After going 2-0 in their first two games, the Hoosiers fell back to earth this weekend at the O'Reilly Auto Parts Tip Off, and reminded everyone that this year will not be as easy as everyone would hope. The Hoosiers played a tough game vs. Ole Miss, and while they were winning during the first half, the superior athleticism and experience of Ole Miss took over, and the Hoosiers lost 89-71. In that game, Indiana shot just 20 percent from behind the arc, going 3-of-15, and shot only 44.4 percent from the free throw line, going 12-of-27. The next day, the Hoosiers came right back onto the court to take on the Boston University Terriers. This game seemed to go back and forth, but by the end of the second half, the Hoosiers were up by six points with three minutes left. However, the Hoosiers were not able to keep the lead, and lost to the Terriers 71-67. The Hoosiers lack of a real big man hurt them in this game, as they were out rebounded 52-32. Mississippi, California and North Carolina have surged back into the AP Top 25 college football poll. There was little change, however, at the top of The Associated Press rankings after a weekend when most of the highly ranked teams had easy victories or time off. No. 1 Florida is followed by fellow unbeatens Alabama, Texas, TCU, Cincinnati and Boise State. Also holding their places were No. 7 Georgia Tech, No. 8 Pittsburgh and No. 9 Ohio State. The only change in the top 10 came at No. 10.

SEC Bowl Projections

With one week remaining in an up-and-down season, the SEC bowl picture is still as muddy as ever. Even after all the games are completed we still won't know anything for sure until the Sunday following the SEC Championship game. That is not commonplace in the SEC. Usually there are two elite teams, three to four fringe teams, two to three decent teams, and one lucky-to-be-.500 team in the SEC by this time in the season. This year the elite teams are there (Alabama and Florida). There are two fringe teams (Ole Miss and LSU). The SEC has a whole slew of decent teams (Kentucky, Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia, Arkansas). The one lucky team still holds true (South Carolina). The liklihood of having four teams finish 7-5 in the SEC is mindboggling to say the least. Throw in the fact that three teams could finish 6-6 as well, and well, you see why the SEC is not quite what she's cracked up to be outside the top teams. Commodores Don't Have Much Of a Shot Against Rival Volunteers

There's some old saying about how no matter terrible your season has been, it all goes away if you beat your archrival. I don't really buy that. Not in Vanderbilt's case, in any event. If you told me before the season that we'd beat Tennessee but would have to wind up 3-9 in doing so, I would have said 'no thanks.' As it is, however, that's the best the Commodores can hope to do. And what a sweet victory it would be. Hard to feel particularly optimistic about this one, though. In fact, since losing to Army, it's been hard to feel particularly optimistic about anything involving Vanderbilt football. They've lost seven straight games. A year after they scored less than 14 points one time in an SEC contest (and that was in a 20-10 loss to UT), the whopping 13 they put up in last week's loss at Kentucky was their best of the conference slate.
