Royster helps short-handed Penn St. roll (AP)

No. 19 Penn State shoved aside the distractions and Oregon State. Evan Royster rushed for 141 yards and three touchdowns, Daryll Clark threw two TD passes and the Nittany Lions defense didn't miss a beat without two suspended starters in a 45-14 win Saturday over the Beavers. What was supposed to be Penn State's toughest nonconference game of the year turned into a laugher early.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Penn State Nittany Lions, Oregon State Beavers

Cardinal May Not Be Sleeper Pick Much Longer

Stanford has about as good a shot at being a surprise this year as any other team not currently on the national radar. They opened the season with an eight-point win against Oregon State, a game in which they were the underdog.

Although their schedule is not easy, they only have four games against ranked opponents left on the schedule, but after last year’s win over USC—called the “biggest upset ever” in Palo Alto—there’s no telling who they could upset next.

They probably have the best chance of any unranked team to upset a ranked opponent when they take on conference opponent Arizona State this weekend.

After their game against the Sun Devils, the Cardinal play five unranked opponents before they take on the current No. 23 ranked team in the country, UCLA.

They could realistically win four of those five games, with their most likely trip-up being on September 27 when they face former Cardinal head coach, Ty ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oregon State Beavers, Jim Harbaugh

More trouble for Paterno at Penn State

Penn State coach Joe Paterno has suspended defensive end Maurice Evans, a former Christ the King star who is a preseason All-American candidate, Abe Koroma and Andrew Quarless for the home opener against Oregon State tomorrow after State College police found marijuana in their apartment earlier in the week.

Evans and Koroma were both starters on the defensive line. Quarless, a backup tight end, was previously suspended for spring practice following a DUI on March 2. He was cited for failing to stop at a red light and buying alcohol for a minor and was sentenced to a 15-month rehab program.

This is not exactly what Paterno needed to hear in the wake of that ESPN Outside the Lines piece last month that was critical of the growing number of players in trouble on campus.

Should be interesting to see how Paterno handles this, having dismissed three players - Phil Taylor, Chris Baker and Willie Harriott - from the team this summer for off-field incidents.

• In thinking about the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Penn State Nittany Lions, Oregon State Beavers

Penn State Football: Week One Review and Week Two Preview

   Week One Review

There isn’t much to be said after a 66-10 victory over an overmatched opponent. In my article a few months ago, I predicted that Penn State would defeat Coastal Carolina by a score of 48-6. It looks like I had the right idea, but the offense was a little better than expected and the defense was slightly worse.

The lone touchdown for Coastal Carolina came off of a severely blown coverage in the secondary.

Based on the most recent seasons and the ineptness of the Coastal Carolina offense, I was much more interested in how the offense performed for this game than how the defense fared.

I expected Daryll Clark to have the starting QB job, which he did. However, Pat Devlin still received significant playing time in the first half. Clark looked great in all of his passing opportunities and wasn’t given the opportunity to show his running ability. Pat Devlin did make a very good pass in his ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Penn State Nittany Lions, Oregon State Beavers

College Football Week Two Predictions: Spread and Straight Up

In Week One, I went 8-3. Not too bad. This week I'll expand my picks and now pick against the spread and straight up.

   Thursday
  South Carolina at Vanderbilt (+9.5)
The Gamecocks came out flat last week before breaking through in the fourth quarter to roll N.C. State 34-0. Steve Spurrier has already made his first QB change of the season, going to Chris Smelley. The Commodores got a nice win last week against Miami OH. Nickson had 166 yards rushing, and he definitely wants to get that vs. South Carolina.
Winner: (Spread) South Carolina ; (Straight Up) South Carolina

   Friday
  Navy at Ball State (-6.5)
Navy racked up crazy rushing yards last week, including one back going over 300 yards alone. I'm picking the upset here.
Winner: (Spread) Navy ; (Straight Up) Navy

   Saturday
Georgia Tech at Boston College (-7)
Paul Johnson takes his triple option up to Boston after a solid win vs. a Ryan ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Wake Forest Demon Deacons, Oregon State Beavers, Penn State Nittany Lions

Oregon State Beavers Travels to Happy Valley To Face Penn St. Nittany Lions

Week two pits the Big Ten's No. 19 ranked Penn State (1-0) against Pac-10 Oregon State (0-1).
While Penn State rolled over Coastal Carolina in week one winning 66-10, Oregon State struggled against Stanford and fumbled away their comeback hopes in the final seconds, falling 36-28.
Penn State has dominated Pac-10 opponents winning 22 of the 33 games contested. They've faced every other Pac-10 team throughout their storied history, but this will mark the first match up between the Beavers and Nittany Lions.
Coach Joe Paterno matched Bobby Bowden last week for the most collegiate wins at 373 and would need a win in week two to stay even. Bowden's Florida State Seminoles play Western Carolina and most likely will walk out of Doak Campbell Stadium with their first victory of the season.
Paterno boasts a remarkable 373-125-3 (.747) record in his 43-year career at the helm, while coach Mike Riley has slowly built a respectable 47-39 (.546) record from the ground up in his eighth year as ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Penn State Nittany Lions, Oregon State Beavers, Joe Paterno, Mike Riley

Miami Mitch's Week Two College Football Picks: Part Two

Some people must think I’m just dead money.
I have been invited into every football pool, college football pool, fantasy football league, MLM business (aka “Ponzi scheme”), and just about anything else known to man in just the past month. While I know my videos aren’t Hollywood ( yes, I still love college football ) and The New York Times isn’t knocking on my door, this stuff doesn’t leave me much time during the season for any of those things.
Sure I’ll make a trip or two to Vegas, and I’ve already tried calling in a favor on the Manny-Oscar fight on Dec. 6, but generally this stuff just takes up time and, to be 100 percent honest, I just really enjoy it.
I gave a look at five games yesterday, and let’s get back to it with 10 more today.

Oregon State +16 1/2 at Penn State (Saturday 9/6/08, 3:30 EST) 1 Unit
I had this whole shtick written up about how the Beavers were playing in Beaver Stadium and it was a road game but then ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oregon State Beavers, Penn State Nittany Lions

Five Most Intriguing College Football Games of Week Two

The College Football season started out the just the way we expected it: A few upsets, some blow-outs, and USC coming out at No. 1 in the AP poll again.
Now we move on to Week Two, and surprisingly this week is going to be even easier for most teams. From the looks of it, there aren't many great match-ups this week but here are the games I'm looking forward to.

Thursday, Sept. 4
  (24) South Carolina vs. Vanderbilt, 8:30 p.m. ET
The Gamecocks managed to squeak by NC State at home last week when their quarterback threw four interceptions. I wonder how they are going to do on the road at Vanderbilt.

Saturday, Sept. 6
Miami (OH) vs. Michigan, 12 noon ET
The Wolverines' offense looked pitiful in their opening loss to Utah, and neither Steven Threet or Nick Sheridan proved themselves as quarterback. Can their defense lead the way in getting ready for their trip to South Bend the week after?

Oregon State vs. (19) Penn State, 3:30 p.m. ET
Are the Nittany ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Penn State Nittany Lions, Michigan Wolverines, Oregon State Beavers, West Virginia Mountaineers

How the Pac-10 and Notre Dame Saved College Football

Let's Fast-Forward to September 21, after the first four weeks of college football. What have we learned about how tough teams have played and who we should count on to march through their conferences? Not much in some cases.
Eliminating early conference games, here are the results:
  Pac-10
Southern Cal-Ohio State and Virginia, UCLA-Tennessee and BYU.,Washington-Oklahoma and BYU,Cal-Michigan St, Arizona-Georgia, Oregon-Purdue, Oregon St-Penn St were definitive interconference games.
  Notre Dame
The Irish have completed games with Michigan and Michigan State out of their three - and Purdue is their next game.
What if the Pac-10 and Irish, who commit to early season confrontations with top teams are eliminated? What other high profile games have defined non-conference play and given us an idea who will be great teams this year?
  ACC (12 teams)
Clemson-Alabama, Miami-Florida, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Michigan State Spartans, Penn State Nittany Lions, Ohio State Buckeyes, Oregon State Beavers

Trojans' road to national title game has some obvious big obstacles (like Ohio State), but the last couple years it's often been little ones (Stanford, Oregon State) that trip them up.
                         >

A reader this week complained in an e-mail about the river flow of nauseating praise being heaped on USC when, in fact, the Trojans really haven't been that that dominant in the Pete Carroll era.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Southern California Trojans, Ohio State Buckeyes, Oregon State Beavers, Pete Carroll

Penn State Lions Try for Tate Forcier

San Diego stand out high school QB has made his plans final on his visit to Happy Valley. Forcier was said to be changing his official visit to September 6th for the Oregon State game, however that has not worked out and Forcier will be coming to Penn State on September 27th for the night game against Illinois. I think this is great for Penn State and their chances to land this kid. There should be a full stadium "White Out" for the game, and the crowd should be in full effect given the 8pm kick off. (See Notre Dame Game 2007 below)

In addition, Forcier's official visit to Michigan will be this weekend for the game against Utah. Many think Utah can pull off this upset as App. State did last year. Week One should be tough for Michigan to come together as an offense and hopefully Utah can take advantage of this.
Hopefully the former "Big House" will become the "Quiet House" and Forcier can then see what a real crowd is like when he comes to the new "Biggest House" in Happy Valley.

Stanford Grinds It Out in a Win Over Oregon State in Pac-10 Opener

It pains me to have to say it but, you were right. The new front seven and young running backs that were questioned going into this season did not perform as OSU fans had hoped.
A hot night in Palo Alto proved difficult to say the least for the Oregon State Beavers. A team historically centered around a tough fast defense gave up 210 yards rushing to a Stanford team that struggled all last year to run the ball.
While I still do not buy into Stanford being a legit threat in the Pac-10, they challenged the Beavers to be better, and OSU simply wasn't.
The inexperience of the linebacking crew, which so many Beaver supporters thought would pick up where the previous three left off, seemed tired and unable to finish tackles.
It doesn't do much good to be in the right place, but not make the play.
Toby Gerhart looked like an All-American with his reconstructed knee, bouncing off OSU tacklers and gaining 147 yards on 19 carries. Simple zone reads and good blocking from a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oregon State Beavers, Mike Riley

Oregon State Beavers Football in Deep Trouble, Stanford Surprisingly Good

There are several ways to lose a football game.
Turnovers are a killer. Injuries to key players or where depth is thin can be a game-changer. Mismatches are a big reason, too (great passing offense vs. weak secondary, for instance); while they can sometimes be neutralized, there are usually enough big plays generated from the mismatches to dictate the game's end result.
But Oregon State's 36-28 loss to Stanford Thursday (while partially attributable to turnovers) really seemed more about the lack of being able to find poise and make adjustments when things were falling apart.
On consecutive possessions, the Beavers gave up a safety, an interception return for a TD, and then a turnover on downs due to a 4th-and-20 after a recovered fumble for lost yardage. There was no answer each time things went sour, but there was plenty of panic.
Stanford, on the other hand, seemed like a confident team that was not playing its first game. Jim Harbaugh has really improved the team. The Cardinal's defense ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oregon State Beavers

Oregon State Disappoints in Palo Alto: What We've Learned

I was hoping, as I'm sure most Beaver fans were, that this new season would allow Oregon State to break the habit of getting off to a slow start.
With the Beavers' opening day game against the historically bottom-dwelling Stanford Cardinal, I thought for sure that that habit would be broken.
Lets just say old habits die hard.
The Beavers entered the game without hard-hitting Al Afalava and outstanding guard Jeremy Perry.
On a night that featured some very shoddy play by both teams, Oregon State went on to lose, 36-28, due to various miscues by the Beaver offense.
Though many would look at a loss to Stanford as a complete failure, there were many questions answered by the Beavers that should bring relief to Beaver faithful.
One of the biggest questions going into this season was how they would cope with losing all their starters in the front seven.
Simply looking at the box score, one would see that the Cardinal were able to post over 200 yards rushing. This is slightly misleading ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oregon State Beavers

Stanford Vs Oregon State Preview

Stanford will face Oregon State tonight in what should be a very competitive game in the Bay Area. Both teams have huge question marks going into the season. OSU lost their front seven to graduation so there will be new starters all around on the defensive side. They will definitely miss former players such as linebackers Derrick Doggett and Joey LaRoque. No one knows what to expect from their new starters on defense. Stanford returns many of its starters on both sides of the ball. The strength of Stanford's team is in the trenches as they have a solid O-Line and a potentially dominating D-line. Both of these teams won't have their starting free safety for the game as OSU's Al Alfalava is serving a one game suspension, and Stanford's Austin Yancy is injured. This is a huge loss for both teams. It will be very hot on the field tonight and this could play a factor in the second half of the game. RB Ryan McCants is a bruising runner who could run for some nice gains if the Stanford ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oregon State Beavers

Joe Paterno names Daryll Clark as Penn State Starter for Week 1

Not a huge surprise here, but Clark will start this Saturday against Coastal Carolina . Paterno does claim that Pat Devlin will get some time as well, but the coach stressed that he does not want Clark to look over his shoulder.
It is in Penn State's interest to make sure Devlin does see time this year in order to make sure there is a Quarterback for the future. He was a top recruit and because Clark has two more years of eligibility, there are rumors that Devlin would transfer if he does not get to play. I would not fault him for that as all these kids ultimate goal is to make the NFL.
Behind Devlin, Penn State does not have any top QB recruits so it is very important to develop him now, and to recruit a top QB this year.
With Kevin Newsome decommiting from Michigan, and Tate Forcier planning his official visit to Penn State for week two's matchup against Oregon State, Penn State coaches need to make sure one of these kids chooses the Nittany Lions.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Penn State Nittany Lions, Joe Paterno, Michigan Wolverines, Oregon State Beavers

Oregon State Beavers Should Open Pac-10 Season with Win at Stanford

Coach Mike Riley and the men from Corvallis open their season on the road against Stanford. Yes, that means this first game for both teams begins their conference play right off the bat, too.
For Coach Jim Harbaugh, the building of a solid football program continues this season. His Cardinal surprised a lot of folks last year by winning four games, including the huge upset of USC down in Los Angeles.
Stanford has 20 players returning this season with starting experience. Where that will show the most benefit is on the defensive side of the ball.
Bo McNally is an exciting player to watch in the secondary. He knows his football. Up front, defensive end Pannel Egboh is a load. Egboh came up with 13.5 sacks last season, which is amazing when you consider that opponents usually had the luxury of playing conservative offense because they had the lead.
On offense, everyone will be quick to point out that starter Tavita Pritchard engineering the stunning upset of USC last year. But that was it. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Oregon State Beavers
