The Doc’s Diagnosis: Insanity Abounds as USC Ranked Above Oklahoma, Florida

For some time now, college football fans have noted a strange and unhealthy affinity for the University of Southern California in the national media.
It seems that no matter how many times the Trojans lose to their cupcake “competition” in the Pac-10, the media nevertheless lines up in droves to praise USC. Indeed, notwithstanding the Trojans' loss to unranked Oregon State, media voters in the AP Poll have USC inexplicably ranked at No. 6, directly ahead of three unbeaten teams and a Georgia squad whose only loss was to No. 2 Alabama, and eight spots ahead of unbeaten Utah, whose wins include one over Oregon State. The media’s unnatural obsession with USC is old news; the problem is that it seems to be a contagious condition. The coaches from the USA Today poll now have USC ranked at No. 4 (4!), ahead of the likes of Oklahoma, Georgia and Florida. Let’s examine a few of the schools that the coaches have ranked below Southern Cal.
LSU (Ranked No. 14) Sure, the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Southern California Trojans, Florida Gators, Oklahoma Sooners, Oregon State Beavers

Why Coaches Should Coach and Media Should Vote

After yet another amazing Saturday of upsets in the college football world, the new batch of rankings came out on Sunday. The Associated Press poll, the first to be released Sunday morning, looks like this:
1. Texas (39) 1599 2. Alabama (26) 1582 3. Penn State 1492 4. Oklahoma 1306 5. Florida 1284 6. USC 1247 7. Texas Tech 1210 8. Oklahoma State 1184 9. BYU 1131 10. Georgia 1081
Next up was the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll, the one of the two that is actually used in the uber-confusing BCS system. The Coaches Poll looks like this:
1. Texas (44) 1505 2. Alabama (14) 1452 3. Penn State (3) 1416 4. USC 1198 5. Texas Tech 1195 6. Oklahoma 1147 7. Florida 1145 8. BYU 1143 9. Georgia 1010 10. Oklahoma State 958
The top and bottom three of each poll's top ten is not the problem. As of today, no one can argue that Texas, Alabama, and Penn State are not three of the best teams in the country.
On the same hand, Oklahoma State, Georgia, and BYU deserve to be in the top ten...but not ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oklahoma Sooners, Southern California Trojans, Texas Tech Red Raiders, Penn State Nittany Lions, Oklahoma State Cowboys

Stoop-ified Over Oklahoma's Big Game Struggles

Let’s get this out of the way: I’m not a fan of OU. I don’t dislike them I’m just indifferent. That indifference extends throughout the Big 12, so I feel like I’m a pretty objective observer of Big 12 football. As far as fanaticism, I expel most of my unreasonable reactions while watching the Red Sox. So even though I pull for Florida State, I feel like I see things pretty clearly within college football. With that being said, I’m at the end of my rope. I’m not mad. I’m not raising my voice; I didn’t lose any money or anything like that. I feel like most people felt at the end of Cloverfield: I just want some answers. It’s more like an X-Files thing as this point. Why do Sooners refuse to show up in big games? Under Stoops, the Oklahoma Sooners have established themselves as a member of the NCAA elite. I would venture to say that Stoops would make most everyone’s top-10 coaching lists, but yet his teams have this really off-putting ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oklahoma Sooners, Bob Stoops

The New Top 25: The Sooners Stoop Down

Are you getting tired of this like I am? I know college football is exciting, but couldn’t we have just one week when there are only a couple of upsets and not a whole slew of them?
It seems like every week I have to change the entire Top 25. There are more pops and drops among the ranked teams than in the Dow 30.

Anyway, here we go.
Popping up is my new Number One—Texas—with a convincing comeback-win against the previous Number One—the Oklahoma Sooners. Also popping up behind Texas is Penn State, crushing Wisconsin and Florida, doing the same to last year’s BCS champion, LSU.
Other teams popping up in the Top Ten are Alabama, USC, Texas Tech, BYU, Oklahoma State, and Ohio State.
Popping into the Top 25 are Wake Forrest, Ball State (7-0), North Carolina and Minnesota, by default.
Dropping out of the Top 10 are Oklahoma (11) and LSU (15) while Missouri dropped down to Number Nine.
Dropping out of the Top 25 are Wisconsin (17) crushed by Penn State, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oklahoma Sooners, Penn State Nittany Lions, Southern California Trojans, Texas Tech Red Raiders, Oklahoma State Cowboys

Texas-Oklahoma Weekend: A House Painted Orange

This is a follow up to my previous article, Texas-Oklahoma Weekend: A House divided .
Hear ye! Hear Ye!
Let me yell it from the mountain tops. Texas has knocked off OU.
Yes, folks, it is true. Today this house divided has turned burnt orange. While this is a great victory and I have been bragging endlessly, I can't help but feel a bitter chill in the air.
She is not happy, and I probably got a little personal. But today, I don't care. Today, my little misses showed her true colors and showed me, she can dish it out with the best of them, but she doesn't take it very well when it's thrown back at her.
I had to hear it all week from my wife and her family. So today when we went to her dad's house, I made sure that I yelled and cheered extra loud. And today I got my wish, for once I got to be the one cheering the loudest in a hostile environment.
Since the end of the game, my wife has been very quiet and sulky. So I probably have bought myself another night or two on the couch, but I ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma Sooners

Top-Ranked Oklahoma Stunned By Colt McCoy's Texas Longhorns

In Lubbock, Texas and Austin, Texas, it's all good. Today, the Texas Longhorns went on the road to defeat the top-ranked Oklahoma Sooners, 45-35.
Colt McCoy tore up a pretty good Oklahoma secondary. He was 28-for-36 with 277 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. For the game, he had a 77.8 completion percentage.
Sam Bradford was no bum. The Oklahoma quarterback had 385 yards on 28-of-39 passes. Oh by the way, he had five touchdown passes and one interception.
But this seemed to be Colt's day.
For most of the game, the Sooners were in control. They were going blow-for-blow. Oklahoma scored early and didn't look to miss a beat.
The first touchdown was one of three Manuel Johnson touchdown catches, this one from five yards away. The Longhorns didn't back down, but didn't get seven. They got three on the ensuing drive.
Every time Texas scored, it seemed Oklahoma would come right back. Or vice versa.
After a eight-yard touchdown pass from Sam Bradford to Ryan Broiles, stud wide receiver ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma Sooners, Colt McCoy

Texas Shocks Oklahoma: Instant Reaction

What a fantastic game between the Horns and the Sooners. Texas wins 45-35 in the highest scoring game in the history of the Texas-OU series. Here’s a quick breakdown of what I saw:

Sam Bradford is the best QB I’ve seen in a college game since Matt Leinart. There weren’t many throws he couldn’t make, and he has a ridiculously quick release and is very accurate. He fought to the end, and shredded a (still I think underrated) D for 387 yards and five TDs. Chase Daniel is going to be incredibly tough next week as well, as he might be even better, though that’s hard to say after Bradford’s effort.
Colt McCoy has all the heart, toughness, and savvy you’d ever want in a player, and his effort (277 yards passing, 34 rushing) and resiliency in playing from behind for nearly 40 minutes against the No. 1 team in the country is worthy of praise of legend. I don’t know if UT fans can boo him ever again, unless he gets another concussion, of course. Also, he ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma Sooners, Colt McCoy

Texas Crucifies the Bob Stoops Curse

Today, Mack Brown's Texas program triumphed its third time in four tries over Bob Stoops' Sooners, this time with the latter as the top team in the country. The talking heads' familiar refrain of "Stoops being in Mack's head" can be put to rest, if it hadn't been already.
For several years, all Texas Longhorn fans seemed to hear was how OU had their number, how the Sooners (though no more talented) possessed a huge edge in the mind. Considering Oklahoma's five-game dominance, the on-field results made that case well enough.
No more. While the Longhorns rolled the Sooners in 2005 under Vince Young's leadership, 45-12, the mileage gained off a second straight win in '06 under Colt McCoy was nullified by a late-season collapse that left Bob Stoops' program again on top in the Big 12.
Last year's game was a see-saw affair that saw OU come away with a narrow 28-21 advantage, causing many to automatically start the Stoops over Mack song. Again, with Oklahoma once more capturing the conference ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Texas Longhorns, Bob Stoops, Oklahoma Sooners, Mack Brown

The Legend of Colt McCoy: The Sheriff's Leading Texas to Promised Land

It was high noon at the state fair. They all were outside in the noonday sun when someone heard Colt speak up.
"This fair isn't big enough for the two of us," he exclaimed! "You got three hours to get out of town, Sooners. I have not had a Dr Pepper since I was 16, and I'm pretty thristy. After this shootout, the milk's on me, boys!"
And so the legend was born. Another No. 1 heads for boot hill!
With guns blazing (or should I say arm slinging?) McCoy went 28-of-36 passing for 277 yards and 31 more on the ground as he ran the Sooners out of Texas.
Colt's deputies, namely the defense and Chris Ogbonnaya, held up their end of the fight.
The defense stopped the Sooners from making a run at the Longhorns in the second half with some big runs and big third-down stops. That includes stopping the punter from making a first down with 8:32 left in the game by a half-yard. Ogbonnaya had some big runs in the fourth quarter after a slow start to finish with 129 yards on the ground.
Texas should jump ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Texas Longhorns, Colt McCoy, Oklahoma Sooners, Missouri Tigers

Texas Takes Down Oklahoma; Was it Impressive?

As some of you by now, the No. 5 Texas Longhorns have beaten the No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners 45-35, and I couldn't be happier. I am not a Texas fan, but I really wanted this and today I pulled for the Longhorns.
You may be wondering why I pulled for them if I wasn't a fan, well I knew that if they lost, a SEC team like my Alabama Crimson Tide would probably move to the top; they are not playing today but its possible.
Anyway to Texas-Oklahoma; it was so high scoring, wow, and a nail-biter until the end, Oklahoma dominated the first quarter, but the second quarter here came Colt McCoy and the Longhorns. they got to within a point at half time to the Sooners.
It was a good half in my opinion for them, but then in the second half there were a lot of bogus calls by the refs. They really made them all game but the second half was the worst.
I mean they called a hit out of bounds on the same guy twice for once grazing him, and second for trying to help him from falling, but Colt McCoy really acts it out ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma Sooners, Colt McCoy

Pac-10 Refs Mysteriously Show up at Red River Rivalry Game

What in Bevo is going on here?
Hey, refs occasionally get some calls wrong, but this team of Red River Rivalry officials (why the heck did they take out "Shootout" in the title of this game?) were marching to the tune of Three Blind Mice.
This is a huge game with title game implications and the refs did everything possible to eff it up. Yup, the Pac-10 officiating crew must have heard there was a really good game on in Dallas, and switched places with the Big XII refs.
I would love to see this trio get marched out to center field with the Benny Hill theme song playing in the background, and have Bevo brand their butts while Boomer and Sooner use them as a kitty litter tray.
Why the tirade, you ask?
Oklahoma was penalized for at least one bad personal foul call. Lewis was called for a late hit out of bounds when clearly, he was trying to hold up a Longhorn from getting hurt.
Can't the refs recognize a clear-cut case of football chivalry? Apparently not, they were too ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oklahoma Sooners, Texas Longhorns, Bob Stoops, Mack Brown

NCAA Football Has a New Rule to Put into Place

The NCAA is going to have to reexamine the rule for the penalty for running into the kicker or even roughing the kicker.
In today's Oklahoma vs. Texas game, the Sooners' Mike Knall was back to punt, and a Texas defender jumped to block, barely making any contact with Knall.
There was barely any contact on the punter, and there definitely wasn't enough to knock him to the turf, definitely not enough contact to warrant a penalty.
Yet, since he fell to the turf, acting like he was injured. The penalty flag was thrown, and Oklahoma was able to keep the drive alive and score a touchdown.
The reason the penalty was thrown was because Knall was acting. This is the same issue the NBA is facing, with players flopping to try to get an offensive foul.
Now in football, you're having punters fake like they were being run into, so their offense can stay on the field. Well that's the hope of the acting.
I was watching a 49ers game where the punter tried to get a penalty, but the official didn't buy ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma Sooners

What Texas (and Oklahoma) Fans Should Watch for in the Red River Rivalry

The Texas Longhorns-Oklahoma Sooners rivalry has been battled since 1900, and has lived through some great moments.
In recent memory, Sooner fans will remember Roy Williams diving over the line to help create a game-deciding interception in a 2001 victory.
Texas fans will remember Rodrique Wright in a sundial-timed sprint to the end zone in a 45-12 bashing on its way to a 2005 National Championship.
Here's a hint of what to expect Saturday in the Red River Rivalry/Shootout/Battle of I-35/Battle for the Golden Hat/Border War (further South edition):

Corn dogs. Lots and lots of corn dogs. The State Fair is in town for its annual celebration, which always runs simultaneous to the game. Expect a long, unexpected list of things being fried that you never thought would be fried (like Coke balls, Twinkies).
Tunnel mishaps. Both teams enter from the same side, and there's always a shouting match, often harmless, but shoving is allowed.
Hype. Although it's been four years since both teams ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma Sooners

The Scarlet Letter(s): A Football Analysis

I just completed a week of literary analysis in my AP English class. I was charged with criticizing a critic's criticism of Nathaniel Hawthorne's, The Scarlet Letter .
The criticism argued that Hawthorne was a feminist activist. Many of his main characters are women, and that has led many to believe that he promotes strong and independent women coming to the forefront in society.
The critic goes on to say that...bored yet?
The only Scarlet Letter, or letters I should say, that the Texas Longhorns will be focusing on this weekend are O and U.
The Longhorns are faced with the task of stopping college football's best team, the Oklahoma Sooners, on Saturday when they meet in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas for their annual grudge match.
OU boasts one of the nation's most high-octane offenses, scoring 49 points per game and over 550 yards of offense.
The offense is led by sophomore QB Sam Bradford, who has thrown for 1,665 yards and 18 touchdowns to only three ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma Sooners, Colt McCoy, Mack Brown

If the Texas-Oklahoma series were only about the sights, sounds and smells of their annual matchup at the Cotton Bowl, it would still be a lot of fun. Week 6 of the college football season is a wrap. Here at Walker-Sports, our College Football Pick’em teams left a little bit to be desired last week. However, that is what is to be expected when you go out and make a lot of underdog picks. Nonetheless, we man up to our picks and we claim them even if they are bad.
Ohio State 20 vs. Wisconsin 17 : Nothing like a little magic from your stud freshman to lock up a must-win conference game on the road. And it must be pretty nice to have the services of Beanie Wells at your disposal as well.
USC 44 vs. Oregon 10 : The spread was 16, but the Trojans were out for revenge. USC came out and showed why they should still be considered among the nation's elite teams.
Vanderbilt 14 vs. Auburn 13 : I don’t believe that Vanderbilt is the real deal. I do think that Auburn’s offense is ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oklahoma Sooners, Bob Stoops, Southern California Trojans

For the record, he hasn't. The only corn dog he's had was back in his hometown of Cookeville, Tenn.
Oklahoma-Texas: Sooners’ Backfield Ready to Explode

While the Oklahoma Sooners juggernaut continues to roll, adjustments continue to take place. Through Oklahoma’s first three games it appeared their rushing attack was unstoppable, averaging over 217 yards per game. But along came the TCU defense, holding the Sooners’ rushing game to only 25 yards.
What should make Sooner fans nervous is that the Texas defense is very similar to TCU’s against the run. But don’t count Oklahoma’s running backs out just yet.
After the TCU game (the Sooners still won 35-10 on the arm of QB Sam Bradford), the running backs put up 217 yards against Baylor. All three running backs—Chris Brown, DeMarco Murray, and Mossis Madu—contributed to the resurgence.
This Saturday will give them their biggest test to date, going up against one of the nation’s top defensive lines in Texas.
The Texas defense so far this season has been spectacular against the run, only allowing their opponents 259 yards ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oklahoma Sooners, Texas Longhorns

Big 12 Power Rankings (as of Oct. 8, 2008)

  1. Oklahoma (Record: 5-0, AP Rank: 1)

So far, so good for Boomer Sooner.

Quarterback Sam Bradford, just a sophomore, is a bona fide Heisman Trophy candidate. Bradford has completed 72.6 percent of his passes for 1,665 yards and 18 touchdowns compared to just three interceptions.

Manuel Johnson and Juaquin Iglesias have been outstanding go-to receivers for Bradford. Johnson has 468 receiving yards and five touchdowns, with 298 yards and four touchdowns coming in the last two games. Iglesias has 401 yards and five touchdowns this season. Tight end Jermaine Gresham is another outstanding target for Bradford.

Oklahoma-Texas is a battle of unbeatens

This year's game will have a lot of punch. Oklahoma started the season No. 4 in the Associated Press and has climbed to No. 1, while Texas has gone from No. 11 to No. 5.

Week Seven: The College Football "Playoffs" Continue

Let's be honest: If there was a real 16-team playoff, Texas vs. Oklahoma and Florida vs. LSU wouldn't mean jack this weekend.
Oh, we'd watch. The games would be good. They would count. But they wouldn't have a fraction of the juice.
Win or lose, all four teams would likely end up in the playoffs anyway. At the end of the year everyone will be moaning that the National Championship isn't being "settled on the field."
Wrong. It's being settled on the field right now—during the regular season through virtual elimination "playoff" games like those I'm previewing today.
Texas (5) vs. Oklahoma (1) This is the third time this year that two top eight teams have squared off in high drama. First, USC-Ohio State, then Georgia-Alabama, and now Texas-Oklahoma. This should be a great game. There's nothing like a showdown between traditional rivals when they're ranked in the top five together. Oklahoma has to be slightly favored to go all the way to the NC because of an easier schedule. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma Sooners
