Tennessee Vols Basketball: Purdue Will Be Biggest Test So Far

We all love the preseason publications. I read two of them from cover-to-cover on a yearly basis—usually in more than one sport.
When I read this season's Athlon basketball publication I was surprised to see how far they had Purdue going in March.
As a matter of fact, in their mock tournament they had Purdue defeating Tennessee in the Elite Eight, advancing the Boilermakers to the Final Four at the Vols' expense.
If that prediction is to hold true, it wont be the first time these two have met in 2009.
On Monday night, Tennessee will face Purdue in the Finals of the Paradise Jam tournament in the Virgin Islands. Consider this the biggest test of the young season.
No. 7 Purdue features dynamic playmakers like JaJuan Johnson and great defenders like Chris Kramer. Guard E'Twuan Moore can light you up from anywhere on the floor, but the straw the stirs the drink is small forward Robbie Hummell. So good is Hummell he is considered one of the top three small forwards in the country.

Creature Vs. Creature: Indiana Faces Purdue in the Bucket Game

After an extremely up and down season for both teams, Purdue and Indiana finish their seasons this Saturday at 3:30 PM in Bloomington, Indiana.
Indiana began the season winning their first three games, but they have lost seven of their last eight games and have nothing left to play for but pride and the Old Oaken Bucket, although that is big enough of a thing to play for.
Purdue won their first game against Toledo before losing five in a row. However, they had a massive upset over Ohio State to break that losing streak and are 2-2 since that game. They are now out of bowl contention, though, after losing a close one last week to Michigan State.
The Hoosiers last year were demolished in the Bucket game, losing 62-10 to Purdue in West Lafayette, but this season they are a much better team.
The offense has been improved greatly, with junior QB Ben Chappell taking the reins and putting up a great year statistically, throwing for 2,675 yards, a 63 percent completion rate, 15 touchdowns, and a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Indiana Hoosiers, Purdue Boilermakers

Crystal Ballin': Purdue, Tennessee Headline Paradise Jam

This Friday, eight solid college basketball programs send their teams to the U.S. Virgin Islands for the 10th annual Paradise Jam tournament.

As the Purdue Boilermakers are part of this year's event, it's only fitting that a Boilermaker columnist cover the Jam and offer some predictions on the outcome.

Two Top 10 programs, Purdue and Tennessee, headline the tournament, with two other teams who reached last season's NCAA Tournament, Northern Iowa and Boston College.

UNI and Purdue, in particular, have a little familiarity with each other, with Purdue ending UNI's NCAA ride in last year's first round. Unfortunately, the rematch would not occur here unless the two meet in the championship or fourth-place games.

But, we're getting ahead of ourselves. Up next is a game-by-game analysis and prediction of this year's Paradise Jam.
Kansas Jayhawks Top the Rankings, Purdue Boilermakers Gaining Ground

Kansas entered the season as the top team in the country, and one week into the season, the Jayhawks didn't disappoint. Bill Self's team dominated its opening game against a tough Hofstra team.
Kansas could have company atop the rankings as several extremely talented teams trail the Jayhawks. Michigan State, Texas, and Purdue all rolled in their openers as all three teams did what elite teams do: don't even give inferior opponents hope.
The Boilermakers jump up a few spot in the rankings after the opening because of the play of several highly touted teams. Kentucky looked pretty good against Morehead State without stud freshman John Wall, but with Wall in the lineup, Miami (OH) put on a three-point shooting clinic against a porous Wildcats' defense.
North Carolina did not look outstanding against Florida International or Valparaiso in uninspiring wins against those two squads. It's still very early in the season, but Carolina does not look like an elite team...yet. Roy Williams has a roster ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Kansas Jayhawks, Purdue Boilermakers

KU ups lead in AP hoops poll; Purdue now No. 6

An opening week in which only one ranked team lost meant few changes in the first poll of the regular season.

Kansas beat Hofstra 101-65 in its only game and was the runaway No. 1 in The Associated Press' college basketball poll, just as it was in the preseason Top 25. The Jayhawks received 58 first-place votes from the national media panel, three more than in the preseason poll.

Michigan State beat Florida Gulf Coast 97-58 in its opener and was again No. 1 on five ballots to hold second.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Kansas Jayhawks, Michigan State Spartans, Purdue Boilermakers

Kirk Cousins threw three touchdown passes, and Michigan State overcame an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat Purdue 40-37 and become bowl eligible on Saturday. B.J. Cunningham caught three passes for 92 yards and a score for the Spartans (6-5, 4-3 Big Ten). Purdue quarterback Joey Elliott completed 39 of 55 passes for 373 yards and two touchdowns.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan State Spartans, Purdue Boilermakers

Big Ten Week 11 Preview and Predicitions

Isn't it strange how the Big Ten conference implodes around Ohio State each year?
Purdue beats OSU early in the year and opens the door to Penn State and Iowa. Penn State gets beat by Ohio State last week, and this week Iowa travels to Columbus to get similar treatment without its starting QB. Fun stuff!
At least Ohio State will get to see what a Rose Bowl is like.

 The Big Ten Championship Game
 Iowa at Ohio State
This game was much more interesting before Ricky Stanzi went down last week. Now it might as well be Ohio State playing Northwestern. The only way Iowa has a chance in this game is for their defense to create turnovers and points like they did when they traveled to Penn State. The line is huge in this one, and I think Vegas has it right—Iowa is getting 17 points.
 Iowa 10 OSU 31

 Indiana at Penn State
Penn State lost a chance at the Rose Bowl last week with their home loss to the Buckeyes. Indiana, which has played well in spurts this year, is going ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Penn State Nittany Lions, Ohio State Buckeyes, Purdue Boilermakers, Northwestern Wildcats, Iowa Hawkeyes

Rose Bowl on line as Buckeyes host Iowa (AP)

Ohio State tight end Jake Ballard was stunned when he was told that with a win against Iowa on Saturday, the Buckeyes are headed to the Rose Bowl. Really? Yep. Less than a month after losing to a Purdue team that had won just one of its first six games, the No. 10 Buckeyes find themselves needing only a win over the 15th-ranked Hawkeyes to start booking flights for Pasadena, Calif.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Ohio State Buckeyes, Iowa Hawkeyes, Purdue Boilermakers

One More Victory and Sparty Goes Bowling

As the college football season (sadly) concludes in less than two weeks, many programs are doing their best to differentiate themselves from everybody else.

Some are leaving starters in longer to accumulate bigger scoring margins, while some are trying to gain some style points-just to get to play in the biggest bowl games in the land.

Some teams, like the Michigan State Spartans (5-5), are just trying to get to a bowl game in general.

That is what this season has come down to for the team with a .500 record. With two games remaining, the Spartans have to win at least one to become bowl eligible.

Pretty simple, right? Well, yeah. The task is right there in front of them, but it is definitely easier said than done.

Michigan State travels to Purdue this Saturday to get their first chance at accomplishing their goal. Purdue just defeated Michigan in Ann Arbor for the first time in over 40 years, and the Boilermakers also beat Ohio State earlier in the season.

The team ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Michigan State Spartans, Purdue Boilermakers, Mark Dantonio, Penn State Nittany Lions, Ohio State Buckeyes
