Ole Miss, Cal, UNC back in AP Top 25

Mississippi, California and North Carolina have surged back into the AP Top 25 college football poll.

There was little change, however, at the top of The Associated Press rankings after a weekend when most of the highly ranked teams had easy victories or time off.

No. 1 Florida is followed by fellow unbeatens Alabama, Texas, TCU, Cincinnati and Boise State. Also holding their places were No. 7 Georgia Tech, No. 8 Pittsburgh and No. 9 Ohio State.

The only change in the top 10 came at No. 10.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ole Miss Rebels, North Carolina Tar Heels, Boise State Broncos, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State's Kurt Coleman: 'I was just reading Tate the whole time'

Ohio State safety Kurt Coleman's career will culminate in classic Buckeye fashion. He picked off two passes in his last Big Ten game, a 21-10 victory over Michigan in The Big House. And his final college game will come New Year's Day in the Rose Bowl against the Pac-10 champion. Coleman spoke with reporters, including Sporting News ' Dave Curtis:
Q: What was it about the defense today, forcing turnovers in the red zone?
Kurt Coleman: We had a motto of bend but don't break. Every time we get in the red zone, we've had a higher awareness. We've just been fortunate enough to make the plays when we need them.
Q: Is it a different mentality? You guys didn't force this many turnovers last year.
KC: We've been wanting to get after the quarterback and after the ball. We've been practicing going out and attacking the ball, and it's showing on the field
Q: Will you take us through the second interception, along the sideline?
KC: We brought a corner blitz off the edge, and the safety ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ohio State Buckeyes, Kurt Coleman, Michigan Wolverines

Jim Tressel's Ohio State Legacy Will Be As a Winner, Though It's Rarely Flashy

The Ohio State Buckeyes once again beat their arch rivals from Michigan 21-10, in a classic example of how the Buckeyes have played in the Jim Tressel era.
The game was won by the Buckeyes controlling the ground game, special teams, and creating turnovers.
And regardless of what people think about Jim Tressel, one cannot deny his track record with now seven BCS games in nine years as a coach.
In addition, the team has won or shared five straight Big Ten titles, something that has to be recognized regardless of the strength of the conference.
There is no doubt Tresselball is not pretty by any stretch, but it just wins.
He has been able to take teams that have lost a lot of talent and just reload and plug the next guys in without losing too much of a step.
And most importantly to Buckeye fans, he has beaten Michigan.
In his nine years at the helm in Columbus, Tressel has beaten the Wolverines eight times, including the last six in a row, something not even Woody Hayes could ever do.

3-Pointers: Ohio State's Turner is getting the point

Sporting News' Mike DeCourcy analyzes what Saturday's buzz means to college basketball.

Point-less
The condemnations of Ohio State's Evan Turner as a point guard began trickling in after his first rough game at the position — a game in which he scored 23 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and passed for four assists, by the way.
Goodness. If that's the curve these folks are using to grade Turner, I'm glad none of them taught me at Point Park College.
Faced with excellent defensive pressure from Ginyard — and a Roy Williams game plan that collapsed big defenders around him on every penetration — Turner turned over the ball 10 times. It wasn't a good performance.
He came back Friday, though, and put 26 points, 14 rebounds and six assists on California, while turning over the ball four times. Which means after four games he is averaging 21.8 points, 14.8 rebounds and six assists. He is shooting 59.3 percent from the field.
He's putting up numbers like that after two gimmes and ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Ohio State Buckeyes, North Carolina Tar Heels, Arizona State Sun Devils, Evan Turner

Stewart Mandel: Contrast between Michigan, Ohio State has rarely seemed so sharp

It was another sad day for Michigan fans. Ohio State's methodical 21-10 win over the Wolverines expanded the already significant gap between the two programs, says Stewart Mandel.

Michigan fans show discontent by not showing up

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Every other year, this town hosts a color war on the third Saturday of November. The 2009 version came with a twist – Michigan maize didn't overwhelm Ohio State scarlet.
Along South Main Street, the main drag outside Michigan Stadium, each group of tailgating Wolverines fans was matched by a road-tripping crew of Buckeyes. Inside the Big House, the OSU colors, like chunks of tomato in a bowl of corn, stood out as much as any time in decades.
That scene greeted Coach Rich Rodriguez here Saturday, providing more evidence that public opinion remains his No. 1 enemy in this town. And by the end of another loss to rival OSU, this one 21-10, those disgruntled fans owned more reason to be down on this program.
Forget the details – Michigan again couldn't stop the run, again got shoddy quarterback play, again allowed turnovers to destroy its best offensive opportunities. The three-and-a-half hours taken alone, the Wolverines showed decent spirit and vigor by staying ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines, Ohio State Buckeyes, Rich Rodriguez, Central Michigan Chippewas

A Wolverine Victory Over Ohio State Changes the Outlook on Everything

After a red-hot 4-0 start, Michigan's season has just gone downhill since the Michigan State game. Since that time Michigan has gone just 1-6. That one win was against Delaware State.
In 2009, the Wolverines are 4-0 in non-conference games. However, within the Big Ten they have only beaten Indiana and that took a comeback.
Michigan has been blown out by Penn State, Illinois, and Purdue. Based on all that, there really seems no way that Michigan can honestly look at this season as a success.
That would be true except for one thing. They end the season today, and as always, they end it against Ohio State. At the start of any season, beating the Buckeyes is of utmost importance and at the top of the priority list. Ohio State has the same priorities.
For Michigan and Ohio State, the records never mean anything because this game is more important than winning the Big Ten, going to the Rose Bowl, and winning a National Championship.
Unfortunately for Michigan, Ohio State has won five straight ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines, Ohio State Buckeyes

Cal's Jerome Randle: 'We are going to get our guys back and roll'

Don't dismiss California, the preseason pick to win the Pacific-10, as a player on the national stage after consecutive defeats to Syracuse and Ohio State at Madison Square Garden. That's the message senior point Jerome Randle delivered to Sporting News' Bill Eichenberger after scoring a team-high 26 points in Friday's 76-70 loss to the Buckeyes in the consolation round of the 2K Classic.
SN: How frustrating is it to not get a victory playing on this national stage?
JR: "It's not frustrating at all. We were down two very important pieces to the puzzle (leading scorer Theo Robertson and junor forward Harper Kamp, both sidelined with injuries). Because of the injuries, we had guys playing in positions they never thought they would be playing in."
SN:So you remain optimistic about this team's chances heading into Pac-10 play?
JR: "It's still early in the year. I'm not really worried about the outcome of the season. I know we are going to have a great season. We are going to get ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Jerome Randle, California Golden Bears, Ohio State Buckeyes, Syracuse Orange

Ohio State's Pryor On The Verge of a Breakthrough

Does the Terelle Pryor saga have a bit of déjà vu? If not, listen again:
A highly touted auarterback at a University rich in football tradition is up and down early in his career, much to the frustration of his rabid fan base.
As his sophomore season winds down, however, the QB starts to put it together. While he loses the chance to play for a national championship, he rebounds and leads his team to the Rose Bowl.
There, in front of a National audience, he leads his team to victory in dazzling fashion. Making his team a national title favorite at the outset of the following season.
If this story sounds too good to be true for Buckeye fans, they should be excited to know it has happened before.
The story I told is actually about former Longhorn QB Vince Young. Who parlayed a decent sophomore season into an all-time National Championship season as a junior in 2006.
It is amazing, as the Buckeyes play for the shot at the Rose Bowl, to see the similiarities in the two QB's.
Both have been ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ohio State Buckeyes, Terrelle Pryor

Ohio State Buckeyes-Cal Bears: OSU Rebounds with Impressive Win, 76-70

Ohio State bounced back after a scrappy performance against North Carolina last night by defeating No. 12 California, 76-70. The Buckeyes dominated the paint, something they couldn’t do last night, on their way to a win in Madison Square Garden.
Dallas Lauderdale was the catalyst for this defensive performance with eight points, five rebounds, and a career-high seven blocks. Evan Turner once again put on a clinic with another double-double. He had 26 points and 14 rebounds, along with six assists.
Last night he had 10 turnovers in a frustrating performance for the Buckeye guard; tonight he held it to four, all of which were in the second half.
The Buckeyes' starters did their part of the scoring tonight. Jon Diebler had 14 points, most of which were from his improved three-point shooting. William Buford had 12, and David Lighty added 11 for a Buckeye team that found its shooting touch after a poor performance last night.
Ohio State shot 50 percent from the field, including 40 percent from ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Ohio State Buckeyes, Evan Turner, Jon Diebler, Thad Matta

Even the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry is not demanding the attention its commanded in past years, due to a struggling Michigan team. Although your eyes may not be glued to the television Saturday, there are a few story lines that you have to keep your eyes on. Here are the top five questions that will answered this week in college football when its all said and done.
Don't count on a Saturday snoozefest

These are the bland Saturdays when no one is safe.
No, really.
How often have we seen this is the past: the relatively uneventful developing into the remarkably significant.
Even No. 1 Florida, playing host to cupcake Florida International, isn't immune at this late stage of the season.
"We know what's on the line," Florida linebacker Ryan Stamper said. "We're going hard."
Maybe it's some cosmic balance in response to the wild weekends of the last three years, but just when you think 2009 couldn't be more predictable we give you these six wild possibilities (ranked in order of likelihood it will happen) that could develop Saturday:
  1. A Stanford player wins the Heisman Trophy
How it can happen: Hey, it has happened before (Jim Plunkett, 1970), why not again? No BCS league tailback has more yards (1,395) or touchdowns (19) than Toby Gerhart, who has surged to the top of Heisman ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines, Oregon Ducks, Ohio State Buckeyes, Texas Longhorns, Stanford Cardinal, Kansas State Wildcats

To Right The Ship This Week There Are 5 Basics That Michigan Learn

Two-a-day practices in August, offseason conditioning, the basics. What do they have to do with this week's Ohio State-Michigan game? Simple, Michigan must do the little things correctly. With six straight conference losses an a bowl birth on the line, Michigan must return to the basics.
  1. Run Blocking
In the six straight conference losses, Michigan has averaged, 1.0, 4.3, 2.8, 2.6, 4.9 and 2.2 yards rushing respectively in those six losses. That is just not good enough to get the job done. The Wolverine offensive line must be consistent in getting off the ball and getting good blocks on the Ohio State front seven. If they can do this they will take some pressure off of the passing game.

  2. Pass Blocking
In the six straight conference losses, Michigan has given up 3, 1, 5, 4, 5 and 2 sacks respectively. This is outrageous. Michign's offensive line must hold up at the point of attack. This is going to be an especially tall order this weekend with an Ohio State defense that is without ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan Wolverines, Ohio State Buckeyes

Hayes' Week 12 picks: Ohio State dominance over Michigan will continue

Sporting News' Matt Hayes picks the 10 best games of the weekend and throws in his upset pick of the week as a bonus.
Ohio State 27, Michigan 14: This will be another Buckeyes-Wolverines game in the mold of yesteryear: Neither team can throw the ball, and one team plays better defense.
Iowa 20, Minnesota 10: Iowa has gone from the national championship conversation to Capital One Bowl talk in three weeks. A win would significantly improve Iowa's BCS hopes.
North Carolina 24, Boston College 23: Imagine what could have been for UNC if not for two horrible home losses to Virginia and FSU. The Heels would be playing for an at-large BCS bowl spot.
Oklahoma 31, Texas Tech 28: This matchup is a microcosm of the crazy season in the Big 12: Two teams with a handful of odd losses are scrambling for eight-win regular seasons.
Notre Dame 31, UConn 28: These are two teams with too many off-field distractions, but one offense is more balanced than the other.
  LSU 19, Mississippi 16: The ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ohio State Buckeyes, Michigan Wolverines, North Carolina Tar Heels, Bowl Championship Series, Penn State Nittany Lions

The 10 Wealthiest and Most Recognizable Teams in College Football

In addition to using statistics from two sources, I will use my own perception of teams' national image to rank the top 10 wealthiest and most recognizable brands in college football.

The two sources I will compile important statistics from include the following:

(1) The Equity in Athletics report from the U.S. Department of Education

Using the data from this site, I will report how much each of my top 10 generated in football revenues.

(2) The Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC)

On November 11, 2009, the Collegiate Licensing Company released their list of the top selling universities in collegiate gear, apparel, etc. While CLC does not represent schools, such as Ohio State or Southern California, I will utilize it's rankings of the top selling brands.

Ohio State Football: Why Chris Spielman Is My All-Time Favorite Buckeye

Ohio State football fans admire and respect players for various reasons. Attend any Ohio State game and you will see fans wearing the jersey numbers of current players such as Terrelle Pryor and Dane Sanzenbacher, as well as former players such as Archie Griffin or James Laurinaitis. My favorite Ohio State player, past or present, is Chris Spielman. Spielman played linebacker for Ohio State from 1984-1987, and is arguably the best linebacker in the history of Ohio State football. Chris Spielman's passion and intensity on the football field were something to behold. Even though Spielman was not the biggest or fastest linebacker, few had Spielman's natural football instincts to find the ball and make the play. While Chris Spielman's football talents are something to continue to admire, my respect for Chris Spielman has nothing to do with football whatsoever. The reason why Chris Spielman is the Buckeye I admire the most is because of his devotion to his wife and family. In 1998, Chris ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ohio State Buckeyes

The Game has lost a lot of luster. Ohio State has beaten Michigan five straight times, its best winning streak and the longest in the series since the 1920s. The ninth-ranked Buckeyes (9-2, 6-2 Big Ten) have already clinched at least a share of their fifth straight conference title and a spot in the Rose Bowl.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ohio State Buckeyes, Michigan Wolverines
