Source says Notre Dame QB suffered a black eye

As a tumultuous season draws to a bitter close, Notre Dame and the faces of the football program continue to take hit after hit. And, apparently, in all too literal a sense.

Jimmy Clausen reportedly punched by angry fan

                    Sporting News staff reports

Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen was punched in the face by an angry fan outside a South Bend restaurant, according to two online reports.
ESPN.com, citing "a person briefed on the incident," reports Clausen was "sucker-punched" Sunday morning and has a swollen eye. He is not expected to miss any time because of the injury. The Chicago Tribune reports on its Web site that no police report has been filed.
Clausen reportedly was out with family members and teammates after Notre Dame's Senior Day loss to Connecticut on Saturday. The fan who punched Clausen allegedly said something to Clausen and/or a female acquantaince of his before throwing the punch.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Jimmy Clausen, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Connecticut Huskies

Fight, Two Black Eyes Don't Help Jimmy Clausen's Draft Status

Multiple media outlets are reporting that Notre Dame's junior quarterback Jimmy Clausen took a beating outside a South Bend bar early Sunday morning following ND's 2OT loss to Connecticut.
It is believed that Clausen walked away from the scuffle with two black eyes, but without much dignity.
In addition to speculating about which horrible South Bend bar Clausen chose to frequent in the early hours of Sunday morning (Club 21, Heartland, Corby's, The Linebacker?), or whether he brawled with townies or students, it's important to talk about how this incident might impact Jimmy's projected draft status and ultimately, his decision to stay or remain at Notre Dame for his senior year.
We can expect to find out more in the next few days as students will certainly leak the dirt, but regardless of the details, this is very bad news for the Clausen camp.
On the heels Jay Cutler's prima dona media tour, followed by disastrous on field performance, don't think that NFL GM's won't place an extra emphasis ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Jimmy Clausen, Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Jimmy Clausen: I Am Asking Nicely, Please Leave

Mr. Clausen, this is nothing personal. You did all you could and have played your heart out all year. You made some amazing throws in your three years. You and Golden Tate could make your own highlight reel with some of the plays the two of you made. I will never forget that long bomb in San Antonio against Washington State.
I will never forget your arrival. You showed up in that hummer and waved four fingers indicating four national championships. You were set to follow a very tough act in Brady Quinn. All the hype said that you would be even better than Quinn. I skeptically thought, "I sure hope so."
Now here we are three years later and still no national championships. It isn't all your fault. There were a lot of factors involved. Certainly the offensive line has let you down in alot of ways. Your receivers have let you down lately with key fumbles.
Having said that, it has been three straight games in which you were unable to move the ball with the game on the line in the last minute. I ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Jimmy Clausen, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Charlie Weis

Another Open Letter To Notre Dame Fans From a USC Honk

As some of those who will read this piece know, I have been known in the past to agitate those who follow the Fighting Irish.
However, this was prior to my interaction with those same fans who won me over with their thoughtful and considerate rebuttals to many of the points I had to offer.
I should also point out that I write this article as a humbled USC fan, one who has shared the same kind of disappointment with my team this season as those who follow Notre Dame.
But to the point of this article, I am a bit confused.
Yesterday, Charlie Weis gave an interview in which he said that he would never forgive those fans, and there have been many of them according to Charlie, who have made their attacks personal thus invoking irreparable harm to his wife and son.
Charlie went on to say, and I am paraphrasing here, that those fans have denigrated him about his weight and other various slights regarding his appearance.
These attacks have made life miserable for his family, even prompting his ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Charlie Weis, Southern California Trojans

Notre Dame's Season Ends Not with a Bang, but with a Whimper

While the crowd cheered when the Irish scored and made noise for UConn on third down, it was hollow. For this Fighting Irishman, who attended his first Notre Dame football game at the age of 11 years old, it felt like the next-to-last performance of a burned-out theater troupe—everyone saying their lines and hitting their marks, even as the spark went out of both the actors and the audience. As the game wore on, a deadly, heavy blanket of inevitability descended. By the middle of the third quarter, I knew we would lose this game.
What's left to say? With one game to go, Notre Dame Nation has already turned the page. Jimmy and Golden are as good as gone, and Charlie Weis is a dead man walking. The real driver of the ND story now is not Stanford (we'll get crushed), or even what embarrassing bowl bid the Irish will accept (skip the bowls, stay home, let the pain of this unmitigated disaster sink in, and learn from it). No, now the question is: Who will lead the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame?

Sporting News's bowl projections, Nov. 23

                    Dave Curtis, Sporting News

Saturday's results caused changes from last week's bowl projections . Some shakeups occurred in prominent games. Nebraska, for example, is now projected to play in the Cotton Bowl after clinching the Big 12 North title with a win over Kansas State. Penn State (Orange Bowl) is now slated to be the Big Ten's at-large representative in the BCS after Iowa's uninspiring win over Minnesota. And Notre Dame, which last week was projected to play in the Gator Bowl, might not go to any postseason game after a loss to Connecticut.
Read the rest of SN's projections to see where your team could be playing in December or January.

With rumors swirling about Charlie Weis' future at Notre Dame, Meyer squashed any potential speculation about leaving Gainesville for South Bend.

Meyer's news conference Monday was his most emotional in five seasons at Florida, with the coach having to pause and compose himself several times while talking about quarterback Tim Tebow and other seniors' final home game Saturday against rival Florida State.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators, Urban Meyer, Charlie Weis, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Tim Tebow, Florida State Seminoles

Big East Report Card Week 12: Hallelujah Huskies!!

Cheer, cheer for old....forget that! How about those wonderful, marvelous UConn Huskies? Hope you saw that thriller in South Bend on the grass at hallowed, storied, underachieving Notre Dame. Here's this week's Big East report card from Professor Tom:

  Connecticut (5-5, 1-4) 33, Notre Dame (6-5) 30:
Thrilling, pulsating gem of a college football game. Unheralded underdog UConn goes into Notre Dame and puts the smack down on the Irish. Just call it Rudy in Reverse! Hard to top this, and we'd have to say that it's the Big East Game of the Year to date.
The Huskies had everything going against them in this one. But they refused to lose and it showed. Talk about heart and determination—they had that and more. When Andre Dixon crossed the goal line in the second overtime, UConn came away with the biggest win in the history of its program.
There were plenty of heroes to go around. Credit the UConn defense for making plays when needed. Jordan Todman was amazing with the 96-yard kickoff ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Connecticut Huskies, South Florida Bulls

As of midday Sunday, Charlie Weis had not seen his boss since they occupied the same dour locker room the night before, innards churning as Notre Dame somehow discovered another sub-basement under rock bottom.

Weis could be out at Notre Dame

It appears Notre Dame Charlie Weis can finally see the future of this 6-5 program. And it may not include him.

"If they decide to make a change, I'd have to say I'd have a hard time arguing with that," he said today after Saturday's 33-30 double overtime loss to Connecticut on Senior Day in South Bend. "I'd have a hard time arguing with that because 6-5 is not a good enough especially when you've lost five games by a touchdown and had several three point games that have gone right down to the wire."

Wasn't it Weis who said, "You are what your record says you are" after the school fired Ty Willingham after just three years in 2004 following a 6-5 record?

Wasn't it Weis who hung a banner in the strength and conditioning room that said, "9-3 is not good enough" when he first arrived?

The Irish, who play Stanford in Palo Alto Saturday, are working on a three game losing streak. They are 3-9, 7-6 and 6-5 since the 2007 season. Weis has a 35-26 record in his four plus years under the tarnished ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Stanford Cardinal

What We Learned: Results reflect Weis' inability to motivate

Sporting News' Dave Curtis analyzes what Sunday's buzz means to college football.
Win one for Charlie
Charlie Weis' "tough time arguing" surrender speech Sunday afternoon didn't set up the Irish for a rousing effort Saturday night at Stanford. And although the game with the Cardinal won't save the coach's job, it will highlight an important yet rarely discussed part of the coach—Charlie Weis, the motivator.

The clock is winding down on Charlie Weis; can he keep his players from quitting on Saturday?
Notre Dame has dealt this season with the following deficits in its losses: 14-3 at Michigan, 34-14 to USC, 14-0 against Navy, 27-9 against Pitt. Saturday's early lead in the loss to Connecticut, maybe sparked by a pregame show of support for Weis, represented an anomaly. What to make of the early-game troubles?

Perhaps the Irish can't match the first-half (and third-quarter) intensity of its opponents.

With their coach cooked and their season lost, Notre Dame's ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Charlie Weis, Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Five years ago, Charlie Weis said a 6-5 record wasn't good enough for Notre Dame. The team is 6-5 right now, after another eviscerating home loss Saturday. And, while Weis isn't backing off his initial comments, he did say he wouldn't be surprised if that standard cost him his job.

Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis said he would have a hard time arguing if the school decides to fire him for his 6-5 record, saying it isn't good enough.

He made the comment Sunday after being asked about his quote when he was hired five years ago when he said 6-5 wasn't good enough. That's what Notre Dame's record was when Tyrone Willingham was fired and that's the school's record again after a double overtime 33-30 loss Saturday to Connecticut (5-5) on Saturday.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Charlie Weis, Tyrone Willingham

Why Wait? Notre Dame, Jack Swarbrick Need to Fire Charlie Weis Now

With each passing week, rumors and speculations grow on who will take over as the newest head football coach for the most watched, scrutinized, hated, and loved team in the country.
Although many believed even before Notre Dame's Saturday afternoon overtime loss to Connecticut that Charlie Weis was as good as gone, this one leaves very few, if any, supporters of him in South Bend.
Entering the stadium, arm in arm with his captains and his football team behind him, Weis supplied a watery-eyed moment as he took the field for maybe his last time in South Bend.
Does he already know what lies ahead in the next week or so?
Some say yes.
Rumors were making their way through the Notre Dame community before the game that Weis had told his team he had planned to resign after the Stanford game. Even if that appears to now be false, the entrance itself showed a coach that seemed like he had nothing left in him.
After the game, Weis was seen again sporting the waterworks during the Irish alma mater ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Charlie Weis, Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Fire Charlie Weis Already, but Enough with the Hate!

Obviously a coaching change is what really needs to happen at the University of Notre Dame, but can we refrain from the name-calling?
Every time I look at the articles being written about Charlie Weis and his future at Notre Dame, I look at the comments posted by people around the country and am appalled at the things being said. Weis may be a little arrogant and may not be the best coach for the Irish, but what does his personal appearance have to do with anything?
I thought it was very moving yesterday that 33 fourth- and fifth-year seniors came out of the tunnel and gave him the respect he deserved. Obviously these young men have a lot of respect for the man, and by the tears in Weis' eyes you could tell how he feels about them.
Whether you are a fan or not, you can't knock his abilities at recruiting. Weis has done a fantastic job bringing in top recruits from across the country. He has also maintained an excellent graduation rate (96 percent), which a lot of top football schools can not ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Charlie Weis, Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Connecticut Is Unable to Give the Game to Notre Dame

When the schedule came out for Notre Dame, the Connecticut game looked to be one that would be quite winnable. Unfortunately, this is the same program that has struggled with Navy and Syracuse.
On paper, the Irish just outmatched the Huskies. In fact, their quarterback Zach Frazier transferred to Connecticut because he couldn't beat out Jimmy Clausen for the starting job.
The way Notre Dame started the game, an Irish victory seemed imminent. The Irish came out clicking on all cylinders and got off to a 14-0 lead.
If a 14-0 lead doesn't make victory seem like a certainly, what if I told you that this Husky team with inferior talent would throw an interception in the end zone?
What if I told you that they would also have not one, but two touchdowns called back by holding penalties?
What if I also said that the kicker would miss a kick at the end of the game?
With all those things, there is no way this team would lose, right? Again though, this is the same program that can't beat Navy and ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Connecticut Huskies, Jimmy Clausen, Charlie Weis

It seems inevitable Charlie Weis won't be patrolling the sideline for Notre Dame in 2010. Brian Hamilton takes a look at candidates to take his place.

After double-overtime loss to Connecticut, the Fighting Irish coach's career record dropped to 35-26, giving him a lower winning percentage than that of his predecessor, Tyrone Willingham.

If the past is any indicator, Charlie Weis shouldn't be surprised if his career is over at Notre Dame.

Hot in the headset: Which coaches helped themselves?

The final weeks of the season mean money time for college coaches. Lucrative extensions and bonuses — or better-paying jobs — for the successful; pink slips for the ineffective.
Here's a coaching roll call from Saturday — those who helped themselves (and their wallets), and those with a long week ahead:
The Winners
  • Chip Kelly, Oregon. Move over, Iron Bowl. The Civil War ranks as this year's coolest rivalry showdown, thanks in large part to Kelly keeping the Ducks afloat after losses at Boise State and Stanford. If UO beats Oregon State on Dec. 3 at Autzen Stadium, Kelly's rookie head coaching season ends in a Rose Bowl.
  • Dabo Swinney, Clemson. Published reports indicate the ACC Atlantic Division title the Tigers clinched Saturday will double Swinney's $800,000 salary. Not bad for a guy who was an unknown wide receivers coach 13 months ago. "We're happy today," he told reporters after his team's win over Virginia. "But we're not done yet." ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oregon Ducks, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Clemson Tigers, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Kansas Jayhawks, Michigan Wolverines

Come To Think Of It: Notre Dame's Charlie Weis Will Be Fired

Saturday's stunning loss to UConn has sealed the fate of Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis, who has likely coached his last home game for the Irish.
Despite a show of support for their coach by the seniors prior to the game, Weis will be gone following the season.
"It was an idea that myself and two other guys had," quarterback Jimmy Clausen said. "It was Senior Day, but coach Weis has gone through a lot, and we're behind him 110 percent. And that's what we were trying to do today."
Weis had nothing to gain by beating UConn, really. But by losing, for the third straight week and for the second consecutive year to a Big East team on Senior Day, he surrendered all chance of returning for a sixth season.
As ESPN.com has reported, Unlike previous difficult losses, athletic director Jack Swarbrick didn't come into the media room after the game to answer questions. There was no need. Swarbrick has insisted that he will evaluate Weis at the end of the season and won't make any announcements ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Charlie Weis, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Jimmy Clausen, Connecticut Huskies

Once again, Notre Dame disappoints

Double-overtime loss another blow to embattled coach Charlie Weis
                         >

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- If this was the end, and it almost certainly was, it bore all the expected markings. A 33-30 double-overtime loss to Connecticut clobbered Notre Dame with another percussive blow of disbelief, another faith-shattering moment heaved onto a stockpile now five years high.

UConn Huskies, You're the Best!

Congrats, UConn, you're the best!
The Big East is oh so very proud of you.
Anyone who loves college football should be so very proud of you.
You showed us what heart and persistence are all about.
You took down mighty Notre Dame and you did it in such stunning fashion.
You did it under such very difficult circumstances.
You got it, 33-30, double overtime.
Randy Edsall, you're the best, you were so poised and summed it up so well at the end:
"For us, little-known Connecticut to come in here and beat this storied program. God bless Jazz and his family and these kids for what they've done."
UConn's biggest win...EVER!
