What Tebow Must Do to Beat LSU

The SEC has always been the conference that, above all others, doesn't allow for mistakes. After losing to Ole Miss two weeks ago, in what many consider his worst college game, no one knows this better than Tim Tebow.
Tebow's poor play, along with some poor play from every other Gator not named Harvin or James put Florida in a position where its next loss will undoubtedly squash any chance it has of fulfilling its 2009 national championship dream that looked rather reasonable when Tebow stepped to the podium to accept his Heisman Trophy last December.
This week, Tebow will venture to make up for that loss at Ole Miss and put the Gators back on track for a chance at the crystal football.
All he has to do is make it through the defending national champion, undefeated LSU Tigers. No biggie.
Last season when Tebow took on Les Miles' bunch, he had a relatively mediocre game by 2007 Tim Tebow standards. Tebow completed less than 50 percent of his passes in the game, throwing for under 200 yards ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Tim Tebow, Florida Gators, LSU Fightin' Tigers, Ole Miss Rebels

SEC Power Poll: Week Six

With a couple of top teams idle and only one big game this past weekend (featuring Vanderbilt!), our Power Poll is fairly uneventful this week. But don’t take our word for it... check out the overall results to see what our fellow SEC bloggers think.
  1. (1) Alabama (defeated Kentucky, 17-14) 2. (2) LSU (idle) 3. (3) Georgia (idle) 4. (4) Florida (defeated Arkansas, 38-7)
Yawn.
  5. (6) Vanderbilt (defeated Auburn, 14-13) 6. (5) Auburn (lost to Vanderbilt, 13-14)
Ancient scholars are currently poring over arcane texts to see if Vandy being undefeated and No. 1 in the conference at this point in the season equals some sign of the apocalypse. (Given the way the rest of the world is going, we’re inclined to say that it is.)
Meanwhile, some words of comfort for Auburn fans: We know you’re getting tired of struggling to score in the high single digits, but don’t worry...you’re due for a 40-point offensive explosion against the Hogs this ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Arkansas Razorbacks, South Carolina Gamecocks, Ole Miss Rebels

South Carolina-Kentucky Football Should Make for a Defensive Battle

Before we get ahead of ourselves and claim that the Gamecocks are all of a sudden a potent, lethal SEC offense because they posted 31 points and 405 yards (including 327 in the air) in a win at Ole Miss, let’s not forget that the Rebels are 11th in scoring defense, 11th in total defense, and 12th in pass defense. So while Chris Smelley had a great game, it was against a terrible defense. That said, there is room for optimism because of the receiver play from the Gamecocks. Nine different receivers caught a ball, Kenny McKinley returned from injury, and Jared Cook rumbled 64 yards with a catch—providing a rare, home-run play from the Gamecocks. Kentucky’s strength, as the nation saw last weekend, is clearly its defense, much like South Carolina. The two teams are ranked first and second in the conference in pass defense and are almost identical in rush defense, as well. Translation: This should be a big-hitting, defensive battle. The difference in the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, South Carolina Gamecocks, Kentucky Wildcats, Ole Miss Rebels

College Coaches Will Lie to Athletic Recruits

While it happened a few weeks back, there was an interesting article about the recruiting of Jevan Snead.
For those that are aware of him, this talented prep quarterback ended up committing to the University of Florida during the recruiting process. In the end, Snead decided to change his mind and commit to the University of Texas.
The main reason why he changed his mind was Tim Tebow.
First off, I assume it would be hard to realize that Tebow was going to be a Heisman winner as a sophomore. But what is funny is what Florida head coach Urban Meyer told Snead during the recruiting process.
I really wonder if he meant to say this or if it was just a pitch, but Meyer ended up telling Snead that they were recruiting Tebow as a linebacker.
An eventual Heisman winner at linebacker? Are you kidding me?
Snead ended up getting the ultimate revenge by going into Gainesville and coming out with a win as part of Ole Miss (he transferred from Texas after it was clear he ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Tim Tebow, Florida Gators, Urban Meyer, Ole Miss Rebels

South Carolina, Vanderbilt Top SEC Week Six Grades

  South Carolina: A
This is how Gamecock fans have been waiting to see a Spurrier-coached SC team play. Out of nowhere, QB Chris Smelley throws for 330-plus yards, and the reliable defense held the Rebels to just three points in the second half and took advantage of the three OM miscues. Easily their best effort of the season.
    Vanderbilt: A-
Another one of those head-scratchers that Vanderbilt has mastered this year. They actually outgained an SEC opponent for the first time this year, though against this year’s Auburn team, that’s not saying much.
    Arkansas: B+
The Hogs were actually competitive for three quarters, which is more than they can say about their recent games. This is certainly Petrino’s first moral victory to go along with his two moral defeats he opened the season with. I’m not sure how much better the Hogs could have played in this one.
    Kentucky: B+
Went toe-to-toe with the No. 2 Tide in a ridiculously lopsided rivalry and nearly ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, South Carolina Gamecocks, Ole Miss Rebels

Alabama-Ole Miss: Preview from a Tide Perspective

Tide fans weren’t worried about a letdown against Kentucky, just the “cycle” of John Parker Wilson. He was due for a down game.

Most figured the team was good enough to win without an "A" game from Wilson. Little did they know that most of the offense would follow suit.

This is the game cycle where JPW is supposed to be hot, and this time observant fans believe they will need it. Ole Miss plays strong against the run and are little softer on the pass defense. JPW needs to come through.

Ole Miss is one of those teams you better not let “hang around,” as evidenced by their late rally against Florida and subsequent defeat of them.

Playing Kentucky, the Tide was still not “on guard” against a letdown after such a big game as Georgia was. You'd better believe this is a team that better not be trifled with or you won’t leave with an ugly win. And that’s what worries the fans. A three-loss Ole Miss may not get ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ole Miss Rebels, Alabama Crimson Tide, Nick Saban, Houston Nutt

Florida Still Has Plenty of Questions After Win Over Arkansas

Jeff Demps had 2 rushing touchdowns as the Gators ran past Arkansas.

Article courtesy of SEC Sports Hub .
The Gators bounced back from their stunning loss to Ole Miss last week, and they did it in much the same fashion that lost them the game last weekend.
Quarterback Tim Tebow had several short yardage conversions for first downs, including a 4th-and-1 play that he was unable to pick up last week.
However, despite the lopsided score line, this game was not a great one for the Gators.
Tebow and company came out looking very lethargic once again, as Tebow and Harvin tried to shoulder the load early for the Gators.
It looked as if the Gators’ first scoring drive was going to stall inside the five-yard line...

My Perfect Picks in Week Six

Honestly, I do not like to blow my own horn, but picking against the spread is a gift I have. This week, the three teams I suggested to bet on covered. Also, if you read my article from Tuesday, I didn’t recommend that you bet on the Stanford vs Notre Dame game but if for some reason you wanted to I suggested you take Stanford at +8.
The final score was in Notre Dame’s favor, 28-21. Stanford barely covered, but they did, and that is what’s important. Ole Miss was favored against South Carolina at home. South Carolina went into Ole Miss as a +2.5 underdog but Ole Miss won a big games last week which was too much for a rebuilding program.
The Ole ball coach needed this win and he got it, so not only did South Carolina cover, they won the game. If I was an odds maker, this game would have been a pick’em from the beginning. Finally, I thought Oregon St at +8 was almost a give away. Oregon St proved to be better than the nation assumed after beating USC. Oregon St ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oregon State Beavers, Ole Miss Rebels, South Carolina Gamecocks, Southern California Trojans

Chris Smelley’s Career Day Leads Gamecocks over Rebels

For the second week in a row, Chris Smelley held off Stephen Garcia in the fight for the starting quarterback job. After his performance Saturday night, he might just keep the job for a little longer. Despite promises from Steve Spurrier to play Garcia this week, the fan-favorite stayed on the sideline the entire game, watching Smelley carve up a porous Ole Miss defense. En route to 327 yards in the air, Smelley connected with nine different receivers, completing 22 of 32 passes and three touchdowns. In addition to some young receivers stepping up, specifically freshman Jason Barnes (seven catches, 76 yards, and two touchdowns), the Gamecocks also got a lift from the return of senior receiver Kenny McKinley, who caught four key balls after missing four games due to injury. The Gamecocks also benefited from some hard running by Mike Davis, who registered 73 yards on 19 carries. On the other side of the ball, however, the Gamecock defense might have stolen ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, South Carolina Gamecocks, Ole Miss Rebels, Steve Spurrier

Chris Smelley threw three touchdown passes, South Carolina's No. 1 defense held Mississippi to a field goal in the second half and the Gamecocks beat the Rebels 31-24 on Saturday. Given the starting job over backup Stephen Garcia on Thursday, Smelley completed 22 of 31 passes for a career-high 327 yards and led an 11-play, 95-yard drive midway through the fourth quarter to put away Ole Miss, which...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, South Carolina Gamecocks, Ole Miss Rebels, Stephen Garcia

Gambling on the Games: NCAA Football Week Five

A small loss last week, as Syracuse broke its dry spell against the spread. Still, Syracuse choked, letting Dave "Wannie" Wannstedt steal the win in their home Dome.

Last Week : Plus nine units to start
Pitt almost got an extra garbage score to steal the cover. Pitt -1 unit
  Northwestern won outright. +1 unit
Virginia is really bad. Dominated by Duke, Cavs -1 unit.
Purdue didn't have much. -1 unit
VA Tech beats the Huskers outright. Hokies over Huskers. + 1 unit
Alabama devastated teh Dwgs. Roll Tide + 1 unit
Colorado State fell to the ax. - 1 unit

Minus 1 Unit for the week. Plus eight for the year .
A Hokies, Tide, and Wildcats money-line parlay would have been beautiful. I coulda been a contender...

This week:
Ohio State - 1 at Wisconsin
The Badgers looked bad, turning the ball over four times and losing to Michigan last week. Look for them to bounce back at home against a still shaky Ohio State squad with a true frosh QB.

Vanderbilt's Perfect Start: What's Under The Hood?

I love to look at the surprise teams of a new college football season, to project if they’ll continue providing pleasure to their oft-starved and surprised fans. If a school like Vanderbilt starts strong (4-0, #21 in the nation), you’re going to take notice, especially when it includes two hard-fought SEC wins. The most recent victim, Mississippi, followed the ‘Dores defeat by upending Florida in The Swamp. The question is: Can a program without a winning season since 1982 continue stunning the conference and country? You can often tell plenty about a team’s strength by reviewing the statistics; they leave footprints for those willing to look beyond the score. Head coach Bobby Johnson’s done some wonderful things with a program vastly outrecruited by most, if not all, of its peers. He has them doing the little things that add up to wins in close games. Still, when you see Vanderbilt ranked #112 in total offense (out of 119 teams) and a less-than-stout #73 in ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Bobby Johnson, Ole Miss Rebels

For Florida Gators To Win-Out Percy Harvin (Not Tim Tebow) Must Step Up

Who is Percy Harvin? Does anyone know? We know Tim Tebow's every step in life.
I am beginning to know Tim Tebow's face better than my own. I could probably write a pretty lengthy biography about Tebow because the media is so saturated with Tebow hype. Heck, I know more about Tebow's brothers and sisters than I do about anyone else on the Gators team.
But what about Percy Harvin?
Why doesn't he get the love that Tim Tebow gets? Look at Harvin's numbers in the last game.
Harvin had 268 total yards of offense and 2 touchdowns, both rushing and receiving the ball.
In the Capital One Bowl against the Michigan Wolverines, Percy Harvin had 242 yards of total offense and 2 touchdowns again.
Yet again, like the Ole MIss game, I barely remember Harvin even being in the game.
At halftime of the Ole Miss game, Mississippi Head Coach Houston Nutt said, "Oh yeah, we're getting some great pressure, our frontline's playing really ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Tim Tebow, Florida Gators, Ole Miss Rebels

Article courtesy of SEC Sports Hub .
Nashville, Tennessee is buzzing this week, as the highly anticipated matchup between the undefeated Vanderbilt Commodores and Auburn Tigers approaches. Vanderbilt has been a huge surprise in the SEC so far, posting a perfect 4-0 record with a 2-0 mark in the SEC. The Commodores were expected to have a down year after losing all five starting offensive linemen from 2007. Instead, Vanderbilt has shocked a few teams, including Steve Spurrier’s South Carolina Gamecocks and Houston Nutt’s Ole Miss Rebels. The Commodores will look to record their biggest upset of the year this Saturday, when they play host to the No. 13-ranked Auburn Tigers in what promises to be an electric atmosphere. Still, not many people actually expect Vanderbilt to win, and that could be a big mistake...

Florida Gators Swimming out of the Swamp?

The Gators came into the 2008 season with high hopes in search of making a run at the title one more time. With reigning Heisman Trophy-winner Tim Tebow leading the offense again and having a defense that is rock solid, that hope of the top spot in the league didn't seem to be too complicated.
Oops!
The Gators suffered their first defeat and most shocking upset of the season last weekend. Thus, the Gators did not only lose to an unexpected Ole Miss, they lost on their home turf, the famous Ben-Hill Griffin Stadium, their beloved Swamp.
Hearts were crushed as the Gators were beat and the stadium went silent with the exception of the screaming Miss fans and very excited Ole Miss Rebels themselves. On the walk across the field, Houston Nutt went to shake the hand of coach Urban Meyer, yet the Gators coach pulled away? Not a good sign or good character on his part.
The Gators set out in hopes of finishing the season on a good note, but with a schedule such as theirs with teams like ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators, Ole Miss Rebels, Tim Tebow

Week Six SEC Beatdowns and Breakdowns

There are eight SEC teams in conference play this week. Let's break down the possible beatdowns that will be taking place this Saturday.
  ** Winner in bold

   1. Florida (1-1 SEC, 3-1 overall) @ Arkansas (0-1 SEC, 2-2 overall)
Lets start with the game that should be the most lopsided. After the shocking upset on a national stage at home, Florida is coming into this game with a huge chip on their shoulders. Arkansas is coming off two straight whippings at the hands of Alabama and Texas. The Hogs are both physically and mentally worn down.
Look for Florida to take out their frustration in this one.
  Florida 42 , Arkansas 13

   2. Kentucky (0-0 SEC, 4-0 overall) @ Alabama (2-0 SEC, 5-0 overall)
Both Kentucky and Alabama come into this game undefeated. However, Alabama has faced tougher opponents than Kentucky, making their perfect record worth more than Kentucky's to most people.
Alabama, ranked second in the nation, has a target on their backs, and the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Alabama Crimson Tide, Kentucky Wildcats, Ole Miss Rebels, Auburn Tigers, Florida Gators

College Football's Add a Caption

It's Wednesday, also known as Hump Day. Why it's called that? Who knows? But it's mid-week and time for some fun before I post the Pick'em picks for tomorrow. (Mitch is the guest.)
Take a look at the picture above (thanks to Getty Images) and write a caption for it. Something that really captures the whole feeling of the picture. It shouldn't be too hard!
This picture was taken last week in the Florida-Ole Miss game (open the hyperlink to see a giant close-up of Tebow's face...it's hilarious!)
Timmy "Superman" Tebow went for it on 4th down, and oops, he didn't make it. His eyes have a very pained look, don't they?
Be creative, be fun. I'll post the winning (funniest) caption tomorrow. Let's see who can come up with the funniest...I have a feeling the comments are going to be hilarious.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ole Miss Rebels, Tim Tebow

Mississippi and South Carolina Cross Paths to Redemption

Oxford, Miss.: Steve Spurrier and his Gamecocks visit the Ole Miss Rebels and their new head coach, Houston Nutt.
The Gamecocks are reeling from back-to-back conference losses to Vanderbilt and Georgia. After a two-week hiatus from conference play, the Gamecocks will face an up-and-coming Mississippi team who stunned the nation with a 31-30 upset over the Florida Gators last week.
That looked similar to Houston Nutt's 50-48 win over LSU last year while coaching at Arkansas. Coming into this game, both Ole Miss and South Carolina are 3-2.
Both are taking the first steps down the long road to redemption, and out of the proverbial cellars of there respective divisions; and where better to begin than the hallowed grounds of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium?
South Carolina lost in Week Two to a Vanderbilt team that is significantly better than most expected. The following week, the Gamecocks lost to Georgia when South Carolina quarterback Chris Smelley's pass was picked off in the end zone by Georgia's ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, South Carolina Gamecocks, Ole Miss Rebels, Houston Nutt, Steve Spurrier

Doe out with double hernia injury

Florida linebacker Dustin Doe will have surgery Wednesday to repair a double hernia and miss at least two games.

Doe, a two-year starter who has 13 tackles this season, was hurt Sept. 6 against Miami. He played sparingly two weeks later at Tennessee, and the injury flared up again Saturday against Mississippi.

Coach Urban Meyer said he hopes to get Doe back before Florida's Oct. 25 game against Kentucky.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators, Tennessee Volunteers, Ole Miss Rebels, Urban Meyer, Kentucky Wildcats

Florida-Arkansas: Five Ways for the Gators to Beat the Razorbacks

When the Gators Are on Offense

  Let It Rip
Please, please, please take the shackles off Tim Tebow and the rest of the offense. Much like the USC Trojans of a few years ago, the Gators are equipped with a great QB and a dynamic multi-purpose threat. They also have a decent supporting cast of playmakers, much like those same Trojans.
The only difference is that Florida shows only flashes of brilliance with their offense, and it's time for a change. This is the game to unleash the Ferrari of an offense that has looked like a Kia at times this season.

  Fulfill the Role
The Gator offense was looked at to carry the team this season while the defense got its feet underneath them. The exact opposite has been true, as the defense has carried the team so far, while the offense has struggled to find a rhythm.
This needs to be the week that the offensive ship rights itself. They put up 30 points and over 400 yards last week, which is a step in the right direction.

The State of the Florida Gators: Blame and Hope

Well, Florida fans, kiss the undefeated season—and the Heisman Trophy—goodbye.
The dreams of spending a New Year's vacation in Miami for a week or two became a faint mirage of what Florida fans assumed would happen given the three relatively easy wins to start the season.
Given the Trojans' loss Thursday night in Corvallis, and coupled with a then-possible Alabama upset over Georgia, Florida had a legitimate claim to the No. 1 spot in both polls.
That thought lasted until kickoff. Ole Miss was not fazed at all by the crowd, the noise, the No. 4 Gators—nothing. Ole Miss came into Gainesville and handed the Gators the type of loss not seen since Ron Zook was the coach. Florida came in with a post-Rocky Top hangover and left in another teary-eyed press conference type of way.
For Gator fans, it's not really that big of a surprise. Every season the Gators seem to lose a very winnable game in a fashion that can only make people ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators, Ole Miss Rebels

South Carolina-Ole Miss: Stephen Garcia in, Kenny McKinley Out

As South Carolina reenters SEC play, the Gamecocks essentially begin a new chapter in their season. The Head Ball Coach, Steve Spurrier, has strongly implied that redshirt freshman quarterback Stephen Garcia will in fact get the start against Ole Miss. Based on Garcia’s performance against UAB, Spurrier said, “I think we’ve got to give Stephen Garcia every opportunity to play. I think his ability to run out of the pocket adds an extra dimension to our offense.” Never one to give out too much praise at once, Spurrier quickly added, “We’ll see if we can’t try to teach him a little bit where to throw the ball.” Meanwhile, senior receiver Kenny McKinley will miss yet another game with a hamstring injury. Once thought to be held out for preventative purposes, it now appears McKinley might actually miss the entire season. In fact, Coach Spurrier is considering asking McKinley to take a medical redshirt, much the way Jasper ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, South Carolina Gamecocks, Ole Miss Rebels, Stephen Garcia
