Conference Call: Pitt deserves respect in Big East

Each week, Sporting News' Matt Hayes ranks the Division I-A conferences—and the teams within each league.
6. Big East
1. Cincinnati
2. Pitt
3. West Virginia
4. South Florida
5. Rutgers
6. Connecticut
7. Louisville
8. Syracuse
Rising
Pitt: The team that, unfairly, gets zero poll love. Why? Two things: previous history (it hasn't been all that good) and the Big East (ditto).
Falling
Rutgers: Syracuse? Syracuse?! Those big strides RU made the last two months—on the field and with the New York City media finally paying attention—were gutted by the loss to the Orange.

Big 10, Big 12 and Big East Capsules Week 12

Big 10
Conference Leader: Ohio State (10-2, 7-1) have clinched the Big 10 regular season title and will head to the Rose Bowl.
Game of Last Week: Northwestern 33, Wisconsin 31. An upset of the Badgers likely allows the Wildcats a chance at a New Year's Day or Eve bowl.
Game of Next Week: The Big 10 regular season is completed.
Bowl Eligible Teams: Iowa Hawkeyes, Penn State Nittany Lions, Ohio State Buckeyes. Wisconsin Badgers, Northwestern Wildcats, Michigan State Spartans, Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Big 12
Conference Leaders: Nebraska (North Division; 8-3, 5-2) and Texas (South Division; 11-0, 7-0) have both clinched their respective division titles and will meet for the Big 12 Championship Game on Dec. 5.
Game of Last Week: Nebraska 17, Kansas State 3. Jockeying for the Big 12 North title all season, these two teams met to finally decide the victor.
In convincing fashion, the stingy Cornhusker defense kept the Wildcats at bay and clinched a trip to the Big 12 Title ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Pittsburgh Panthers, Ohio State Buckeyes, Wisconsin Badgers, Oklahoma State Cowboys

ND-UCONN Has Me Torn Apart

Firstly, let me just say that I will be happy if either team wins (BLASPHEMY!), given what happened to UCONN this year.
With the dawn of the UCONN game roughly 24 hours away, I can say that I am nervous about this one. UCONN fields a very competitive team that has had some tough losses on the field this year. I also feel that they will be much more motivated than our team.
I can only hope and pray, as an ND fan, that they won't pull another "Navy Look-Ahead" (as to the PITT game), and then end up blowing it tomorrow. Given that a very tough Stanford team is coming up, I think that this is quite a possibility. If they already have their sights set on Stanford, then they're in for trouble when the second sniper they missed sights them. Said sniper being UCONN.
Add to all of this the fact that this UCONN team gets a chance to travel to one of the most famous campuses in college football, and play in one of the best stadiums ever constructed. Me thinks they may be ready to play!
Well, we'll see ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Connecticut Huskies, Stanford Cardinal, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Pittsburgh Panthers

For Ben Howland's UCLA and other Pac-10 schools, a down season is ahead.
Sporting News' Mike DeCourcy analyzes what Tuesday's buzz means to college basketball.

Back of the Pac
It's awfully early to be leaping to grand conclusions, but since we'd already leaped to this one in preseason, we're really just affirming our stance: The Pac-10 is going to have a hard time.

Is that based on Oregon State's dismal opening loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Stanford's double-digit loss to San Diego and UCLA's double-overtime stumble against Cal State-Fullerton? Yes. But not entirely.

It's mostly based on the number of very good players who completed their careers last season, either by running out of eligibility (Taylor Rochestie, Jon Brockman) or running for the NBA (Chase Budinger, James Harden). Seven of the league's top 20 scorers from 2008-09 are back, and three of the top 10 rebounders.

And though there are always good high school ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Pittsburgh Panthers, Clemson Tigers

Hayes' Hot Seat: Millions don't alleviate coaches' stress

Sporting News' Matt Hayes analyzes those feeling the heat heading into Week 12.
1. A coach's life
So I've got this guy who emails me every so often, more frequently in previous years but less so this fall.
It seems as though the target of his vitriol—Dave Wannstedt—is out of range. For now, anyway.
After Pitt blew a 14-point lead against N.C. State in September and lost for the only time this season, his email was succinct and to the point: Wannstedt will ruin Pitt like he ruined the Bears and Dolphins.
It's a brutal business, people. Coaches are paid millions, but that cash can't salve the mental anguish coaching families go through while their husband or father is judged by anyone and everyone.
Every. Single. Day.
"It's where we are in this business," Texas coach Mack Brown told me earlier this season. "Winning, unfortunately, is all that matters."
Before we go further, spare me the argument that you'd take the millions to take the abuse, too.
Weis doubts decision on 2010 has been made

Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis says he doesn't believe a decision has been made yet on whether he will be back with the Fighting Irish in 2010.

Weis said at his weekly news conference Tuesday that he thinks he'd know if a decision has been made. Athletic director Jack Swarbrick has said he will evaluate the program after the season.

The Irish (6-4) have lost two straight games, to Navy and Pittsburgh.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Charlie Weis, Pittsburgh Panthers

Is Firing Charlie Weis the Answer for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish?

So...here we go again. After a tough loss to a top ranked Pittsburgh team, Charlie Weis is on the proverbial hot-seat and Notre Dame fans are left to wonder, whats next?
I understand everyone's disgust with what has happened to a Notre Dame team that was picked by many to be playing in a BCS game. Heck, Lou Holtz even declared them a "Dark Horse" for the national championship!
However, I find myself questioning whether Charlie Weis should be fired.
A humiliating loss to Navy, losses to Michigan and USC and now a tough loss to Pitt are hard to get over and I truly feel that changes have got to made. But as a life long Notre Dame fan I'm not sure I am prepared to go through another "re-building" year or two.
I will say that the lack of motivation and discipline shown by the Irish has been hard to endure and I feel that it is the responsibility of the coaching staff to make the necessary adjustments. I think if Weis is going to keep his job the first person to be handed his walking ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Charlie Weis, Pittsburgh Panthers

Conference Call: South Florida's annual second half swoon

Each week, Sporting News' Matt Hayes ranks the Division I-A conferences—and the teams within each league.
6. BIG EAST
1. Cincinnati
2. Pitt
3. West Virginia
4. Rutgers
5. South Florida
6. Connecticut
7. Louisville
8. Syracuse
Rising
Rutgers: While everyone is enamored with Matt Barkley and Tate Forcier, Tom Savage has developed into the best freshman quarterback, and RU has won seven of eight since season opening loss to Cincinnati.
Falling
South Florida: One is an anomaly, two is a trend, three is trouble. Third straight year USF has tanked in the second half of the season.

The Morning After Irish Insight: Notre Dame vs. Pittsburgh

There's not much to say this week other than words consisting of disappointment, anger, and even sadness after yet another late comeback attempt on the road, only to crush the hearts of Notre Dame nation.
I've decided to take a different approach to my traditional Sunday recap piece today. In adjustment to the feelings I am dealing with, I am listing only one positive.

  Superman
No complaints here. Golden Tate is the most exciting player in college football.
While the rest of the team looked as if they hadn't even unpacked their traveling bags, Tate took his normal approach and burned the Pitt defense numerous times. Not to mention he returned a punt 87 yards in the final quarter of the game to even give the Irish a chance.
I know Jimmy Clausen is a special player. However, if Tate wasn't on this team, they would be under .500 at this point in the season.

Jimmy Clausen: We had to dig ourselves out of a hole

Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen threw for 283 yards and a touchdown in the Irish's 27-22 loss to Pitt . Clausen met with Sporting News' Matt Hayes and other reporters after the game.

Q: Any specific reason you guys struggled early on offense?
Jimmy Clausen: We were down a little bit in the first half. For whatever reason, we weren't moving the ball. Whether it was a penalty, a poorly thrown ball, a misread; a lot of little things. We just couldn't consistently move down the field without mistakes and put it in the end zone.

Q: Do you feel like the season has slipped away?
JC: I don't think anything has slipped away from us. Together as a whole, we've put ourselves in position where we've had to dig ourselves out of a hole.

Q: Earlier the talk was about a BCS bowl, now this team will be lucky to play on New Year's Day. How hard is that to accept?
JC: Everything that I know, none of us were talking about the BCS in the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Jimmy Clausen, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Pittsburgh Panthers, Bowl Championship Series

Big East: Pittsburgh holds off Notre Dame

No. 8 Panthers build a big lead and ultimately prevail, 27-22
                         >

at No. 8 Pittsburgh 27, Notre Dame 22: Jonathan Baldwin made two exceptional catches that allowed the Panthers to open up an 18-point lead in the fourth quarter before the Fighting Irish rallied behind two touchdowns by star Golden Tate but still fell short. The loss by Notre Dame figures to raise more cries for Coach Charlie Weis' ouster. Notre Dame (6-4) trailed 27-9 with 12:44 left after Dion Lewis' 50-yard touchdown run, then came back before Jimmy Clausen fumbled with just over two minutes left. Pitt improved to 9-1 for the first time since 1982.

Rider wins statement game vs. Miss. State

What a great job by Tommy Dempsey and his Rider team, smoking 10th-ranked Mississippi State, 88-74, in Starkville. Broncs were dominant, getting 21 points from Mike Ringgold and Novar Gadson and making 63 percent of their three-point shots. Like most teams, Rider had no answers for Miss. State's 6-9 Jarvis Varnado, who finished with 22 points, 14 rebounds and 7 blocked shots, but they held the SEC Bulldogs to just 10 field goals in the second half.

Is this the year the MAAC - with Siena, Niagara and Rider - merits two teams in the tournament. This mid-major league should be so much fun to watch.

I have to give Hofstra coach Tom Pecora credit for trying to drum up some interest in his program by agreeing to play top-ranked Kansas in Allen. The Jayhawks, who got a freshman record 27 points from Xavier Henry, smoked Pride, 101-65, but junior guard Charles Jenkins showed he can play with the big boys, scoring 23 points. Jenkins seems destined to become Hofstra's all-time leading scorer.

Sporting News college basketball expert Mike DeCourcy makes his predictions on how everything will unfold in the six major conferences. Today we preview the Big East and Pac-10. On Friday, we'll look at the SEC and Big 12.
Bold predictions
  1. Villanova will miss Dante Cunningham's strength and experience inside, but the Wildcats' excellent perimeter game will keep them in the title chase.

2. Pitt will figure out a way to remain relevant despite a roster full of role players, redshirts and freshmen.

3. West Virginia will win the Big East. The Mountaineers have backcourt depth, fantastic forwards and an overwhelming homecourt advantage. They'll have to score more frequently than last season—but that shouldn't be hard.
The Best of the Big East
  Freshman: Mouphtaou Yarou, Villanova

Rebounder: Luke Harangody, Notre Dame

Passer: Eugene Harvey, Seton Hall

NBA prospect: Devin Ebanks, West Virginia

Defender: Jerome Dyson, Connecticut

Shooter: Andy Rautins, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, West Virginia Mountaineers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Pittsburgh Panthers, South Florida Bulls, Cincinnati Bearcats, Syracuse Orange

Early signings continue to trickle in

St. John's only has one scholarship to give but one of their key recruits - 6-6 J.J. Moore of South Kent - has spurned them to sign with Pitt. Moore was also recruited by Louisville. Happy to hear 6-8 Devon Collier of St. Anthony's - who I've been watching since he was a ninth grader on New Heights - has signed to play for Craig Robinson of Oregon State. Wing guard Jason Morris of the Hotchkiss, Ct. School, who we loved when we watched him play for the Gauchos last summer, has made it official for Georgia Tech.

No. 8 Pitt faces Irish with WVU looming (AP)

The game against an unranked opponent falls right before No. 8 Pitt's rivalry game against West Virginia followed by perhaps the biggest of this season's Big East games -- a showdown with No. 5 Cincinnati. Winning probably won't substantially boost the Panthers' ranking. Losing might derail all the momentum they've spent a half-season building.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Pittsburgh Panthers, West Virginia Mountaineers
