Why not just add another round to the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer -- say tonight -- and let Syracuse play the Knicks?

Syracuse Dominates UNC; Wes Johnson and Orange Are the Team to Beat

Syracuse dominated North Carolina from start to finish. North Carolina was stopped cold by the Orangemen's 2-3 zone. The Tar Heels were exploited, they will not beat a team all year that forces them to shoot threes. Will Graves is their best three point theat and he's no more a threat from three than your average intramural all-star.
No matter what the polls say, at this point, the Orangemen have established themselves as the team to beat in all of college basketball.
Kansas hasn't played anyone, Duke looks good with Plumlee in the middle, but they too haven't played a formidable opponent. Syracuse is the team to beat as far as I am concerned.
No one can argue that the Orangemen, from one through five, are the most balanced team in the country. Andy Rautins, Rick Jackson, Wes Johnson, Onuaku, and Triche. Who can beat them right now? No one. The Orangemen's 24th preseason ranking was ridiculously low. The Orangemen will be in the Final Four, guaranteed. Period. The Tar Heels, Sweet Sixteen, no ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Syracuse Orange, North Carolina Tar Heels, Will Graves, Kansas Jayhawks, Andy Rautins

Unhappy at Iowa State, Wesley Johnson transferred to Syracuse and has become a vital player. Never was that more evident than when he led the Orange past UNC, says Seth Davis.

Johnson knew he needed to step up, and did

NEW YORK—Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim says he's known Wesley Johnson was a special talent from the first time he saw him play.

Wesley Johnson introduced himself to the Syracuse faithful with 25 points against UNC.
But it was not until Johnson, a 6-7 transfer from Iowa State, lit up Madison Square Garden the last two nights that the rest of the country got acquainted with his singular talent as well.

Johnson scored 25 points Friday night to lead Syracuse to a stunningly lopsided 87-71 victory over previously unbeaten North Carolina to win the 2K Sports Classic.
That came one night after he had 17 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks in a 95-73 semifinal victory over California. Those efforts earned him the tournament MVP award.
Leading an effort that Boeheim called his team's best ever at Madison Square Garden — especially in a second half that saw the Orange outscore the Tar Heels, 50-32 — Johnson shot 10 of 17 from the field, 4 of 8 from 3-point range, pulled down ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Syracuse Orange, North Carolina Tar Heels, Wesley Johnson

Cal's Jerome Randle: 'We are going to get our guys back and roll'

Don't dismiss California, the preseason pick to win the Pacific-10, as a player on the national stage after consecutive defeats to Syracuse and Ohio State at Madison Square Garden. That's the message senior point Jerome Randle delivered to Sporting News' Bill Eichenberger after scoring a team-high 26 points in Friday's 76-70 loss to the Buckeyes in the consolation round of the 2K Classic.
SN: How frustrating is it to not get a victory playing on this national stage?
JR: "It's not frustrating at all. We were down two very important pieces to the puzzle (leading scorer Theo Robertson and junor forward Harper Kamp, both sidelined with injuries). Because of the injuries, we had guys playing in positions they never thought they would be playing in."
SN:So you remain optimistic about this team's chances heading into Pac-10 play?
JR: "It's still early in the year. I'm not really worried about the outcome of the season. I know we are going to have a great season. We are going to get ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Jerome Randle, California Golden Bears, Ohio State Buckeyes, Syracuse Orange

Sporting News' Mike DeCourcy analyzes what Friday's buzz means to college basketball.
SU—Seriously Underrated
You know that thing in the My Profile section of Sporting News Today, where we ask the athlete or the coach about their motto? Every time I see that, it reminds me I have no motto.
Except when it comes to preseason predictions. That one goes:
It's not about who you lost, it's about who you have.
This is why North Carolina was Sporting News' No. 4 team. The top four scorers left, but the Heels remain loaded with NBA prospects. It's also why Syracuse should have been higher in predictions of the Big East standings.
Even the league coaches whiffed on this one. They had SU sixth, behind Villanova, West Virginia, Connecticut, Louisville and Georgetown.
The 'Cuse lost its top three scorers, but losing Paul Harris and Eric Devendorf was positive. Each was replaced by a better, lower-maintenance player. Wesley Johnson and Andy Rautins make Syracuse better. Had Jonny Flynn stuck, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Syracuse Orange, Tennessee Volunteers, Kentucky Wildcats, John Calipari

With four seniors in the regular starting lineup, No. 13 Cal has been a trendy pick this season to win the Pac-10 title and reach the Final Four. But if Thursday's dismantling at the hands of unranked Syracuse was any indication, the Bears have much work to...

Syracuse-UNC and Puerto Rico Tip-Off Highlight Weekend of College Hoops

Syracuse Strives to Knock off National Champ for Second Consecutive Year
Last season, an up-and-coming Syracuse team went to Kansas City, made an unthinkable comeback, and eventually sent the Kansas Jayhawks, the defending champions, to the showers after SU won in its favorite time of day: overtime.
This season, North Carolina may be the defending champs, but the Tar Heels face a challenge similar to the up-hill battle the 'Cuse fought and won last year. The Orange had to invade Jayhawk territory to come away with the CBE Classic Title.
UNC must defeat Jim Boeheim's bunch in SU's home away from home. That's no easy task considering the 'Cuse is 10-2 in its last handful of early-season tournaments that culminated in New York City.
Roy Williams has one of his toughest tasks ahead of him to have his Heels prepared to put points on the board against Syracuse's stingy zone.
Ohio State attempted to stop Carolina's offense in the second half with a sagging 2-3 zone defense, but the Orange will ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Syracuse Orange, North Carolina Tar Heels

Jardine-Triche duo helping Syracuse forget about Flynn

NEW YORK – They didn't show the flash or other-wordly quickness off the dribble of Jonny Flynn, but Syracuse point guards Scoop Jardine and and Brandon Triche were plenty good enough Thursday night in the Orange's 95-73 victory over California in the semifinals of the 2K Sports Classic.
On the same Madison Square Garden court where Flynn put an incredible iron-man performance last season, playing 67 of 70 minutes and leading the Orange to a six-overtime victory over UConn in a Big East Tournament quarterfinal, Jardine, a third-year sophomore, and Triche, a freshman, split time at the point and combined for 31 ponts, seven assists and only three turnovers.
Jardine was especially effective coming off the bench, scoring a career- and game-high 22 points in 27 minutes.
"We're not looking for them to score this much," Syracuse coach Boeheim said of his point guards. "I think Cal was worried about our big guys,so that they got some opportunities and took advantage of them, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Syracuse Orange

A top prospect in the class of 2010, Tobias Harris finally made his decision tonight, choosing to play his college basketball at the University of Tennessee over the likes of Syracuse, West Virginia, Louisville and Kentucky.
The 6-8, 220-pound forward made his announcement at the ESPN Zone in New York City, surrounded by a crowd of fans hoping he would choose to wear Syracuse's orange rather than Tennessee's. In fact, the Syracuse-slanted crowd booed the decision.
"I liked the family atmosphere, the campus," he said. "It was a place I could imagine going to if I wasn't playing basketball. I can talk to coach [Bruce] Pearl about anything."
He joins shooting guard, and fellow ESPN Top 100 recruit, Jordan McRae as well as shooting guard Trae Golden in Tennessee's 2010 recruiting class.

College basketball teams get early chance to prove they belong among elite

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State proved it has the depth of a champion, and Gonzaga showed it's not in any hurry to decline as the Spartans were forced to rally for a 75-71 victory Tuesday at the Breslin Center.
Here are four more games in the next week that'll tell us more about how legitimate some of the nation's ranked teams are—and who might eventually be joining them.

Gani Lawal and Georgia Tech can start proving they're worthy of being ranked this week.
Georgia Tech vs. Dayton, Thursday 11:30 a.m., Puerto Rico Tip-Off
What we need to know: Georgia Tech won just two ACC games last season but flew into the Top 25 when center Gani Lawal returned and elite recruit Derrick Favors joined him up front. Can the Jackets get that good this fast? Dayton is an athletic team that makes it hard to score. Some young teams don't handle frustration well. The best do.
Syracuse vs. California, Thursday 7 p.m., 2K Sports Classic
What we need to know: Syracuse responded well to ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Michigan State Spartans, Gani Lawal, Syracuse Orange

What We Learned: Marrone has no regrets

Sporting News' Dave Curtis analyzes what Friday's buzz means to college football.
No buyer's remorse
Most Sundays, Doug Marrone finds himself absorbed with trying to make Syracuse a football success again. But when he does emerge from his office (which he says doesn't feature Internet access), he admits to seeking out updates on his former employer.
"I'd be lying if I told you the video people don't have time to give me updates as the day goes on," Marrone said on a teleconference. "If I go to get a cup of coffee, I may say, 'How are the Saints doing?'"
Marrone bailed on New Orleans, where he served as offensive coordinator, in December to take over his alma mater's program. His Orange enter today's game at Louisville 3-6; "his" Saints enter Sunday's game at St. Louis 8-0, with some experts thinking they could sweep through the regular season.
Marrone's old offense (to be fair, head coach Sean Payton calls the plays) is on pace to score better than 600 points ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Syracuse Orange

3-Pointers: Villanova freshman's story rings hollow

Sporting News' Mike DeCourcy analyzes what Thursday's buzz means to college basketball.
  Playing defense
Villanova's public defense of freshman Mouphtaou Yarou has become more complicated than his case.
Sporting News first reported Monday about the existence of a Web site listing a Mouphtaou Monra Yarou as competing in the 2007 Africa Cup for Men's Clubs and averaging 14.8 points for Benin-based Renaissance BBC over five games.
That Yarou has the same birthday as the one currently enrolled at Villanova, but with a birth year of 1984 rather than 1990. If Villanova's Yarou, who is a native of Benin, were in fact age 25, it is possible most or all of his NCAA eligibility would be compromised.
Wildcats coach Jay Wright joined Philadelphia ESPN radio host Mike Missanelli on Wednesday and said, "On this Web site, they knew about this five years ago, his family, and they were trying to get this taken down." ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Basketball, Andy Rautins, Syracuse Orange

Forecasting the Big East: Mountaineers will finish on top

Sporting News college basketball expert Mike DeCourcy makes his predictions on how everything will unfold in the six major conferences. Today we preview the Big East and Pac-10. On Friday, we'll look at the SEC and Big 12.
Bold predictions
  1. Villanova will miss Dante Cunningham's strength and experience inside, but the Wildcats' excellent perimeter game will keep them in the title chase.

2. Pitt will figure out a way to remain relevant despite a roster full of role players, redshirts and freshmen.

3. West Virginia will win the Big East. The Mountaineers have backcourt depth, fantastic forwards and an overwhelming homecourt advantage. They'll have to score more frequently than last season—but that shouldn't be hard.
The Best of the Big East
  Freshman: Mouphtaou Yarou, Villanova

Rebounder: Luke Harangody, Notre Dame

Passer: Eugene Harvey, Seton Hall

NBA prospect: Devin Ebanks, West Virginia

Signing day winners: All eyes on newest Bucks

Most of the big winners in college basketball recruiting were decided long ago, but Wednesday's national signing day made it more official. These were the programs celebrating hardest:

1. Ohio State. The Buckeyes have known for years that five-star center Jared Sullinger and small forward DeShaun Thomas would be joining them, and there are four other solid prospects.

2. Memphis. Rookie coach Josh Pastner has landed five strong prospects, including five-star shooting guard Will Barton, point guard Joe Jackson and a new commitment: center Hippolyte Tsafack.

3. Illinois. Small forward Jereme Richmond signed Wednesday—three years and three weeks after committing.

4. Syracuse. The biggest Orange prize: 7-footer Fabricio Melo, who has a face-the-basket game and low-post body.

5. North Carolina. Carolina gets two more McDonald's All-Americans, point guard Kendall Marshall and shooting guard Reggie Bullock. As if the Heels needed them.
