Georgia Tech vs Clemson: A Preview of the ACC Championship Game.

It's ACC Championship game week! It's Georgia Tech vs Clemson for the right to go the Orange Bowl. Both teams are coming off bitterly disappointing losses to their in state arch rivals. Georgia Tech lost 30-24 to the Georgia Bulldogs and the Clemson Tigers lost to the South Carolina Gamecocks 34-17. Despite the losses the two teams have had an exciting rivalry the last decade and this should be a close competitive game.
I don't think last Saturday's results will play much role in the upcoming game. Clemson hasn't shown the ability to power run this season the way Georgia did against Georgia Tech. Clemson will typically line the quarterback up in the shotgun, and run from that formation. For Clemson a stiff South Carolina defense stuffed them. Georgia Tech's defense has been inconsistent at best, and got sliced apart by the Bulldogs run game. Neither team is likely to take advantage of the other the way the Bulldogs and and Gamecocks did. So what do I see as the keys to the game?
  How does ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Clemson Tigers, Paul Johnson, South Carolina Gamecocks, Georgia Bulldogs

Clemson Tigers Forget To Show Up Against South Carolina Gamecocks

The rivalry has been alive since the 1880s and Clemson has dominated the nine of the past 10 meetings at Williams Brice Stadium. Unfortunately, it looks like the Tigers forgot their purpose on Saturday.
This is the 107th time the two teams have faced each other and Clemson fans were definitely disappointed after the match.
Clemson suffered a few bad turnovers and could not overcome them. It seemed as the game went on, more stuff kept going wrong and the team could not get their act together.
Many of the South Carolina fans say it serves us right after all of the bragging we have done since the last time they won in 2006. This win was also big for Steve Spurrier, who has not done anything for the Gamecocks all season before the game.
Clemson's Heisman contender, C.J. Spiller, did not have his best game either, which may seriously affect his chances at the trophy.
This was an unfortunate end to the regular season. Winning the rivalry game would have lifted the spirits of the team and ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Clemson Tigers, South Carolina Gamecocks, Steve Spurrier, C.J.
SEC Bowl Projections As Blurry Now As Before Season

It was not exactly what you would call expected, but it was possible.
With Auburn's loss to Alabama on Friday, the Tigers were 7-5, but were still looking at a pretty good bowl game because at least two SEC foes should finish 6-6 after South Carolina loses to Clemson and Georgia fell to Georgia Tech.
But the SEC proved to be the superior conference over the ACC on Saturday when both South Carolina and Georgia upended the two teams that will play for the ACC title.
And that put a few flies in the ointment when looking at the bowl picture.
Here is a list of teams that are 7-5: Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee.
Where does that put these five football teams come the bowl season? Let's look at the overall picture and see if placing them is possible.
History is the best way to place teams into bowl games.
The BCS Championship game semifinals will be played Saturday with Alabama and Florida vying for a trip to Pasadena and the other settling for a Sugar Bowl trip.
After that, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, South Carolina Gamecocks, Auburn Tigers

South Carolina's Holloman: 'Can't wait for next year, when it's in Clemson'

COLUMBIA, S.C.—South Carolina freshman safety DeVonte Holloman's 54-yard interception return in the first quarter set up a short touchdown pass from Stephen Garcia that put the Gamecocks in front of Clemson for good Saturday afternoon. That was one of three turnovers the South Carolina defense produced in a 34-17 upset of the No. 15 Tigers. Holloman spoke with reporters, including Sporting News Today's Ryan Fagan, after the game.

Q: What did you see on that interception?
A: Just the receivers' route combinations and the quarterback's eyes, and it ended up good. Just watching the quarterback, really.
Q: Did you think you were going to take it in for a touchdown?
A: I did. (Jacoby) Ford snuck up on me. I looked back one time and he wasn't there, and I looked back again and he was right there. Yeah, he got me.
Q: It's been several games between turnovers. How frustrating has that been for you guys?
A: It's always frustrating. We do a lot of ball drills, then turn around in the game ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, South Carolina Gamecocks, Clemson Tigers, Devonte Holloman

Second No. 5 under center sparks Gamecocks' upset

COLUMBIA, S.C.—The position was the same, and the number on the jersey was the identical, but the threat was completely different. And that new wrinkle in the offense was exactly the spark South Carolina needed to pull off a 34-17 upset of No. 15 Clemson.
Starting quarterback Stephen Garcia, the rifle-armed slinger who wears No. 5, had thrown an interception to end South Carolina's first drive—after nearly throwing one a few plays earlier. With his team trailing 7-0—Clemson star C.J. Spiller had returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown—Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier went for a fresh look when his club got the ball back thanks to a momentum-shifting fumble recovery by star linebacker Eric Norwood.
Spurrier turned to true freshman Stephon Gilmore, who has donned No. 5 as a starter at cornerback the entire season. Gilmore, South Carolina's Mr. Football after his senior season as a dual-threat quarterback at South Pointe High in Rock Hill, hadn't taken a snap ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, South Carolina Gamecocks, Clemson Tigers

Clemson-South Carolina Football: No. 15 Tigers Manhandled in Columbia

Clemson is still going to the ACC championship. That's the good news. The bad news is the Tigers got beat in every way by a very mediocre South Carolina team.
After C.J. Spiller returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, the Gamecocks scored 24 straight points in a 34-17 victory. The most frustrating part of the game was hearing the E SEC PN announcers fall all over each other discussing the SEC's perceived speed advantage over the ACC.
Frankly, that had absolutely nothing to do with the result. This had everything to do with one team being heaped with praise for several weeks and the other having enough of it. Credit Steve Spurrier and South Carolina for playing harder and more physical than Clemson. The Tigers just couldn't match Carolina's level of intensity.
What does this mean for Clemson's ACC title hopes? I still have to see how Georgia Tech plays against Georgia. If the Jackets lose today, the result for Clemson may be a wash. The ACC's best teams losing to middling SEC teams. That's ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Clemson Tigers, South Carolina Gamecocks, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Clemson-South Carolina Preview: Gamecocks Hope To Reverse Rivalry Trend

The Gamecocks and Tigers will tee it up for the 107th time on Saturday in the Battle For The Palmetto State. There is no love lost between these two as was evidenced when I asked bloggers from both teams what this rivalry means. Clemson would like a sixth win in a row this season and a seventh win in the last eight meetings between the two. But they also have an ACC Championship Game to look forward to next week. South Carolina on the other hand is hoping to break a three game losing streak this season and beat a potential conference champion and their arch rival.
Keys For Clemson: 1. Spiller Time CJ Spiller is the most dynamic player in college football having scored running the ball, receiving the ball, returning the ball, and throwing the ball this season. The Tigers have done a very good job at making sure he gets plenty of touches this season. That needs to continue on Saturday. South Carolina must know where the Heisman candidate is at all times, especially ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, South Carolina Gamecocks, Clemson Tigers

Clemson Studends Hold Funeral for Cocky

Last night Clemson University fans held a funeral service for the South Carolina Gamecocks mascot, Cocky. The service was part of a huge pep rally to get the team ready for the rivalry game on Saturday.
There were Clemson fans from all over the community who came out to enjoy the festivities.
A coffin containing the mascot sat at the front of the festivities surrounded by members of the Tiger Platoon and the Clemson mascots. The cheerleaders and rally cats performed for the celebration.
The funeral service is becoming a Clemson tradition. We end the regular season with a game against South Carolina every year and this is just something extra for the students and community to take part in.
This is just a part of the events that lead up to the rivalry game. There has also been a "Blood Bowl" in which the schools compete to see which school can donate the most blood this holiday season. Read more College Football news on BleacherReport.com

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Clemson Tigers, South Carolina Gamecocks

2009 South Carolina Gamecocks: A "Wait 'Til Next Year" Team

Will the 2010 college football season be the one Gamecock fans have always waited for? Throughout the 2009 season I have heard, and said, "they're mostly a bunch of young kids playing this year."
The "kids" now have some experience under their belts and know what it takes to win and how it feels to lose. These "kids" are also the highly-ranked classes of 2008 and 2009.
This season has been filled with many highs, great plays, and great games.
We also saw the mistakes and inexperience that comes with such a young team.
Nevertheless, the season was a successful one as we go into the weekend facing our intrastate rival, Clemson. Six or seven wins this year should be considered just that, successful.
The 2009 team should not be ashamed of how the season went because they could just as well be sitting on an 8-4 or 9-3 season were it not for a little more luck or fewer mistakes.
When the season ends for 2009, I feel we can say with confidence, "Wait 'til next year".
Syracuse Orange Land Max Beaulieu, Three-Star Florida DE

When Syracuse upset then-No. 25 Rutgers this weekend, many thought that it would have major recruiting ramifications for both programs.
It has quickly turned out to pay dividends for the Orange, as they have landed three-star defensive end recruit Max Beaulieu from University School of Nova Sout in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
The 6'3", 240 lb defensive lineman committed after visiting the school with teammate and fellow Orange commit, Brice Hawkes. Beaulieu said that he is excited for "a chance to play in a great conference for a coaching staff that is committed to getting back to the top in the conference."
In an interview with the Miami Herald, Charles Fishbein of Elite Scouting Services (who ranked Beaulieu in their Top 100) said that "this is not just one of those ordinary talents who schools from the Northeast come in and get."
Beaulieu also holds offers from schools including Purdue, Wake Forest, Arkansas, South Carolina, Nebraska, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.
The SEC Is Looking Weak Again In Men's Hoops

It's basketball season again. Contrary to popular belief, many SEC fans love basketball season. I am one of them. I was a bit miffed last season when the SEC only got three NCAA bids. I felt Auburn should have gotten one too. I especially felt that way when I saw teams like Maryland and Arizona get in with their puny resumes.
But, then the three SEC teams, Mississippi State, Tennessee, and LSU were out quicker than a hiccup. There was no reason to argue then.
But looking at the teams who were almost good enough to get in, Auburn, Florida, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, and South Carolina, and looking what these teams were bringing back, I thought the SEC was in for a good year this year. This was also enhanced by a highly ranked recruiting class among the SEC schools. Kentucky's was out of this world.
I was a bit ticked at the lack of respect the SEC was getting in the preseason. Many "experts" were saying that the league would get anywhere from four to six teams in the NCAA. Five seemed to be the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Florida Gators, Mississippi State Bulldogs, South Carolina Gamecocks

Conference Call: Rebels on the rise in SEC

Each week, Sporting News' Matt Hayes ranks the Division I-A conferences—and the teams within each league.
1. SEC
1. Alabama
2. Florida
3. Mississippi
4. LSU
5. Arkansas
6. Auburn
7. Tennessee
8. Kentucky
9. South Carolina
10. Georgia
11. Mississippi State
12. Vanderbilt
Rising
Ole Miss: Rebels have won five of their last six and again are the league's hot team late in the season. Too bad the first five weeks were so uneven.
Falling
Georgia: Losing to Kentucky in Athens for the first time in forever caps the meltdown of a season. Dawgs staring at first six-loss season since 1996.

SEC Bowl Projections

With one week remaining in an up-and-down season, the SEC bowl picture is still as muddy as ever.

Even after all the games are completed we still won't know anything for sure until the Sunday following the SEC Championship game. That is not commonplace in the SEC.

Usually there are two elite teams, three to four fringe teams, two to three decent teams, and one lucky-to-be-.500 team in the SEC by this time in the season.

This year the elite teams are there (Alabama and Florida). There are two fringe teams (Ole Miss and LSU). The SEC has a whole slew of decent teams (Kentucky, Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia, Arkansas). The one lucky team still holds true (South Carolina).

The liklihood of having four teams finish 7-5 in the SEC is mindboggling to say the least. Throw in the fact that three teams could finish 6-6 as well, and well, you see why the SEC is not quite what she's cracked up to be outside the top teams.

So without further ado I will look into my crystal ball and attempt to predict the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Alabama Crimson Tide, Ole Miss Rebels, South Carolina Gamecocks

Retired NBA star Jayson Williams will not be in a New Jersey courtroom Friday to enter a plea in the 2002 shooting death of a hired driver. State Superior Court Judge Edward M. Coleman indefinitely delayed a hearing in Somerville in which Williams was expected to plead guilty. A person with direct knowledge of the situation, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of a gag order imposed by Coleman, told The Associated Press that the delay was partly because of travel problems Williams experienced getting to New Jersey from his home in South Carolina.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NBA, Jayson Williams, Edward Mujica, South Carolina Gamecocks
