Neither a cranky hamstring nor No. 25 Oklahoma was able to slow down Brandon Johnson and San Diego. Johnson scored 18 of his 22 points in the first half, then his Toreros teammates took over to beat the Sooners 76-64 Wednesday night in the first round of the Great Alaska Shootout.
Give Thanks, Sooners

Show me an Oklahoma Sooners fan who claims to have thought the squad would be where it is at this point in the 2009, and I'll show you a liar. In the midst of such a disappointing year, it seems like an easy question to ask: What could OU football possibly have to be thankful for?

The 2009 season hasn't been a complete wash, though. This Thanksgiving holiday, Sooner Nation should count these blessings.
Texas aims to avoid another loss to A&M (AP)

Texas has taken control of its annual series with Oklahoma, gone 15-3 against ranked opponents since 2005 and won its last five bowl games. Texas A&M;, though, has been a troublesome opponent for Mack Brown's Longhorns. The Aggies have twice upset the heavily favored Longhorns in the last three season.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma Sooners, Mack Brown

BCS Nightmare: Three Upsets That Will Devastate the System

Every year at this time the BCS hinges its hopes that the elite teams will distinguish themselves from the pack, creating clear, crisp champions and compelling match-ups.

While controversy and calamity do cause a stir and drive a lot of intrigue to the College Football and the Bowls themselves, the BCS does not need to draw further attention and scrutiny to their ridiculous system.

Thus far, it's already been a rough go for the BCS. Sure-fire teams that travel well and drive ratings such as USC, Notre Dame and Miami are likely out of the picture.

It's very possible only one Big 12 team will participate in a BCS Bowl while two non-BCS teams TCU and Boise State could both enter.

Not only would two non-AQ teams pose a ratings and possible ticket sales nightmare for the BCS, but the possibility that both could win could give congress the ammo it needs to take down the entire system.

Assuming that the BCS is entirely about money, power, greed and control (I know that's a stretch, that could never ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Bowl Championship Series, Oklahoma Sooners, Southern California Trojans, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Miami Hurricanes

Does One Star Make a Team? A Look at Sam Bradford and Others

First, lets explain that headline. Sam Bradford is a great quarterback. After all, they don't give Heisman Trophies to hacks, and with Bradford at the helm, Oklahoma does is as good as almost any team in college football.
But without him, they are a 6-5 team. And one that even Sooner fans would agree is a far cry from the one that was expected to contend for a national championship this year.
There are good teams that win despite the loss of a star or two, and then there are teams that are thought to be great, but are exposed as an average team without their star.
And while every team has it's stars, most teams can still win without them. However, there is a danger to relying to heavily on just one star, and it was apparent this year in Norman, Oklahoma.
When Florida lost Tim Tebow earlier this year, they could rely on a smothering defense, a solid ground game, and a backup quarterback to help them win games. They did the same last year when wideout Percy Harvin was out.
Alabama lost one ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Sam Bradford, Alabama Crimson Tide, Oklahoma Sooners

Role reversal: Hunters become hunted in Rivalry Week

It's Rivalry Week, and that can only mean one thing: You can throw out the clichés when these teams play.
Dave Wannstedt's Pittsburgh squad looks for third straight against West Virginia.

Or, if you're Pittsburgh coach Dave Wannstedt, you call it what it is.
"Show up," Wannstedt said. "You better be ready to play."
Surging Pitt has won the last two games in the Backyard Brawl with West Virginia, the first game of that streak a turning point for Wannstedt's reclamation of his alma mater. Since upsetting No. 2 West Virginia in 2007, the Panthers have won 19 of 24 games and can win their first ever outright Big East championship next week against Cincinnati.
In other words, now is not the time to trip up. For Pitt -- or any of the other three teams accustomed to being on the other end of Rivalry Week.

Pitt
The cliché: It's between the ears.
Pitt must play like the underdog. Too many times over the years, the Panthers have struggled in games ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Pittsburgh Panthers, Oklahoma State Cowboys, West Virginia Mountaineers, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Oklahoma Sooners

Conference Call: Oklahoma State on the rise in Big 12

Each week, Sporting News' Matt Hayes ranks the Division I-A conferences—and the teams within each league.
5. Big 12
1. Texas
2. Nebraska
3. Oklahoma State
4. Texas Tech
5. Oklahoma
6. Missouri
7. Kansas State
8. Texas A&M
9. Iowa State
10. Kansas
11. Baylor
12. Colorado
Rising
Oklahoma State: 'Pokes better hope QB Zac Robinson is ready to play this weekend in Bedlam, considering what's on the line: beating Oklahoma for first time since 2002 and earning a BCS bid.
Falling
Baylor: Bears have been lost on the field since the injury to star QB Robert Griffin. The change in quarterbacks hurt; the loss of leadership was even worse.

When Jeff Capel left Virginia Commonwealth to become the head coach at Oklahoma four years ago, his contract mandated that he bring his new team back to Richmond to play the Rams. Capel received a very warm welcome Saturday night, and then the Rams showed him that things are just fine without him. Jay Gavin scored 20 points, Larry Sanders 17 and Virginia Commonwealth never trailed in an 82-69 upset...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Oklahoma Sooners, Jeff Capel, Jay Gavin, Larry Sanders

Week 12 postgame, the teams: TCU continues dream season; Sooners sink further

Sporting News' Derek Samson covers the best and worst performances of Week 12 in college football.
Making history
  • No. 4 TCU routed Wyoming 45-10 to give the Frogs their first 11-0 record since 1938.
• Texas Tech recorded its most lopsided win ever over Oklahoma. Behind 388 passing yards from Taylor Potts, the Red Raiders handed the Sooners a 41-13 defeat.
• Temple, thanks to 156 rushing yards from Matt Brown, won a school-record ninth straight game.
Heading up
Northwestern. The victory over No. 17 Wisconsin was the Wildcats' third straight and their fourth in the last five games. QB Mike Kafka has thrown for more than 300 yards in his last two games, which for a Big Ten QB is equivalent to throwing for about 800 in a game.
Heading down
Oklahoma. The issues in Norman go beyond Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford being sidelined this season. Bradford didn't play defense, did he? A team stacked with NFL talent may very well finish 6-6. Wow.
Numbers of the day ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oklahoma Sooners

Oklahoma Sooners Take Huge Step Back Against Texas Tech Red Raiders

In their 2008 matchup with the Texas Tech Red Raiders, the Oklahoma Sooners scored their first touchdown six minutes into the game. It marked the first of nine scores in a 65-21 victory .
In Saturday's 41-13 Tech win , OU picked up its only touchdown of the game in the 53rd minute.
With one game remaining in a frustrating season, the embarrassing beatdown suffered in Lubbock showed that OU's offensive about-face from last year is all but complete. Think of it as about a 165-degree turnaround—heading the wrong way, of course.
A drop-off in production from last season's prodigious totals wouldn't have been shocking, especially given all the offensive talent standing on the Sooners' sideline. Still, who could have foreseen such a dramatic collapse?
The vaunted Sooner defense certainly deserves its fair share of the blame for Saturday's boondoggle. However, the putrid performance on the other side of the ball had a large hand in the D's tough day. Time and again, OU's failure to generate ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oklahoma Sooners, Texas Tech Red Raiders, Texas Longhorns

The last time TCU played at Wyoming, the Horned Frogs lost. The last time they were 10-0, they lost. Be assured that coach Gary Patterson has reminded his team of that 2007 trip to Laramie, Wyo., where the fourth-ranked Horned Frogs play on Saturday. And the 2003 season when they won their first 10 games before losing at Southern Miss and even 2005, when after winning at Oklahoma to start the season...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, TCU Horned Frogs, Gary Patterson, Oklahoma Sooners

Turnover Battle Crucial for Oklahoma Sooners, Texas Tech Red Raiders

  Date : Nov. 21 Time : 12:30 p.m. EST Venue : Jones AT&T Stadium (Lubbock, Texas) Vegas Line : OU -6.5
Road trips to Texas Tech have been a nightmare for the Oklahoma Sooners since 2005, when some questionable officiating snatched a win out of OU's hands .
The next visit to Jones AT&T Stadium in 2007 saw the Red Raiders knock Sam Bradford out of the game in the first quarter, as OU's talented quarterback sustained a concussion while trying make a tackle following a fumble.
Little-used second stringer Joey Halzle gave a game effort in trying to rally the Sooners late, but it just wasn't enough.
The Sooners appear to have a good shot at turning their Lubbock luck around this season, though, as Tech is struggling down the stretch to get consistent play from their quarterbacks.
And we all know that if coach Mike Leach's air raid attack isn't popping, the Red Raiders are an average team at best.
For OU to reverse the curse, pay attention to:

Oklahoma's Stoops continues to shoot down Notre Dame talk

                    Sporting News staff reports

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops on Wednesday again tried to dismiss rumors that he is a candidate to take over at Notre Dame if the school fires coach Charlie Weis after the season.

Asked by Sporting News Radio's Tim Montemayor if there is "any truth (to the rumors), anything going on with you and Notre Dame?", Stoops replied: "Notre Dame has a coach, so there's nothing to talk about," reiterating what he told reporters Tuesday at his weekly news conference.

Stoops also told Montemayor that he considers any talk linking him to other school just "noise."

"I'm very fortunate to work with great people here and a great situation at a great university," he said.

Willie Warren scored 24 points, Tony Crocker added 13 and No. 17 Oklahoma notched the 1,500th win in the program's history by beating Louisiana-Monroe 72-61 on Tuesday night. After dishing out a career-high 11 assists in the Sooners' opener, Warren played his expected role as the team's leading scorer against the Warhawks (1-2).

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Oklahoma Sooners, Willie Warren, Tony Crocker, Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks

Eight new things in college football that you can take to the bank

USC won't make the BCS. SMU is good, and Temple is better. The national title game should include two unbeaten teams.
A lackluster Big East record shows that Jim Leavitt's teams aren't built to last a full season.
All sorts of alleged guarantees in college football have failed to come through in 2009. But a few new rules have developed. Here's a peek at a handful:
Rule 1: USF tanks down the stretch
Again, the Bulls took an undefeated into October and looked like a Big East title contender. Again, they've tumbled in conference play, capped by a 31-0 tail-kicking against Rutgers on Thursday. Coach Jim Leavitt's program is 16-17 in conference play since joining the league and only once has finished as close as a game out of first place.
Rule 2: Rich Rodriguez vs. the fans
He almost took the Alabama job. Then he did bail, to Michigan, sparking lawsuits and nasty he said-he said. Then he coached UM to its worst season in decades. Now, he's sitting on a six-game Big Ten losing ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, South Florida Bulls, Michigan Wolverines, Oklahoma Sooners, Oregon State Beavers, North Carolina Tar Heels, Wisconsin Badgers

The Oklahoma Sooners have joined 10 other elite college football programs to unveil Nike's new Pro Combat uniforms this month.
"Players need their uniforms to be as light as possible so they can play the game at top speed," said Kris Aman, Nike's Global Vice President and General Manager for Nike Athletic Training. "The Nike Pro Combat uniform is a modern system of dress that is dramatically lighter while providing durability and protection."
Pictures and captions in the linked slide-show give a unique peek into the Nike design and the particular devotion to Oklahoma's championship heritage.

Bob Stoops to Notre Dame Not Far-Fetched

Listening to some loudmouths in the Sooner State, you'd wonder why any institution that's serious about its football would be interested in stealing Bob Stoops out of Oklahoma.
And yet, with Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis' ample seat growing warmer by the snap in South Bend, the Chicago Sun-Times put the word out today that Stoops is supposedly interested in talking to the Irish brass if the job opens up.
Apparently no one in the ND brain trust bothered to check the message boards and consult with "OURULZ" and "SoonerStud."
The "Stoops-must-go" crowd of George Steinbrenner wannabes contend that OU's four-loss 2009 season just proves what they claim to have known for years: Stoops has lost "It." To them, it would be a blessing in disguise if OU's head coach decided to light out for South Bend.
They probably thought New Coke was a great idea, too.
On the heels of an ugly loss at Nebraska, Stoops' normally steely demeanor cracked last week when addressing criticisms about how he has handled ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Bob Stoops, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Oklahoma Sooners

Off-The-Field Message Blows Away On-The-Field Message in OU 65-10 Win

There was so much going on in Oklahoma's 65-10 demolition of Texas A&M that it's impossible to dismiss the victory outright or bestow praise upon it.
In either case, the bone of the game will crack if the weight of too much interpretation gets applied to it.
The game could get the victor labelled as having returned to the glory days of yesteryear. Not. Or as a trendy fraud in Sooners' clothing. Not that either. Keep reading for what this game did reveal.
It was a game, not particularly impressive, which extended Oklahoma's nation-best home win streak to 29 games and made the Sooners bowl eligible.
Like most sociopaths, Texas A&M is boring. Boring on defense, boring on offense, boring even on kickoff returns, where they fumbled more often than teenagers in the back seat of a car.
Yes, the Sooners gave some impressions to speak of.
Landry Jones is still a stud. Five interceptions last week? No big deal. Five TDs against the Aggies and a career best 392 passing ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oklahoma Sooners

3-Pointers: OU's Warren shows unselfish side

Sporting News' Mike DeCourcy analyzes what Saturday's buzz means to college basketball.
Slick Willie
Oklahoma guard Willie Warren has long since established that those who labeled him as a selfish player while in high school had gotten it all wrong. But just in case there were any lingering doubts, he posted this stat line in the opening game of what should be an All-America season for him: 15 points, 11 assists.
Yes, during the summer, Warren apparently went all Bobby Hurley on us.
So that pretty much settles the issue for good, doesn't it? Warren is as much a winner as any great college player. He deferred last season to superstar Blake Griffin, as he should have, and Saturday he deferred to freshman guard Steven Pledger because Pledger — 8-of-9 from the field, 4-of-5 on 3-pointers — could barely miss a shot.
This development was fascinating because having distanced himself from that old rep, Warren did face the danger that it could be revived as he became, by necessity, the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Oklahoma Sooners, Washington Huskies, Willie Warren

Sooners Nabbed As One of 11 Elite Teams to Wear New Nike Uniform

Nike announced Thursday that Oklahoma is one of 11 elite programs that will wear Nike's new Pro Combat uniform during the month of November.
Oklahoma "will take the field wearing the Nike Pro Combat uniform, a new system of dress and the lightest football uniform Nike has ever created," Nike's press release stated.
The Sooners will unveil the new uniform on the road against Texas Tech (Nov. 21) or at home against Oklahoma State (Nov. 28).
"Nike designed the Nike Pro Combat uniform to address the evolution of the game: Today's players are stronger and faster and the collisions are more violent and explosive than ever before," Nike's press release stated.
"Nike also worked closely with coaches and administrators at each university and took great care to bring inspiration to the Nike Pro Combat uniforms that each team will wear. Nike designers gave a nod to teams' past national championships, drew upon the heritage of the universities' traditions, and combined these cues into the design ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Nike, Oklahoma Sooners, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Florida State Seminoles, Ohio State Buckeyes
