater, the Tar Heels have outperformed Mike Krzyzewski's Blue Devils in the long-running race between...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, North Carolina Tar Heels, Roy Williams, Mike Krzyzewski

Quick facts: North Carolina

Coach : Roy Williams (7th year)
Last season's record : 34-4
Spotlight player
There are lots of talented players at North Carolina, but not many who've been consistently productive. One who has is senior Marcus Ginyard—but the catch is that he was productive filling an entirely different role and position than he will this season. Ginyard was a small forward/defensive specialist two seasons ago, before sitting out nearly all of 2008-09 with a foot injury. Back then, he averaged 6.9 points in 28 minutes per game, and it doesn't seem as though this team will function properly if Ginyard delivers a similar output this year. "There's no question this should be seen as a great opportunity for me to go out and showcase some of the things I've been working on for the past couple years—and have the opportunity for that offense to open up," he said.

Reason to hope
The odd reality of North Carolina's season is that this group might have more pure NBA-type talent than the one ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, North Carolina Tar Heels

Freshman Ryan Williams ran for a season-high 179 yards and No. 22 Virginia Tech avoided its first three-game losing streak in six years, holding off East Carolina 16-3 on Thursday night. Tyrod Taylor had a 13-yard touchdown run, Matt Waldron kicked three field goals and Williams atoned for his critical miscue last week against North Carolina by cracking the 1,000-yard mark for the Hokies (6-3).

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, North Carolina Tar Heels, Virginia Tech Hokies

Virginia Tech Fans Losing Interest In The Season

"Another season lost." That's what every Virginia Tech football fan has been saying since the Hokies went down to the 16.5-point underdog that was North Carolina last Thursday night.
After an embarrassing effort in every facet of the game, the Hokies lost their second consecutive game. So, how are fans and students feeling about it.
Well, they're over it. So much so that if you were a visitor to the Virginia Tech campus this week you would have no idea there was a football game this Thursday night.
Granted, the game is being played at East Carolina, but in years past that hasn't mattered.
Students are more excited about their flag football games than watching the Hokies play football. Can you blame them? I can't.
Virginia Tech has played flat in their last two weeks and honestly have looked like they haven't cared about whether they win or lose at certain times throughout those two games.
Frank Beamer continues to preach at his press conferences that the team is practicing hard, and ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Virginia Tech Hokies, North Carolina Tar Heels

Duke's Smith given two-game suspension

Duke guard Nolan Smith will sit out two games because he played in an unsanctioned summer league.

Smith said Tuesday night after the Blue Devils' 84-48 exhibition victory over Findlay that he was suspended because he played a game with overseas players and professionals over the summer near his hometown of Washington, D.C.

The junior will miss the opener against North Carolina-Greensboro on Nov. 13 and a game three nights later against Coastal Carolina.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, North Carolina Tar Heels, Nolan Smith

Roy Williams on revelations in new book

Last April, the day after North Carolina won the national championship in college basketball, I got an e-mail in South Africa from SI senior writer Tim Layden. I was living in Johannesburg for nearly a year while on leave from the college basketball beat, but I had stayed up until 4 a.m. to watch the Tar Heels take apart Michigan State in the title game on ESPN International.

Duke Football Finding Success, Now Must Avoid Setbacks

There is a lot of positive buzz surrounding Duke Football these days.
And really there should be. The team is sporting a winning record and the second-best record in the ACC.
Two ESPN analysts have predicted Duke to be bowl bound.
The Blue Devils even managed to get three votes in the ESPN/USA Today Top-25 Coaches Poll.
So, obviously, some people are beginning to take notice of the program. ESPN even changed its schedules to televise the Duke-UNC matchup on ESPNU this Saturday.
Though there are obvious problems and pitfalls once a team starts to win.
Whether it is the weight of new-found expectations or complacency setting in among players, something typically comes up to rock the boat.
Duke will have to avoid those things if they hope to reach what, at one time, seemed like improbable and unreasonable goals.
But this year at least, Duke has avoided the things that "typical" Duke teams have been unable to do, so perhaps that is a good sign.
Vegas odds makers predicted the Blue ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, North Carolina Tar Heels, ESPN

North Carolina-Duke 2010 : A Rivalry Reborn

The 2009-2010 NCAA basketball season could bring about a rejuvination of the battle on tobacco road.
As if the rivalry has ever calmed down, but no longer does North Carolina bring Tyler Hansbrough and crew with them. Hansbrough has been the target of many insults from the Cameron crazies over the past four seasons, rightfully so as Tyler Hansbrough never experienced a loss at Duke.
Also gone is Duke star Gerald Henderson, who drew the most hatred from the UNC fans for his famous altercation with Tyler Hansbrough, where a questionable elbow broke Hansbrough's nose.
For the first time in several years there is no clear-cut dominate team between the two. If there's an edge at all it could go to Duke.
  North Carolina Preview
North Carolina will be the reigning national champion, but with four of its starting five now in the NBA that leaves plenty of questions for where the production will come from.
Roy Williams once again rebounds with an impressive recruiting class, but until the talent ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, North Carolina Tar Heels

Clemson Win Sheds Light on a Rainy Season

Clemson moves to 5-3 after the big Homecoming win against Coastal Carolina on Saturday. In true Clemson football style it was pouring down rain in Death Valley. This seemed to work in our favor against Coastal, who is not used to the inclement weather and still can not seem to win a game regardless.
Since it was Halloween there were quite a few people dressed up in costumes in the stadium, which made it pretty interesting to people watch. The game looked like it was going to be a shut out, and all though it was all Clemson for four quarters the fans stayed pretty interested.
In Saturday's game three different people threw for a touchdown including Kyle Parker, Jacoby Ford, and Willy Korn. This was the first time since the Tigers' 1984 Homecoming game that three different people threw for a touchdown.
This winning streak has definitely put the Tigers in the right state of mind. The next three games are against ACC teams including next week's night game against Florida State.

Duke Controls Own Destiny in ACC and Beyond on Devil's Night

The strangest things just seem to happen on Halloween.
For Duke Football this Halloween proved to be extra sweet as the Blue Devils extended their ACC winning streak to three games after beating Virginia 28-17.
The win moves Duke (5-3, 3-1) into second place out right in the Coastal Division behind Georgia Tech.
After a field goal duel for most of the game, Duke looked dead in the water and was trailing 17-12 late in the fourth quarter.
But as the Devils have done for much of the year, they rode the arm of quarterback Thad Lewis to victory.
Duke now is only two games away from bowl eligibility with four games remaining. Of those four, two, North Carolina and Wake Forest, are generally considered by many winnable.
What may be the bigger story is that the Blue Devils actually have a chance to win the Coastal Division.

UNC using 6-10 freshman Henson at small forward

                    Mike DeCourcy, Sporting News

Many freshmen are expected to make a profound impact on the 2009-10 season, but only John Henson is likely to begin the season as a starter for the defending NCAA champions.
Henson, a 6-10 forward, is getting most of the run at small forward for North Carolina's first unit. He has the build of former Texas All-American Kevin Durant -- and lived for a time in the Austin area -- so Henson has frequently been compared to the former Longhorn. Henson doesn't shoot the ball like Durant, though, which is why his placement at small forward will be interesting.
Henson is a good enough ballhandler and passer to play on the perimeter. He has a great feel for the game. He'll be asked to defend some shorter players, but the starting small forward for rival Duke, Kyle Singler, almost can look him in the eye. So Henson might be right in his element.
"I would hate playing against John," Tar Heels point guard ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, North Carolina Tar Heels

UNC-Virginia Tech: Tar Heels Steal The Last Bit Of Wind From Hokies' Sails

In a game that saw Virginia Tech's first scoreless half of the season, North Carolina's defense showed up bigger than they have all season. They finally got their first conference win this season. North Carolina's defense looked very similar to their lights-out first half against Florida State a week ago, but this time it was the offense's tempo that kept them in the game. North Carolina seemed to take a break in the third quarter, but managed to get back in the game at exactly the right time to force the game-winning turnover. Virginia Tech's Ryan Williams fumbled the ball with under two minutes to play, setting up a chip-shot field goal as time expired. In a matter of two games, Virginia Tech has gone from National Championship hopefuls and a chance at the ACC Championship Game, to the middle of the pack. After the Georgia Tech loss, they were still hoping to play for an at-large BCS bid, but that hope has now evaporated.
North Carolina was finally able to finish a game, and they ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Virginia Tech Hokies, North Carolina Tar Heels, Butch Davis, Clemson Tigers

College basketball's top 25 is out: Let the debate begin

A year ago, the folks who voted in The Associated Press preseason poll ranked North Carolina as college basketball's No. 1 team, which turned out to be kind of like those 400 points you get on the SAT for spelling your own name correctly.
Their score slipped a bit, however, on account of them picking UCLA No. 4. The Bruins became a No. 6 seed in their NCAA Tournament region.
That's OK. The voters get another shot this year, like every year, and Thursday the AP released the preseason poll for 2009-10 .
But what fun would it be to force you to wait several months to see where they went wrong this time? The football people are always telling us polls are great because they provoke arguments. So let's start the debate here:
They're No. 1: Kansas. The Jayhawks got all but 10 first-place votes, with the largest number of those exceptions belonging to Michigan State. Someone either voted North Carolina first out of habit, respect for last year's winners or honestly believes the Tar Heels will be ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, North Carolina Tar Heels

North Carolina-Virginia Tech: Must Know Facts and Trends

The ACC conference is once again in the spotlight on a Thursday night ESPN game.
This week we see two teams that both have been disappointed so far with their records and are hoping that a late season push will put them back in the ACC title hunt.
Virginia Tech was off last week after a disappointing road loss to Georgia Tech. On the other hand, UNC is coming off a loss last Thursday at home after leading in the third quarter by 18 points.
The winner of this game must forget the recent loss and instead focus on what both teams are saying is a must win.
Oddsmakers have not made this a close line as Virginia Tech is a 15.5-point home favorite. Don't go at it on your own—check out the must know facts and trends from CT Sports Picks lead Handicapper Craig Trapp .
North Carolina comes into this matchup needing a signature win, as to this point they only have one good win against an average UConn team.
Butch Davis thought that his very good defense would be able to hold the huge lead last ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Virginia Tech Hokies, North Carolina Tar Heels

Jesus, Can You Give Penn State a Break?

First of all, give Penn State a break. From the distance, it looked like a cross. It really did. Up close...unless you're around 20 feet in, it still looks like a cross. But really, so what? It's 401 times better than the big blue line down a white helmet, which I swear to God looks like a butt. We realise that you'd had to lay off an old person for about a week because Bobby Bowden actually won a football game this season...against a decent(ish) team in North Carolina. We realise you have nothing else to do. But seriously...shut up. It doesn't matter. The students could do a "Naked Out" for all we cared...if it meant that Penn State beats Ohio State in November. Nice work by the Gopher. Next time you pray, can I suggest you do it AFTER a game?
