Is Pete Carroll's Charity Work a Hinderance For The USC Trojans?

As Pete Carroll and the USC Trojans attempt to climb out of the quagmire of a disappointing season, the radio talk around the Los Angeles southland has centered on a most unusual topic. Is Pete Carroll's work with his charity foundation "A Better LA," detracting from his ability to guide the Trojans? This was the topic for discussion on ESPN's popular "Steve Mason and John Ireland Show," where a surprising number of call in's said that indeed, the charity work was limiting Carroll's ability to pull the Trojans out of their recent travails. Both Mason and Ireland took exception to this line of thinking, saying that Pete's charity work was never a problem when he was guiding the Trojans to their NCAA record seven straight top four finishes along with those consecutive PAC-10 championships. In addition to using statistics from two sources, I will use my own perception of teams' national image to rank the top 10 wealthiest and most recognizable brands in college football. The two sources I will compile important statistics from include the following: (1) The Equity in Athletics report from the U.S. Department of Education Using the data from this site, I will report how much each of my top 10 generated in football revenues. (2) The Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) On November 11, 2009, the Collegiate Licensing Company released their list of the top selling universities in collegiate gear, apparel, etc. While CLC does not represent schools, such as Ohio State or Southern California, I will utilize it's rankings of the top selling brands. Buell's Eye: Week 12's College Football Picks

Week 12 features not only the greatest rivalry in College Football, but the greatest rivalry, filled with unmatchable history and tradition, in all of sports. Last weekend saw the continuous onward march of the top teams, keeping all six undefeated programs' untainted record intact. USC made history in all of the wrong ways. Iowa ensured that they would not see a BCS Bowl this season after their 9-0 start with their second consecutive loss. Houston, Arizona and South Florida all took huge steps backward, as well. And, the Ohio State Buckeyes punched their ticket for yet another Rose Bowl appearance. My worst week, so far, occurred in Week 11 with a 16-6 record, leading to my 184-46 record overall. Are USC's Struggles Really Due To An Improved Pac-10? I Say NO!

In trying to explain USC's disappointing season, which go way beyond losing a ton of players to the NFL draft and both coordinators to Washington, Carroll is claiming that the reason is that the rest of the Pac-10 has improved. This echoes w hat many western sportswriters have been claiming ... that this Pac-10 is the best and deepest that it has been in years , possibly ever. However, the media and fans should not let Carroll get off the hook so easily. Exhibit A: If USC's struggles are due to an improved Pac-10, how come USC has been less than impressive out of conference? USC went from blowing out Ohio State 32-3 to eking by them 18-15 thanks mostly to the Buckeyes' own incompetence. They also went from thrashing Notre Dame 38-3 to needing a defensive stop to preserve a 34-27 victory, and even their 56-3 against San Jose State was not nearly as impressive as the score indicates.
